Install most of the drivers from the windows update, then find the others in the dell web page.

Guys, my fan is running hardcore and my 1340 running hot. Everything was fine with Win7 RC1, I clean installed with 7 Professional a few day ago and this started happening. Any thoughts? What am I missing? All my drivers are up to date.

Can you download the hwmonitor and show us the temperature? in this way, we can see if it is really hot.

FYI, Dell has posted new firmware for the Seagate drives. It's at firmware 05. My Seagate drive was at FW 02.

I did notice a drop in hard drive temperature using the new firmware.

Could you elaborate on this issue some more? Dell will fix it for you, and if not they will let you return in for money back.

If you want some forum chit-chat, here goes!

I've had my xps 13 for 3-4 months now and i like it!
    Personal pros:
    - keyboard (touch, feel, type and look)
    - trackpad surface feels great
    - features (ports, card readers, powershare)
    - slick look
    personal cons:
    - fingerprints galore!
    - hybrid sli: it's a rip-off, i have better performance with it disabled :s, gpu's should have been switched: 9200 would use less energy imho
    - small trackpad
    - heat if you compare with a MB 13 incher
    details:
Coming from an XPS 1330, heat is NOT an issue with this laptop. Cooling is a lot better. Everything (except the performance part of hybrid graphics) works as expected.

what have i done so far:
    - replaced thermal paste with guide on nbr
    - fixed loose enter key
    - small, short fsb overclock with NVIDIA performance tools (works nicely with the laptop!)

    questions/issues:
In Windows 7, i noticed that 256MB of ram is hardware reserved. This would mean it's for the 9400M, but I was under the impression that it had DEDICATED ram :s
Linux is a b*tch with hybrid sli, so i'm staying with Win7 for now.
Since my thermal paste replacement.. I noticed how sucky the fan algorithm is: idle gpu temp can rise to 65-70°C (along with THRM), taking the idle cu with it, waiting imho way too long with a fan spin-up :s. Then it blows untill the temp is back around 55°C. 70°C is a lot before the fan kicks up, or is it just me?

Can you please explain in steps how you overclocked the processor or GPU ? My specs are [email protected] and I got the 9500M. I want to do a 'safe' overclock, meaning I don't want to get to see a BSOD, etc. thanks

I'm wondering if anybody has encountered a problem similar to mine..

Our company bought 3 XPS13 several weeks ago.. all of the others work out of the box except for mine... mine have the problem of no sound coming out of the speakers...

I have done the Dell Diagnostics and the speakers work fine.. it is only in Win7 that the speakers doesn't work....

i can see from the sound tray icon that there the analogue bar is moving which represents that the sound is being output by the windows.

hmm.. fyi, the front jacks are working...

Well, if you have the Performance Tools installed, there is a section relating to either the Motherboard or the CPU (both have the FSB slider bar).
    Simply put:
!WARNING! Any overclock can cause overheating, system instability and data loss. If you're worried, back everything up !END WARNING!
ALSO: There's no way to tell if your laptop's been overclocked with this method, so warranty is not an issue.

    Steps:
    - Download a stress testing app and read how to use it (one will do):
    -...
    - get a hardware monitoring program to see your system temperature
    - HWMonitor: http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php
    - Real Temp: http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/
    - Core Temp and others
    - get CPU-z to check if changes are being applied: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

    Now for the OC itself:
    - start CPU-z and HWMonitor and see that you can locate temperature (HWMonitor) and FSB reading (CPU-z)
    - start NVIDIA performance control panel-> Device settings->CPU->FSB slider
    - slide this up 1-5 MHz at a time, no more.
    - After each increase, run stress test for as long as you see fit (the longer the better of course), and be sure to monitor temps. Max allowed for Intel Core 2 Duo is 72°C core temp, so see that you don't get over that!
    - When you get a BSOD, lower your overclock and do a longer stability test.

