Oooh, I dunno how it would work internationally...you may be out of luck, dude...Usually you would just go in store to customer service, but it may be worth it to call them over the phone...

But, the website is still saying 1049.99, so my boss may have been wrong about that. I wont be back into the store until tuesday, so I wont be able to check the weekly catalog to confirm...so for now it looks like it may still be 1049.99... :(

Your boss was both right and wrong.

I received a pamphlet advertise it being $999.99 BUT ONLY if you are premier and above reward zone member. I got mine at 999.99 2 days ago because of the said membership. Otherwise, price is 1049.99

PS: the pamphlet advertise it to be 999.99 for premier silver member, the price is good Aug 1 to Aug 8. If you can find someone w/the membership to buy for u :p

I am really interested in getting a G51(don't really know what version yet). I have one main question at this point that is pretty specific.

I have a fall 2007 15 inch MacBook Pro that has a 8600m gt. I play WoW and pretty much nothing else(at this point). I know that the G51 in pretty much any flavor is overkill for this game. The main problem with the MBP is how freakin hot the bottom of it gets when playing WoW. As I am sure you all know the MBP is made of aluminum so its going to get hotter then lets say plastic. I am lazy and 99% of the time play on my couch. Right now I use a couch pillow underneath the laptop so I don't burn my legs off.

So I guess my main question really is, how hot does the underside of the G51 get. Granted it isn't going to tax the system, but I can play for long periods of time and was just wondering if anyone had any input on this.

    Thanks

The output vent of the Asus shoots out the left. It does get a bit warm on the underside near the video card.

This, despite not being such good news, somehow warms my heart :D ... I would have been dejected, having missed such an opportunity for ordering at the wrong time, while I was waiting forever and let the price go up,because I was hesitating, and then being too hasty when I souldn't... Anyway thanks for the info Moo and Howard.

Since I ordered the notebook from Xotic and paid extra for AS5 on cpu and gpu.
Does that void the warranty from asus (2yr, 1yr ADH)

nvm, called them and they told me since they were authorized reseller/optimizer/upgrader. it does not void anything

I've just got myself an Asus G51 but it will only arrive on Friday. I'm just wondering if it comes with all the drivers in a CD, in a folder or do I have to download it myself from Asus? Reason for asking is that I like to format every new computer that I have and know what is suppose to be running or not.

Another thing I would like to ask, has anyone installed Windows 7 on it? If so, how is the driver support and the performance like?

I can't wait until my new notebook arrives :D !

Yeah, I've been reading about it, and apparently its just a fatal bug that occurs when you set a password for the bios and then change it...which is something I'm not ever going to need to do considering its just a personal use laptop, so I'm not worried about it.

Plus its supposed to take a couple weeks to even get shipped out, so I think Amazon already recalled theirs to Intel to get a firmware update, so I wont get it until mid-late August, but I'm not worries about that.

I'm very interested in picking up some variant of the G51-- what I'd like to know is, are there any plans out there from ASUS to offer one that's configured like the Best Buy version (1366x768 display, 4 GB RAM, 2.0 GHz C2Duo, 320 GB 7200RPM HD) but with a faster processor (like maybe a 2.5 GHz)? There seems to be a bit of a mismatch there between the graphical power and the CPU, currently.

I know that newegg has started to sell something like this for 300 bucks more (although it's currently sold out), except it also has a 1920x1080 native res screen, which on a 15.6 in monitor sounds like it would make everything way too tiny. That's why I ask my question above.

With a bit of overclocking with SetFSB, the P7350 does pretty well.

Should you still desire a better CPU, you can upgrade it yourself relatively easily but know that it will void the warranty.

Just went to return my second G51 at bestuy due to idling temperature at 85C and wireless started to drop off again. I had to change the channel often to keep it from being dropped. At the counter, BB supervisor advised me they are getting a good amount of returns for asus laptops, including but not limited to G51's due to minor defects. He even mentioned it was higher rate than Dell and other brand's return rate. Will stay low for a while and see.

Capi, it depends on what you are going to do with the laptop. Most games will run better with the T9600 because it uses a higher clock, but the Quad will work better with applications that can use all 4 cores. I have a T9800 in mine, which is similar to a T9600 and I really like the processor.

DOX's optimized 185.85 drivers are undoubtedly the best drivers out there for gaming right now. If you're brave, you can also get RivaTuner to allow you to overclock them.

If you look at my guide in the sig, there is a short guide in there on upgrading to Dox 185.85 drivers.

Dox 185.85 will not work with RivaTuner. It will work with stock 185.85 with a few modifications though

Having trouble reading the temps with hw monitor in game. If i leave hw monitor turned on while playing a game and then minimize the game and look at the temps, i get gpu temps around the 90's when playing sims 3. If i start the game with hw monitor turned off but then minimize the game while playing and start up hw monitor i get gpu temps around the low 80's. Which temp is the right one?

