Congrats!
For the processor, I'm just not sure if I can justify $650 for marginal gains, I think I'm going to take the SSD instead.
Yes the extreme processor is fast, but is it noticeably faster? My current Inspiron 8600 has only a single 1.7ghz Pentium M, and yes I definitely notice delays, but it's still fast enough for recent games (barring newest DX10 games): my Radeon 9600 is what holds me back.
I'm guessing that the m1730 graphics card will be outdated long before the cheaper processor becomes outdated.
Anything else I should be taking into consideration?
---EDIT---
It now seems that US citizens can now customize the mid-level m1730 to remove both the extreme processor and the Blu-ray drive, which is awesome, but still not the Ageia. But I think I'll wait a bit longer for manufacturing kinks to get worked out and also for the possibility of an 8800m.

I ordered mine on the 13th and its all ready on a ship and the dell site says that it should be at my house by the 25th of october. Ordered mine the top specs, intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme X7900 (2.8ghz), 4GB (2x2GB) 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM, Dual NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) 8700M GT graphics with NVIDIA SLI Technology, 160GB SATA 7200RPM Performance Hard Drive, AGEIA PhysX Mobile Technology(TM). Cant wait for it to come, does anyone know if it could run Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts on the highest settings. And is dual 8700 gt's better than dual 7950 Gt's?

I am based in Germany, Europe and it took me 5 replacements to get an LG on my M1710.
Having said that, not all is bad about the Samsung panels: they are warmer, have the deepest black (lightly darker than LG) and good color brilliance. The whites are less white (warmer) than on LG
On the LG colors are very crisp, the blacks are good, the whites excellent and it has almost no light leaking.
I must say I hesitated a long time between the samsung and the LG panel. The Samsung is nice to look at (doesn't strain your eyes), but web pages look prettier on the LG because the primary colors pop with saturation against the white background. -
What LCD panel seems most common in the U.S.?
-
In case I receive a Samsung panel, what do I tell Dell in order to have them replace the laptop? Do I just complain about the quality? Thanks in advance.
-
Does anyone with the blu-ray drive know the name and model number?
-
-
I'm not 100% sure that I will return it, even if it is a Samsung. But if it bothers me after a while, I'd just like to know what to do next. I will only return the Samsung if it has excessive uneven lighting (the light bleed band at the bottom will not bother me that much), or if it has stuck pixels. I can't STAND stuck/dead pixels.

I have the SHP13D9 no issues screan looks assume .One question who makes it .

Why does the panel differ within countries?
some kind of singal or electronic issues regarding the country? -
The advantage of a replacement is that you can keep your system until the new one arrives.
Of course you should complain about quality, praising them won't help. You must sound disappointed because of the price versus such a major flaw. If they say that the next sytem is likely to look the same, you can explain about user experiences with 3 different panel models, so you have hope to get better quality on your next order. -
I think the reason dell uses 3 different producers is:
1- to maintain price competition between the various brands
2- to not rely on just one manufacturer in case of panel shortage versus demand
It seems the Samsung gets used more often, probably because of price (and Samsung belongs to the same Bluray supporting group as Dell) and they use LG and Sharp to meet capacity demands.
But is is not proven that LG doesn't get used in certain regions. YOu can't deduct this from a 10-people feedback. We need more feedback before we can be sure. -

I am also picky when it comes to LCD panels. My 46 W2000 Sony TV was sent back, as was my Samsung LE 46 F86...Still waiting ot find an LCD that will satisfy me... -
Well after seeing my 1730 is still in pre production and my estimated shipping date is the 22nd of October I sent an Email to dell asking why my staus had not changed, is there a delay? Got a phone call back my new shipping date is 7th Nov!!! told the guy i was not happy about the delay as he had assured me that was the latest it would arrive and had insisted there would be no delays. When i asked about compansation i was told i would need to speak to customer services AFTER i had recieved my laptop. I will give them till the 29th then I'm gona cancel I can't stand to get messed about by companies and i'd rather cut my nose to spite dells face. Gona go look in the d900 lounge again, looks like i might not be a member of this lounge after all
For anyone in the UK i would not trust your shipping dates if you ordered the extreme processor as i was told that that is whats holding up my order as they have ran out!!! -

