Yeah, the G51 uses the PM45 chipset which supports VT-d. I wonder why ASUS went with the P43 for the G71... not only does it not support VT-d but it also doesn't qualify for the Centrino branding.
-
OOoo. VT-d
*drool* -
From my understanding, Xen is the only VM that can use VT-d and Xen is mainly designed to virtualize Linux (it can virtualize Windows but I don't know how well). All you need is VT-x to do Windows XP Mode in Windows 7.

RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
P43 supports 16GB of DDR2(8 in 3), G71 has 3 ram slots. PM45 supports up to 8GB of ram and the G50/51 only has 2 ram slots. Centrino branding isnt typically important in that class, besides the fact that this time next year it wont exist. -
I'm thinking of buying the G51 on Friday. I've read the last 20 pages of this thread, but I don't game at all. I do do a lot of photoshop, some video editing, multi-tasking, playing of music, surfing, ect. Will this heat problem that maybe exists - if it does exist - will it be a problem for me, if I never play a game in my life on this thing? tia.

Nothing is Real Notebook Evangelist
You would definitely want a better processor than the one that comes default with the G51 for your uses since the programs you want to use are processor heavy.
By the way, you should get a quad if you do upgrade considering that multitasking, photoshop, and video editing (especially encoding) would all benefit from having 4 cores. -
Yeah but some other guy stated that the tempt jumped to at least 90 after only 10 min of gaming on Crysis. I don't really consider that intensive gaming for hours on end...
-
I can't do that upgrading stuff tho - I need to buy a laptop and have it be what I need out of the box. I thought the G51 was really powerful (hence it being a gaming laptop). Do you have any suggestions? I was also looking at the Dell Studio XPS 16. (sorry to hijack this thread btw, I made a thread in the "what notebook should I buy" forum a few days ago).
-
Get the G71 if you don't mind the size. It's only a 150 bucks more expensive and has a way better CPU. That's what I'm prob going to pick up on Friday if my local Best Buy has one. Also I'm using my laptop in somewhat similar ways as you are going to.
-
We'll have to see how the G71 performs (cooling particularly).
I'm personally thinking about buying the cheapest model and then buying a 1920x1200 LED LCD replacement for it. I just need to find one that comes with the inverter. -
What would people consider buying besides the g51 and g71 for the price?
Also, any updates on when places like newegg are going to start selling? -
You could go for the Sager 8662 if you got the money. Otherwise the previous G50vt models weren't bad and still aren't.
-
So far, the only three things holding me back from the G71 is:
1. It lacks Intel VT-d, which I have no use for currently, but could see myself desiring it in the future.
2. I don't know if it would be too large to use on an airplane (I do air travel occassionally, and it would be nice to be able to use it mid-flight).
3. I need to see reviews to make sure its a quality build. -
Not many good bang for buck options right now. Gateway has been silent, but I guess there's Sager/Clevo notebooks.
Don't listen to yourself
. You don't want #1 and probably won't later on, #2, the chassis isn't much larger than the G51 since the G51 is based on a 17" chassis, #3, would agree with you here though. Think that can be said for a lot of products.
-
I would consider the refurbed gateway $750 deal if it ever came back!
-
Also, does anyone know if best buy's warranty is international? Or only in the USA? I wanted to travel to S. Korea and was wondering if it would be covered there?
-
unfortunately BB warranty isn't. the higher end models will have the 2yr international warranty
-
Thanks,
Higher end models at BB? They are going to have them? Or found through a different company? -
not that I'm looking to buy, but just curious:
I can't find the G51 on any American websites. -
Lethal Lottery Notebook Betrayer
It's not out yet online. -
Just a quick question: Where does it say the 1-year warranty when buying through Best Buy doesn't work globally? From my understanding, ASUS covers notebook warranties globally, its just that the warranty offered through Best Buy is shorter, doesn't include the zero-bright dot or accidental protection warranty, and possibly doesn't include the free shipping.
-
I just picked up a G71GX-RX05 from Best Buy. I know this is going to sound crazy, but do I open it?
Not sure if I even need it.Attached Files:

-
How much did it cost?
-
1149.99 plus tax. I had a $40 reward zone certificate that I used so I got it for $1166 and change.
-
Open it now and put it through its paces! Write up a good review (photos, performance, detailed specifications, temperature, noise, etc.) and I (and may others probably) will give you some rep.
You will make me happy. However, don't open it at my expense (only open it if you think you'll use it, which I'm guessing you will, since you bought it afterall). I'm not sure if you can exchange an opened item at Best Buy, but if you can and you decide to open it, exchange it for itself (or a different one of the same model) tomorrow so you get the free Windows 7 upgrade.
You'd be really doing me and some other people on this forums a favor by giving us a review though (hopefully today, because if I like what I see, I may take the plunge tomorrow). -
Do it!!! Or, wait until tomorrow and do an exchange for the same item to save yourself another 50 bucks for a windows 7 upgrade....
-
nice box... y u did not wait until friday...tomorrow...???
edit:since u have it right now just OPEN IT