    Advanced:
    - Because the FSB setting also affects memory speed, you would need to change memory timings (loosen) to get higher FSB speeds. But I think you'll hit way too high temps before this happens. Memory timings can be adjusted in the Memory section of the NVIDIA Device section and checked in the memory tab of CPU-z.

This is a short guide of a simple overclock which is possible on an XPS 13. I'm not responsible for any damage or other foolish stuff you've gotten yourself into. For more info, check google: "Core 2 duo overclock" and keep in mind that you can only change FSB speed and memory timings, nothing else.

PS: it might be possible to change your voltage using CPUGenie, although that would increase temps even more, so it's not recommended :)
    Hope this helps.

Could it be that the default playback device is set to HDMI instead of speakers/headphones for some mightily strange reason?
Control Panel->sound-> set default to Speakers/headphones and test it there.

    PS: latest drivers I presume?

Hello everyone, I just received my SXPS 13 yesterday and figured that I would say hello.

I got a 5.8 for the Windows Experience score (in Hybrid SLI Boost Performance mode).

    Hwmonitor temps:
    Code:
    Core#0: 41'C min: 35'C max: 45'C
    Core#1: 40'C min: 34'C max: 43'C

    NVIDIA G210M GPU: 52'C min: 47'C max: 54'C
    NVIDIA 9400M G GPU: 57'C min: 50'C max: 59'C

I have it resting on an aluminum laptop cooler (without the fans running) and I had temps in that range for most of my first night.

My vent is only blocking 1 of the slots and part of a second vent slot, but if I had to sit up straight (looking down at the screen) then I would have to angle the screen more and that would block the second vent completely and maybe more (I have the thin 1.3 mp webcam lid, and no leather..... which maybe I should have upgraded to since this computer gets smudges very quickly). I do plan on getting a new aluminum laptop cooler with a fan directly below that cpu fan and air vents so I think it should be fine, and it hasn't even been hot back there yet (I don't own any video games yet and haven't done anything stressful like compiling code or using handbrake).

Back-lit keyboard is nice, I'm still trying to get used to all the buttons being in such different places than my last computer. It's pretty difficult to type, and I keep pressing the apostrophe button instead of the enter button, and the equal button instead of backspace.

    The Touchpad could be wider.

I plan on throwing Archlinux onto this (64-bit), so I'll get back with a report on that.

So far I'm pleased with the SXPS 13..... and Windows 7 is pretty nice (not sure if I'm going to keep it with a dual boot, or go for a full install of linux since I've mostly used linux for the last 3 years). I figure as long as I have the Win7 install disk and Dell drivers disk then it doesn't matter.

What laptop/keyboard had you been using before this? I had no problem with the keyboard transition, I actually like this one because it's flat and keeps dirt out from under the keys.

It had been a 17+" inch laptop that had a numpad on the side. I'm getting used to the Dell now (I especially like the back-lit keyboard), it's nice for touch typing once I get used to the "Enter" button and the "Backspace" buttons.

I especially like the "Alt" and "Ctrl" buttons for being bigger than most keyboards, this will be good once I get linux installed on this, although I'm thinking about trying to put FreeBSD 8 on it because of the ZFS file system for SSD is supposed to be very fast.

I have an XPS 1645, so I don't know how similar these machines are. For a few days, my XPS 1645 believed there were headphones plugged in when there wasn't, so I wasn't getting any sound through the speakers. Both the Dell diagnostics and the IDT audio control panel reported that something was plugged into one of the jacks. Is this true for you?

I wish I could say what solved my problem, but I don't know. One thing you could try is to reinstall the sound drivers, then turn off the laptop, unplug it and pull out the battery for a while. That is similar to what I did before my sound started working again, but to be honest I don't know if this is what helped me.

But as long as my PC thought there were headphones plugged in, there was no way to get sound through the speakers.

    Hi!

I'm planning to buy a SXPS 1340 (4Gb RAM, P8700, G210M) for light office use and home entertainment, some light (mainly strategy) gaming.

I've read several posts from part 1&2 but couldn't find answer, so I'd like to ask for your kind help.

