Thanks for the info :) I'm leaning towards the G71 now. Just waiting to hear if my friend at Best Buy can get me a discount or not, but either way, I'll hopefully have my new laptop by Sunday.

Can anyone tell me where I can buy cheap laptop processors? Is it easy to replace?

Yes, I completely agree with you. I was looking at the G51 way more than the G71 before I heard it had a horrible processor.

With 6 gigs of ram, a P8700 processor, the 260M GTX video card, and a resolution of 1440x900 (which I think is fine, personally. I don't need some mega HD screen), for $1,150? (G71, of course, haha) Total steal.

Well online stores mostly. Where do you live? In Canada I have a couple of stores, NCIX is one of them I think, also Agile Electronics. Pretty easy, just need thermal paste and the correct socket. Might need bios update but I don't think it will be likely since it's a fairly new system. A lot of people suggest Ebay, but I wouldn't just because but a lot of people have had good luck.

Anyone know if it's really easy to swap HDDs? I think when Win7 comes out I wanna swap it with a SSD. Anything I need to look out for when buying? (eg. specific size, connection type, etc)

I recommend buying either laptop online...even if it is an extra hundred...for the wonderful warranty that Asus usually gives its costumers...

I believe it was Sunny who told us that last week, but unless you're going after the G71 RX5 for its price, I don't know how much sense the other two models make if they only come with a one year warranty. If the other two models are being sold with Asus 2 year warranty (which cuts into Best Buy's profit potential for add-on warranty sales) then it makes more sense and I may rethink my present intent of buying from Newegg.

    A huge difference...

Best buy only offers a one year parts and labor warranty in the USA.

Asus usually offers a 2 year GLOBAL warranty with one year ACCIDENTIAL damage...You could put your laptop in a blender and they would replace it for you...Best Buy will not do that...

considering the G71GX-A1 is going for $1968 on xoticpc, that just seems wild. I'm really curious the exact specs... The A1 has a q9000 instead of p8700 (say $250 difference max. right?), higher res screen (another $150), and the expanded warranties. I don't see how they got it that low, but if so, it's a great deal.

Problem is, the search tools were disabled nearly 3 weeks because they kept crashing the site and causing us 404 errors. We were told they were being taken offline until they could solve the issue.

If its working now, its welcomed news to me.

I have yet to be provided with any evidence that the warranty when bought from Best Buy only works in the US and is not global. Can you provide me with documentation to support this claim?

Yeah, from my understanding, since the warranty is handled through ASUS, as long as you take it (or send it) to an ASUS service center (which are around the world), they should repair it... there may be something on the Best Buy warranty card that excludes this coverage, but the warranty terms on ASUS' web site implies that it should be fine (and I'm not talking about the ASUS 360 warranty that resellers get, I'm talking about the standard non-ASUS 360 warranty on their support site).

Not true.. For a price best buy does offer an accidental coverage on their laptops.. Just ask any associate and they will fill you in with the info.. To keep the cost down on the laptops that best buy sells, they only offer one year on most laptops from the manufacture.. if you want more coverage then just ask.. Best buy also offers international warranties. I know this because i work in the computer department at best buy in Florida.

So did anyone ever find out any more difference between

    Model G71GX-RX05 will have the C2D P8700 with 6GB DDR2 Memory and 500GB HDD for $1149.99

    and the

    Model G71GX-RBBD09 will have the C2Q Q9000 with 6GB DDR2 Memory and 500GB HDD for $1399.99?

Also anyone know when the G71GX-RBBD09 is releasing?

They offer, however its not directly through ASUS. Besides ASUS's international warranty is only worth something if your traveling to a country where its worth a crap like say canada lol.

Ugh I'm torn... I really would prefer the G51 over the G71, but only if the heating issues are resolved and I can get it with a higher-end processor. So I'm waiting for the newegg versions to come up... if they do before the end of July.

Can somebody tell me the difference between the warranty coverage you get through Best Buy vs one you purchase online? And does getting warranties through BB cost much more? I'm unfamiliar with how everything with Asus works...

Nothing I got it from Sunny. By the way etb513, I'm sure newegg or anywhere else online stuff is going to cost at least 1,500 bucks for a G51 model. I mean if you are really looking for cheap laptops with crazy good graphics card, you can only find it at BB. This is b/c it's really stripped down with all the other CPU, screen, and etc.

That why I'm prob picking up the G71 tomorrow, b/c I personally can't even stand the G51's CPU (which is worse than my current laptop)...

It's at least 720p, so which means its pretty much full HD in marketing terms.

I read a while back that Sunny said that there was no OC Feature on the 51 however "Similar to the G70 series of Asus laptops, the G51Vx and G60Vx also sport the “Extreme Turbo” profile to allow automatic overclocking. So, in theory, you should be able to squeeze a few more frames per second out of these…". http://hothardware.com/cs/forums/t/43722.aspx and a couple other sites.

    375mm x 265mm x 34.3~40.6mm, 3.3kg (6 cell battery and single HDD)

And no news on Newegg US and Newegg Ca

If someone hasn't already done it by the time I get off work (around 1:30PM CT), I'm going to run to Best Buy and try to do some tests on the G71GX-RX05... at the very least run furmark. Does anyone have any tests that can fit on a flash drive that won't take too long to do that they'd like me to do?

I'll see if I can run the Xtreme Burn Test from FurMark for a few minutes on the G51VX-RX05 after I get done testing the G71GX-RX05. How long does 3dmark06 take to run, and can it fit on a 1GB flash drive? If so, I'll see if I can run that on the G71GX-RX05 when I go.

P.S. Is there any special settings I should set for the Xtreme Burn Test other than native resolution and to log the temps? Should I enable MSAA?

I don't really have to tell them about it... :p But, if they ask, I'll just tell them that I'm doing it to test the performance to determine if I want to buy it. If letting me do it will allow them to possibly sell it to me, then I'm sure they wouldn't mind.

"yeah I was reading that and I'm running hwmonitor now doing some test runs. I ran Devil May Cry 4 DX10 mode for a good half hour and max temp was at 88 celsius (can't remember min). someone said their temps went to 99 c playing this game for 10 mins."
