Well I had to cancel my existing order to add Windows 7. So you might see the system I ordered on the outlet in a week or two (unless they just send me the same one and tack on the Windows 7 voucher).

I just saw you asked what config I was going with. I haven't ordered yet, I'll probably do it tonight, but I'll be going with my same config I had before but adding the 4670 and the RGB but not the BluRay. I rarely used the BD player and don't even have any disks for it. I had no issues with the WLED screen except there was not near enough desktop for me. I'm anxious to see what the fuss is about with the RGB.

*I just realized I'm EPP qualified, my company gets the discount. I'm saving another $50 by going that route. The config I mentioned above for $1347.47. When I bought my original machine it was $1500 before tax with the WLED screen. Man, I always have to buy crap before everyone else and wind up paying in the long run. Oh well, I can't wait for my 4670 and RGB to get here. :D

yeah, now i see on the us site too:
    http://www.dell.com/content/topics/...s-7-consumer?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=anavml
when customizing the OS, there's no information about it there, but i think that's only because it's a new thing, the upgrade program is already active.
now i only have to find out if i can participate on Dell EPP, if i can't, i would have to go for the 720p screen, anyway, i will order in a few days :)
    finally.

Get the 256; the 256 is the newer generation SSD from samsung (fast, new controllers, etc), while the 128 is an older gen./design.

I dont know the exact speeds for the 256, but its freakin fast :)

how does the 320gb 7200 compare to the 128gb ssd

the 256gb is £190 more then the 128gb, thats too much

its either 256gb ssd or 1080p rgbled screen and that screen is too nice.

also how much faster is the samsung 128gb ssd then a 320gb 7200rpm?

Oh wow, i never realised it was that much; when i got the upgrade it was about $150 CDN addition to the 128GB version, so, the decision was pretty easy.

If i had to choose between the 1080p + 128SSD vs. 720p + 256SSD... i would do the first one and just upgrade the SSD when they become cheaper. With the 128SSD, you are already gaining advantages over HDD: shock proof, lower operating temp, less power use (esp. compared to 7200 rpm), etc.

    GRRRRRR!!!!

My laptop was supposed to arrive today. I was just informed by my Dell rep that my order was cancelled because the bluetooth headset that I had ordered was no longer available. My rep has resubmitted the same order without the bluetooth headset and now my delivery date is July 13th.

I've asked my rep why the hell somebody didn't call me to advise of the issue and ask if I still wanted to have the laptop shipped without the headset, to which I would have most certainly replied YES!!!

One good thing, I guess, is that since the order was resubmitted today, I should qualify for the free Windows 7 upgrade coupon (I'm awaiting confirmation on this from my rep).

Hey guys, called dell India today and enquired about windows 7 and ati 4670,the rep told me that the win 7 upgrade is available, but gpu will take around 2months - 3 months.
Is it true, that the gpu would really take such long time?
No wonder 9-cell battery still not available on Indian site,
If the 4670 gpu takes soooo loooong to make entry on Indian site, then will buy it today itself.
What you guys feel, will it take such long time?

unless you play games the 4670 is a disadvantage from my point of view. its $100(probably end up like £80-90) so its more expensive then the 3670, its not out in the uk yet so more delays :(, produces more heat(5W more power from the 3670) and less battery life.

5W makes quie a bit more heat considering the laptop only uses 90W or 85W (dont know which).
i had a T9500 in a old laptop which uses 35v and it idled around 50-55degrees while my laptop with a p8600 was about 42-45degrees and that was from 10W so 5W will have some affect.

while the 4670 easily beats the 3670 its not worth is unless you play games or use it for gpu intensive things. all its going to do make more heat and give you less battery life on top of you having to pay for it.

even the 4670 wont play new games at native and i dont think its worth $1000 as its a decent gpu to begin with and is enough for most people.
i think a lot of people are getting a 4670 for bragging rights which is stupid

    The 3670 was horrible,IMO.

I couldn't run games at lower res AND lower game settings.

The 4670 should be more than worth the $100 Dell charges.....

