What do you mean? The G51 has just been released. Judging by how long the G50 line was sold, the G51 and G71 should be in Best Buy for at least until next year

    @xcskiier23

the laptop comes with 2 recovery modes, you can use the F9 key when you boot and you will install vista, however, it will install all the same programs as when you get it, the restore discs are the exact same thing as the recovery partition, I really don't know why they did that. I found a way to make it relly a clean install with the recovery discs but Abula asked me the same question in a PM so I will post what I did in a new post, hope this doesn't bother any one since it is long.

    @xcskiier23
Ok man here is what I did:

To be honest I did the reformatting 3 times.

The thing is that with the computer you get some discs, you get a pair of gold cd with a label that says vista recovery media, and a G60 driver and utility. Messing around with my computer as I usually do I was trying to get into the BIOS to see if I could turn off the sound that the computer makes at start , and I selected F9 at boot and a screen came out that said recovery partition.

To me that was strange since Asus gives recovery dvd and also something installed in the computer. It didn't make sense.

So I started Gparted Live Cd which is a partiton editor and I discovered an 11+ GB hidden partition. So I didn't want to loose that partition because I didn't know if the pair of discs actually used that partition, or if the disc actually was vista. SO i booted form the discs and went ahead installing. The partition and the discs are the exact same thing. However this is not a typical vista install, you will get 3 options to partition the hard drive, but they are already established. I selected Recover windows to entire HD, it takes like 10 minutes, and after that it prompts you for a driver cd, I thought they were asking for the second gold disc, and no they are asking for the G60 driver disk the blue one. I don't know what is does but it took like 3 hours just in the drivers, actually you have to do nothing, it automatically installs everything. At the end you get the exact same programs and bloatware that the computer comes with.

I didn't like that so I went ahead and installed again the difference is that when the installer asked me to put the drivers CD, I turned off the computer by pressing the power button. And started windows and voila a clean install, nothing installed just vista. I inserted the g60 drivers cd and you can chose what drivers to install and which programs to install.
Me for example I only installed the power4gear and that's it, as well as the drivers.

But I now wanted to get rid of that partition that I didn't use, so I started the Gparted live cd and deleted it, the thing was that when resizing the windows partition something happened and important vista files were deleted so I couldn't boot, so now comes the third reformatting.

My school gives us full licenses for free of windows products so I went ahead and grab the vista 64. This time i made it normal like with any other computer, installed the drivers again, and now i don't have that 11 gb partition which actually has the express gate. If I try to turn on the express gate with the button on a side from the power one, it boots windows. So i have 2 power buttons.

Regarding drivers, what I did was install every driver in the disc and latter update. So far My computer works better, and its a little bit faster.

Hope this helps, and if you have any other question please feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer.

Awesome, thanks for the tips! I did the recovery thing and entered the driver cd when it asked. And yet I still needed to install a lot of them when I got into windows. I am only going to install necessary ones like you.

After a very harrowing (and unsucessful) attempt to install a QX9300 processor, I'm wondering about the heating solutions for this machine. A another weird question.

The CPU uses standard paste (which I cleaned off to replace with AS5), but the graphics card (That is the graphics card, the one sharing the heatpipe, right?) has this weird purple foam looking pad thingy. What exactly is it? Is it worth my while to, I don't know, replace it with something?

And my weird question involves the warranty seal. It's on top of one of the screws that anchors the heatpipe to the processor. Is that the seal? Because if it is, it looks the exact same after I closed the computer as when I opened it up for the first time.

Well I hope so! Otherwise I'm going to have to physically break them.

I'm going to a design school where 98% of the students use Macs. I know the PC is the smarter option for me (since I will be using it as a desktop replacement for freelance work as well), but to have a PC with juvenile flashing lights just won't work in that environment!

    I have both a G50vt-X6 and a G51rx-RX05.

The G50 blinks and does all kinds of funky stuff unless you tell it to do otherwise in Direct Console.

    The G51 does not blink.

    Hey guys/gals,

So I put DOX's 185.85 drivers into my G51, and the physics drivers. Then I installed Riva Tuner, and rebooted. It would not allow me to overclock to graphics card. Help!!!

    1. Open RivaTuner
    2. Go to the Power Use tab
2a. Do not be afraid of the warning
    3. Go to Rivatuner/Settings (expand it)
    4. Scroll down to "Force Driver Version" and put in the value 18585
    5. Look down near the bottom of the RivaTuner Window and find the button that says "Hexidecimal Display"
    6. Click it off.
    7. Restart RivaTuner.

I'm going to pose the question again to those who've poked around the G51's innards. Is that purple foam pad mounted over the GPU a good thing?

Actually, this doesn't work since RivaTuner still doesn't support Dox 185.85.

I tried it the other day, and although it would come up with the overclock menu, the clocks that it detected was wrong so I promptly uninstalled RivaTuner and waited for the next update.

@Forge, did you manage to overclock with RivaTuner using Dox 185.85? I know you managed to do so with like 185.68 but how bout 185.85?

I noticed that too TevashSzat. It had a lower stock clock than what was normal, so I closed out of the program. I am going to install another driver and see if I can get Riva Tuner to recognize my Forceware.

Any other driver will probably work, heck even the stock 185.85 will work from what I have researched, just not Dox 185.85......I'd switch to like 185.68 or something like that, but I'm too lazy to uninstall the drivers get 185.68, overclock it and then uninstall, install 185.85 when there is an update and do the overclocking thing all over again...

First as it was stated before I do not believe there is a way to turn off the side lights, but rest assured they do not blink. Also they are not as "gamer" as the other models as the accent lights on the G51 BB model are white which blends nicely with the white exterior lid color. Its not a case of some flashy red or blue lights contrasting against a different color exterior screaming "look at me".

If any design feature might be considered kiddie it would be the Robotic Graphic on the lid but again they are done in a somewhat tastefull manner; and a lot of the more 'standardized' laptops are now appearing with some type of graphic so its no longer considered "gamer only" to have them on your laptop.

That would be a thermal pad. Some people have replaced theirs with sheets of copper and thermal paste to very positive results. However, if you've never done it, I don't know that you'd want to be the first one to try it on this laptop.

Here's a thread about it being done on the 8400M

    1280x720 - 10971
    1280x1024 - 10562

    Using my external monitor.

Again this is with Dox 185.85, CPU at 2.503 GHz, and GPU at 575,980,1450.

Getting together a bunch of Benches and pics for a review soon. oddly my NZXT cryo 's' cooler is not helping the temps that much....sigh

Indeed I have. Go to power users, expand Rivatuner/Sytems. make the value in ForceDriverVersion to 18585, and make sure hex display (button on the bottom of RivaTuner) is disable.

Restart Rivatuner and boom, there you go.

so i was just checking out the bb website fo this system.

I like the case of the bb g51 better than the other black/blue case.

I noticed that bb is now selling an alienware with dual gtx260ms for the same price range... would be nice if the g51 had these.

Not only does it come with dual gtx260m, but it's quipped with DDR3 RAM... personally it's a little disappointing on the g51's side to be equipped with DDR2. I must admit I am not pro about this, but how much difference does it make? I am buying the A1 version as soon as it comes out here in canada (expecting it in the next few days hopefully, as i've been waiting for this PC for a couple of months now :( ) and I want to make the best purchase possible for longevity...I was thinkng about upgrading CPU in 2 years or so when prices drop and warranty is terminated, but is DDR2 RAM going to be a chain as for long term lasting?

DDR3 is really not a big deal at all. Very pointless at this point I think. I rather would have 4GB of DDR2 than 2-3GB of DDR3.