The temps will drop drastically as soon as you minimize the game so neither may be very accurate.

The best way to check temps (not just max temps) during gaming is the get GPU-Z and then log the temps. While you're gaming, it will record the GPU temp at 1 second intervals.

Well, RivaTuner has a clock readout, and while it said I was overclocked, I was not getting any noticeable increase in performance, whereas I got definite increase using nTools.

Ahhh, then that is my bad. With an 8600M GT myself, an overclock is the difference between Mass Effect running smoothly and it stuttering like hell. And it still stuttered like hell. That explains it. :)

Kierkes, what version of Dox were you using when attempting a RivaTuner overclock?

Personally, I'd rather use RivaTuner, but the RivaTuner version out right now doesn't support 185.85. Well, 185.85 Dox, at least. The last Dox is supported was 185.68, which was very, very close to 185.85.

RivaTuner, I think, has a simpler interface, and is probably less of a resource-eater. For example, I can start up RivaTuner in a second, whereas turning on nTools takes two or more seconds.

By no means though is nTools bad. It's very powerful, what with the customizable profiles, and load/unload rules.

Once a stable RivaTuner that supports Dox 185.85 comes out, I'm going to definitely use that.

Hmm.....then it might have to do with your graphics card since RivaTuner has alot of trouble with the newest ones from what I remember but its fine with older generations like the Geforce 8 series

Did anyone use this thermal compund on their G51 - Coollaboratory Liquid Pro?

I read that you cannot apply it to aluminum heatsinks and that it is a liquid metal, so i dunno if it would be safe when carrying the laptop, that it would spill onto the hardware and case damage (it conducts electricity).

Or do you think it is better to use the IC Diamond 7?

I'm not so sure about that.

Kierke said he needed overclock to run it smoothly, i.e. the GPU wasn't powerful enough at stock clocks. So, when he tried to overclock in RivaTuner, it looked like it should run fine (i.e. with an overclock) but MAss Effect really didn't, because the overclock didn't stick.

Concerning the liquid pro, it's gallium with I guess something mixed in. Gallium is... I don't know. It likes to bond with other metals. I've heard good things about ICD7, but it's hard to work with and I have no idea what the removal steps are.

AS5 is a good all-around paste. It has good cooling, it's easy to apply and remove, and it has lots of support, both officially and unofficially.

I've just received my new Asus G51! I'm quite chuffed with it though I was surprised to find it came with Windows Vista 32-bit instead of 64. I'm going to format it with Windows 7 but I do have a couple of questions.

    1. Is there a recovery partition on this notebook and should I delete it? I have no problems with formatting and all so I think it's shouldn't be a problem unless there are some important applications that are not available on the utility disk. I would prefer to delete it as I like to use up all available space for my work which is Multimedia Production.
    2. There is also a utility, ExpressGate that boots up in 8 seconds or so, does it have its own special partition? If so I won't delete unless it's somewhere else, correct me if I'm wrong.
    3. There should be no problem with driver support in Windows 7, unless there are certain problems othe users have encountered? I have no problems with Windows 7 on my HP Pavilion dv5000t so I presume there shouldn't be one with my new notebook.

I've already installed Left 4 Dead and Crysis and it runs very smoothly. Can't wait to install more of my games on this :D !

That is quite the anomaly that it came with 32 bit.

So this is a bit off subject, but I am thinking of getting this screen and seeing if it works in the G51. It is made for the G50, but isn't that the same form factor the G51 is?

I have to email them about the price, but if it is good enough I will give it a try. I have a unquenchable thirst to mod my G51 lol :D

I found a few sites when I had my G50 but in fact, when I called them...they said that the screen did not exist...We all need to chip in and find a screen thats at least 1680x1050 because this 1366x768 screen just doesnt cut it especially with a 260m waiting to be unleashed.

there is no overclock button on the G51, that was specific to the G50 series notebooks. You can OC through use of the software provided by ASUS or by use of the program SetFSB, which is what I use.

Hey guys, just droppin by to see if there has been an actual fix yet to the gpu overheating problem in the g51, like something that could drop the temps by at least 10-15 degrees or better?

There is no overheating problem with the G51. It is designed that way and the temps that we have been getting, although warmer than other laptops, are very normal.

Really, well ~90c seems pretty high even though everyone here seems to be getting temps around there when playing crysis, im just worried in the long run that my GPU might go dead or something cuz of the heat. Would buying a cooler and dropping the temps by at least 6 degrees prevent that? Ive got eyes on this cooler if so:

A cooler would definately help but a significant temperature drop, which 6C would be, can never be fully guaranteed.

Always buy a cooler for a desktop replacement. You might not need it, but a cooler will always help.
