i placed my order back in sept but something went wrong with it so i re-ordered it on the 8th oct. it is now saying that it's esd is 24th oct. why is it still on pre-production stage. how long will it be at that stage.
can't wait to get it. -
Theres another problme ur facing
my production ended in one day. And urs takin a week?
U shud contact Dell -
On the cosmetic side of things I am disappointed to discover a small chip on the top right-hand-side of the display (with the display closed). It is a very small chip but visible because the layer under the black paint is white and contrasts very clearly with the black surface. Grrrrrrr!!! Other than that the machine seems to be cosmetically well-constructed and free from obvious defects. -
dell sales rep sent me a pic of my laptop which showed it was in production. how long would it take for it to be built?
-
I'm kind of pissed off at the moment, I just woke up, checked my email, and saw:
"You have received a new order confirmation because it was necessary to cancel and reenter your original order to prevent additional delays. The components on your system have remained the same or better than those on your original system. We have upgraded your shipment method to allow faster delivery. We apologize for any delays you have already experienced. Should you decide you no longer wish to continue with this order, please contact a customer care agent at 1-888-242-0940 for assistance."
Order was placed on: 10/15/2007
Estimated Shipping Date: 11/16/2007
Mind you, the original order was placed: Order Date: 9/27/2007
And it was supposed to ship on this friday...
That's absolutely unacceptable, I don't think it's fair to be placed at the absolute back of the line given how long I've waited...
I noticed that they changed my wireless card to: 1 430-2582 Intel 4965 WLAN (802.11a/g/n) Mini Card -
period
no new ship date
nothing
after 3 hours on the phone
i still dont know why -
So who where in the US has it?
-
Could anyone who has got theirs tell me the battery life from full with everything off, brightness on low and vista set to power saver mode?
Could really do with a definite answer on the max battery it offers.
Thanks, -

going to call dell tomoro to see whats happening with my order they better have good news for me or im going to blow my lid!!!!!! -
Lucid Burner, I'm in the same boat, apparently.
I'm pretty pissed off, it doesn't feel good to know we're basically at the back of the line, despite ordering absolutely first. That's unacceptable, and I sent them an email to that affect.
Let's see how they respond. I've been waiting forever, literally, just give me the thing now. -

quick initial review/comments about the 1730...have only had a brief chance to play with it
Looks:
Much more pleasant than I thought (got the smoke grey). Yes I've seen the photos around the web and even dell's website. Main thing which held me back from buying this originally was purely the looks. I'm the type who usually goes after the more minimalist look (e.g. HP 8107p/w, Asus v1s), but seriously, once I turned off the LED's, it was quite pleasant looking. Little bit gamer looking still, but not obscene as lots of people have been saying at least to my eyes. All I can say is, I was pleasantly surprised in a good way with the looks.
Build:
Solid. This thing is big, thick, solid etc. I laughed when I saw the power brick, its huge. The little Belkin bag (inside the Belkin laptop bag) they give you to house the powerbrick/cords, the size of a pencil case didn't obviously fit the powerbrick.
Chassis is solid. I have the notebook pirtched up on a laptop stand designed for a 15" notebook so the rails which prop the notebook up aren't supporting the widest edges of the notebook and it doesn't flex anywhere.
LCD lid doesn't seem to wobble, very smooth movement, no creaking and once again, solid.
Nitpick: the surroundings around the DVI-out port and S-Video port have some movement/play, but doesn't feel like it will fall off.
Keyboard:
Not much travel in the keys, but is ok, they're silver/white, so I question the longevity of how the new look will be
Used to a IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad, the dell keyboard isn't as much to my liking, but I can live with it. It's by no means poor. Haven't pressed into it to see if it flexes though, I'm not a heavy typer anyway.
Touch pad:
Small, too small. With a 1900x1200 screen and a low sensitivity mouse speed, it takes a while to get from one side of the screen to the other. Would prefer a Trackpointer or whatever that little thing is in the middle of the Thinkpad keyboards/some HP/Compaq's is.
No scroller button or fingerprint recognition, but can live without it.
The touch pad annoys me somewhat because there's such a large touch pad to use. I find myself hitting the edges quite often. Can live with this as well.
Heat:
This laptop runs warm. Not hot. It runs constantly fairly warm, haven't played games on this yet, so not sure if it will run hot or not. When running photoshop cs2, it seemed to stay warm if thats an indication or not.
Palm rests stay warm, left one gets a fair bit warmer when the DVD drive is in use (obviously).
So non-conclusive as yet because I haven't loaded a game on it yet.
Screen:
Fantastic, little light leakage as expected from a CCFL (or whatever non-LED backlit) LCD.
Not grainy, I've put text and different coloured backgrounds on all areas of the screen and the colour and sharpness is consistent.
Thats it so far, overall impression is very good, main thing that has annoyed me is Vista and some of the Dell branded/or other software bloatware. I've since then removed the bloatware i don't need, but vista will take a little bit more time getting used to.
Hope that helps, and thank you to you all in the notebookreview.com community for the honest feedback to help make my purchase decision as well informed as possible! -
Great review bahman, can anyone fill in the gaps? Especially with hi-end games and heavy graphics/photoshop work.
-

... Wow...

