I do e-mail and chat support for a simulation game in addition to my day job, and I like to have my chat client and my internet browser open next to each other, sometimes with a word processor too. I rarely work on my netbook because I don't have the space to spread everything out the way I'm most productive. I like 1280x800ish on my 12" laptops![]()

I need to replace my 1920x1200 17 inch laptop of four years and I can honestly say, I don't know if I can go back to using a smaller, lower resolution screen...
-
anyone know what chipset they are planning to use?
and is it the same chassis as the g50v(T)?
if they use the same chipset can we as g50v(t) owners upgrade to the gtx 260?
i know no one knows but i had to ask anyway. lol -
You will not be able to upgrade the GPU. Asus uses a proprietary GPU and they will not sell anyone a GTX 260M separately. If you want the 260, you'll need to purchase the G51. -
-
I'm sure we can find a reverse mxm 260m somewhere. That or hope you talk to someone nice when you call Asus a few months from now lol. Plus no reason to dish for a 260 unless your cpu is over 2.7ghz.

If you were looking for the part itself I would wait until the first G51's become out of warranty and then find a buddy at a non asus, asus authorized repair center to call in and get the part and then sell it to you. -
Some pics:
I like the keyboard, looks like vaio keyboard. -
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
It looks as if they ditched the side LED's....?
-
According to this site, the 16,4" screen size it's gonna be the G60 (T9400, 2 x 320 GByte HDD) 1.349 Euro. -

Looks like the OLED is a goner unless its a really thin strip... -
But with a Quad and a 260 it could be pink that I will buy lol -

OLED being gone kills it for me, nothing but clean on the G50 lol its a flush part of the button strip. The button strip being small actually more me seems like buttns are a tiny tiny bit harder to hit. I am curious what the 2 power buttons are which is what lol they both look a little like power logos.
They simple fact is they never did anything with the OLED display anyways. If they thought the initial programing was going to hold us over for more than a week theyre dead wrong. Hell simple thing to add to that wasted black top left corner, plugged in status? Which btw is reported to direct console by sysinfo.dll.
Expect the quad model to pull a premium (while i predict an initial offering of G51's between 1200-1600 id expect a quad model to be 2000) and not be standard of course. -

+rep angel Great pictures
i love the white on this notebook........cannot wait
I also like the really cool matte black style finish inside simple yet elegant -
Nice find on the pics, metalangel. I'm loving the back-lit keyboard and the clean finish without those fancy side lights. The OLED display never really had any use for me, and I'm actually glad they got rid of that (helps preserve battery life somewhat).
-
I expect a Quad for under 1600, like sager NP8662
-
It's really much better looking than I thought from the original pics. It definitely seems more gender-neutral (or dare I say feminine) than the G50
. The OLED was never much more than an extra little toy to fiddle with anyways--I won't be missing it.
I'm a little concerned about the keyboard--the buttons look shallow. I hope they have a good feel to them. I also don't know about key placement on the numpad, but glad they kept that feature. -
Oh wow! That's actually really not so bad compared to the previous G series notebooks
I'm pleasantly surprised ^_^
While perhaps still a tid bit too flashy for the environment I'll be using my future laptop in, I still find it a very nice looking machine ^^ -
May I remind you all this thread is for the discussion of the ASUS G51. Not about upgrading GPUs of older notebooks, and not about other's careers. A bunch of posts have been deleted, if this continues this thread will be closed.

We have been edited lol.
My next laptop is an ASUS but it will not be the G51. I wasnt planning on the G51 anyways but if they were gonna strip if of the lights they missed one. OLED is a goner and while it was useless due to their own programming its useful to some of us. -
Those pictures really make it look nice.
Thought I wouldn't like it in white, but it's growing on me and good riddance to the flashing lights on the side, I'm sure they look cool at first but have no real purpose and get old quick. ( Oooooh.....flashing lights.*seizure*...who cares!)
The new look to the keyboard is fantastic, finally they got it right.
Overall looks very nice. -
HAHA we needed to be stopped clutch rofl. I just can't wait to see the inside of a g51. It's bothering me so much!!!!!!
-
I'm sure it looks similar to the G50 -

I do hope the finalized release date for this coincides more or less with the start of offering the Win7 free upgrade . . .
*excited* -
This is a happy thread again!
lol
I really liked the oled screen! It was just fun to play with but now it's actually really useful since I've customized it. I can't imagine not having the time/battery life/resource usage/GPU temps all right in front of me anymore.
FTR, Direct Console's OLED displays are absolutely dismal. So much potential that's just totally lost.
EDIT: Eeek, $1900? That's a bit pricey. Hopefully it'll come down a bit. -
-
1349 Euros = 1,909.9142 U.S. dollars -
no fullhd version??
-
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
That would probably only come to about $1700 USD -
-
But yeah, I'd miss the OLED screen.

I look the look over my orange, but the oled gone is a bummer.
I wonder if the G51 keyboard will be a direct replacement for the G50? even if it dont light. I dont so much care about the backlight on it, while that would be cool I like the number key layout better... Ours has the darn . key on top which messes me up always. lol
As for the GPU, I know not in this thread but an FYI, asus will sell them just not for the first 3-6 months and they dont make them public in everyone can order them. You just have to tell them your unit is not under warranty or warranty is voided and be willing to pay. Just dont expect it to be under $400which at that point you question is it worth it. Also depends who you know and talk to. I have had good people being helpful on the notebook side.
But anyway I cant wait to see who gets these and can show more pictures of the guts and we can compare what can be swapepd and what cant be.
The GPU would be nice, but I like the keyboard better too... The color I guess I can deal with. Can always paint my orange another color, haha. Just got to wait 3 years for the warranty to end. lol -
-
I paid $2000+ for my G1S, lol. I thought the G50V was a steal at about $1400.
-
-
I'll probably stick with the G50Vt because of the G51 keyboard. The new keyboards are all cramped together so it's hard for me to press the buttons.
-
will the screen on this be dual lamp?
-
no lamps in an LED.
shallow keys would suck though, backlit or not. after having 1680x1050 on my G50, no way i can go back to less and still use photoshop/3ds max/visual studio... -
but it should be as bright as a dual lamp screen correct?
-
-
Does anyone know if the first release of a G51(X1) most likely, will it feature Blu-Ray Player and Quad Core CPU or do I have to wait a few months for that?
I am trying to decide if I should wait for G51, get G71 or better yet get W90Vp-A1? -
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
The X1 would not be the first model designation... and would most likley have neither anways as it is an el cheapo designation.
A1 and chance are there will be quad and bluray equiped models at first offering.
No one actually knows anything, including most of asus. Would be all over the net if someone in the general public knew. -
Wow, after seeing those new pics, I think it looks even better that I had originally thought it would! It's not as flashy/bright as the G50, but there is still enough to catch most people's eye. Plus that keyboard with number pad looks like it'll be great for me...and it's backlit!!!
How do you guys think the speakers will be on this thing? I haven't heard a G50, so I can't compare to that...but do you guys think it'll be similar? The grill above the keyboard doesn't look like much for a laptop that size, so I'm expecting the worst, but it can't be any worse than my W3J's speakers!!! -
-
HOLY MOLY THE G51... might just change my mind... it just looks too damned sexy.. the lid design is... o so DIFFERENT.. yet satisfying without the nasty orange ;D
-
what differences will be between new released models? price also?

Shall we petition asus for a 1680x1050 screen from now?
Seriously, I'll be heartbroken if this thing doesn't come in 1680x1050.
the new asus g51
