this aint good! Crysis 32bit mode all settings on high at full res screen is capable of in windows vista 64 sp1 playing for 10 minutes and gpu got up to 97c cpus got up to 63c.. what is going on with this gpu did asus even QC these before sending them out? hey sonny can u post yer temps after running crysis for 10 minutes playing it? thanks, these gpus or cooling solution for em might be defective
or the temp readings are way off?

Lol RMA looks like it may be in effect.

What's the SKU number for the G71? From the picture it looks like 9366615?
Gonna start calling around to see who has them. -
The chassis, though, is probably a bit bigger. There's still a fair amount of it from the edges of the screen. It's a rather big 17", if you ask me.
And yeah, games, and everything, looks greatest at its native res, and like you said, a 1440x900 with this graphics chip is a pretty good combo, if you ask me.
I hope heating isn't a issue with this new line, seeing as I've always already had heating issues with my laptops. -
-
Got it. Thanks for the new G71 info!
Definitely. 1440x900 is a dead-set, you'll be fine forever combo for this. You could most definitely add some AA, too.
Thanks, mate!

I just need money. . .any one wanna donate some to the "imaneedsomecoinznowplz" foundation.
-
Exactly! That's what I was figuring! Future games will run better and still look great at that res! 1900x1200 can be taxing in future games and it won't look as well if you lower it. Native ftw, hahaha. -
-
I don't think I would even need to upgrade the CPU for a while. Maybe in several months I'll upgrade to a quad core but for now the P8700 seems fine.
-
Though I still dunno about the overclocking though, like I showed in that one pic, it was giving me a weird message thing and it didn't seem to overclock.
I hope that still works (I'm sure it must...), because the "legit" overclocking function was an awesome one. -

97C?!?! Let me get my bunker gear before I even try this thing. This is beyond insane. I'm hoping they meant 67C, not freaking boiling point for water.

Play grid max'd high ultra, 1366x768 with 16xQCSAA play for 10 minutes can get 10 degrees hotter then most games, Crysis and all. I have the laptop setup bare bottom to the cooler Far Cry 2 doesnt go over 75C and Grid still gets it to 90C. -
hey guys so this means one of two things..
1. this is normal for this gpu and laptop although its alot hotter than the 9800m in the g50's for the most part
2. the cooler is defective or the paste/thermal pads they used.
I inspected mine closely for an half an hour, tightened all the cooler screws more, pushed down on them to make sure flush which they were, the cooler fan is working great and sounds like its working like it should..
IM using 185.85 whql nvidia mobile drivers with a custom modded .inf file i did myself..
here are the crysis benchmarks using crysis 32bit, ver. 1.21 dx10 mode 1366x768 res everything high with blood enabled, NO AA, using crysis built in benchmark .bat files..

will try dx9 mode in 32bit later in vista!
P.S. puttin different paste voids warranty.. temp readings could be off on this thing i dunno! -
Anyway to change out to the cooler on laptops or is that market not readily available like in the desktop? -
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
Sorry spent all my life at sea level.
Anyone with fabrication skills could fabricate a new cooler, its pretty similar to the G50 setup, think the cpu and fan section is 100% the same. Really the biggest thing I would change that's not easily changeable is the fan management.
Outside of making the fan housing and fins out of copper and or adding some super conductive materials there isnt much you can do with it. The system is force draw meaning there is no direct opening to the fan, this is intended to cool all the components not just whats attached to the heat pipe.
I dont have a bag to fit all my new gear yet so its mostly a desk machine so leaving it bottom off on the cooler works well for me. Runs 15C cooler then it normally would. 5C cooler with the bottom on. The T9600 really turned the heat up on the GPU.
With alot of skill maybe a tiny bit of chassis cutting you could reverse the situation, use hot gpu air to cool the cpu instead of the opposite how it is now. -
That makes me sad. The day I went to pick up the G50 they sold out. GF said it was a sign to wait, I said it was a sign I was too slow to act. I might just go for a 9600 if it means not setting my nuts on fire.
-
do some clean install and take all of that crap out of there thats why uguys a re gettting high temperatures ... BB crap programs....
-
So what are normal temps for the CPU and GPU? I'm gonna guess around 50-60 C?
-
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
In 32 bit and DX9 tests XP came out slightly ahead but in general 2 frames per second wasnt worth running xp lol. Best buy doesnt install any bloatware that I know of, in order to really call it bloatware it needs todo more then just take up hard drive space.
Between a clean 7 and Vista loaded i didnt do alot of benching but in what i did I didnt see any difference, one leading me to laugh at the asus bloatware concerns and at the need to rush out and grab 7. I might get it after the G51 gets its 7 compatible software.
Freeing up some hard drive space and turning off a camera app isnt gonna reduce my gpu temperature much lol. Reducing cpu temp by 10C only affected the GPU by 2C. -