-
Grrr, i've been trying to get SLI and Ghost Recon working all day..
You cannot even select high quality textures in Ghost recon as it only sees the one 256MB card.. requires 512MB to go to high quality..
I've set SLI mode enabled in nvidia control panel but when i load ghost recon, nothing!
I then found the 3d settings for each game, i found graw2.exe and changed sli mode to force-frame rendering.. But now when i load the game there is a big chunck of the screen missing!!
I'm not really sure why, but it seems SLI with Ghost Recon wasn't even tested by DELL. -
Ok guys, here's the update regarding what's going on with my XPS M1730 delayed order. I sort of sent them a professional but serious email asking (respectfully) what the hell is going on with my order being delayed.
Their response:
"I apologize for the unusually long time period involved in the processing of
your order. The XPS M1730 with gray color is one of our latest launches and
as happens with any popular new launch, the volume of orders being received
by us is in excess of our immediate turnaround capacity. We had anticipated
this and had therefore provided a lead-time of 15-30 days. This is the
reason why you were given an estimated ship date of October 19, 2007.
However, due to exceptional delay in your order, the order is cancelled,
placed again and you have been given a new estimated ship date of November
16, 2007 compared to the regular 5-7 days time frame involved for Dell
system orders. However, this is just an estimated ship date and it may
happen that your order ships out well before the estimated date. "
They then offered me a $100.00 credit for the delay, as well, because I noted I already had paid for the fastest shipping possible.
I'm ok with that, so long as it does turn out that the order ships before the quoted time. -
they upgraded me to next day air
and i was ok with that -

I got my XPS 1730 today. Grey with 2GB RAM, T7500 (2.2Ghz), Dual 8700M GT, Dual 160 GB 7200 RPM HD's.
It's awesome! Only complaint is that I ordered a spare 230W AC adapter but only one arrived. I've contacted Dell about it and sure that will get sorted.
Without any config of the drivers (did enable SLI) I got 7892 3DMark06 score. Not bad!
I have one question at the moment.
Yes I can turn on and off the keyboard backlight with the function key.
BUT can I turn on and off the left and right front lights without going into the BIOS?
I have to admit I haven't read the manual yet. Just enjoying it first but through I would ask the question before reading the manual. -
theres a dell quick setup icon in the startup menu.
You can change it from there through the game options -
Well finally my order has shipped this morning as well. I was getting worried after seeing a few posts regarding cancelled orders. Thanks to those of you who have posted pics and reviews so far.
One thing i do recall in messaging with a user of this thread is that he had his order cancelled 3 times due to an incompatibility with the Bluetooth module. He finally removed that as an option but now has to wait longer for his order as well.
Anyway i am excited to get mine...
Order date: 09/27
Production Date: 10/04
Shipped Date: 10/16
Delivered: ??? -
And you should be able to do that w/out going inot BIOS but I honestly can't tell you for sure. -
-
I can't believe it!!!!
I placed my order on 1 October and I just checked my progress. They only put the order in the system on 15 October!
I got phone calls from Mumbai after my order was placed and I had to spell out the entire phone call, I guess it took them two weeks to translate.
At least it's gone to the second stage, 'work in progress'.
I hope I get it before Xmas...
On the bright side, they may have fixed the SLI issues by then. -
-
SLI issues?

Ah well. You can't have your cake and eat it (although spending $2500.00+ should let you!). I assume this is Vista-related, as is everything?

grrrrr still on pre production from the 5th been in touch with dell and no answers as to why but they say my order will be deliverd on or befor 29th i also asked them about the sli issues they had no clue of any issues i did ask them about this befor i placed my order as i knew my mate had major issues with his alienware with sli and vista he still says he is having problems and alienware customer service is a waist of time hope dells live up to there reputation with customer care!!!!!
-
Im also still in pre-production from the 3rd, although I actually ordered on the day it came out but Dell managed to make some mistakes and it took until then to sort out. I would be interested to know if anyone in the UK has got past pre-production?
-
FYI here is a pic of the delivery for my XPS1730 - I am in Australia as you can probably see in the pic.
Where do the Notebooks/PC's components etc for DELL UK get put together/shipped from? In Aus it's Malaysia I think.
-
It's normally Ireland for the UK as far as I know, but it looks like they would be quicker if they sent it from Malaysia!
-
-
Probably wise, although there are some models which should be quicker according to this.
-
This is a question to the few of you who have received their XPS M1730 regarding the panel:
In the previous model (M1710) the panel quality was very variable, as several models were used:
- Sharp SHP 13C1 (worst)
- Samsung SEC 3155 (good)
- LG: LPL00000 (best)
I had to have Dell replace my laptop 5 times until I got a good LG Panel that exhibitted none of the light bleeding or clouding seen on the samsung and had brighter colors and better black levels than the sharp.
Therefore my question to you new owners of an M1730:
Can you comment on your panel. Which model do you have in your system (this can be checked in the Device Manager, by clicking on the "Plug and Play Display Device" and checking the reference there).
I have ordered my M1730 already and am worried that I might have to go through the same ordeal as previously...
Any comments on the models and their respective strengths/weaknesses would be greatly appreciated.

Almightiness, what tracking/order status URL are you using to get that? All I can ever find is the really basic one that tells me nothing other than that my order is in production.
Much thanks! -
What's the sound coming from the 1730's speakers like?
As for Dell Delays and them saying that it's unusual...I say Bread and Butter.
