    Honestly cannot say.
Dell's prices on the site are unreliable anyway. Call Dell and talk to a salesperson. He'll be able to help you.

I've been lurking on this thread for a while waiting for any news of the availability of the HD 5730 on the Studio XPS 16 in the UK. However, i've just remembered that I was assigned an account manager after placing a previous order some months ago. I've sent an email off to him asking if he knows when the HD 5730 will be available on UK models and now just waiting for a reply.

I've always found Dell's sales reps to be ill-informed, and have little to no knowledge of the components that go into making their machines. But they're salesmen - they just say what they think you want to hear.

    I gave in!!! I caved!!!!

I ordered the RGBLED i5 with the 4670!! Shame on me for not waiting for the 5370! I am ashamed of myself but I could not hold out any longer using this Tosh (borrowed from my mum).

Delivery eta 27th, so perhaps during this time Dell change to the 5730 and I get a free upgrade, but I'm not counting on it.

Can't blame you my friend. I am seriously thinking of placing an order tonight as I too am fed up of waiting for Dell Euro to pull their finger out. Although I personally can't afford it, you won't regret getting the RGBLED display - it's stunning.

Here's a decent YouTube review of the XPS 16 (Part 1 of 4)

I know how you feel dude,.

To tie me over, I ordered a Latitude 4300 (core 2duo 2.4) from Dell US to be delivered to California to my cousin. When I put in the order on sunday it was showing me a delivery date of today (13th july) if i paid an extra $69. Whole price was coming in at about £540 with 3yrs support which is very good!

Guess what, For a package thats was supposed to be delivered today, its still showing thats its still in production ! :(

I called Dell US to find out whats happening an the agent seemed suprised as well that it should be taking so long especially after paying additional $69 and mentioned delivery date at checkout. she said she would lodge a request to production dept to find out whats going on and it might take 24-48hr to get any reply!.

I'm not pleased at all. If I get some form of confirmation it will be delivered by friday they I wil try n get my $69 back. If its not going to be delivered at all by then I might ask for my whole money back cos the notebook will be of no use to me if my cousin cannot bring it with her this weekend :(

I am so not in a good mood at all..... wont be in this position if 5730 was on our shore :(

You guys DO know your 99% likely to still get a laptop that has excessive amounts of heat AND throttles with the 5730 right? I'd rather have a RGB LED+4670 at this point than a WLED+5730.

I tell you what, if I could get a refund for the XPS 16 for what it is worth and not the 600 I paid in the first place.. I would def. buy a diff. laptop.....

I just feel that Dell charges a premium for this model and yet seems to not put any real thought or care into it and it shows when problems like throttling have been here since day one when this laptop came out over a year ago.

the throttling issue is due to insufficient power from the 90w power supply. As for the heating, i generally dont use it on my lap.

I'll post the link re the power issue next time and I'll let you know how i get on when it arrives eta 27th july.

If you look around there are many 5730 owners experiencing the same problems...problems that are NOT gpu related, but CPU related. The 5730 might use less power than the 4670, and the 130w adapter might supply more power than the 90w..but regardless there still isn't enough juice for the i7's under load which is ridiculous.

Luckily I picked the i5 as I don't think I need the i7's processor capabilities as much as need the 4 hours with the extended battery.

    Fingers crossed its enough.

Yours eagerly looking forward to the XPS 16 despite not having the 5370 (damn blast and hate you Michael Dell).

Have a good night everybody.

Could the 5730 be introduced soonish, mainly because the 'Clearance' and discounts on 565v graphics card laptops are all labelled as expiring today, 14/07/10?

Don't count on it. Dell have a habit of renewing their offers, extending them beyond the original expiry date and running them for a further week or so. So, just because it says they will expire today, doesn't mean they actually will. On the other hand, I could be wrong this time...

I'm not sure who to believe, there is a video with pretty concrete proof (for my novice eyes and ears) that the setup seems to work pretty well... he claims he gets no throttling during gaming either.

I was going to say the same. Dell's special offer that ends today, also happens to run tomorrow and then end tomorrow again, its normally just a marketing / sales ploy.

