why is the jump from a p8600 to t9400 so much?
most companies dont charge that much while dell are charging £190. i can get a t9800 2.8ghz processor of ebay for that much.

Has anyone got a studio xps 16 lately with a 128gb ssd?

is there any way to know which one you get(how to check which one you have?)?
if someone has got a 128gb ssd lately in the xps could they check please?

seems i checked google and samsung has stopped making last gen 90mb/70mb 128gb/256gb ssds for a few months and now make the new 220mb/200mb ssds.
these are the ones i can find it the uk now(220mbread/200mbwrite) : http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?SAM-SSD12E

You need a compatible router which makes use of the extra antenna thing to get 450 mbs; 3*3 mode. If not, it just operates at 150mbps and i assume it would be the same as the 5100.

Why is everyone having a problem with waiting??? Why would you assume so many things when it comes to spending so much money? You know July 4th sales are right around the corner? What do you want to do, order it now then cry when all the sales and additional guarantees come out in a month?

Why didn't you just wait? If you have another computer with this wonderful GPU, why push through and purchase the laptop so quickly. You are going to be crying in about a month when all the discounts and extras settle in for SXPS. Our Dell Rep told me about updates for the system that are around the corner. Don't worry, consider your tears part of the early adapter tax you volunteered to pay.

you could have used multi quote
dell is dell, they just randomly have good deals plus their site will never get you the best deals and the reps will so that sale means nothing.
plus if there is a large discount, you can cancel order and get it again on a good deal.

I have backed up all my inportant files, I don't really have anything much on it yet though because I've only had it for a bit more than a week. I made sure to back up steam though because I really hated having to wait for hl2 to download.

What is this "repair" you speak of?

Repair is advanced system restore,It is a advanced diagnostic tool, which checks system files and "repairs" broken files.
As you have not mentioned the OS,I assume it to be vista.Follow the link,it has screenshots of repairing OS with explaination.
Hope this works.Below is the link for repair of vista:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html

[If the OS is different, just google-How to repair (OS name)]

Even I had planned to stay with this 5100 card, but read alot about disconnection problems with this card.Even some ppl said that its worst then older intel wifi cards,so thought of going wid 5300 card.Checked the technical datasheet,both(5100 and 5300)have almost similiar things apart from range,450mbps wid 5300 and 300mbps wid 5100.
Anyways,as lot of the ppl are saying this card has disconnection problem,I suggest you to get the 5300 one,as the complaint rate is very less compared wid 5100.
I have also heard that 5100 card hates 64bit OS,So why take risk?

5300 Ultimate N card, intel tells that its a next generation card, has better performance, faster data transfers ie 5 times in performance and 2 times in tranfers, supports 2.4GHz range and also 5GHz range.
Coming to 5300 WLAN,I dont have much knowledge on this,It mostly doesnt have the above mentioned features :D , few ppl also say both mean same!!

Yeah I picked the 5300 WLAN for my order, hopefully it's good enough. This is what the rep told me:

Hi, what's the difference between the Intel 5300 WLAN Wireless Mini Card vs Intel 5300 Ultimate-N Half Mini Card?
    5:14:55 PM Agent BE_XPS_Rep_Alvin_D_Cruz
Ultimate N is the latest in wireless connection which gives you 40% faster and 40% wider in range. it is backwards compatible to a/b/g network. And compatible in every location as well.

Guess I'll call on Monday and have my order modified to the Ultimate N. BTW has anyone successfully modified an order with Dell yet? I don't want them canceling my order and making me re-order since the price has gone up already by about $200.

If its any consolation I have a 5100 in my dell studio 1555, samsung q210 and had one in my old msi gx720. I never suffered from any disconnections.

    I have used XP/Vista 32/ vista 64 and Win7

how many other people have bought a extended warranty?
i never had a laptop fail before and i cant see the reason in paying £220 for 3 years or £180 for 2.

how does accidental cover work? if i were to "accidentally" break my laptop a month or so before the warranty finshes, would i get a new one and if they no longer make studio 16's, a new model?

