I ordered the Edge-to-Edge FullHD Widescreen 16.0 inch RGBLED LCD (1920x1080) with item number [320-7329] .
My confirmation email got me the [320-8190] Premium FHD WLED Display Obsidian Black. I am worried that the LCD is not RGBLED as i chosed.

Shall i cancel the order or wait until it is shipped to me without the screen that i chosed .... Kindly someone help me on solving this.

I emailed Dell and they replied by the following :
"I have reviewed your order details and see that all the order of [320-7329] will not be processed due to illegal configuration. Please be informed that all the items have been replaced with [320-8190]".
---- what can i do now kindly feedback ----

I ordered my Studio XPS 16 yesterday...normally how long does it take to build/ship? In the email I got from the Dell rep it said estimated delivery date is August 12th...that's a long time! Is it because I have the 5 day shipping option chosen?

    BTW here are the specs:
    C2D T9550 (2.66GHz)
    4GB DDR3 RAM
    1080p RGBLED LCD screen
ATI Radeon HD 3670 512MB graphics (would have preferred nvidia, but oh well)
    500GB 7200RPM HDD
    6cell + 9 cell battery
    3 year warranty + onsite

All totaled, it came to about $1750 after discounts (educational discount plus promo..saved about $400).

Once I get it, I don't need any of the bloatware. Is it safe to install Windows 7 on it?

Is it safe not to install Win7? It is much better than vista and is 100% compatible with the 1640 ;)

I have been using Windows 7 for the past 3 weeks and it has been working great, in fact some things have been working better. But I have lost the Dell Webcam central setup. Does anyone know where I can get it?

Hi I have been reading these threads for the past 3 weeks or so and i finally decided to register xD

My studio xps 16 was shipped 7/26/2009. I live in Vancouver so I was wondering how long it would take to arrive here. On the purolator it only says In Transit in U.S. -U.S.A. GROUND LINEHAUL. Is this normal?

    ~Thanks.

I would like to know how to get the webcam software as well since I put W7 on it right away. I have the facial recognition software which did not come with the laptop.

    Things I have noticed:
USB plugs are very tight and hard to plug into
Powershare USB does not charge my iPhone 3G
No support for drivers for the 4670 on Dell or resource CD

USB plugs being tight are a good thing on a mobile computer
Powershare must be enabled in the BIOS
you should mobilitymod the newest ATI drivers anyway, but you can install the other dell drivers anyway (the ones for the 3670). they are the same thing.

People, I will be updating to Windows 7 Tomorrow. Do I need to get the driver downloads before I restore? I know I will need the wifi 5300 card driver I believe in order to get the internet? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Or will the Drivers and utilities cd work on windows 7?

I removed all partitions except the first tiny one that contains the dell diagnostics. As long as you have the vista reinstall dvd, drivers, and applications you don't need the restore partition.

I emailed Dell and they replied by the following :

I ordered my SXPS with the RBGLED screen, and on my confirmation email it listed both for some reason.

    (320-7329) 1 16.0 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p FullHD RGBLED LCD W/2.0 MP, XPS 1640

(320-7618) 1 Premium HD WLED Display Obsidian Black, Leather 2.0 MP Webcam

But I think that maybe its just an error in the email, and it won't be shipped to you that way. When I was ordering it over the phone, I had the rep repeat back to me all the components I ordered to double check, and he said the RGBLED screen.

you might want to remove your email or you will need to close the account once it gets in the search engines due to spam. Also never post your personal stuff like order number and purchase ID and your name anywhere on the internet

I just got the XPS 1640 and was wondering if the battery would charge if I leave the computer off and just leave it connected to the power adapter or would I have to turn on my computer to let the battery charge???? If I don't need to turn the computer on...is it fully charged when the XPS sign at the side stops glowing white...and did you guys charge it for 12 hours the first time????

The XPS is no different from any other laptop. It will charge when it's turned off. No, i didn't charge it for 12 hours either, I just plugged it in and started it up.

I sold my SXPS to purchase a new one with the 4670, so I can't look. But from what I remember the lights were white unless the battery got to a certain percentage and then they turned red/orange. I don't know if they stayed that color when plugged in.

The adapter light stays blue as long as it(the adapter) is connected to a power source. The white light at the bottom of the screen turns orange when the battery reaches a certain critical level. It blinks while white when the laptop is in sleep mode.

    Go here:

    http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx

Input your laptop type or service tag number. Then download quickset and the Synaptics driver.

That's what quickset does I believe. I never installed it with Win 7 because it always minimized my games if I changed the volume in the middle of a game so I can't even tell you if it works with Win 7.

From what I have read is that the only thing the quickset program doesn't do in Windows 7 is display the volume display. On my copy it doesn't work but when I change the screen brightness or keyboard brightness I get an overlay. But somewhere I read there is a fix or they are working on a fix for the volume problem in Windows 7.

You need to set the resolution to 16:9 or widescreen.

I don't think there is a solution for this problem. With my Inspiron 9300 there was a setting in the bios that would fix this. One option would stretch lower resolutions to fill the screen and the other would put black bars around the image so it would stay sharp but still be very small.
I haven't seen an option in the bios to control this.

Also does anyone have a fix for the display brightness when coming out of sleeping? If I set my display brightness to about 50%, make it go to sleep and then wake it up it comes on at 100% brightness. But if I lower the brightness once it drops it down to 50% were it should have been.

I have a question about my XPS1640 that is annoying me too much,
My Order Details in Dell Website list the following:
    (320-8190) Premium FHD WLED Display

While my original Shoping Cart That i Purchased list the following:
(320-7329) Edge-to-Edge FullHD WideScreen 16.0 inch RGBLED LCD

My order status is now under production and it was too late for me to cancel the order,My question is does the Premium FHD WLED really the same as what i purchased which is RGBLED LCD or no.
    Thanks in advance

I ordered mine about a week back. On my quote it said Premium FHD, but the sales rep told me that it was the RGBLED screen, and once i got my invoice, it said RGBLED. However, for me both had the exact same p[art number. Your two are different so I'm not sure.

Mine also said Premium FHD WLED Display but I ordered a RGBLED. Look for a line item that says this:

This was also in my order. So I would imagine it would appear in yours as well.

Dear likearaptor ,i have the RGBLED line you mentioned in 2 places ,the first place is in dell Acknowledged email that was first sent to me from dell right after purchasing and the shoping cart during purchase that i printed from the screen of my computer.
The issue is they send me after one day a confirmation email with Premium FHD WLED Display and also if i log onto My order status online i found it also indicates Premium FHD WLED Display . I am worried that they might ship to me another screen than the RGBLED that i purchased wich is cheaper by 250 US Dollars. can you please mention where it is shown correct (RGBLED) and where it is shown wrong (WLED) in your case.

    Timoz73,

When I check the order status on Dell's website I show these two line items:

They both showed up in the confirmation email they sent me as well. Let me know if you have any other questions

Thank you likearaptor for your quick response ,in fact my case differ from you in that they show only one line with WLED in the order status on Dell's website although i ordered the RGBLED. can you contact a technical man in dell explaining to him my exact case ,I know it is too exageration for me to ask you this but i am away from the States and i telephoned customer care several times using international calling and they kept holding me on the waiting and at the end they reply with nothing important to explain why this happens. I am asking you to do this favour for me to ask if the Premium FHD [320-8190] is really the same as the RGBLED [320-7329] or do they really RGBLD.
I am so Thankful to you whether you did this or not
    Yours sincerely . . . . . .

It should be on a DVD/CD that came with your machine.
