There's two things that I've been wondering which I haven't really seen addressed yet.

    (1) I'm US and plan to buy the m1730, but I really dislike the lack of configuration options available--if I get the basic one, I'm stuck with blue color and no config, if I get the medium, I'm stuck with Blu-ray, and if I get the best, I'm stuck with the extreme processor.

On all of them I get the Ageia. I want an m1730 without the Blue-ray, without the extreme CPU, and without the Ageia, and I see that this is already possible in Australia--when might this happen in US? Any way to do that right now?

    (2) I read a few things about the giant power brick. Are there any smaller power bricks that would still be compatible with the m1730 that I could travel with, or do the voltage specs limit me to the big one.

I don't know much about power brick limitations so please help.

    Thanks!

Why did US made three configuration?
I think anyone would including me would recommend the Extremem Proccesor.
I dont think there are any options to the power brick cuz when i took the brick on my hands, it was the size of my face!! (seriusly big 230W)

By the way, my XPS came on Wednesday!!!
    Configurations are on my signature.
So far, i didnt have any problems playing games like Half Life 2 nor Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. I didnt try the Episode 2 and Portal yet, so ill keep you posted about their experiences.

Thank you very much. It seems like you got an LG. Do you see any light leeking at the bottom on dark grey/black backgrounds?

This seems to be the next generation of LG panel, (previous was LPL00000) so if logic is respected, your panel should be awesome. Congrats!!!

This means Dell still use both LG and Samsung but with newer models.

    Hi Parker

How is your Panel? And what model is it (you cn check this in the system device manager, by clicking onthe plug and play display device). So far people have reported LG panel (LPL0032, so far no feedback on quality) and Samsung (SEC5443, some reducible light leaking at the bottom)

No leakage anyware that i can tell, i have not done alot as of yet to be honest but the screen seems amazing, only be on it for an hour so far... right now i am at the point of debating to reinstall vista or put xp on it. Just want to do the clean install first. I am leaning towards xp until sp1 is released, also by the sounds of it some people are having SLI issues in vista so i wanted to see if this occurs in xp as well.

Just quickly i put on a black background and also a bright one and took a close look at the screen and i see no leakage at all. Everything is extremely crisp.

Once i get this thing up and running i will try some games etc and let you know what i find.

    hi Billy

Don't install XP. You can customize your vista so it mimics XP in every aspect. If you have vista premium, you can only do this after activating the real admin account with full privileges and from there you can then disable all the pop-up confirmation windows (they really annoyed me at first). If oyu have ultimate you can deactivate those services more easily in the system settings.

But of course if you only want to try XP for benchmarking, please do it. Just odn't do it for ergonomy or looks. You can make Vista flow like XP and look nicer.

This is brilliant for the people who get the LG panels. But it is a shame Dell still uses the Samsung ones since people always find the LG ones better (crisp colors and no light leaking).

If I receive a Samsung panel, I will certainly send my system back for replacement until I get an LG panel. Subject to further feedback from you guys.

Also, if your system was built with Vista in mind, installing XP might not be an optimal configuration in terms of compatibility and specs right?

BillyV can you please take a picture of your screen in the dark with a black background (black background screensaver is perfect)? I want to see what the light leakage is like on an LG screen seeing as mine is a Samsung.

The issues with the samsung were not only limited to ligh leakage. Compared to the LG the colors faded more quickly about 55 brightness (on th LG, the colors wouldnt get washed out above 65 brightness or more).

This means the colors on the LG panel were usually more crisp, even if you increased bigthness. I was surprised about this when I first used the LG. Previously I had thought the behavior of the Samsung screen was normal. And actually I discovered later the Samsung LCD TV panels also have the same issues: shadow detail loss at low stimulous and washed out colors at high stimulus (forming a skewed gamma curve and resulting in inaccurate greyscales), even though the colors are accurate betwen 20% and 60% stimulous.

OK i have no idea if i am posting this correctly but here is my attempt at some images. Please note this is a crap camera and when i looked at the pictures i saw what i thought were dead pixels... trust me when i say its the camera (you can see some off to the side of the screen as well). Also in the bottom left portion of the pictures you may see a darker blue area, this again is the camera. (OK i know i need a new one, the shutter sticks as well)

Anyway if this doesnt work the way i hope, and you want the originals please msg me and i will send them to you via email.

Leebaldock, i did the black screen saver and it does look like there maybe some light leakage when i did that... bit brighter at the top and bottom if that is what you are refering to. The camera seems to emphasis this as well, maybe because its the light it was picking up, it looks actually worse in the pictures but it is definately there in real life as well. I do not see this at all outside of the screen saver, not sure if this means anything to you. (i have never looked for screen leakage before)

Sure.. i have not done the reinstall yet, dont even know if that matters?

    processor 5.6 (X7900)
    memory 5.0 (4GB - i know 64 bit... someday)
    graphics 5.9
    gaming graphics 5.6
    hard disk 5.9 (2x200GB @7200)

I have not done any tweaks or anything yet this is still out of the box. I haven't enabled SLI either (i think it is not on by default?)