Lethal Lottery Notebook Betrayer
Best But restocking fee, beware, they charged my on gateway p78111!!! Dont open it unless you are prepared to possibly loose 150-250 on a restocking fee. -
Ya I have the same question in mind.
Can someone point out where does it explicitly say that? -
When I asked about the 26th voucher in the box for Windows 7, they just told me to bring it back tomorrow and they will do a "exchange" *wink, wink* so I can qualify for it.
The funny thing is the Store Manager is the one that approcahed me and asked if I needed any help. I told her that I was looking for this model, and that I was told by another store that her store had one in stock. After doing some checking, she told me that she could sell it to me before the "official" date, which is the 28th. There wasn't even a display model or sales tag for this yet. I think I got my hands on it before Geek Squad could get it ready to be the display model.
On a side note, I noticed in their system it said that the sales time for this unit was from 6/28/09 thru 9/27/09. So it looks like it may only be around for three months? -
The Best Buy's in my area don't have the restocking fee. They did away with it.
-
So if its not out yet online, where is it out? Best Buy?
-
Correct. At least the version that BB has.
-
Unless you are 5" tall, you aren't even opening G51 in coach, and G71 has more width and depth by an inch or two. So, either get a smaller laptop or fly business/first class
.
-
Even in bulkhead seats? And did you mean 5' because I think 5" tall people only exist in fairy tales...
-
Open it!! We're all waiting for a G71 review!
You win internet if you tell us how hot it runs with benchmarks.
-
Congrats Keith1341 on the purchase.. Would be great if you can toss us some temp readings and benchmarks..
-
Ugh, I just got hit for 15% on a notebook I returned recently. Ended up costing me $148.00.
-
Anyone camping out for one tonight
wOOt
-
Temp reading is a def for the G71... I've been waiting for that for a few days... I'm going to check my local best buy tomorrow to see if they got it. By the way what did you ask your Best Buy Keith?
-
nice ... il be waiting for the review
-
Could someone give me the specs on the new G71 that's mentioned in this thread, or link me to somewhere that has them? Google is failing me, and I'm wondering if I should get the G71 instead of the 51...
-

Keith1341 we are waiting for some photos
PS: should't this be in another thread its a G51 thread not G71... -
Thanks so much Matrinix
I assume the RAM is expandable to 8 gigs?
The only thing that makes me hesitate is the 5400 rpm drive... would really rather a 7200. The speed makes a big difference in performance, no? -
I think someone said on the other G71 thread there's really no noticeable difference between the hard drives.
-
I heard its a 3 slot. So up to 12 gigs. Also someone did state on the topic I made that if its a WD drive, there is no difference between the 5400 rpm and the 7200 rpm. However, it's really only a load speed / install speed difference. You really shouldn't see any performance difference in apps from what I know. Maybe someone can clear this up for me, and whomever else wants to know.
Overall, if you don't mind the 17", I think its a better deal than the 15". As long as there is no heat problems. -
Btw, guys I just talked to someone at Best Buy. The person claims that the there are 3 different G71 models. Does anyone know about this? She was talking about like a G71V or something like that.
-
I don't mind 17" - I only bring my laptop out of the house once or twice a month, so size doesn't really matter. I'm just trying to get the laptop with the best performance possible.
To be honest I'm kind of lost - I don't know what's more important - is it the processor speed, how much ram you have, the hard drive speed, or a combo of one or more of the above? I've been like - I HAVE to have at least 4 gigs of ram expandable to 8, and a 7200 rpm drive. Then I find this forum and just from the last couple days I've spent reading threads, it seems that it's processor speed that's more important, and a 2.0 isn't that great, and you really want a 2.4 at least. It's all so confusing :/ -
If you're talking about the G51's (BB model) processor, clocked at 2.0 GHz, it's horrible. That's just a fact. You do want around 2.4 or higher, I personally wouldn't go any lower than a 2.53 (The BB G71's P8700 processor).
RAM is important, but 4 gigs should be fine.
The RPM on a hard drive isn't that important, you won't notice very much difference.
If I were to tell you the 2 most important thing on a gaming laptop, it'd be CPU (processor) and GPU (video card).
