Hey everyone,
I am thinking of buying one of these. But, the longer I read the more I have the impression that there is something wrong. Look at this thread: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19320798/19652063.aspx - The XPS 13 is no longer produced in the US. The discussion indicates that this may be because of some flaws in the design.
My question, are these flaws really that serious? I am planning to buy in the Netherlands. Is the US variant the same as the European one? If so, wouldn't it be very unwise to buy an XPS 13?
Thank you -
You have already read the nightmares those other customers have gone through. I have also, experienced major problems but failed to heed the comments of others, thinking maybe these were just random problems but they are not. Do yourself a favor wait and see what comes up in the next few weeks you will be glad you did. Good Luck.

I have 4GB RAM in my 1340 but the system properties says only 3.75GB is usable. I am using Windows 7 64 bit. Is it possible to enable the last .25GB?
-
@peterf
I don't think you can...the 0.25gb is shared with the graphic card so .... can't -
What? I thought the graphic card had dedicated RAM?
In the NVIDIA control panel it says
Dedicated video memory: 256MB
System video memory: 64MB
Shared system memory: 1599MB -
I have this and have been happy with it so far, although I would not buy this laptop if I had another chance. I'm just worried that my laptop will die like some that I've seen online so I will probably renew my warranty when the time comes. The failure has been mostly because of the NVIDIA chipset, this was the problem in the previous generation (XPS m1330) as well. This laptop gets really hot so I've been careful to place it under a cooling fan. I'm not sure if an intel chipset is any better, but I haven't heard much problems with it.
Other cons aside from the heat issues: fingerprint magnet, glossy screen, small mouse pad, fairly heavy for 13", the express card slot is actually shorter than a standard slot so the thing will stick out 1/4" <--very annoying
Pros: lighted keyboard, multi-touch touch pad, dual esata/usb port, LED, pretty sleek design, fairly fast, can hackintosh, slot loaded dvd drive
for me, the cons outweight the pros. I would probably get an Asus or a mac the next time around -

+1
I too am having a good time with my XPS 1340 except for the Bluetooth adapter which failed twice but the current BT adapter seems doing fine (fingers crossed
).
Heat is acceptable as long as you don't play games for extensive hours (not not for gamers)
daily tasks: CPU 42Cto 56C, GPU 49C to 61C
Express Card slot sucks. Installed one and it looked very ugly, uninstalled the next day
-
@peterf
Yes, the 0.25 gb ram shared with the on board graphic card. It is typical. -
yup... already try that 2 driver....
its same. freeze
im restore back (restore factory, vista 64) and we'll see it is will freeze or not... -
Does anyone know what brand the Monitor\sec5443 is? Is it LED?
-
I am kind of glad I read this thread before I decided to purchase a one of these. I quickly realized that everything that I hate about my current laptop, the 1340 has.
I hate my HP because it gets too hot, makes a lot of noise, is a fingerprint magnet(though it is white so you can't really see them), and has a horrible trackpad.
All in all, I have decided to wait until Apple updates their macbooks -
I have a problem, maybe someone can help.
Bought my 1340 about 6 months ago. A month ago the palm rest and DVD unit were replaced. After that the freezes and lock-ups have almost disappeared but I have another problem.
I cannot get the sound via HDMI to my TV.
The strange thing is that on another TV it works and I tried another laptop on MY TV and then it also worked. So both, the TV and the laptop seem to be working but not with MY TV
I have all the newest drivers from DELL website installed, all BIOS updates and everything else.
Maybe someone can suggest video drivers that just maybe would cure this problem. Have tried the newest from nVidia(195.62) but they don't install correct...
Any ideas?
Aaro -
The nVidia 19X drivers have HDMI audio problems. I've tried four different ones and the audio doesn't work on any of them. Rolling back to 18X drivers fixes it for me.
-
ohh is THAT why?
for the longest time i thought something was wrong with the cable or the TV -
can some one give me another driver for video adapter ? my vga is 9500
i already use all this driver... but still not compatible (freeze)
- 195.62 from nvidia
- 8.15 from dell
- 7.15 from cd driver xps
im already use nVidia nForce serial ATA controller driver v.10.3.0.42
if i uninstall vga driver, its no freeze at all. i think it was vga driver problem is it ?
or anyone has integrated graphic driver (vga on board)?
thx for help. -
I tried older 18X drivers, 2 of them. After installing them, one did not recognize the 9200G card and the other driver stated that my hdmi sound was not connected at all. So I did not get the hdmi sound working after all. Reinstalled the dell drivers, all works except the HDMI sound of course
even the "bar" that shows the music playing is bouncing up and down but no sound in the TV... nothing is on MUTE or anything like that, just to make it clear
any other ideas, drivers I should try?? getting frustrated.
sorry for my english, not from a english speaking country
Aaro -
do your xps is freeze ???
-
it sometimes hangs for some time and apparently does "something" but I am not sure it is the XPS fault... maybe win7 is also not quite "ready".
anyway, no freezes I can blame on the video drivers I think. Everything else runs smoothly, except the sound via hdmi.