Does the P8700 and G210M handle GTA IV on 800x600 or 1024x768 with shadows on?

I've heard that the SXPS 1340 can't run the game even on the lowest settings possible without serious lag, but I'm confused, since I saw videos on YTube of MaBook Pro-s with 2.26 (P8400) and 9400M (slower than the G210M accodring to notebookcheck bencmarks) running GTA IV fine in 800x600, plus shadows on.

    Why would a 9400M and a P8400 perform better in a Mac than a G210M and a P8700 does in a Dell.

Does anyone have experience with this laptop running GTA IV, if so, help would be much appreciated.

Thanks again, and wish You all a Happy New Year!

nope no indication that there is a used jack... :(

actually, it also bto me on my previous unit M1230 and i sent them to singapore for repair and my friend told me that the service guy replaced the whole motherboard..

i think with the m1230 headphone jack's sensor is broken.. hm... but i'm afraid to open it up for checkup since the unit is still underwarranty.. :(

    thanks for your ideas, semblance

    Hi all,

Dell SXPS 1340 owner with the nVidia Hybrid SLI 9200/9400 GPUs.

I often connect my laptop via HDMI to my 37" TV and

If l download the latest drivers from nVidia 195.62 video playback is great, but l stop getting audio from telly and it plays back from the laptop.

If l go back to the latest nVidia drivers from the Dell site it all works fine again.

    Any suggestions?

The 195.62 drivers might not be made to support audio
    OR
Sometimes you have to tell the computer to output via HDMI instead of the speakers.

I had this problem too. I've tried several different HDMI audio drivers from nvidia with that gpu driver and the beta 195.81. I'm moved back to the 186.81 drivers and the HDMI audio works fine.

Sorry l forgot to mention in my original post that in the Sound applet in Control Panel, with 195.62 drivers, it keeps saying "not plugged in" under nVidia HDMI output".

Revert back to the latest Dell ones and all is ok again.

Is there a way of reporting it to nVidia if you are a Dell owner or would they not be interested?

@above (and beyond): if ethernet is a problem, NVIDIA has chipset drivers for our notebook (they work without issue on my 9500M GE m1340):
NVIDIA.com->download drivers->nforce->nForce 7-> 730i->OS->language->download (currently 15.49) and install. It will install SMU, ethernet and maybe HDMI driver. You can also unzip ( www.7-zip.org) the package and install the drivers seperately. Please let me know if this solves the issue!

    PS: latest BIOS I presume?

I am new to this forum and struggling between making a decision between Sony Vaio CW series and Dell Studio XPS 13 (I have got one for $750 from Microsoft store http://store.microsoft.com/microsoft/Dell-Studio-XPS-13-Alpine-White/product/557051A6 ...P8700, GRAPHICS, NVIDIA..., 1340, HDMI output.. No dedicated Video Ram and Bluetooth) ... .

But more inclined towards Sony CW Series because of heat related issues with Dell XPS 13. Also I can get dedicated Video memory and Bluetooth for almost same cost as Dell XPS13 ... Any users who have used both Studio XPS 13 and Vaio CW please share your thoughts before I can decide on whether to go for Sony Vaio and return the XPS 13 (I have not even opened the box) yet...

Please can anyone help me?? My dvd drive is still acting up, it just keeps spiting cds and dvds out. I'm desperate. I've updated the firmware which did nothing. Is my dvd drive screwed and if so how can I replace it? any input would be great, thanks!

Just chat with dell rep online and they will send a tech to replace it. Use your warranty while you can.

I'm more than happy with my 1340. With you just having the integrated 9400m, you should have no problems with heat. Neither GPU is that great at gaming and with 4GB of ram I doubt you'd miss the amount the integrated card uses. Also, bluetooth is generally extremely easy to add if you want it.

mr_bots thank you for responding back... I see that you have almost the same configuration... How much did you pay for your system, how long have you owned the system and do you have any heat related issue when placing the laptop on your lap for longer during regular use (watching movie, business use ..not game..)