If you break the laptop even one day before warranty expiry they will replace it.In case of no manufacture then there are two options, fist one-they might replace with the working condition of the same specs.Secondly, they will provide the immediate next upgraded model
It once happened with my friend long back,he broke his laptop in an accedent, that particular model was no more existing. He got the upgraded laptop, due to the enhanced warranty. It maybe the same case even now.

You go to the Dell website, input the service tag and it verifies that you bought it on a certain date to qualify for the update. They then ship you the DVD (and may charge for shipping) once verified.

I just called Dell to try to modify my order, they said they'd have to cancel the order and re-order in order to do it so I declined. In the middle of the call I got disconnected so hopefully the agent didn't take it upon herself to cancel despite me asking her not to. I did call again and another agent verified the order wasn't canceled..but you never know about Dell.

So no luck with the intel N ultimate wifi card, thats bad.Was going through Intels "my WiFi"(guys Google it).Its amazing and this particular 5000 series have this option. One can share everything wireless and the giga range of 5000 series is most required nowadays

Yeah I'll just order it separately sometime. I contacted Dell higher education services and was assigned my own rep that I can contact anytime via e-mail. So this should make any problems I have with my order much easier to deal with in the future. I checked my order and it says, "Intel WiFi Link 5300 802.11AGN Half Mini Card" even though I picked 5300 WLAN Mini Card during the order. I guess they must've changed it somewhere along the line to the half mini card. Google search reveals this card is the ultimate N variety. I could've saved myself a lot of trouble if I checked more carefully ha.

Hey all! I ordered my 1640 last week from Dell. I was looking over my specs today and instead of showing the Radeon 4670, I am showing ATI Mobility Radeon M96XT - 1 GB. Is that some kind of code for the 4670? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Also, if this thing turns out to be a lap-melter with the T9550 (as many have warned), will upgrading the fan void my warranty?

Thanks hotfusion. I have been trying to contact ATI to confirm which market version of the 4670 this will match up to: Diamond or Visiontek. Dell's rep claimed it isn't one-to-one to either of them.

Are there any GPU clocking prgrams that work with the 3670? I tried rivatuner and all the other big ones and they didn't work.

I really want to have the option of underclocking the hell out of the graphics when I want to to gain me some more battery life albeit at the cost of 3d computing (not that I do much of it other than hl2)

I ordered just days before the 4670 was an option... kinda bums me out...

I already have my gaming desktop... so I am not going to beat myself up over it. I only have a select few games that I will actually run on the SXPS anyway.

I can't wait for people to get the new card though! Looks exciting!

6 days build time huh..not bad. What did the order originally say for your estimated ship date? Mine is saying July 10th for the ship and July 16th for receiving it which is quite awhile away.

    Original ESD was 7/10

I had some issues with my last order, so they upgraded me to NBD shipping for free as well as some other goodies... should get here 7/1 :)

I am really looking forward to the notebook, heat issues/non issues aside.

Do you guys think it worth it to get a 256 SSD from Dell now or wait a few more months to update it when it gets cheaper or higher capasity?

Im looking at cost saving right now. I don't really need a 256 right away but would like one, don't know if the price justifys it.

The 256GB SSD is already a great deal imo; take a look at what other manfuacteurs are charging, if its even offered at all.

Also, if you get it later, you will be paying retail prices and it wont be offset as part of a laptop purchase. The question is, in x months.. will you be able to pick up a 256GB SSD of equal performance, for the price of the upgrade. If there is a price difference, is that difference worth the trouble of going x months without SSD and the time to clone and swap.

I calibrated my screen yesterday with my pantone huey. It was well worth the effort. I bought the huey a year ago for my 24 inch Samsung monitor. It does an excellent job. You don't realize how far off any screen is until after you calibrate it.

I have a question, guys. I ordered my laptop last week with the 4670 and 1080p screen and I got a phone call because two orders had been placed under the same purchase ID and one had been canceled. I looked at the canceled order and it had the 1080p RGBLED screen. However, the new order (the one that is in production) has the WLED HD screen listed. I called to change the order to have the 1080p RGBLED screen and the customer service rep told me the order actually has the 1080p screen but online just doesn't have the correct configuration listed. Has anyone ever run into an issue like this?
