i went to my local BB and they had the g51
i asked about the g71 but they didnt know anything about it

Those temps, on AC power look ok. I get higher temps than that, and I have never had problems. My temps reach up to 95C at most, and 3dmark06 is one of the few apps that gets that high temp, games usually get barely near 90C.
The CPU temps are a bit higher than I expected, but still normalish. On battery mode, it does get quite hot.... have you checked with GPU-z or perhaps rivatuner to check your GPU during battery mode? It shouldn't get over 70C when running iddle with no CPU in a semi closed area.
You can't compare direct temps with other laptops as they have different cooling solutions and designs. The new 260M GTX might be a die shrink, but that does not guarantee immediate super low temps specially since you are now using a higher end GPU on the same chasis. it does have decreased temps but bear in mind that it is still a G92 chip with more shaders. Your temps are inline with what the G50 can handle. However, as someone else said, you won't be overclocking much at all.
I think I won't change laptops right now. If the 260M is compatible with the G50 chasis as is, I might give it a try, otherwise I am aming for W90.At worst, I might get the MSI. -

I'm sure Clutch would know, heh. -
i hope that the g71 doesnt get that hot
-
Man, I was just about to buy the X6 from Newegg, I'm glad I did some research.
If the G51 had a 2.53 GHz over the 2, I'd probably pick it up right away!
Looks like I'll probably end up going for the G71, the $1149.99 one.
Though for the specs, the price seems too good to be true. I bet the hard drive has slower speeds and the res'll be knocked down.
But still, 6 gigs of RAM? 260M GTX? 2.53 GHz processor?
Sign me up!
I hope more details/pics/etc get released about the G71 soon. I'm really hoping it's legit, though I have no doubts in Sunny's information. -
The Newegg/BTOTech/and GenTechPC sites should have faster CPU's when the G51's are rolled out from them. Just a guess.
-
but its cheaper to get the g51 at BB and then get a Q9100 after for 200 -
where can I get a Q9100 for 200$? Also what processors can I put into the G51?
never mind I found what processors fit. -

Though the gpu vent almost looks like it has clear tape over half of it?
-
desmondhume333 - You can get them from ebay.. I had a link on one of these pages.. Dont know how far up you can go with the processor..
I am still here just had a long day at work.. I will start checking my graphic temps also and post them up. -
clutchx2 there was some weird clear tape over half of the vent that goes over the gpu, removed that(hope that doesnt mess up warranty) didnt make much of a difference after changing some things and trying nvidia 185.85 whql and modifiying the .inf file to support the gpu i installed those, got a little bit higher and better score in 3dmark06 and 3dmark03, and the max temps it got was 89c at stock clocks, and now powermizer is working and so far it got idleing when fan is going in low mode down to 53c for gpu during idle..
comparing this to the hp dv7-1262us that has a 9600m gs overclocked and e6400 intel cpu running both benches then watching temps, the hp cpu temps get up to 80c compared to around 70c ish for cpus in g51 laptop and then the max with overclock settings the 9600m gs gets up to is about 83c in the hp 17 inch laptop and in my g51 asus 89c so compared to that hunk of junk its getting good temps i guess... i guess its a keeper unless it gets worse, im not going to overclock the g51 for now... maybe later i can apply arctic silver or the icd7 stuff maybe that drop temps, i think the gpu on this one gets so hot the g51, due to theres alot more copper shims covering the gpu core, ram chips, and all the dam voltage regulators and one or two of the big black things compared to the g50 that didnt have a copper shim covering those misc things.. also there is some weird brownish see thru tape on chipset under heatsink and on cpu its bare.. maybe they used crappy thermal stuff..
also on my hp laptop the beast, there are vents like those on the g51 over certain areas, only one big vent for fan to blow air through on back of hp laptop compared to side vent on g51, also on the hp they made a little vent just big enough shaped as a circle over the fan core, now if i want to void warranty and make the same exact kind of circle vent right above fan core on g51, maybe that would cool it better as well.. also its like been 75F to 79F ambient room temp...
so now im off to tweak vista and uninstall everything and try out games and let ya know all how that goes.. thanks!!! -

The main reason argued for not putting a vent there is it will only actively cool the cpu and gpu. Everything else exposed will go from "active" to passive cooling.
Remember the GPU is cooled by the HOT air from the CPU cooling fins. Also as currently set up the air is draw over the rest of the GPU and the heatpipe itself. You will get lower temps, yes but are you comfortable with knowing you reduced the cooling on everything else?
I run myne bottom off on the cooler, so not only does the gpu run 15C cooler everything else is cooled still. -

So how about just getting cooling pads? How well do those work?

