What is perfromance wise 260m GTX compared to a desktop GPU?
NV GF 9800 GT?
-
Something like that
Or GS maybe
-
The Geforce GTX 260M will be pretty much on the same range as a desktop Geforce 9800 GT.
-
9800 GT = 112sp, 600/1500/900 clocks
GTX 260M = 112sp, 5501375/950 clocks
both 256bit bus/GDDR3. they will probably have a similar clock ceiling, so more or less the same could be expected. -
Not to worried about battery life, will be plugged in most of the time especially when gaming.
Don't ASUS laptops come with some sort of power saver mode to use when not gaming, this should give the laptop a little boost to extend battery life.
And the weight between the 2 will be hardly a issue, not really that much of a difference. -
how about the width between the two lappys.
-
@bestbacon
-
This is not good at all
-
Does Asus sell 9- or 12-cell batteries specific to each laptop? Or can I just get an "Asus laptop" battery? Cuz I wanna get a BIT more life out of this thing.
-
I'm not sure about batteries, but you could buy one of those external one's -seen one in BB. But i dunno if they prolong the battery life by a lot...
-
BB has them for $999. The guy my friend and I talked to said they had 79 of them in the warehouse ready to be released. He figured they would be released in a couple of weeks.
-
Are you kidding me?!
999! Wow
Even with a P8400 and low res is a hell of a deal
-
Lol we are talking about the same laptop right?
-
I hope so lol
-
If it's 999$ that'll be the best "bang for the buck" gaming laptop so far
-
If it's really $999 I'm sold. I'll be first in line to grab one.
-
Appealing. But if higher-res models are available I'm after them still =P
For a moment I thought you were talking about a $1000 battery. HOLY HELL haha -
Anyone knows if the $999 version will have DVD multi drive or the Blu ray drive ?
-
Man.. I'm thinking the price would be around $1200-$1500, with all the quadcore and gtx current graphics...
The current g50vt-x5 with the 9800M GS just went down, so this will definitely start high.. -
No one knows, for sure at least, if there is even going to be a $999 version.
-
no new info about release dates from the ASUS facebook page.
You should all join the ASUS facebook page btw. They're giving away free ASUS -
I'll see if I can get a copy of his reciept from BB. He bought a g50vt-x5 a few weeks ago. He heard about the g51, so he went to exchange it and price match it with what they have in the system for $999.
-
Does anybody know if the 260M in this is the 55 or 40nm version?
-
It's DVD multi. Like I said I'll try and get the specs on it. From what I know, It's pretty basic. I believe it's a 2.26 dual processor, 4 gb or ddr2 ram, 260m. I think the resolution is 1366×768 or something close to that.
-
I really hope this does come out in the next couple of weeks. It's been 4 years since I bought my last comp and I've been rather anxious to upgrade. I was actually pretty set on getting the x5 but I'm seeing Best Buy doesn't sell them online anymore nor do any of my local stores have it in stock.
Maybe it's for the best if this g51 is $999 though. Hope that's true considering the only big difference between that model and the x5 would be the gtx 260 (highly doubt that model would include the quad core or blu-ray if it exists). -
It's the GTX 260M, which is a 55nm, 256-bit DDR3 card. The GTS 260M is a 40nm, 128-bit GDDR5 card.
-
any clues as to which lappy's which host the gts 260m then Kev ?
-
kk keep us updated. release must be close
-
Lol, me too.
Do y'all think a UK release date will be publicised once it is released in the US? -
Wait, 128-bit? Does that bandwidth limitation still apply to GDDR5? I remember when I had a 128-bit DDR2 8600m GT with 512MB VRAM everyone was saying that it couldn't really use all 512MB.
-
damn I'm glad I didn't buy the sager yet. This is gonna be a serious bargain!
-
Wow 999 with a GTX 260M... Although I would love that, I can't believe it till I see it. That's just an awesome price lol.
-
GDDR5 is faster than DDR3 so it should not be a problem even if it is 128 bit VRAM.
Saying that the 260M GTX should still be better than the 260M GTS even though the GTS will have some advantages over a GTX(Run cooler and consume less power) -
someone in the k51 thread had a good analogy for it (forgot your name, sorry).
consider it as a bucket brigade, with the bus width = the number of brigade lines, and memory speed = the speed they can pass buckets.
so if you halve the lines but double the speed, you end up with the same thing. -
Wow, Now that the X5 is discontinued through Best Buy and getting hard to find online, Im thinking about this being the one, considering it stays under $1100.. if $999 is true then How can i resist?
Now, i KNOW we dont know anything about the OFFICIAL release date, but can anyone guarantee to me that it will be out by mid-july at the latest?
Cuz then i can force myself to wait.. -
No official release date yet but most resellers I talked to said mid to end of JULY( more likely end)
And about the BB version no clue as to when that's coming out, and the $999 price is just speculation but I really do hope that's true, It would be a hell of a bargain! -
Sure, I'll guarantee it. What the hey.
-
The last part of your post is a myth. The GPU can use all VRAM. However, due to limitations of other parts, it won't because extra VRAM is only most useful at higher resolutions, something which lower end GPUs(those with smaller bus sizes) can't even handle, let alone getting to the part about writing stuff on the VRAM.
As for GDDR5, there was an analogy made a while ago with the highways and the trucks transporting data. Basically, think of it like this:
The bus size is the amount of lanes on a highway.
More lanes = more stuff being transferred
The clocks(and ability to overclock) is the speed of the vehicles
Faster vehicles = more stuff being transferred in a same laps of time
*Note that if pushed past a certain limit, the vehicles would break down so it's the same principle with overclocking
The shaders are the amount of vehicles on the highway
More vehicles = more stuff being transferred
Finally, the memory interface(i.e. GDDR3 vs say GDDR5) is the size/type of the vehicles
Bigger vehicles = more stuff can be transferred
So basically, the more of these components, the better. Usually, most of the components scale with bus size. However, recently manufacturers have been using memory interface as a cheaper method to bus size in terms of performance. At higher resolutions, the smaller bus size will become apparent and bottleneck, but for regular resolutions, the higher memory interface can make up for the smaller bus size.
Hope that makes things a bit clearer

This is probably the best analogy I've seen so far
-
$999 is wishing upon a star, a fantasy which won't come true.
-
thats true kevin, a g50vt-b1 is about 1899.99 on avg here. The g51 at the very cheapest should be about $1200 U.S.

hey thats me....

I find it funny (no offense to you) that people push for a release date like sheep trying to get at the same food. The answer is always the same.
Its kinda like engadget or autoblog asking a company for this or that information, they could actually post that they asked before asking as they already have the last 100,000 official responses that came from the company over the last 15 years.
One guy has a point, the cooling will be interesting, though a larger thermal interface for the gpu core (would have to be a apart of the original cpu design) could make up for the extra heat its putting out by assiting the cooling system with the extra contact. When the first 1Ghz x86 cpu's hit the news we were all afraid wed need refrigerent cooling, so overreaction can be the name of the game as well. -
i knew that i was just playing with those guys to see how many ppl would say something really stupid
-
I would like to see a 4850 version.
And the chiclet kb with backlighting. Then I might upgrade.
Actually, who am I kidding. Upgrading for 20% gains is stupid. I'll wait for the G52 or G61. -
damn you're killing me
-
any preorders for the g51?
-
so does this thing have backlighting?
-
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
Yeah the screens backlit *looks up to post that references if the kb was backlit with a 4850 the person might be interested* -
even i saw that, and i'm too lazy to look for stuff.
the new asus g51
