I created an order on the 12'th. What is the average time from "in production" to actual shipment? Thanks, ^_^

It's ****ing ****.. i'm really disappointed in this laptop..
SLI in vista is stuffed, no games work. I tried to go to windows XP and games run a bit faster but it's still really slow and slugish..
It only JUST runs half life 2 on high quality everything, in open area's where you have gun battles it just lags..
I've already notified DELL that i'll be returning my Laptop if they can't get this sorted out.. -
My fears are coming true!!!!
I should have gone to the local IT store and got a desktop with kick ass specs for half the price... :-( -
Stevez - I haven't had any issues with SLI on my 1730...just under 8000 on 3Dmark06. Only had time to play HL2 Ep2 on it so far but that it running beautifully at full res (1920x1200).
I did update to the latest Nvidia drivers from the Dell website first though.
Drivers I am using (for Vista 32Bit) are here:
http://support.ap.dell.com/support/...n&ServiceTag=&SystemID=XPS_1730&os=WLH&osl=EN
Oh and of course I enabled SLI within the driver as well. -
I assume the screen is beautiful. Dead or stuck pixels, anyone?
-
-
I have noticed a bit of light bleed particularly at the bottom of the screen when the screen isn't running something bright but it's not that bad. I am a bit of a perfectionist but it's certainly not enough of a problem for me to return it.
-
Am I missing something?
-
-
Has anyone got the drivers for the monitor?
Mine is only Generic PnP Monitor and I haven't been able to find a driver for the monitor for the 1730.
Kind regards

hey people,
Im new here. Just joined because I saw this thread on google while I was searching for anything concrete on my new m1730.
Some specs;
17" 1920x1200
2.4GHz C2D
2GB MEM
200GB 7200RPM
Blue
Dual 8700 GT
Physx proc
Basically the cheapest config, which came in at 3200 or so dollars.
I ordered mine 10/18. Est. ship date is 10/22.
I saw a post a page back about someone not being impressed with gaming. If this thing doesnt blow my mind with games, Im most certainly sending back. I didnt pay 3200 dollars to warm up to it. It better have me right from the word go.
I play silly games like need for speed and spilnter cell and rainbow six and doom 3, but I like to turn every single setting to max. -
I placed my order on 10/6. The ETA is 10/29.
Specs:
2.8 GHz
4 GB RAM
2 x 200 GB 7200RPM (RAID 0)
Blue
Dual 8700MGT (although the order-status itself states G84?)
PhysX proc
$4500
While it's technically not delayed based on that ETA, I figured there is probably some part that is not in stock. After many online chats and a few phone calls, I got it tracked down today to the processor (2.8 Ghz) that is on back-order.
I'm pretty excited, but I was disappointed that there was no option to add a second power supply (so I can dock at home and at work). -
It says online that there's a lead time of 2-3 weeks.
What I hate about Dell is their abusive use of the word "estimated" which means an ESTIMATED date like October 25th 2007, could possibly be January 2010 since, according to dell "It's JUST and estimate".
Anyone know how the 1730 stacks up against the 1710? Also, repeat question on the sound quality via speakers? -
Opening the box when it arrived was certainly a pleasant experience. HOWEVER, when I pressed the power button for the first time I was greeted with grinding noises from the optical drive and error messages saying Windows Vista could not load (or something to that effect). I was paralysed !!! I tried anything I could think of including many reboots but to no avail.
The following morning I was on the phone to tech support for almost two hours. Initially talking to a hardware tech who took me through the F12 checks in BIOS and after reaching the stage of passing the memory checks he decided to had me over to a software tech. We went through the whole Dell "restore Vista to original" deal as he suspected Vista had been corrupted. That didn't work. The final step was to do a clean install and at that point he told me his shift was over and call back if I still had any problems after doing the clean install.
Well the clean install did get Vista up and running but I am concerned at the grinding sound the optical drive makes as soon as I power-up. However my Vista Ultimate problems are not entirely solved as one of the critical updates refuses to install on my machine. It is "Update for Windows Vista (KB929777)". Every time I try to install it I get the error message "Code 8000FFFF". This code is not listed in the "Get Help" screen. Can anyone shed any light on this?
I have not noticed any dead pixels on the screen but the light bleeding from the bottom of the screen on a dark screen is noticeable only on a dark screen. My display is shown as "Generic PnP".
I have now got to the stage where I have set most things up to my liking (software et al).
I have attached a few pics of the 1730 connected via Dual DVI to drive my 30" Dell monitor at 2560x1600. I hope to try GRAW2 when I get time in the next couple of days.Attached Files:

Tasty! The monitor that is... Not the grinding noise! Yucko. You poor bugger that is not something I would wish on anyone.
Any idea what the optical drive is grinding on/why it is making the noise???
FYI I recently returned an Inspiron 1720 a it went like clockwork. I returned it because I decided I would prefer the XPS 1730 I now have. I would think a problem with your optical drive would be decent grounds for a replacement.
Just if you feel like it.
Mine has the light bleed from the bottom of the LCD as well as you say when you have a black background ie screensaver it is most noticeable. I managed to reduce it considerably by playing with the colour settings in the Nvidia drivers. Brightness at 47%, Digital Vibrance at 0%, Contrast at 47% and Gamma at 46%.
Where did you get the Dual DVI cable?
Could that be used to run dual monitors instead of 3007 FPW?
Kind regards

Oh and that is one CLEAN desk by the way!
Here's mine.

