    I finally got my g51 from best buy and I got a score of 8675 on 3dmark06 stock and got 10146 over clock P7350 @ 2.3 GHz and 576/925/1441 driver 186.31 (1280x720).

    resolution: 1366x768 score 8660. overclock 9985
    highest temp: stock 92c oc 97c (no aircondition and no notebook cooler)

    I did not change any of the voltage settings. (Thanks to the Optimization Guide by TevashSzat). Is this the normal score you get for this machine? I haven't played crysis or any gpu intensive games yet only some aftereffects and photoshop and its great in rendering videos.

    @webmx04

    Those scores are what you would expect at those settings. Temps would be fine too if you have a high ambient temperature, which I suspect you do.

    They are clearly there.

    Go to http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers

    Go to the driver version that you want

    Choose whatever OS you have

    Click on "Click here to download driver and INF files"

    Click on "Click here to download the modified INF file"

    That wasn't so hard was it?

    Just did the RE5 benchmark all as high as can get and runs at an average of 39 fps. Real nice!

    Also just played a little of Mirror's Edge, all maxed out, even AA, and it runs great, 30-40 fps.

    All of this without OC, only with Extreme Turbo High Performance mode.

    Max temp on both, 88C (GPU). Im using a cooler.

    I was going to buy a g50 x5 but I've just stumbled across this g51, it looks awesome. Its about 200 bucks more but it looks worth it.

    I tried to buy it off of Best Buy but they don't ship to the UK! Really gutted. I can't seem to find any similar to the Best Buy model on European sites.

    Yeh might be the only option, the newegg one looks awesome too but they only ship to the US as well.

    All of the stores selling the g50vt x5/x1 ship to Europe, my buddy got one last week, the gtx 260 is a big draw for me though so I might wait for a few months at least.

    I don't suppose the G51 has a waterproof keyboard like the G50? Other than the Geforce GTX 260M and a backlit keyboard what benefits does the G51 have over the G50Vt? Cause at the moment it seems like the G51 is missing some of the features of the older G50Vt such as the OLED, overclock function and Lightscribe for the optical drive. Too bad BestBuy is out of the G71Gx, cause it's not going to be much of an upgrade going from a G50Vt to the BB G51.

    The G50s had waterproof keyboards? News to me.

    Other than the videocard, keyboard and general aesthetics, they're pretty much the same laptop.

    That's beside the point wise guy. I clean my keyboard regularly, maybe not with pouring water, but a slightly wet fabric so just knowing the keyboard is somewhat waterproof is a lot more comforting especially if you're an Architect moving from one place to another. I must admit though that the keyboard on the G51 looks pretty damn hot.

    Questions.
    Why would I want to get the quad core 2Ghz for the laptop and not just get the dual core at 2.6+? Wouldn't most software/games run faster with the quad core?

    I thuoght I read somewhere its the same case as the 17in? If that's true, why wouldn't I opt for the 17in unit being that the size of the lapop is the same?

    At the moment most games don't benefit from Quads, but in other applications like AutoCAD or 3ds Max you'll notice a great performance increase with a Quad over a Duo. You can always overclock the 2Ghz Quad, but again it all depends on your use, cause at the moment you'll do more in games with a 2.6Ghz Dual Core over a 2Ghz Quad. Yes, the G50/G51 series actually have the dimensions of a 17inch notebook while having 15.4/15.6 inch screens. My G50Vt is pretty much the same size (less thick) as my old 17.2 inch Dell Inspirion 9300. The laptop itself though doesn't weight that much and is actually ligther than my 15.4 inch ASUS notebook so around the same would apply to the G51 series.

    Thanks. So it's a cost thing? Same case as the 17in Asus, same specs except for the screen? Sounds like it's better to opt for the 17in if you can spend a bit more. I was hoping the case was smaller.

    Another question. I forgot which laptop O had, but unless you had it plugged in, the laptop never ran at full speed. This laptop doesn't do that to you does it?

    Yea, it's pretty much the size of a 17 inch notebook, but minus the weight. As for the performance under battery that can be managed through Power 4 gear or through Windows power options. In other words you can run at high performance while on battery.

    yeah, but keep in mind that your battery will die a lot faster. it seems like asus assumed if you were going to be gaming on this machine, you wouldn't be more than 6 feet from an outlet

    You can't expect much from a gaming laptop...I don't think there is any gaming laptop that could possibly run a game as ideally as the G51 and last more than 1 hour on battery. Especially with a P series processor, and a GTX 260 that gets up to 90 degrees Celsius on regular games, performance was a priority over power conservation...

    I love the laptop however asus has issues with there paint or quality control. This is my second g series asus. Both have had flaws in the paint on the outer case. I guess as long as the laptop works like it should I will live with it. My last one I actually color sanded it and buffed it lol. I worked. This one has dirt in the clearcoat on the case. I dont want to send it back because who knows what I would get in exchang.

    I will upload the modded .inf file for you via rapidshare.

    Hmm.....actually that has been the first paint issue that I have heard of

    OK, I'm posting it here as it pertains to the G51, but as the only constant I can run on my notebook and the G51 is 3dmark06, I score 4153 on default ORB setting. From what I see here, the G51 should hit between 8k-10k depending what CPU (GPU is the 260M) you have. I have the T7700 2.4Ghz and the 8600GT. Is it worth jumping to the G51 if I want the 1900x1080 screen and run my games at that resolution? 1680x1050 is what I run my games at and it's showing its age.
    I like it how now I can get it with Blu-ray player... Hey, would I be able to watch a 2+ hour blu-ray movie on battery? I know gaming is ~1hr, but is movies any better?

    If you want to play at 1080 native with a GPU that'll run anything, then yes, it's worth the upgrade. Your laptop is going to start showing its age even more next year; at least with the 260GTX you'll be fine for the next few; and when the GTX260M starts to show its age you can overclock it, ha ha.

    Blu-Ray is always nice, but do you need the optical drive itself, or can you save yourself some money and just download the movies you want? I don't have a Blu-Ray player in my G51, but I can download a 1080p Blu-Ray rip and it'll look just as good.

    Is the g51 built on the same chasis as the g50? Is the top case the same as the g50s that had the same paint? I want to order the replacement part of the outer case, however Asus only sells the g50 outer case. Is it the same? I am talking about the painted top cover.

    It isn't the same size as an Asus 17in, its smaller. Its similar to other brand 17in thou. My last laptop, a HP Pavillion DV9720 (17in) was way bigger, but thiner.

    @starstreak

    I would think 2 hours blu-ray playback would be possible.

    It would certainly be a big upgrade for you but if your old laptop doesn't run that badly, it might be better to wait one more year....Its really up to you

    It's all good.

    I've never needed coffee, though.

    Anyway, it's kind of funny, but I almost never use my X9100 processor at full voltages, and hardly even at full multiplier/clocks.

    Played a Left 4 Dead campaign at native res, all high visuals, 4x AA. CPU at 10.5x, 1.163v, 2.79 GHz.

    Maxed out at 87C, but EVGA monitoring had me averaging, anywhere from 82-84 even during high action. I really should have just gone for the P9700.

    g71= 8.5 lbs 16" *11.6"*1.8"
    g51= 6.5lbs 14.6"*10.3"*1.3"-1.6"

    You're right. I was on another site which listed both with the same specs. And when I thought I read here that the keyboard was the same size but the screen was just smaller in the frame on the 15in, I couldn't figure out why anybody would get the 15in in a 17in laptop case.

    14inches I can fit in my laptop bag. :)

    Since most of you bought the G51 (lets say not the one from BB), what made you buy this vs the Sager 8662? They are both around the same price.