Just a FYI: My XPS runs very smooth with Windows 7 64bit except for the HDMI (haven't had time to test it yet). -
If you have time please do. I just contacted my DELL warranty person about all the problems I still have and he said that the next step is to exchange the motherboard. He ordered it for me already, thank god I don't have to wait 2-3 weeks again completely without my XPS. Hope that change helps. If not, I'm going to be insisting some replacement laptop, I've had enought already
btw I have win7 64bit also, not that smooth though
But more the reason for me to be complaining to dell about my problems.
Aaro -
I'm running 196.86 on my video cards. Saw it posted in the Video Card section a week or so ago. Dell drivers so they installed without any modding.
-
With 196.86, are you getting audio over HDMI when connected to a TV ???
-
no idea what the problem is but whenever i turn on my laptop the screen flickers forever and doesnt do anything but turn it on in safe mode is just fine.
i havent installed anything in a while. and ive turn off everthing thats turns on in msconfig. -
I guess you have a philips tv?
Atm, nvidia and philips are not hdmi compatible with the sound transfers, and therefore nvidia disabled it on philip tv's.
All according to release notes on the nvidia drivers. -
Nope, still no HDMI audio
-
Becuase It's a driver issue
I research this problem and from what I can tell is, The driver is telling windows it's connected through a DVI cord/signal thus no need for the whole audio thing ... it's very complicated to explain ( I Bearly understand myself) but if you search Nvidia forums you will understand
Nvidia driver team is at total fault for this issue -
New Chipset and BIOS for 64bit Window 7 XPS 1340 has been uploaded to the Dell site...
-
for the chipset and the card reader, did you use Dell's drivers?
thank you!
-
Got the new chipset drivers and bios running
I was actually scared to do this though ... can not have this thing brick out on me now ... lmao I got a paper to finish -
LOUSYGREATWALLGM Notebook Deity
Yep! DL all drivers from DELL.
Please feel free to ask for more details if needed.
Have fun! -
for windows 7 64bit or for vista 64bit?
which one should I use?
I'm installing win7 64bit ultimate, this isn't my first installation, but recent events (hang *cough* freeze *cough*) have lead me to come to you guys...
-
LOUSYGREATWALLGM Notebook Deity
Sorry can't recall much how was my XPS 1340 performed when I tried the Ultimate 64bit. If I remember it correctly, the reason why I switched back to Pro 64bit because the Ultimate has too many extra files. i.e., Language packs & free games but no freezing.
You can also try the latest Chipset driver, might fix the freezing.
Anyone with Ultimate wants to chime in? -
yes, the reason I'm moving from Pro to ultimate is the frozen startup/shutdown. it has been a pain two weeks ago since I went from ultimate to pro.... it has been a pain@!!!!
-
LOUSYGREATWALLGM Notebook Deity
What's your BIOS version and Chipset rev?
-
right now, I have installed (fresh, I formatted like 10min ago), BIOS A14, and Chipset A04, just downloaded from dell
-
LOUSYGREATWALLGM Notebook Deity
Did you try the older versions the ones I quoted? (haven't updated mine yet)
Chipset 2.08, A02
BIOS A11
PS: Did you install the drivers first before Windows update? -
dang... I updated first... I'll just format again, and will install pro, with the new drivers...
-
LOUSYGREATWALLGM Notebook Deity
That might be the problem. I never update Windows before installing all the hardware drivers.
Please keep us posted.
Good Luck! -
no Win7Pro iso at work
gotta wait two hours
-
LOUSYGREATWALLGM Notebook Deity
You got a PM.
-
Does anyone use the express card slot? I have a 54mm card but it doesn't seem to fit.. there only seem to be enough pins for a 34mm card.
-
LOUSYGREATWALLGM Notebook Deity
The express card slot on XPS 1340 sucks. It sticks out 1/4"
-
I figured it was a driver issue and did notice that the NVIDIA control panel says the TV is connected with DVI, not HDMI. Just amazing that NVIDIA still has yet to fix it, since it's existed in all the 19X drivers (atleast all of the one's I've tried, including the just released 197 drivers)..
-
Yeah ... the only recent driver they release were for the mobile high-end cards, no telling when they will fix this
