to install winxp you must burn your own copy of winxp with the SATA drivers slipstreamed into it using a program such as nlite.

Cool, I'll try that and tell you how it goes. I"m trying to dual boot Windows 7 with Windows XP on a separate partition.

All to avoid the keyboard issue thing....

I'm not sure what a Synpatics driver is, but Fn+F9 should disable the touchpad.

the same can be said for pressing the furthest button to the right at the very top of the keyboard area. (left of caps lock, right of the Expressgate button)

Wait, what? Left of the caplock is the numlock and right of the Expressgate button is the power button. Well, I guess you'd disable the touchpad if you disable the power, so...

Jokes aside, the pressure-button--or whatever's the right name--is the image of the touchpad with a line through it. The first button to the left of the Expressgate button.

Yeah, I don't have the synapatics driver installed. And I don't want to install it.
The FN+F9 doesn't disable it for me since I don't ahve the synapatics drivers installed.

    Yeah...

My speakers have suddenly stopped working! It was working fine a couple of days ago but now there's nothing. The audio comes out through the headphones but there's nothing on the speakers. Is it a driver problem or speaker problem?

There was a problem in the past (Can't find the thread) where something inside of the headphone jack got stuck, could be the same issue here if anyone knows where this topic got buried.

I posted a "what laptop should I buy thread" and was recommended Sager over the G51. The contention was that the G51 has a "rebranded underclocked GPU" and also has heating issues. I thought I'd come to this thread and ask for more details on that. I've tried to dig for this through the 100+ pages of this thread but haven't found anything. I just want to know if the GPU is underclocked and if this machine does have heating issues. Most people seem to be pretty satisfied with the G51. I'd appreciate some feedback on that point. Thanks!

for one, the GPU is underclocked, but all my games (incl. crysis) play just fine at the stock clocks. the "heating issues" just mean the GPU gets hot. you never actually feel it, and we have yet to hear of a fried mobo/gpu or even someone's GPU overheating and auto-downclocking/BSOD. so while it gets hot, from experience and from multiple conversations with asus service reps, it is built to take the heat. The sager does have better cooling, but if your budget is under 1500 FIRM, then you won't get the same performance out of a sager anyways, because you'd be stuck with the stock config (with no OS even). if you have the $ to pay, I would recommend the sager, as you do get what you pay for.

Thanks, EIement. That is about what I suspected. The reason I was stubborn for sticking with the G51 was due to cost. To add the 9600 processor + OS on the Sager brings the price close to $2k. I've got a decision to make but at least now I have the facts. I think maybe a Zalman cooler might be worth it since this laptop will spend 90% of the time on my desk connected to an external LCD monitor.

If you do pick up a G51, I'd definitely recommend the X1A from newegg, instead of the RX05 from bestbuy. The manufacturer warranty which is included with the X1A (and X2A, but the X2A is way too expensive for its only addition, a .3GHz faster CPU) is MUCH better than the one included with the RX05. And yes, I'd definitely look into getting a cooler. Either the XPad or Zalman.

I'd definitely go with Starfox above me and say GentechPC if you're going for the A1. The amount of free support they give here on these forums is far above what I've seen from other resellers, and communication has been top notch outwith the forum as well.

hey watup....well i just saw...you guys get low 50s-mid 50s for idle. im sittin here with like 15 tabs open and a few word docs and the lowest its gone is 60, highest its gone is 68 (in the gpu-z sensor tab, it fluctuates between 200/120 and 400/640...).

even when left for idle 200/120 for like 10mins it doesnt seem to go below 60C. what can be making it go above. if my memory serves me correct, like 2 weeks ago it was going fine with 200/120 @ around 55C. what has happened now?

nope...185.85 still. when i just installed the drivers i was getting like 54-57C idle. now i cant get below 60C. the clocks also fluctuate like dam crazy. how can Firefox trigger higher clocks?

idk let me downclock the gpu temps to 200/120 so it cant go higher than that and see what happens...

There are a lot of JavaScript ads on NBR, SACH7002. They will make your GPU ramp up every now and then. You can remedy this by switching back to the old NBR skin.

I also bought the X1A from Newegg and have been very happy with it. I bought a 2nd 320GB drive for $87 and setup a RAID 0 array. I spent $1387 total for the laptop and 2nd drive. You'll spend $200-$300 more for the next higher up G51 model and all you'll get is the quad-core CPU that has a lower clock speed than the X1A's 2.53ghz.

For those deciding what to buy this info might help make up your mind:

    I ran Passmark Performance test on both my G51VX-X1A (P8700 CPU @ 2.53ghz, 4GB RAM, GF260M, 2x320GB RAID 0)

    and my Dell desktop system:

    Q9300 CPU @ 2.50ghz, 6GB RAM, ATI 4800 series GPU with 512MB, 750GB SATA 2 (not RAID)

The Q9300 smoked the P8700 in CPU scores because the test was using all of the quad-core CPU. The scores were almost exactly double the dual-core CPU on the X1A.