Hey guys, just wanted to drop in with a cool little detail.
My friend just called me from Best Buy and said they had the Asus G71GX, this model:
Model G71GX-RX05 will have the C2D P8700 with 6GB DDR2 Memory and 500GB HDD for $1149.99
(The one Sunny reported in on a while ago)
He couldn't find the screen res, but I would assume it isn't Full HD or anything, it's probably the standard one. He also couldn't find the hard drive RPM, but I'd bet it's 5400.
He told me it was all black, had the blue side lights, logo, etc. Also glowed around the mouse pad area, but he didn't say it had the red trim.
I'm going to go to Best Buy tomorrow and see if I can find anymore info.
EDIT: The graphics card for it was the 260M GTX, by the way. -
SteelersWorship Notebook Consultant
-
NO RED TRIM!! Please let it be true! lol I'm gonna try to stop by my local BB after the 26th
-
SteelersWorship Notebook Consultant
It has red trim.
-
But yes, you're right.
-
-
SteelersWorship Notebook Consultant
Cool that its in stores already. -
i really dont care about the red trim...
-
He said "No, just black."
Maybe it's a different style? The Best Buy versions could be, and probably are differently styled, y'know.
I'll go for myself and take pictures tomorrow, so unless my friend's a total liar, it's going to be black, no red, and with those specs. We'll see. -
well there are 3 different models so I'm going to hope that it does have a different coloring than the one from xotic.

lol you're telling me. I've been using the same Dimension 8200 desktop that I bought maybe like 8 years ago.
-
But 8? That's crazy, haha. Good time for an upgrade. -
they help with the air flow so the notebook stays cooler -
I'm guessing all of these http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=3486&name=Notebook%20Coolers would be pretty useless then. -
yeah they are universal....
but each one will be for a specific size of notebook...
yeah they really worth the investment
the one in the picture is about 70 bucks and i have some ppl that their notebooks temperature dropped around 10~15 C -
First post! So, I live in australia and as far as I know they arent going to be stocking the G51 (just like we only had a $4000 version of the g50vt) but I am considering buying one and shipping it from the US. From what ive been reading best buy only offer a local warranty but newegg offer the asus 2 year international warranty?
I know they dont ship overseas but I can organise a way to get it shipped. I was just curious about the warranty situations.
Since almost all of the "gaming" laptops in australia come with < 4650 GPU. -
I can't wait to but the ASUS G51 to replace this beast -
Hopefully the G71 won't be a flop and run pretty silently.
-
dude with 4k u can come to usa and get a AW with dual 280GTX SLi ....
-
-
As for shipping it to Australia, there's many online sites, many of whom are trustable and have good reviews around here on NBR, who ship internationallySo if you can wait for the official release (soon) and buy it off another site, it should be easy
Or make friends with someone in America, and they will ship it to you
Good luck! -
idk if its is a good idea call them cuz most of the time they dont know much about these new laptops .... go to ur local BB and take a look by urself and if u dont find it then u ask about it
but other than that idk cuz there are 2 BB here and one had it and the other one didnt have it -
Visiting AL from driving to a jobsite and ended up picking one up at Dothan. I couldnt find any specs about it at BestBuy or on the Box, ended up opening it up in the store. Once I found out what it was I picked it up! Now, to just go back to a Best Buy after the 26th for a return and resale.
I recently sold my M1730 World of Warcraft Edition and really love this unit. Its much more lightweight and fits in my messenger bag nicely. Runs extremely cooler as well. There out there and being sold, just gotta find it!
Oh, about notebook coolers...Make sure the fans blow the right way!!! You dont want a notebook cooler to intake from the bottom and up to the laptop with a laptop intake from the side and out the bottom.
Question: I may have missed it but does anyone know if this laptop will take 1066 Memory?Attached Files:

@Nebotsi
Could you mind telling us your GPU temps? We have some interesting info and sunny's hits 90C with 3DMark '06. Thanks,
~Ibrahim~ -
downloading ntune right now..lets see if i can get 3dmark
-
its skyhawk21 with the 90c gpu temp after running 3dmark06 and 3dmark03!!!
thats me!
anyhow the guy who got a g51 can you download hwmonitor 1.14 64 bit version and let it run, minimize it and run 3dmark06 and or vantage and 3dmark03 and see what ya get for temps afterwards and take a screenshot please?
the maker of cpu-z and cpuid makes the hwmonitor -
@netbosi
for how much did u sell ur xps? was it the one with the dual 8800GTX?? -
@skyhawk
Getting them downloaded and wil post SS when completed
@brunoroc
Ended up selling it for 2900 on eBay and yes it had 8800GTX in SLi
the new asus g51
