the gtx260m vbios is part of the system bios (judging by the g71 downloads page), so if anyone does manage to get their hands on a 260m, be sure to add a module to your existing g50v/t for it.

Why dont you just look at the weight of a current G71 model? G71 is NOT new just the new G71 models are lol. David has owned a G71 longer than I have owned my G50.

Here is the information you requested. This is done with all defaults right out of the box. No overclocking, factory gpu drivers nvidia 179, factory clocks everything. Now to read through the 12 pages I missed in one day :D

BTW: The video drivers are not able to be updated through Nvidia, seems like were stuck with Asus to make an update out.

maybe this explains the heat issues with the same exact layout as the g50.. the g50 video card in the picture anyways is a g94 core with no shim frame around the core so cooler would sit right on core..

the g51 with the 260m if that is the exact same gpu card in the g51 laptop then it has a shim on the gpu, the shim could be making it so the heatsink/cooling exhaust is not sitting flush on just the core of the gpu..

    make sense?

thanks nebotsi, so 3 of us so far has the ASUS G51 from bestbuy first shipments version and all of them with 3dmark06 and other games and graphically intense applications, get up to 90C and beyond, i ran vantage benchmark and the gpu got to 94c then i ran DMC4 benchmark and it got up to 99C for the gpu, the whole time the cpus stay around 65-70c

interesting maybe then the system sensor is strange or in a weird location or is just giving the wrong temps of the gpu!!

Makes sense but i dont think that shim is sitting up that high.. If the heat sink did not sit on the core then the core would overheat instantly..

Yea I know I checked reviews of G71 on cnet and couple other websites and there were different G71 models and most of them weighed from 8.3-8.6lbs.

One thing I just found today is there is a 3dmark update for the G51 on ASUS website under G51 downloads in support. Downloaded it and Installed with no changes to score or temps. Cant remember what it was suppose to do, lol..sorry for my bad memory.

Just out of curiosity what is the mfg date of your units. Mines 05-2009, with June 26th coming up soon and possibility the release of the laptop,if there are temp differences maybe it will help?

Min processor for Prototype is actually 1.86Ghz; at least that's what it says on the back of the box. I also think they mention 7800 gtx for the video card so I'm guessing the GTX 260 will run this game quite happily.

Little concerned about those high GPU temps reported a few pages back though. Reminds me a bit of my current laptop's 6800go which can climb up to 100c after an hour or so of gaming  But it's still been working fine after 4 years. Still have to wonder about the lifespan when the GPU gets so hot.

I was just thinking about the same thing 2 hours ago. I am currently in a 5 hour loop of 3dmark and 2 hours into it. We will see what the temps max out at.

Like I mentioned in Sunny's review thread, if you really want to stress test your GPU, try FurMark. It's pretty heavy on a GPU, probably the hardest of any tester. If it passes FurMark for 10-15 minutes, I'd say its golden for a few years. :)

But, again, it's uber-intensive. I'd not recommend it for the light-hearted or those who like their warranties. I'm in no way responsible for anything that happens.

    But, it's an idea.

Stop at the local BB today and out of curiosity I checked to see if they have any of the new ASUS setups. They had the new G51, G71 and K50.

Unfortunately they were not out but in the locker. The salesman would not take them out or sell them. I guess at least as the story goes they are not allowed to sell them until June 26th due to the fact they contain the free upgrade to windows 7 stuff inside the boxes. I wasn't there for the laptops so I just rolled the eyes and moved on.

Yep you got that right, BB is definitely getting ready for back to school sales..

I'm going for the G51, $1000 is my limit and the added cpu power will just mean more heat and less hardware life (I will upgrade processor after warranty dies). But do you think BB will come out with any other gaming type laptops soon or should I just buy this July 1st?

awesome. did you buy a g51? or did you find a place that sells the 260m?
edit: any copper modding to cover the mem chips (like the stock g51 pics)?

also for the g51, is the battery really 4800mAh? just curious, since the m50/g50 battery is 5200mAh @ 12V.

Can anyone guess when the Newegg version of G51 will appear?
I need to make the purchase before July 10th. If the G51 doesn't hit the newegg by then, I am forced to buy G71 from BB.

G51 variations better have P8700 and anything equal to or larger than 1440X900 resolution.