    Graphics:
The NVidia 260M ran circles around my older ATI 4800 in the simple and medium tests but only had a slight advantage in the complex test:

    (Frames per second)
    Graphics 3D - Simple: 1737.2 (G51), 324.2 (Dell)
    Graphics 3D - Medium: 539.1 (G51), 153.7 (Dell)
    Graphics 3D - Complex: 72.5 (G51), 69.9 (Dell)

Memory test were about 10% better on the G51 except for the large RAM test where the Desktop did better.

Hard Drive: Here's where the RAID 0 advantage shows up:

    (MBytes xfer per second)
    Disk - Sequential Read: G51- 151.9, Dell- 89.1
    Disk - Sequential Write: G51- 143.8, Dell- 92.2
    Disk - Random Seek + RW: G51- 6.8, Dell- 2.18

The one real-world test I did was to extract around 850MB of files compressed with WinRar into an ISO image file. Again, the RAID 0 smoked the SATA2: 19 seconds on the G51 vs. 32 seconds on the Dell.

The only game I've had time to install and try is Wolfenstein, it ran very smoothly even during intense battles.

My research on dual vs. quad core CPU's indicates that right now video rendering is about the only thing that benefits from the quad core. Of course this could change in the future. And from reading numerous post here there may be a chance the X1A can be upgraded to a Quad-Core CPU when you need that.

If anyone has some free performance tests they'd like me to run put the download links here. I'm on the road this week so should have some time.

Did you buy a Seagate 320 GB 7200 rpm as your second drive for RAID? I'm thinking of doing that. I've got an external WD 320 gb passport drive that I use right now that I'm very happy with but I wouldn't mind RAID performance.

Yes, BestBuy had the Seagate Momentus 320GB 7200rpm drive on sale last week for $99 then I used a 12% off coupon. That Seagate is the exact drive that comes with the G51. I think the regular price is $120, Newegg has OEM 320GB drives for around $80 but I don't know if they have that particular Seagate. EDIT: They do have that drive, $80+shipping.

I ran the performance benchmarks to decide if I was going to replace my desktop system with the G51. For now the answer is yes. I usually work 3 trips a month and it's a nuisance to have 2 sets of Firefox bookmarks, Roboform login's, and to have to sync My Docs before and after a trip. RAID is not an option on my desktop and I think the performance gain I'm getting from that on the G51 offsets not having a quad core. Nice boost in performance and drive space for $80-$120.

no ads here ofc, ppl with the slightest intellect would use firefox. and using firefox, means using adblock + :D!!!

but its not just NBR, i go on many other websites as well. but the main thing is, even when in 200/120, its not going below 60c anymore....why is this so??

haha o yea CLtpilot NAICE buying ur new laptop. although you are a lil miss-informed.

wow i got to add this to my sig, idk how many times ive told ppl the bargain i got it at. GOT MY A1 at 1245USD...beat that lol. elemental got an even better deal, like 800usd for his X1A used for week. but for Quads, they are much faster in applications and the speed isn't all the determining factors. you have two cores, i have 4 cores...like in a kitchen, will two chefs be > 4 chefs working at teh same time splitting the dish into 4 parts? ofc it also depends if the "dish" has the built-in code to be able to be splittable between 4 chefs, but yea you get the point.

EDIT- lol nvm i see u know c2q vs c2d, lol sorry but yea the the Q9000 OCs to 2.45GHz at stable stock volts, and thats plentiful for most applications. you wont see any difference between a C2D @ 2.53 (or 2.9GHz when OCed for that matter) vs a C2Q @ 2.45GHz unless its 4-core capable where the c2q SMOKES the C2D. but if i couldnt of gotten the A1 for this deal, then i prolly wouldve also gotten teh X1A.

have fun with yo laptop, join g-series owners club on steam and play tf2 sometime.

yep at 200/120 i get over 60, usually 61-64 and when it goes to full 3D at 550/920/1375 which i keep when not playin games, then it goes to around 73 tops while NOT PLAYING ANY GAMES.

things ive installed vary. a few games from steam, microsoft enterprise 2007, you know the usual. idk wth could cause it to suddenly go from previous 55idle to 60 idle. thats 5C increase with no warranting reason :(

sidenote: im idling with no desktop and have 68 processes running. how many do you guys have? i looked over it and most are windows apps and asus things like splendid or hotkey things etc.

I have no idea why your temperatures would go crazy like that. Are you crosschecking HWM with GPU-Z and maybe Speedfan and Everest?

Yes it has the 2 year global warranty plus a 1 year accidental damage warranty IF you send the card in within 60 days of purchase.

wait what? you also get 70C, what is your idle temps tho?

ive crosschecked with GPU-z obviously with both having same temps although you could say that GPU-z lags as in it reports 64C when hwmonitor reported that 5 secs ago and it now 63C...

really, any ideas how to make it run like a normal g51 @54 idle?

ok ima post a screenshot l8r and maybe you guys could go over the processes and see anything that is unnecessary. i have a lot of em that idk why are open...