I am not about to do gaming on this laptop when I have a 8800 GTX in my desktop, so I'm no overly concerned I'm missing the refresh. Although if cooling design is altered I'll be angry. :)

So in general, how long does has it taken people to get their laptop, from the day they order it, to the day it shows up on their front porch? I'm leaving for a week long vacation in July and I'm trying to time it so that it won't come while I'm gone because picking up from the UPS hub is a pain...

how much space would i be left with after dell installing vis on my 128gb ssd?

and when i install windows 7 when i get it how will i delete vista off it. as on my current laptop there in a folder in C:/ thats for the old windows operating system(vista) which is taking 50gb and i cant delete.
i dont see why its there, when i install a new os, the old one sold f off.

is there any benchmarks for the 128gb samsung vs 7200rpm and maybe the 256gb ssd?

Yeah I've got a desktop with an aging 8800 GTX in it as well. It's a shuttle system so I'm thinking of ditching the 8800 GTX in favor of an HDMI based ATi card so I can use it as a multimedia box for my TV. Well maybe you guys with older SXPS 16's will be in luck if the motherboard configuration is identical (which I think it likely will be). Dell spare parts may sell you the new board (it'll probably be pricey) if you are persistent enough.

The easiest way to remove them is to get a hair dryer and point it at the stickers with high heat. It will loosen the glue and you can pull it off with little effort and residue left behind.

I got a quick question before I post my XPS Studio 16 stats. I JUST ordered my laptop about 4 weeks ago, and i got it shipped to the wrong home so I haven't actually got my hands on it yet. it has the 3670 GPU, is there ANY WAY possible to get it upgraded? Like will Dell offer an upgrade if i pay the difference? Can I lie and say the GPU is faulty? Anything? Please let me know. I can't believe I didn't see any rumors about it's release.

Please let me know at [email protected]

I'll also check back here in a day or 2. At work ATM.

Quick stats of my laptop tho

no you cant lie as they still produce 3670's and they will give you that, also they will keep a lot of 3670s in stock for repairs.

its sldered so cant be changed.

dell do not upgrade your laptop once purchased and if you try yourself you will void your warranty

This is the first thing i did after deciding to keep it. Just peel it off and use the back of the sticker to blot the sticky residue off the palmrest; should take a minute or so.

If one of you here has a few free minutes, could you please send me your start menu to [email protected]

I lost mine and it would be much appreciated, seriously everything is gone. All I need to do is copy it into the folder. If you don't know where to find it then paste this into windows explorer C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

Thanks in advance to anyone who sends it to me as I'm very much stuck here, the only other option is to do a recover from the partition seeing as I've only had it for a week

Why not just create a new profile and use that Start Menu.

i cant understand why the upgrades in the UK are soo much more then the US and why a lot of good ones are never availible.

anyone know how to get a good price in the UK?
even with 16% off are £993 my deal seems very expensive compared to the US. i need to keep it under £1000 and cant do so if i want a 256gb SSd+1080p so im having to get the 128gb SSD.

is this a good deal and is there any way to get better? i got 10% off + 6% off EPP(well, i told the rep i could order off the internet with a EPP link and he offered me 6% extra)
    P8600 (no P8700, P9600 avalible in the uk :()
    4gb ram
    128gb SSD
    vista 64bit+windows 7 upgrade
    ati 3670 (cba to get/wait for 4670)
    1080p rgb led screen
    DVD RW slot load drive
    intel 5300 wifi
    1 year warranty

Because the whole start menu is gone for all users, the actual menu thing is there but the is nothing in it, no administrative tools... nothing. I can't even get to some of the things through the control panel because they link back to the start menu

you can try to repair windows and that should fix the problem, can you get into safe mode at all? if you can and you have the menu in safe mode just do a system restore. If you can't do a repair for windows and that will fix the problem

I tried doing a system restore and it didn't fix it, my dad is coming up with all of these places the start menu could possibly have got to and then I show him the start menu folder in it's emptiness and he still doesn't believe me

Yes system restore wont work, copying others start menu, will also not work as every computer has different start menu depending on the choice of software installed. So the only solutions left are repair and re-install,Though repair should fix it.But,before repair or re-install backup c drive and then try.

I have a quick question- is the upgrade from a 5100 wireless card to a 5300 worth it? It adds another $45 to my build, and I'm wondering if the additional transfer speeds will be noticeable/worth the cash.
