what sort of fps do you get on that nomoredell? are you using 1080p resolution?
-
Im really confused as to what wifi card to get. Dell tells you nothing about the difference between each of them.
Intel® 5300 WLAN Wireless-N (3x3) Mini Card
Intel 5300 Ultimate-N Half Mini Card (3x3) with MyWiFi
Which one? -
The direct number to Dell Order Status is 1-800-433-9014. Or number 3 on my speed dial

QUOTE FROM ENGADGET
These processors should carry the Core i7 brand to keep things as confusing simple as possible and would be a suitable match for a Q4 refresh of the MacBook Pro or Dell XPS laptop, for example. -
Where can I find some cheap DDR3 RAM and what kind should I get with my 1640
-
Well most of us are still just waiting for our damn laptops to show up, so nothing really to add till then.
-
I placed my order on the 6 of July and my damn computer is still in production - build stage.it's been seven days now shouldnt it be in the boxing stage by now?
-
no. I ordered mine the 29th June and I get it wednesday or tuesday. So depending on what you had put into it. It could be a while.
~2.5weeks for mine. -
People waiting for your computer, don't think about go do stuff, time goes by faster. Thats what I did and it worked for me.
-
people waiting for your computer, you'll be regreting your choice
-
And why is that?? -
I don't.... best computer I've ever owned so far.
-
Excellent argument I see the error of my ways now!
Again to quote the favorite internet meme..... "wut?" -
Dell is going to stop the production of XPS series and will focus on Allienware series. Hence beware of purchasing XPS systems !
-
Dell is stopping the XPS line but NOT the Studio XPS line. The Alienware computers will be their new "gaming" machines while the Studio XPS will be their high end multimedia machines.

i ordered a outlet scratch and dent as dell ran out of 128gb ssd's and my order had to be canceled.
few questions:
do the scratch and dent models from dell have big scratches or dents (on the screen? idm small scratches on the case but il return if they are on the screen)
how does the T9400 compare to the P8600? my outlet order has a T9400.

Does anyone know the serial # and manufacture for the Blue ray burner dell is using on the xps 1640, I tried to upgrade mine and dell wanted to charge me 585.00 plus tax. I want to buy it elsewhere and make sure it fits. I currently have the BD reader only
-
Having bought many Outlet computers, including some scratch and dent models, I've found that almost all of them had no major damage. Usually, in the case of notebook PC's, just a scratch or ding in the paint. Never any screen issues. In some cases, there was NO recognizable scratch or dent, and the item looked like new!
There are no guarantees, of course, but chances are if you don't mind a minor blemish or two, you'll be happy.
Desktop PC's, though, can run the gamut of dented and scratched-to-hell to no flaws at all.
Also, the T9400 CPU is more powerful than the P8600, as it not only is faster (2.53 vs. 2.40), but the L2 Cache is double in the T9400. You got a much better CPU in the T9400.
Enjoy. -
No, Dell Outlet specifically states in their FAQ that any scratch and dent is cosmetic, and never on the screen or in any way that would hinder performance.

