I actually like the design. It's more subdued and natural looking than the SXPS and previous XPS. Looks more professional.

I would wait until these come out, so we know what prices they're at. The XPS line could be replacing the Studio line for all we know.

What is with that stupid part sticking out in the back? If Apple can make a sleek laptop that isn't so clunky and awkward, I don't see why PC brands seem to have so much trouble doing it...

    Ugh, disappointed.

They should've made it look like this:

    asus nx90 - Google Search

minus the dual touchpad, just include one giant one and make a backlit keyboard. I would upgrade in a second.

Alright. I have been following this 30 so odd pages for the specifications of the new XPS lineup. I have a system (1645 / ref signature) which has already been returned. Was waiting for a replacement when the online order shows up as canceled and the rep calls me up to update about the delay and the new model in works...

It is now > 3 weeks since I had any news about the replacement model.

Now when the XPS 15 / 17 releases, what MIN config should I hope/wait for? My primary aim was a powerful system which can help me with video processing and 3d designing + Moderately high gaming (HL2 / Crisis Etc)

I need your input guys, so that I can make up my mind when I actually get the replacement quote from the DELL rep.

Else, I will be demanding my money and go online for some laptop hunting via friends in US of A...

I just can't believe they went back to using disk trays as opposed to slot loading... All things considered this laptop is starting to look like a step backwards from the SXPS 16.

Oh my god, no way, that's bad.

    BTW, nice Asus design.

Ah, well, it's likely that the current XPS 14/15/17 cannot fit/is not meant to fit the new Sandy bridge/ATI.

The part sticking out is just the screen above the vent so that they don't get the overheating induced throttling and skin burns - but they made up for that by going with Nvidia.

hahaha that is a pretty ugly design IMO...I kinda like the brushed aluminum palmrest though....but the overall look isn't something an XPS should have. It looks more like a business-type laptop IMHO. Now that I see the pics, I come to realize that these XPSs (if the pictures are legitimate) look exactly the same as the dell inspiron 1012 (aka mini 10)
    http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-mini1012/pd?layoutvariation=MasterPageFileVariation2
    LOL LOL LOL

lol@poiuytre: I agree! somehow I like ATI cards better than nvidia....maybe the GeForce 8000s series' defects are still hauting me?

I'm not so sure about the Inspiron thing.

The front bezel, especially near the screen and keyboard, definitely looks like it. And who could disagree it looks like crap. But the front handrest (as it is called, but it's usually like a hand-avoid) looks different. Just think the overall design may have improved function but is somewhat amateurish.

Still no solid specs details but 99% of us are disappointed.

To me, they look like the new Studio line.

The link to that European site with the brushed metal and what I think might be a slot loader looks more like an XPS...

This should give any doubters a firm idea
    Dell XPS 15 Price in India - Dell XPS 15 L501x - 15.6" Laptop

This is clearly an XPS not Inspiron - look at the logo.

Ugh, ports at the back. But side vent! So they could've made the design nicer...

Note that for XPS the GPUs could be GT 420/425/435/445M. It is unusual for Dell to give so much choice in a laptop, but this is spread across 3 models. HOPEFULLY GT 445M available in the 15.6 model - but looks like it won't be atm, seeing as GT 425M was meant to be its base config. Is it ok to get a 17.3 inch bulky thing?

    XPS 14: GT 420 or 425 option
    XPS 15: GT 425 or 435 option
    XPS 17: GT 435 or 445 option

Dell should have realised we would be looking to UPGRADE from HD 5730 not downgrade.

Oh also somebody edited the first original link
    Dell Studio XPS 15 (501-6595) prijzen | Core | Tweakers.net Pricewatch

It's no longer DDR2 - so the info is mostly correct now, missing only USB 3.0

Ok now all three pics look different.
The Norwegian one looks the best.
The Dutch one looks like an existing Studio.
The Indian one looks like the Norwegian one, with subtle differences.

But it clearly has an XPS logo.

Anyone can tell from the photos if it's slot loaded or not?

OMG! I’m really disappointed with the design. So plain and unimaginative :(
    The laptop itself screams INSPIRON!
My nearly 3 years old XPS M1530 looks far better than this.
I wish they used some of old XPS design elements and improved it.

I guess Dell want to save the best things for their Alienware line

I can see “STUDIO”-like logo for the Dutch one and the design a bit different.
    Maybe a new Studio model?