Ordered mine earlier this week... should be with me on or before the 2nd November. Spoke to my friend who works for Dell and I believe everything is there apart from my Sapphire Blue cover!
- He said they were due in on Friday evening so hopefully things will happen next week.
Spec: Extreme CPU, 4Gb RAM, 400GB HDD Raid 0, Dual 8700GT's, PhysX Card, SB Audigy Advanced, 3 year Warranty, 3 year Complete Care... Tried to get the XPS backpack but it was not available when I ordered -
Now that there are a few more, can any owners of the machine comment on the maximum battery life?
Sorry for pushing this question but I really want a user to tell me how long the battery can go on for on maximum power saving mode.
If it's miserable then I will have to drop a quick order for a vostro 1400 with a 9 cell -
I am a American and have the SHP13D9 I am happy with my scream but do not think I am a picky a some in here
-
I need to make sure my car DC Inverter is powerful enough for the 1730. Can anyone give me the wattage and amp. requirements of the 1730 power brick? Thanks.

The SHP 13C1 had no backlighting issue, but the colors were a bit dull compared with LG/Samsung and it was not as bright. Also the blacks were not as good.
No faults, just less pretty screen. Those who got the Sharp on their first system usually didt ask to change, but those who had seen the LG/Samsung usually didn't want the Sharp.
I would be interested to see how the new model looks like. -
guess everyone is enjoying their m1730
shoot once I get mine, I wont be here for a while.RS:V will be keeping me busy
-
I would love to see where my M1730 is at in Production.
I ordered it on the 6th of October and still haven't received it...
Estimated ship date has been the 29th since I've ordered itLast edited by a moderator: May 7, 2015 -
Just a quick question, i've heard that if you opt to get the physx accelerator you lose one 8700 GPU, is that true, and also is it worth gettin the physx accelerator?
-
Can someone try put their laptop in sleep/hibernate mode..
For some reason when i do i cant get the screen to come back on.. even if i reboot.. i had to go into safe mode and reinstall vid card drivers.. -
Okay, I just called the Automated Order Status line and it told me that it's still in Testing ... so at least it's built!
Testing shouldn't take that long anyway, I suppose.
Hopefully it will ship this week then! They also upgraded me to Next Business Day shipping for free for some reason, without telling me at all!
I originally got the free 3-5 day shipping when I ordered it, so that's awesome of them! -
By the way, everyone, especially XPS M1730 owners! I made a wallpaper today for my own XPS, when it comes, that I think you guys will enjoy!

Hi, i just ordered my very own M1730 and i have a question i hope people can help me out with.
hows the heating situation with the laptop when you play games?
is a cooling pad (non usb powered) or a cooling pad with usb powered best to overcome this heating problem?
i been really scared that the laptop will fry when i play games -
mr greenfingers Notebook Consultant
-
so do i need a cooling pad or anything?
how long do you play your games for?
i am thinking about 2 - 3 hours for me, and its summer here in aussieland, so i dont want to overheat it.
opinion? -
the only issue ive heard from the people who have actually gotten the m1730 is that if you get the samsung screen there is light leakage and some brightness issues ive heard nothing about heating issues, im from australia to and im sure dell wouldnt make a gaming rig that frys when you play games on it, it was bloody hot today in melbourne though so i might play games next to the air conditioner.

mr greenfingers Notebook Consultant
well it im in uk and its always cold hear lol i have not recived mine yet but have talked to a guy in japan who says it dose not overheat 2-3 hours is not bad anyway i think you will be fine but if the cooling mat gives you extra peace of mind i see nothing wrong with that