Does anyone have any info about the gpu on the U81-RX05?
-
What is the size of the powerbrick it comes with?
Learux -
i heard the g51 draws air in from the side and blows the hot air out of the bottom of the laptop, can anyone confirm/disprove this?
-
abj27 - I posted info about the U81 several pages ago..
U81-RX05 will have the C2D T6500 with 4GB DDR2 memory and 320GB HDD... As far as the graphic card goes it might come with either the old 9300 as the old model or maybe even the 9800.. who knows.. This model is priced at $649.99 -
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
Its the same as the G50 it sucks from multiple vents on the bottom and blows out the left side. The majority of the chassis is the same the bottom panel is the same and the cpu section of the cooling system appears to be the same. -
With temps going to 95+ is it any concern in the long run? Seems pretty intense to me. I never had a laptop so I don't know what to expect.

Using Vista 64bit with SP1 and all fresh updates, DX9/DX10 march 2009 updates crysis ver 1.21 32bit mode with dx9 the game is smooth as butter at full res laptop can put out!
will be trying later DMC4 benchmark and gta4 and all my games off of steam! -
I feel like i should really learn how to read benchmark tests..
But are you saying that you have no issues with this laptop running crysis smoothly on high, even with only 2.0 GHz? or is 2.0 really not as bad as everyone makes it seem. (this is my first laptop purchase). I would get the G71 because i dont mind a bit extra size for the CPU upgrade, but no backlit-keyboard, and less battery life is a killer... every minute counts
But, buying stock = running new games on high without problems?
how long could i last without having to buy something that puts out at least 2.53 GHz? -
Hypothetically, how would one go about screwing up one's G50VT's motherboard so that one could use his/her warranty to try and score a new G51?
-
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
2.0 Ghz is okay for crysis the 2.2 Ghz recomendation for vista is something I agree with. Crysis is not cpu bottle necked its balanced but more gpu then cpu. You can turn down the physics a little if you need to and the G51 will overclock to make up the 200 mhz if you are running into issues.
I had some occasional sound glitches at 2.13 Ghz on the G50 overclocked it a little and no issues.
-
Like Clutchx2 said.. 2.0 is not that bad.. sure it can use a little more but I had no issues running games like Crysis on it. Plus i have posted in my thread that you can overclock the cpu a little and would bring the temp up by 2 degrees on the cpu..
-
-
thanks guys. Im excited, i thought that if i got the G51 i'd have to drop the bones for at least an 8700... but this is great.
just was concerned cuz min. system specs on a few games coming out are 2.4 GHz (SWTOR) and 2.66 GHz (Prototype) .. which seem really high, but maybe cuz its assuming a lower quality GPU?
does a higher GPU balance out a CPU in performance ? or are they not really "corely" related? -
No correlation at all between a GPU and a CPU. You could toss a nVidia 6200 onto an i7 @ 4GHz rig and still get horrible FPS in games.
Games today require more GPU than CPU, but that is slowly changing (as those new specs show). A moderate CPU with a fast GPU is what's needed today, IMO, for today's games and a bit into the future.

I have a few games that wouldnt perform well on the G51VX-RX05 that would perform better on my current setup all due to the CPU. Plenty of games that will, older games and current games like Devil May Cry 4 that dont use physics and have a joke of an AI. Most people are buying this to play modern games a cpu upgrade will be a must at some point. To start any game that i put in the G50VT Performance thread that doesnt mention needing a better cpu will run good and some will run better on the 260M.
P8700 new is an oem only is it not, should be able to find one used though.
Far Cry 2 will run fine with the physics turned down, But games like World In Conflict and the poorly ported GTA 4 will be horrible. as i said DMC 4 will be fine, crysis is okay I would overclock for it though and the GPU will have a good advantage, all racing games should run very well on the RX05.
P7350 is crap but will do to start, P7350 is NOT a moderate cpu in my opinion. P8600 is but not worth the cash, T9600 or higher is in my opinion. Oh and check with GenTechPC they might still have that T9550 for sale. -
-
anyone know how much this weighs?
-
i guess its about 8~9 pounds ...i might be wrong
-
@soulbreaker
i really dont know.... u might do some googling to find out -
How much what weighs? The G51 weighs 7.7lbs dont know about the U81 Prolly around 6lbs or less

Checked at the Best Buy site and still no G51. I'm really eager to see what the pricing and specs of the BB model will be.
A U81? I've only seen a U80...also no U81 at the ASUS website. Is this a future model of the U series? -

BB is currently gearing up for back-to-school. You may notice that at nearly every store the current laptop inventory is on clearance.
Most stores, including the one Im at, dont want to sacrifice current sales by telling people about the upgrade that is prominently put on nearly every new sku laptop. My own store has three G51's and one of the mid level asus ones.
You probably wont find it at BB.com for another week since they really want to get rid of the old stock if possible. -
im guessing the g71 will be around 8.5lbs. im probably not going to be taking that thing anywhere much.
the new asus g51