Judging from Norwegian and Indian pics, it looks like we will get disk tray type for the new XPS.
Also interesting that edge to edge LCD is also gone.

its not edited, the "pricawatch" crawls price/specs info from shops 3 times a day.
because there are many diferent shops that may have different specs, info like ddr2/3, wifi n, battery size... is usualy incorrenct, so are the pictures.

Final specs have yet to be announced so would wait and go from there but if any of these specs are what we are getting I would be very disappointed.
The Nvidia 425M will more than likely be overwhelmed by CRYSIS, it's not a gamers GPU that's for sure.
I'm very sad if you can't upgrade to at least a 445M in every new XPS no matter what size you get.
Not impressed at all and I had very high hopes. I would wait for reviews before jumping on to see how this laptop performs.

if that is actually how it looks then i would sell dell stock so fast because it is truly a sign they are on the way out for good. when you make NEW laptops that can't compete with older laptops from the competitors in style and function, you have to suck.

Yeah, and there is a website that shows these that actually say's

"The new Dell Studio XPS 14, XPS 15 and XPS 17 devices are expected to outpace competitors in the market with excellent features".

We will see about that when we see the official specs on oct 21 or 22 so far that doesn't seem the case!

Note: I hope the palm rest is not made from the same material as the E series Latitudes (E5400, E5410, etc). That palm rest attracts finger prints like mad.

Well i hope this is a nightmare and dell will come out with a se xy design when i wake up :( ,but m feared this is reality.I cannot digest the new design. It looks like a 500$ cheapo laptop  .I am really gonna fight with dell to give me a refurb 1645 atleast!I am more satisfied with mob 5730 coupled with a se xy design ;) .I may go for this if it atleast had 445m(the 15" one),but 425m-i will be forever critisizing this design if i get this as a replacement!Damm a studio looks wy better with sexy cylindrical flushed screen.I dont know why didnt dell  keep the cylindrical design if they had to side vent it.All in all this is a TECHNOLOGICAL DISASTER! in my view!

So apparently some cards like the GT 425/435M and possibly the 445M will come with 2GB. But you guys think that this makes no impact on performance right? Will a 2GB GT435M be better than a 1GB HD 5730 in any way?

For overseas (not USA) the starting price should be USD 1250 for XPS 14 and USD 1350 for XPS 15. Usually these prices are quite accurate - but you lucky people in America will have it cheaper for sure. Those are starting specs only. My dream config of GT 445M + i5-580M or better will cost way more.

This is what dell gives me after waiting so long!I am thinking of asking dell to gimme a refurb 1645 instead,i dont give a damn about usb 3 and m pretty sure that 5730 will surpass gt435m(if this is what high end is)

    Ditto!

Well, I’m kinda angry because it took a long time for Dell to design the replacement for SXPS 16

For new models cycle, Dell should already launch this thing last January/February.
And for 2011, we should get completely new model for this thing replacement.

Now are stuck with this thing at least until the end of 2011 *facepalm*

Now, I'll wait for the new 2011 Alienware m15x before deciding to buy a new powerful sandy bridge laptop.

It's clear that Dell is not going to let the XPS line compete with Alienware. If they put a decent display in it, the 14 and 15 will sell okay. Dell will discount the crap of these machines and you will be able to get dedicated GPU in a 14 or 15" display for under $1k. There is nothing really interesting here.

well what would you think will have higher resale value.A 1645 or xps 15.
I see only usb 3 a plus over 1645."See" i already decided to sell this s_hit and buy a crazy sb laptop. If you think 1645 can get higher resale value-i will prolly fight for 1645 instead let alone a refurb one!If this is what dell offers customers, then its really going down the lane.BTW m sorry for posting many posts at a time, but this design really got me frustrating! Please forgive me!and please screw dell!

If this design and the specs are legit how do they expect to compete. I have to take another look at the ENVY 17 especially the updated one even though I don't care about the 3D and I am not a fan of the chicklet keyboard.

dude i think you never used a xps laptop.Use it once and come back here and compare it to the new design, you will know exactly what m speaking.Elso just read a review of 1645 or 1530 and compare it to the new system, you will speak my words.BTW dell isn't doing me a favour by giving me a replacement ,they are doing it bcoz they sold me a product that overheats badly and i cud sue them if they didnt take any action.
BTW could you please comment on the new design instead of asking me about my experience and deciding what i deserve/not

they showed so much promise with the adamo design. it was a very impractical computer for the time, but it was very well designed and beautiful to look at. they completely deserted it rather than taking the best of it and putting it toward new designs. an adamo-esque XPS that wasn't as concerned with being crazy thin but maintained that design would be great.
