Nope. There's only foam. The foam does a good job, though, since I've had my WD running it in for a month already, and there's been no issues.

The only reason why I want the bracket is so I can slap a sheet of copper on top of it to keep my HDD even cooler.

    What?

By the way, since you're here, is there any specific grade or gauge I should use? I still have to test out clearance, though.

The new copper sheet that I'm going to pick up at The Home Depot and cut on Tuesday will be ~2.5mm. Depending on how much clearance you have for your HDD, anything up to 2mm would be good to use.

Usually I use 99.9% C11000 ETP treated copper. It's a real pain the the *ss to cut, but it has very good thermal resistance. It also has very high electrical conductivity, so make sure you line your HDD with EMI shielding, or electrical tape as an alternative, if you're going to be putting the copper on the circuit board.

If I put it on the bracket, I shouldn't be contacting anything sensitive, right? Gah. I have to take a look inside to measure things anyway.

If you're mounting it on the outside of the bracket like mine, then that's fine. You don't have to worry about anything shorting out.

It's fun to dangle them out like that. Hey wait a second...

Soviet, is there a model number or place I can look at a unmodified M570 bracket? I took a closer look at mine, and it ain't flat on the top.

Not only is there the lifting strap--or whatever it's called--there are some places that are sloped. I might have to go for several pieces of copper, not one big sheet.

I'll upload a picture of mine later today. I have it in my camera somewhere but I'm too lazy to extract it and convert it right now.

I'm looking at the bracket in the link you posted earlier. It looks flat to me. Do you have a picture of your bracket or a link to someone elses bracket?

I'll take a picture later today, too.

Looking at the G50 HDD bracket I posted, you only see the "inside" of the bracket, not the top. Don't know. Maybe whatever they slapped in the G51 is different.

Or it's the same shape and it's not completely flat.

Okay, thanks Forge. I just got back from Dublin. The San Mateo was gridlock, man. Once I make myself a drink, I'll put up the picture of my bracket.

Yeah, I see the raised area on the bracket. You can just cut the sheet again into three pieces I guess: one for the upper part, one for the raised part, and one for the lower part.

I thought you were down south more. Huh. And the San Mateo bridge always sucks. At least it's three lanes now.

Okay, looks like multiple plates, then. Should I cover the lifting strap, or work around it?

As long as the copper doesn't touch the exposed circuit board on the HDD, it's fine. The black EMI shielding will prevent that from happening anyway.

    Down south? Dublin is east.

I notice that you still have the lifting tab there, but since it appears to be unmodded I'm assuming it's just an extra you had lying around. Or something.

I'd like to see those numbers when you get that thicker/larger plate installed.

Now seriously, my brick for G1S is 90W and heats like crazy when gaming, especially the summer when room temps are 28-30C, but still, that brick is running for 1.5yrs already (24/7) and seems very solid :)

The EZ Flash utility, from what I hear is much easier and much safer than the update tool.

he means the Asus Live Update program, which idles in the system tray for no apparent reason occasionally hogging gregarious amounts of resources for also, no apparent reason. You're thinking of the Winflash utility that comes with the G51, in which case I agree. But, the Asus Live Update program can be uninstalled.

Hey folks, I just ordered the G51VX-X1A from Newegg today. I had given up for now since it was supposed to out of stock until the 14th but when I saw here it was back in stock I snagged one so thanks for that info. Still haven't gotten the email from Newegg telling me it's back in stock

Questions: Does the G51VX support RAID 0? BestBuy has a WD 320GB drive on sale this week for $99 but they also have a Seagate 500GB on sale for $120. I assume I'd want the 320GB in order to match what comes with the system, or could I use the Seagate 500GB?

Also, how difficult is it to install the 2nd hard drive? I've built most of my own desktop systems but I've only installed memory in laptops. Do I need to buy anything other than the drive? I saw the post on using a bracket and some copper plates but cutting and installing the plates are probably beyond my skill level.

Has anyone seen a downloadable manual for this system? I searched all over the ASUS website and found all the drivers but no manual, just the Express Gate info. I'd like to get a head start while waiting for the system to arrive.

    Thanks!

Yes, it supports raid0. I bought a matching 320GB seagate drive and set up raid0 just fine. Installing the second hard drive is a very easy process. There is actually a few pictures of how to do so I believe, in a thread in this forum entitled "Weird Math" And yes, btw, for raid0 the same drive size and speed are a must.

There is no G51 specific manual. The manual that comes with the machine is some random awful generic Asus manual designed for like half the laptops that they sell.

I assume setting up RAID 0 requires re-installing Vista? It's been a few years since I setup RAID 0 on my desktop but I think I had to do a clean install. Does ASUS give you the CD/DVD's to make a re-install easy? Of course I already found the drivers on the ASUS website so I guess all I'd need is the OS.

EIement, did you find a significant difference in load times with RAID 0?

I paid extra shipping in order to get the system before I leave on my next trip but I'm not going to have much time to mess with it before going out. I hate to spend much time installing software and migrating my settings over if I'm going to have to do a clean install for RAID.

Last question, is turning on RAID in the BIOS all I need to do after installing the 2nd drive or will I need special boot media with RAID drivers? I remember when I setup WinXP on my old desktop I had to insert a floppy disc with the RAID drivers.

    Thanks again for the info.

EDIT: Could I not setup my programs/settings and Ghost the Single drive, then after setting up RAID 0 restore the Ghost Image?

Got my G51 bracket from the eStore. It comes with screws! Time for Home Depot.

EDIT: Forgot to mention: it came with screws to mount the bracket to the laptop, but not the HDD to the bracket. I just borrowed two from my stock bracket.

EDIT2: Neither Home Depot nor Lowe's had more of those screws, though it's not a problem. Surprisingly, there was no copper sheeting or plates to be had.