Hope this helps. If it changes after the reinstall or tweaking i will let you know.. i think i am just about ready to do the clean install.

Puremind, i have decided to go with Vista for now. I dont have any problems changing at a later time if it seems slow, but in using it right now pre clean install it seems fast, much better than my last experience with vista.

Also someone mentioned the system maybe setup for vista only but they do configure it with XP and provide all the necessary drivers if your interested in that.

This is my experience index for the M1710. I'm surprised the M1730 isn't much different...

    m1710 specs:

    - 2.33 GHz Core2 Duo T7600 (overclocked to 2.66)
    - Hitachi 7K200 7200 RPM (200GB)
    - 4 GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM

    Thanks BillyV.

Yeh that light leakage looks much better than mine. More "even". Looks more like my Asus F3MJ panel which is a better panel than my XPS 1730...

Aaargh...looks like I need to talk to Dell. Bugger. I hate it when I notice "issues" and can't overcome them - ie constantly notice it.

This looks similar to what I have on my XPS M1710 with LG panel. The only times I noticed it was when playing film material on Windows Media Player, as the band below would have that very thin light leaking. On the Samsung panel I had before I foundit unberable as the whole band below the video was much brighter than the band above the video. It remove the cinema feeling completely...

It has the capability for one. But you have to add it to your order. I think it costs around $250, but they usually have something like a $200 rebate once you sign up with a carrier.

As i told everyone i will sorta report on the game expereinces on my XPS
First of all, I attached my windows experience (srry its in japanese cuz im from Japan)
Anyways i bought Orange Box and Enemy Territory and so far i havent experienced any problems at all. For the Orange Box i havent tested out Episode 1 and 2 cuz im startin the whole thing all over. Half Life 2 worked very smooth even with the highest setting.
Even if Dell seemed to face some problem, I think XPS M1730 is indeed a Beast. A definate beast. It cant beat a desktop game pc but it is still powerful enough to play current and future games.
It was a really good buy for me to buy it.

    Okay Guys.
I did try out the CNC3 on XPS.
I would recommend using the High setting and not Ultra High.
The system will work on Ultra high but as you start a skirmish, the processing gets slower and slower.

What panel do you have on your XPS M1730 (you can check the reference in the device manager if you click on the pug & play device?

So far the following models have been reported in the US and French forums as M1730 panels:
    • SEC5443 (light bleeding on 2-3 centimeters, irregular lighting)
    • LPL0032 (minor light bleeding)
    • SHP13D9 (so far no feedback on quality)

Which model do you have and how do you rate its quality?

My estimated delivery date was moved from 24th of October to mid November ... got an email explaining they have shortages in components delivery, without any further details.

I live in Sweden, and probably it takes longer for components to get here :(.

Congrats. The LG panel has received the best feedback so far. I just received feedback on the new sharp. People seem to be happy with it. But waiting to get feedback from people who can compare to the previous panels for more reliability (if I had received teh sharp panel without prior knowledge, I would have found it ok, only after discovering how great the LG is would I have been appalled LOL)

Just posted this in another thread but i orderd an XPS M1730 last night and got the following....

So, Inritus, the shortages arent just in Sweden it seems.

Kinda sucks it seems to take so long for a laptop with the base configuration pretty much. An alienware system i was going to order (M9750) had a really long lead time and that was 29th November! And that was only when i added extra options too it (the UXGA screen added 28 days delay ). But yeah, guess ill have to suck it up and try to be patient.

Found this on Toms Hardware ( www.)tomsguide.com/us/2007/10/15/sibling_rivalry/ . The m9750 scores better on the game section (no surprise), but the overall bang-for-buck comparison the overclocked m1730 leads. Just thought it was quite interesting to read the differences between the quality of the screen between the two. Especially for all of us who have already ordered the m1730 :p

And the alienware wasn't even tested on Vista...The gap would have been wider with both systems on Vista but the m1730 had xp on it...

Calling all Australians or those of us in South East Asia (got your XPS 1730 from Malaysia)....

Can you check your LCD Panel and tell us what you have?

So far I (Perth) and Karanjit (Sydney) have SEC5443 panels. I want to exchange my 1730 but I want to be really sure I have a good chance of getting the LPL0032 before I do.

The 1 inch strip of light leakage on the bottom of the screen is really starting to annoy me as is the slightly darker and brighter sections of the monitor. It's like it doesn't have a consistent brightness throughout.

To check your monitor panel go to Device Manager => Monitors => Generic PnP Monitor => Details tab => Hardware Ids dropdown...
