Bah. I still find it really lame. Hate being broke, lol. 50$ is a lot to me. Considering tax.

    Lame.
That's not what comes to mind about this laptop.Maybe the BB version with slow CPU and low res screen.
It certainly can't be the retail version.
Care to explain why you think it's lame.

Unless he edited after you posted, he clearly means the price change.

To some people fifty bucks means a lot.

Heh. Wait a second, I just compared the specs between the G51 and the G50 (both Best Buy versions) and I didn't really notice that much of a difference. I mean, sure, the G51 has a better video card (sort of) and 512mb more video memory and the G50 has that somewhat adorable (sorry) OLED screen that got taken out in the newer models, but what incentive do I have of choosing the G51 over the G50 when they're so much alike? I'm sure they perform almost similarly, right? I just might get the G50 if there's not much difference.

PS, AND the G50 has a faster processor? What's that about?

    The G51 has a mecha-inspired cover?

In all honesty, the CPU difference is negligible between the two. Sure, you'll get slower performance in CPU-heavy tasks, but for games--which is what the G51 "Republic of Gamers" laptop is geared towards--the (significantly) higher-end GPU will be a telling factor. Yes, yes, it's been downclocked, but it's not hard to clock it back up provided you cool this beast.

I'd say the G51 is hands-down better than the G50.

There is one review on BB website and a guy says that it's not possible to clock the GPU even to its normal stock clocks.
Can someone confirm/ disagree with that?

Are these the stock clocks of the 260M GTX?
    550 1375 950

What are the stock cloks in the G51?

What program did u use (Rivatuner, NVIDIA ESA Tools?) Did u notice any huge temp increase?

I bought the G51 a few days ago and Im having MAJOR wifi problems
i cant get out of this room without losing the signal
Its not the router since my iPod Touch has better reception
This notebook is so pretty and fast but I cant live without a good internet connection
Oh and the speakers are just not good enough... the sound is very clear but I need something a LOT LOUDER!

I know I can get a Wifi external antenna and a set of speakers but I paid too much for this (1,613 including tax and service plan)

I dont know I love this thing but I think a made the wrong choice
I need an Entertainment Powerhouse... Im not really a gamer

I bought the G51 recently as well and have experienced the same wireless issue! I even swapped the internal Intel 5100 with a 5300 and it's stilll drops wireless connection.

I've checked the adapter setting and have to following set:
    802.11 channel width: auto
    Roaming Aggressiveness: low
    Throughput Enhancement: enabled
    transmit power: highest
allow the computer to turn off this device to save power: unchecked

I am suspecting a power profile issue. I am planning to install Win 7 and see if it behaves the same way.

P.S. I have the lastest intel 5100/5300 driver installed

I did uncheck that option "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

Internet is working fine for normal browsing. But when I stream HD video or (use skype with warcraft 3 running), then it starts dropping my connection.

On my router, the DIR-655, I get signal of 50-60% with connection speed between 80-150Mbps. On my Thinkpad T500 that I used to own, I get 70-80% with speed between 180-300Mbps around the same area.

    This is really frustrating.

And yes even downclocked the 260 card would crush a HD 4650

Does the retail version have 8 seconds bootup option like the G50Vt ?
Also, does it come with the 3D gaming screen as mentioned in Asus's computex article ?

Need a hacked BIOS to up the vcore and vdimm. So it looks like im stuck here. Wish i could see 2.6ghz stable. I can benchmark at 2.6 but like i said it'll crash when gaming so not truly stable.

Processor speed differences really don't matter; most core 2 duo CPUs can handle modern tasks just fine.

The graphics card is basically what G51 has over G50, and it's no small deal. The G51 graphics card performs quite a chunk better than the old one, and the card itself costs a lot more than the old one.

Btw, video memory is perhaps the worst spec to use when comparing GPUs.

That said, the current batch of G51s seem to be having heat issues, so your best bet is to wait a while and get the G51 when the issues have been sorted out.

I have the same problem with my G50VT-A1, I alwasy thought it was my router dropping the connection, but I guess not eh.

Hopefully the people who are putting it together at wherever he got it put the paste on correctly, which is the biggest way to address the heat issues.

There might be a BIOS fix, but as of right now getting AS5 slapped onto it is the best bet.

There is something that's supposed to better than AS5. Can't remember what Ken @ GenTechPC said that it was (Diamond something....). He said that's what they will be using on mine. In any case it will be applied properly on both the CPU and GPU by GenTech.

I got an E-mail from a retailer after asking about the heat and temp issues.

He told me this after talking to ASUS Headquarters.
This is the retail version were talking about.
Sorry for the late response, was at the airport.
And NO I am not going to post the whole E-Mail he sent me, but that's what was written back to me word for word.

ok sorry to doubt, thanks for the news. the retail version = not best buy though?? i dont see how they could release a BIOS to fix temps in a retail version and just forget /leave out the best buy version, as a high percentage of their users will be using that/ this laptop.

    hmm

What retailer? GenTechPC, XoticPC (name any of the others) are not really online retailers, they are resellers. Bestbuy however is a retailer, brick and morter and online and then Newegg is a Retailer though they sometimes carry reseller models theyre usually exclusive or semi exclusive like best buy.

I wouldn't call the best buy model, not retail. Nor would I call a reseller ensemble notebook a retail model. Im getting all technical but you can obviously already see one persons immediate confusion at the use of the word retail model.

I stopped trying to use my wifi card for internet signals. It and the usb adapter types always dropped the signal or slowed to a crawl. I've been using a Belkin powerline adapter I bought from BB and its wonderful. Just plug one unit into the router the 2nd unit into any outlet, plug in ethernet cable and you dont have to worry about dropped signals ever again. Unless you have a daughter that unplugs the surge protector that has the modem and router on it. The multihub ones are good for plugging in things like tivo, 360's or PS3 without having to run cat5 cables all over the house.

Next time I will make it clear by calling each one by specific model designation
    G51Vx-RX05 = BB version
    G51Vx-A1 = RESLLER/Retail version
Sorry for all the confusion if I wasn't making myself clear.

How bout you stop talking out of your backside regarding mythical bios updates of questionable necessity, whereby you claim to have information from an online reseller (who wasn't promising you the moon), yet are unwilling to post the email, provide a link, or identify the source?

How difficult is it to predict a new computer will, at some point, receive a bios update?

Yeah, I saw the Asus page. It also appeared as if the FB poster may have been lumping the G51in with the G71 unintentionally as the next status update made no mention of the 51...

The only thing that bios update DIDN'T do, according to him, was lower the price.