That's what I don't get about the 1730 - it's marketed as the end all, be all uber machine of doom... but the 8700 GT just doesn't have the raw performance that it's marketing hype does. -
The 2 x 8700M GT's running in SLI is about equivalent to my desktop 8800GTS 640MB (3DMark06 score) and I am really happy with that. -
glad your happy with it lee, if mine ends up as fast as a desktop 8800 i`ll be stoked. I hope we`re only hearing all the bad stories because the good stories are playing theirs.

To those of you who want to read the reference of their panels: the Plug and Play device IS your panel. You need to double click and check the details. If you have more than 1 plug and play display device listed, you need to do this on each of them (but usually the last one listed is your panel).
Alternatively you can use programs like Powerquest Everest that will analyse your system and give you a complete report on all components.
Please share with the forum what panel models you have in your system and if possible, please try to post pictures of any light leaking on a dark background so that people can make their opinion, as to whether it will disturb them or not. -
I don't know why the optical drive is making grinding sounds when the computer is booted up. The grinding is not present if I put a CD or DVD in the drive. When you eject the tray on your 1730 does it have alot of freeplay (side-to-side)? Also after you have closed the drive is there some movement if you push try to push the tray a little further into the chassis? One possible source of the grinding sound might be due to the optical drive not being securely fitted into the chassis. I'm just guessing.
I'm not sure about returning the unit for exchange at this stage Lee. I've spent most of the past 48 hours getting the 1730 set up to my needs and don't really want to go through it again so soon.
Thanks for the heads-up on your tweaks to the display settings.
I bought the 30" monitor from Dell last month and the dual-DVI cable was included.
You've got me as to whether the dual-link DVI cable will support two monitors. I haven't looked into that aspect of the cable. I was only looking at it from the point of running the 30" screen at 2560x1600.
Apart from the display (which you have tweaked) are there any problems with your 1730? -

well looks like there are a few unhappy ppl on hear im still looking forward to mine arriving it cost me £2600 so if its not up to spec then i will be sending it back truly hope it is though iv been wanting a desktop replacement for a while now fed up with playing games in a seperate room away from my tv hi-fi etc was chating with one of the dell reps the other day and got the usual "our products are tested to the max" then why all the problems its just not on! look forward to seeing some positive feedback regards gaming as this will be my main use keep posting and thanks for all the picks
-
None that I have found so far. Just the light bleed but it's liveable if you don't focus on it. -
-
Pics of my XPS 1730 in the dark.
-
Your first in-the-dark picture showing the light bleed is similar to my screen. No surprises there I suppose as you said your display also came up as "Generic PnP". -
Do the colors remain saturated above 55 brightness? One of the issues of the 3155 was that the colors were only well saturated below 55% brightness, so you had very little room for improving brightness. On the LG (LPL00000), you can turn up brightness to 65% without a significant loss in color saturation.
Anyone else who can post their panel model using the methods I described?

Well update: Im in Production-Boxing stage.
Ordered Oct. 16
Im really regretting not getting the 2.8 now, but it wasnt in my budget.
I probably cant upgrade right? -

If you argue well (about how pricey those systems are and the fact that you would expect performance that beats competitors by a good measure for that price), they will offer cost free replacement with a better system (potentially with some extra EUR for the processor).
The advantage is you can keep your current system until you have received the new one.

when they hear the price, so they wanna see some of divine perfromance
Its like buying a ferrari, and being out performed at the track by a hyundai. you paid a premium for the ferrari because its supposed to be the best at going round a track very quickly, so it should do that.
You think the manager will buy that
Thanks for the advise! I had a 8800GTX in my desktop I built, so pretty much im expecting that performance. I hope I havent set the bar to high -
Looks like i will be able to post officially
in here soon! Been umming and arrring over laptops for the past week or so...
I'm going to place my order for an XPS M1730 today or tomorrow ^_^ the 7950's in the alienware systems had me tempted for a while, but all in all it seems the XPS offers more for the money ~ Plus with a bit of luck the DX10 performance with those GPU's in SLI will be more than sufficiant for current/upcoming games. I just pray if the 8800M turns up (and it fits in Alienwares M9750) that DELL will offer upgrades for current 1730 owners (i dont mean free).
So anyway... this is the spec...

I'd like the Blu-Ray but its a bit too much extra for me right now.
I talked to someone on DELLS online chat, and they told me that if i wanted to change the Fixed drive for a Blu-Ray drive later it would void the warrenty and DELL didnt offer the service to replace it though them to keep it intact.
Anyone know if thats true? Thats kinda rediculous. -
The warranty becomes void only for the components that you replaced or any component you may have damaged through this, not for the full system. If the cause of an issue is not you, then of course the warranty is still valid (like if your cooling system gets clugged with dust).
But generally they can't even check this. In my case I changed both the panel and the keyboard of my M1710 and the technician never asked about this or noticed.
The truth is only the technican can oberve ill-treatment of your equipment, but that's only after he was sent to replace the part, and since Technicians are hired by Dell (and not Dell employees) I don't think it makes a difference for them whether you have to pay for the part replacement. And to be honnest, most technicians will empathize with your problem rather than with Dell. -