Not sure like I said they were all in the locker so I was at the mercy of the stock clerk. I will try to check tomorrow, but I think it was the K50-AB but I will confirm.

BB laptop/notebook departments are looking mighty scarce atm and some folks keep mentioning that its because they are gearing up for the return to school which is not the case. BB is doing there best to clear out all the current stock because starting shortly (I believe 6/26) they will be rolling out the Windows 7 upgrade program. IIRC anything purchased before the 26th is not eligible for the free upgrade from Vista to 7. Not to mention a good number of manufacturers are also providing new models to coincide with the new release.

here is some information for those who was looking for international model or model in europe area... The box of the G51 and the laptop itself on the bottom stickers says the system motherboard is a G60VX, and when you search for that in yahoo it comes up with german press releases from asus about a model of laptop called the G60VX which is the same as the G51 but its comes with a 16" lcd display instead of 15.6" lcd, two hard drives in raid, a intel t9400, bluetooth, and a 2.0mp camera the press release was at end of may and there was one in June 2009, and it says the laptop in germany will be released at end of june 2009, so this model will be of course the more beefy model with higher price and you can probably get at newegg.com and other online places.. it sure is not a specific best buy model.. here is link!

    http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translat...how.aspx?id=15964&lp=de_en&btnTrUrl=Translate

PS the press release also says it gets over 10,000 3dmark06

I wonder if these more beefier models and the 17 and 18" versions have a better cooler on them?, and they just used the old cooler in the G50 series for the first release g51 series?

Im just curious was their doubt that non best buy models wouldn't have it? Only doubt from me would be this gpu heat we are seeing that's actually expected due to the 260M but still way more then anyone desires.

Oh and btw middle of june has passed its the 22nd already lol. The 26th does make sense due to the whole vista 7 program but we will see. Nice to see their getting shipments out.

Im actually having momentary thoughts of selling my x5.....

Well we weren't exactly sure if it did have the OC feature ( me anyway) considering the BB version does not.
My thinking was maybe ASUS knew the 260 GTX ran hot in this laptop and a OC feature would fry the sucker.
They did remove the little OLED screen on this update so they could have removed the OC feature too so I wasn't sure.
What's great news about this is factory OC feature means better cooling solution ( I hope) so if the heatsink is better in the retail version it means members that bought the BB version might be able to possibly buy and instaall the better heatsink to help with the high temps.
Yeah sorry meant to say ETA mid JULY

Ill have to go reread the RX05 review i missed something i think. Time to try and transplant the direct console files, pll is the same should still work. OC feature was not hardware based. Though the method used in direct console could be incompatible.

I am a little worried about a T9900 or Quad Model paired with that 260M, should easily hit the 110C max in GRiD, without even trying.

I know OC was not hardware based but ASUS made OCing so easy with a couple of clicks, done.
Again if ASUS has a different heatsink for the retail version of the G51 ( meaning other than BB, which I suspect they might because it will support Quad's straight from the factory).
ASUS probably went cheap and stuck the BB version with a inferior heatsink to save a few bucks.

Unless there gonna make the entire thing out of copper this time or add superconductive material worth more then the laptop my only suggestion is to cool the CPU with GPU air instead of the way the G50V/VT's and so far G51VX's do hot cpu air is used to cool the gpu.

Thanx alot.. i was an idiot and just saw that he posted it on his review.. we'll i actually just called Asus support.. and was trying to get them to spill out some readings they may have gotten but basically the guy said they should not be selling it until June 26th.. soo maybe the june 26 release ones will have a newer cooling system?? I'm not 100% sure.. But basically he told me there shouldn't be any sold before June 26 b/c of the windows 7 upgrade.

ALso i work at Best Buy in Missouri for Geek Squad. and the store i work at hasn't had any g51's in stock or even the g71's in stock.. soo maybe the new ones that will be shipped out have newer gpu's??

And how long does one of those test's take to run??

Also has anyone tried to undervolt the machine?? i've read a review on here about undervolting and was wondering if that will decrease the temperature at all??

These are the June 26th ones. I'm certain they wouldn't do a stealth release of one model for only 2 weeks and then switch to another. That wouldn't make any sense at all.

BTW. After that post I'm praying for anyone who takes their computers to geek squad.
