if you order your 1730 with 4 gigs of ram it will only reflect this in the 64 bit version of windows. dell only puts the 32 bit version on their systems and that will only show and use 3 gigs of ram max. basically if you do not upgrade to the 64 bit version of windows and ordered 4 gigs of ram you are paying for a useless upgrade at your time of order. the problem with the 64 bit version of windows is that you would than have to redownload every single 64 bit version of the driver thats on the system

hmmm.....64 bit windows vista will allow you to utilize all 4 gb of RAM, which means that when you look at your ram usage, it will show up to 4 gb or 4096 mb of ram.
BUT
if you have windows 32 bit OS installed, you wil only be able to fully utilize 3- 3.2 gb of RAM or in this case about 3072-3276 mb of ram. Which all means that if your Notebook needs to use more than 3 gigs of ram, You cant because youre running many softwares that are recieving and retrieving data, then you wont be able to use all of that 4gb that you paid for.
pro's for 64 bit: better data acquisition because its based on 64 bit "capable" type processors.
cons for 64 bit: most programs run on 32 bit OS. therefore making it harder for the user to run these programs on the 64 bit OS that they have. BUT its getting better because alot of these programs are coming out with 64 bit capability but yet not fast enough, thatswhy some prefer 32 bit instead especially when running older softwares or programs.
hope this helps -
helps a ton actually
i ordered it with 4 gigs
so when 64 is a real viable not half ****ed idea ill upgrade
also please some one tell me Dell is gonna live up to its word and allow for GPU upgrades
and is GRAW coming standard with price? -
At present Dell Australia is including GRAW2 if you select the AGEIA PhysX PPU option with your M1730 order.

It obviously goes without saying that the 32 bit Vista installations will see ~3.2 GB of RAM. I ordered 4 GB because:
1. I want something future proof (I can always go 64-bit, and see all the 4 GB)
-and-
2. 3 GB is still better and greater than 2 GB
I think the majority of people here understand already the address size limitations, and the ramifications of it; they just want the most they can get.
Now, let's see some benchmarks. I still haven't seen any reviews worth noting, and all that THG has is a short, relatively vague video-review that states the obvious the whole time: http://www.tomsguide.com/us/site/flash_videos/dell_xps_m1730_smoke_laptop.html
The reviewer mentions a review on THG, but I haven't found it.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -

When you're paying for a notebook that's base price $2,999.00, throwing in another couple hundred bucks for 4 GB is really change.
My thoughts were to just go balls-to-the wall on this system. -
amen
future proof it for a few years
thats my hope -

Hi guys (my first post here),
I've placed my order on Monday for the blue m1730 with 2.2mhz & 4gb ram 500gb HD space. After an initial discrepancy with my employers discount coupon I finally got a phone confirmation that the order is going through (yay!) however this has cost me a week in getting my lappy (nooo!). But when you add my salary sacrifice I will only be paying about $2,200 in the end so the week delay is no biggie.
I decided to downgrade to Vista Premium as I don't think I require Ultimate for my gaming, Adobe CS3 graphic art work and novel writing. I also opted out of the Ageia card extra as the reports I have read have said you get a reduced fps for $250, however, I didn't know about the GRAW2 offer which may have tipped me in favour (damn!). Does anyone agree with this view of the Ageia reviewers?
I got this as a desktop replacement that I can easily take to work or to a friends place for network gaming so for me it doesn't really matter about the size or the lack of mobility and the apparent reliance on the mains power.
It's funny how making a purchase like this brings the kid out in a middle aged man... -
-
Thanks man.
-
If i were you guys, i would rather buy the 2 gig or even 1 gb if the system can run on it for a while and then just buy the RAMs from newegg cause its way cheaper. 4 gig jump in price is ridiculous.
i have 64 bit OS and 2 gigs of ram......im thinking about getting a 2gb single ram and removing one of my current ones. That way ill have a total of 3gb, which is more than you need for now. Unless you do graphics and that sort of stuff. -
-
it might even more cheaper if you jsut modify the RAM after you bought cuz replacing a memory is a walk in the park
-
The extra $700 is not just for the 2gb in extra ram. You also go from 1x160gb hard disks to 2x250gb and your 24hr service increases from 1yr to 3yrs plus you get more bonuses than the lesser model and lastly you go from Visa Premium to Ultimate (which you can downgrade and get a credit).
I think the extra money is well worth it. There is an added benefit for those who salary sacrifice as well, they only pay $490 which you cannot do if you buy later. -
@ MB thank you for clearing that up!
so, what i wanna know is this: Why does every one only argue the price and hardware, That Phys Proc....with over a hundred games by end 2008 and dell shipping them. Others will follow suit. This card is gonna catch, its effect is undeniable, and in it lies this systems longevity, its auto updating via patch to work with ANY GAME patched to it........granted i dont see people programing this thing to run SIMS apps anytime soon, up the GPU to 8800. 4 gig Ram... 3.2 GHZ (i still think properly cooled it'll hit 3.4) its like a good math problem..it all adds up.
longevity.
thats my thought. -