does the vista install disk that dell provide do a clean install on the laptop?
and do i have to use the drivers and utilities disk to install all the drivers if it does do a clean install?
I preordered a retail copy of windows 7 E which doesnt come with a IE and im sure wont include the drivers for my laptop. so will i have to download all the win7 drivers from the dell website (once availible), store them on a usb/dvd and install them as i wont have a drivers and utilites disk for windows 7 or access to the internet (no IE or wireless drivers)?
also if i want to install the beta till then, will the vista 64bit drivers work? -
Hi Everyone - I got an XPS16 about a month and a half ago and it's been running great since it arrived. The screen is amazing, it's fast and I've had no crashes. I thought that I'd checked both the USB ports when it arrived but today I had a USB stick in one usb port and tried to plug my ipod into the other one and found that the second one doesn't work. I tried several other things in case it was the ipod wire but there's just no reaction no matter what I plug into it. I've never tried to use two at once since I got it before as I only tend to plug usb sticks, camera, ipod and phone into it. I'm beginning to wonder if I just checked the first one when it arrived and forgot to check the second so this problem could have been there before I used it.
Is this probably a hardware/assembly issue that I can't fix or could it be due to the lack of a driver? I'm really not too techie so any help would be appreciated. I'm loathed to get dell to take it in for weeks and maybe give me back one that's a lot worse when otherwise this one is working great.
-
Do both ports work individually?
-
If you mean does it work if the other one is unoccupied then no; the first port works whether there is something in the second one or not and the second doesn't work whether the first one is occupied or unoccupied. If you meant something else excuse my ignorance. Thanks for any help.
-
No no that is exactly what I meant. I would call that a defective port and call dell.
-
That's what I thought you might say but was hoping you wouldn't! For such a problem would they repair the laptop I have and give it back to me or might I get a completely different reconditioned one? I'm just reluctant to give up a laptop that's working so well and doesn't have a blemish on it to end up getting one back that may have a lot worse wrong with it than a defective usb port. I guess I'm just worried because I've heard such horror stories plus I'm assuming it might be away for a few weeks - all very annoying
Thanks for your help.
-
I am uncertain what they would do, me personally would get a tech sent to look at it, and let him figure it out. No way i would ship my laptop anywhere for just a bad port make them come to you.
-
I don't know how Dell warranty works in Scotland but in the US, Dell will send a tech to your house along with a new motherboard to fix the issue. Contact them, explain the problem and ask that a tech come to your house to resolve the issue. -
I just got my XPS 16 today, and I love it!
Just wondered if there's any software that allows you to control the fans? I used to love havign the ability to do it on my inspiron 9400 using i8kfangui.
I tried i8kfangui on the XPS 16, and it all works ok except for the fans...it causes the laptop to freeze up every few seconds if i enable the fans.
Would also love to know the best graphics drivers for this..I've come for an nVidia 9400, so know nothing about Ati...I'm trying to play GTA4 but even on low settings it struggles... -
I have a quick question about the power socket on the SXPS 16 for anyone who owns one. Both my ac adapter and power socket on the notebook work fine. However it seems that the cord will slide out of the socket extremely easily. Often I will be browsing around and will have a low battery warning popup only to discover the cord has come partially or fully out. On several other laptops I own ( a few of which are also dell ) the cord seems to sort of lock in when you push it in far enough... With the SXPS 16 it does not do this. Is this normal or should I contact dell support about it? If I do have to call dell will they have to replace the whole motherboard or just the power supply? Thanks for any and all help/responses!
-
Hey guys I just received my new SXPS yesterday and it does gets very hot! I already have the A08 BIOS and don't know what else to do, it gets specially hot under the mouse pad, any suggestions?
-
hey guys, im about to buy the sxps 16. im wondering whether i should get the hd4670 upgrade for the extra $120cad. is it worth it? im not a huge gamer, but i have seen that the 3670 can half-decently run crysis, so it seems like all i need.
also, how is the 720p screen. i know the 1080p is supposedly amazing. but if i dont have the extra $300 bucks, will the 720p screen be fine??
thanks. -
Well if your a gamer, getting extra overhead is never a bad thing... remember upgrading a laptop is nigh impossible for certain things somestimes so getting the best you can now if possible would be in your best interests.
-
Right... looks like my Dell journey has reached its end.
Eventually had a manager on the phone who said they would replace my whole system and would phone me back.
Week later, nothing.
Phone back, they apologise, say they will phone me back in 2 hours.
2 weeks later, nothing.
Phone back, they say sorry and then refuse to offer me a new system and only offer me a refund.
Tossers.
So I took the refund. A shame too because I love the machine but a laptop with a temperamental wireless card is like having a mobile phone that only works plugged in to a phone line.
Avoid the 5100 like the plague. -
thanks, i think ill go in for the better gc. what about the screen? i read a post in one of these threads saying the 720p screen is garbage. is this true?
-
the 720p isnt garbage, its good compared to other laptop.
but when put side to side with the rgb led it does look like garbage. -
I got my XPS from the UK Dell Outlet and was under the impression that the 1yr warranty that comes with Outlet machines is in-house only therefore I'd have to send it away to them; I've had a look at my order statement again and it says "1yr Premium Warranty Support" - if anyone else who has had an Outlet machine can confirm what this actually means I'd be grateful. Obviously if they would send a technician out I'd be more than happy but if it has to be sent away I'm pretty apprehensive since apart from the usb port it's working perfectly. Thanks. -
Why don't you just phone Dell and see what they say? -
all xps support is 24x in home.
I ordered a laptop from the dell outlet but dell said their was no direct number to any outlet sales group and i couldnt add the warranty online so i had to buy it with the standard 1 yr warranty.
does anyone know how much the warranty for the studio xps 16 costs after purchase in £?
https://support.euro.dell.com/suppo...rt/my_systems_info/en/details?c=uk&l=en&s=gen -
what do you get with the tv tuner in the studio xps 16?
iv ordered 1 from the outlet and want to make sure i get everything(ariel?) -
How easily does the glossy palrest scoff/scratch? Although I'm getting a laptop this November (for Windows 7 and the i7-based Core 2s no doubt), doing a little research early.
-
Mine has this same problem. I had a 9300 before and I never had this problem, but then again it was in the back of the laptop and not on the side. I have found when its on a table and I move it just a little to the left the power plug pulls out and after 1 cm of moving the power has been disconnected and unless the screen brightness differs I don't really notice it for a while.
I actually must have done it a couple of days ago until it was down to about 20% and then I put it to sleep for all night. When I woke it up in the morning the battery was at 4% and at first I wasn't sure why until I started noticing that it comes unplugged a lot. -
So, is this thread going to die with the SXPS 1640 + 4670 thread up and going? The 3670 will eventually be phased out and there will be no more new users, although, they would still be 1640 users.
-
Only time will tell.

I have the integrated DVB-T tuner and I was unable to find channels when searching in Windows Media Center. Using the latest drivers from Dell website did not help either.
What I did though was install Hauppage WinTV 7 and I was able to find all channels with it, however I also installed the drivers on the Hauppage WinTV 7 CD. Windows Media Center still doesn't find any channels. Hope this helps other people with the same problem. -
Has anyone figured out how to restore the volume graphic after a Win7 install?
-
now are all the channels free?
