So it would more likley be G50VX-A1 etc. -
My bad on the Newegg/G50 thing. I just suck at searching, lol....

P.S. I don't want to upgrade my desktop because I want to buy this, but that GTX 285 looks more promising every day! -
A few pics I found googling: one press pic and 2 photos from Computex. Seems some models may have side lighting after all? And the material south of the silver detailing looks to either be speaker-grate style or carbon fiber...

Holy grails before virtual reality in my book.
Anyways Sharp built one already (dont think its design was for the market) and other screen manufacturers have shown laptops with their screen working. Acer has one scheduled as well shortly after the G51 is released. By the end of the year itll be common place for people with a little cash to burn.
I just dont really get excited over last years technology coming so late. The way i view things consumer computing is being held back about 20 years by backwards compatibility. TV Technology was literally held back 20 years until today. -
I can never trust acer laptops bro.. they're too disgusting based off of the many repairs needed by our BB geek squad. -

Single Renders in Ray Tracing dont take that long, back in windows 95 using software from Micrografx on a Pentium 1 took a week lol.
I also believe a demonstration of Quake 4 in 720P was rendered using ray tracing was done on some 16 processor contraption at 90 FPS in 2007. A single consumer gpu capable of doing it is a bit far off though.
ACER puts out plenty of crap, point is if theyre doing it who wont lol.
I am not even talking screen technology. Resolution was held back by backwards compatibility and the issue of overhauling the networks, Modern processor technology about 10 years after current HD resolutions were concieved and LCD technology took a good leap and helped but we still took a few years longer then planned. Response time and some others things were never worked on until seriously until recent years until the demand for it arrived. -
well i guess many people are currently afraid to advance because of the recession. Electronics albeit still advancing at a frightening rate has slowed down from 2 years ago.

Yeah well looks like a good jump coming through to the end of next year in computing atleast. Its about time for some things to happen.
Im just bored at this point, dont mind me. I have to go try out one of these chiclet keyboards looking at the pictures of the G51 i still dont like the keys but I have never touched one. Hopefully will be better than the Wireless Chiclet Keyboard on the 1984 IBM PCjr. -
At any point, you should try using a sony/apple notebook keyboard. They really do feel quite good. The keyboard flex is virtually non-existent and the slight seperation between each key makes it feel more like a normal keyboard with slightly less depth for the keystroke.
Edit: i don't think i've actuall ever seen a sony laptop's key being replaced. -

Heh I keep Engadget on like a 5 second refresh i am always disappointed when there not new news each time it shows lol. Exaggerated a bit but I read it everyday and when im not doing something i hit it up to see almost no knew news. I used to try other sites as well but in general no real luck.
As i have said before im skipping the G51 gonna be atleast 2 years and next years budget is for things like a new dSLR, grip, flash and since im switching brands lenses as well. G60 sounds nice so whatever refreshes that model in 2 years or whatever refreshes the G71.
My Previous list (on a budget of course as im not rich) which landed me the G50: 15.6-17 inch with Full Keyboard, Intel CPU, 250 GB or larger hdd, 3+ GB ram, webcam, wireless n, fingerprint or facial recognition, firewire. I did not include things like lightscribe dvd burner as my last laptop had that. Gaming wasnt in the budget but as the budget grew gaming came into play.
My current next list: Next Gen Medium Range Quad Core (Mobile i5 whatever), 16-17 Inch w/ Full KB, 8GB ram, 500+ GB HDD, USB 3.0, Bluray Burner, Affordable High end DX11 GPU. Still working on it. -
Which Dslr are you planning to get? Nikons are nice ;D
Edit: Back on topic slightly. i did not find any news of the g51 today at work for BB. No sku, nothing. -
Hi, I'm new to these forums. I've been following this thread for a while, and am thinking about buying this laptop for Uni in September. Sadly no word on UK release date, so I may have to get it shipped :S
Don't think this picture has been posted yet, not that it shows anything more than the ones on page 6:

Don't know why they needed 2 G51s for the show. They coulda just had one on a turntable and given the other one to me.
-
LOL! good one, im sure you could've punched out the girl and ran away XD
-
-
how'd you figure out that the screen was a 720p? i thought rez was supposed to be 1366x768 and 1920x1080.
And besides that. dyaikdags, maybe one laptop featured a 3d led screen and the other didn't. -
vista taskbar = 36 px.
height in that shot = 87 px.
taskbar in that shot = 4.1 or 4.2px (blurred)
basic ratios say 754px = most likely a 1366x768 res. -
oo i see, thats not good.
-
I'm pretty sure that screen in the picture is a FullHd resolution, it's very similar to my gateway resolution.
-
I can't tell in that last picture, but in the pictures posted on this threads page 31 (post 305), you can see that it is definitely 1080 resolution just by looking at the taskbar and the gadgets on the side...it looks the same as on the Dell SXPS 16 I had for a couple weeks.
Here are the links to those pics:

in that first picture, since its turned and on a bit of an angle, the middle should have a neutral skew.
doesnt take a photoshop master to count ~129px high with a taskbar of ~4 (impossible to be more exact because of the wallpaper choice). 3.1%, = ~1161px high.
looks like there will be a model with either. -
YAY nice stuff RifterAD!! Great find!
-
My guess is a model sold through online retailers with the nice screen (possibly as an option) and the standard Best Buy/big box version with the worse screen.
-
-
I wonder if the BestBuy version has it's own unique look?
Anything is better than the "old" G50-X5 from BB with the lightning bolts! -
The X1 from Best Buy honestly wasn't that bad. It stood out, but I mean, it was just blue with some fancy line patterns on it >.>
Well I suppose that maybe like the G50s there will be one more common look(like the orange one for the G50) and perhaps some custom looks(like the G50s from BB). -
) was much better looking than the X-5(Gold/Brown with lightning bolts
)
If it's the standard looking one we see(White), that's a huge improvement!
No offense meant any X-5 owners -

note: "In all cases, all can make hassle-free Games Far Cry 2 and Crysis 16/9ème in a resolution of 1920 × 1080."
I think this was brought up before, maybe from a different website, but this backs it up even more. -

I've read the whole thread (34 pages for my screen) and have to say only one thing - have to be patient. With Altec sound or without, with 1366x768 res or not this thread is dead for now until someone posts an exact market hitting date of ASUS G51.
-
Aw but it's so fun to speculate
-
1680x1050 is fine for me...
-
-
July is the rough estimate.
-
No one knows anything except July.
-
man i just realized that this 15.6 is going to be pretty darn thick like the sager 8662. >_>
-
G51
14.76 inches x 10.43 Width/Depth
1.35 inches(Front) to 1.59(Back) thick
Weighing in at 7.27 pounds( with 6-cell battery)
Those are the measurements given from info. on that site.
SAGER 8662
14.3 inches x 10.6 Width/Depth
1.45 inches(Front) to 1.95(Back) thick
Weighing in at 7.1 pounds( with 8-cell battery)
Size is almost the same .
The will be pretty much equal in performance based on that you can configure both with the same exact hardware specs( slight edge to ASUS with OC'ing feature).
And yes I know the SAGER 8662 offers a much better screen res. option(1680x1050 or 1920x1200) all I'm saying is that the ASUS should perform better than the SAGER when you game/benchmark in same resolution when using factory OC option found on the ASUS. -
I also think, agree with all IKAS V said, that the price would be the fight field
between Sager and ASUS when it comes up to orderzZzz``
-
yea but then when we think about it, if an 8 cell for the 8662 only last on average about 1:45-2 hours at most per charge, what do i expect to be getting from a g51 with unnecessary LED's (which i will probably turn off) and a backlit keyboard. Like an hour at most?
It also strikes to me as a surprise seeing as how a 6 cell g51 weighs more than an 8 cell sager 8662. I'll just give them the benefit of the doubt and say that asus designed a damn good chassis so added weight onto the g51 xD. -
You know that G50 was and still is bulky. G51 is the same IMO (not checked the dimensions) and as mentioned - 2 hours on battery for that kind of rig would be superb for word processing (1:25 estimated again IMO) , etc. Nothing more, but probably less.
*Yeah, I'm definitely getting used to speculate -
if it has an led screen, that should be more than the difference between the 260m and 9700gt/9800gs. if they put in a calpella/clarksfield platform, then the little power savings that come with it will probably have it last longer than the g50v(t)'s (i get 2:30 +-15 with my g50v).
the power draw from leds should be minimal. from wikipedias LED page; a blue LED (3V) @ standard current (20mA) = 60mW/LED (the laptop isnt a flashlight, so the number will be much smaller).
the new asus g51