Now that some people actually own this machine, can someone find out:
1) what is the specific touchpad on the M1730? (As in make and model.)
2) what is the specific Ethernet NIC on the M1730? (Broadcom...?)
Thanks. -
I have one question...
Bioshock.... how does the SLI 8700's cope with that game? Does the 1730 have enough "Ooomph" to run the game at high detail, like its meant to be played? -

Hi people, my first post, i was reading all the topic, just before make a post
, i was looking all the information over Internet about the new XPS M1730, and I'm thinking to buy it assuming the pros, and cons of the machine.
But i have a couple of doubts, I'm thinking to configure it whit XP OS, but i really don't know if that is a good idea, i was reading some thighs about no DX10 on XP OS it's that completely true?, i have to death whit Vista?
How long will arrive the new nvidia 8800 SLI? is better wait for it?, what are you talking about dell upgrades GPU?
Thanks, -
Quick correction to the misinformation going around here. With Vista 32bit and Santa Rosa chipset, you'll see 3.5GB of your 4GB. With the older chipset, it was a little over 3GB. 3.5GB out of 4GB isn't bad...
-
mr greenfingers Notebook Consultant
just wanted to add that i owe all you guys a thank you! its all the great posts and feedback that helped me make the decision to buy my 1730 you all filled in the gaps in info that the dell site did not mention so cheers everyone you all rock! lol

All this talk about the size makes me glad I didn't get the XPS M2010! Now that would have had my wife shaking her head...

Well folks (and fellow geeks), at precisely 12:54pm a brand-new Smoke Gray and Black baby was delivered (to my door).
Of course for this grand occasion and being the proud parent that I am, I just had to snap (more than) a few pictures of my new baby's surrounding before making its appearance into the world (of my sun room).
As Stevez said "... more to come ...".Attached Files:

Congrats! The waiting is killing me as I still have a couple of weeks to go. :-(
-
Mind you, this delivery did not take place without incident. Last Wednesday I had been told delivery was arranged for between 8:00am and 12:00pm today. At 11:35 this morning I decided to give a call to Schenker Logistics who handle Dell's deliveries. After waiting on the phone for 20 minutes to get to the front of the queue I asked if my order was still arriving before midday. I was told there had been a problem with my delivery. When I asked what the problem was, I was told that my delivery had not been picked up by their driver. So to cut to the chase, the guy in Schenker Logistics said he would arrange to have the delivery to me by 1:00pm today using a courier called MailCall. So, as you can see by the pictures, I am now a proud parent. But if I hadn't called them today, my M1730 would not have arrived today as it was supposed to.

Hang in there MrBubbles it's worth the wait!!!

I have been reading on other forums (XPS M1330 owners lounge) of the benefit people are receiving (response-wise) from doing a clean install to remove "bloatware" and set partitions the way you want them. They are saying it made boot-up time considerably faster among other benefits.
Does anyone here plan on doing that to their M1730? I am thinking of doing it but would like to know your opinions before embarking on this particular adventure.