All the UK models come with the larger 130W AC power supply.

    The offer could continue indefinately...

^ looks like it is continuing for the near future :(

Why do UK laptops suck so much, between Dell and HP neither are offering "premium" spec which is in line with the US models :( :(

Concerned. I was going to buy a Dell XPS 16 today but started reading all this info in regards to the throttling and temp issues. I was going to get the Studio as I could up the specs to something similar but with them both being on par with price I decided with the XPS.

But now I am holding off.

I was going with the WLED screen, the Intel i7-840 and the ATI 5730. It seemingly comes with the 130W brick but will I be seeing these same issues with the notebook under 'stress'? If I downgrade the processor (as have no option with the GPU), will this help resolve plus save me $500.

Shame really. Was going overseas at the end of this month so could have saved even more money ...

Just got new SXPS 1645 (no replacement, no fixes... first time getting one.)

    Comes with 130 brick,

    stats=
    9-cell battery
    i7 720qm
    500gb @ 7200
    8GB Ram
    WLED 1080p
    5730

I wonder to myself if how severely the fully opened monitor covers the vent on the back contributes to this heat problem. I'm pretty nervous, I don't want to have to return this and get a new laptop. My Dell Vostro 1500 worked perfectly for all 2.5 years I've had it, aside from some user errors.

Haven't even started it up yet, will install all the jazz (HWMonitor, CPU-Z etc.) once I figure it all out and post logs.

Still not had a reply back, so i'm guessing I probably won't. It's getting really tempting just to get the Studio XPS without the 5730, but i'll probably regret it in the end.

Like stunji, i'm also upgrading from a Vostro 1500. Over the years though it's taken a few too many knocks, drink spillages etc and will completely freeze every so often - hence why i'm looking to replace it with a shiny new Studio XPS.

Hehe, I just need to upgrade. I'm a concept artist and do very intensive things in photoshop and 3d, as well as needing to occasionally satisfy my inner gamer. The 2.0 ghz core 2 and 2gigs of ram in my Vostro just wasn't cutting it anymore :\ and the screen wasn't exactly stellar. It's still useful though, I plan to keep it around. Surprisingly, it hardly ever has crashed on me, aside from a BSOD 7 months ago when I left it running on my bed too long, like an idiot.

You will have to let me know how this one fairs in regards to the throttling and heat issues. Myself, I am replacing my 3yr old Dell Inspiron which hasn't missed a beat. The only reason to upgrade, hinges are getting a bit worn but apart from that its ticking along like clockwork.

So far the fan is running quite a bit. It switches between what seems like idle, medium, and high, but it's most frequently at 'medium'. The whole thing is pretty warm with just Steam downloading something, using google chat and a couple (less than 5) FF windows open. Still DLing HWmonitor, but so far CPU-Z, as far as I can see, indicates I'm not throttling. Once Mass Effect finishes downloading from steam, I'll see how that fares. It's been on for about a solid hour btw.

Core temps specifically are all below 65 except 1 which is 69 (those are max temps too) while idly surfing the web, vid chatting, and downloading ME from Steam.

    Edit 2:

    Alright,
    -Vid chatting through gmail chat
    -Downloading ME from Steam
    -Watching 30 Rock on Netflix
-running a light-ish painting program to it's limits (Artrage 3 Studio)

    And temps are average!
Assembly temp is a stable 43C, Core temps hover between 60 and 70. I need to get GPU-Z to determine how the 5730 is holding up though.

The cores seem to be running quite hot considering nothing extraordinary. General rule of thumb is that the CPU temp will be close to the lowest core temp but any core above 65 DegC is not ideal.

Others would be able to better comment than I however.

    Thanks for advising.

You say nothing extraordinary, but- not being an expert- I'd think vidchatting and netflix live streaming and running a painting program- simultaneously- seems pretty intense given about 66-67 degree average. It's not high end gaming, to be sure, but the programs like photoshop and artrage etc. I am told tend to be heavier on CPU than GPU. When it's idle (now) it's down around 63 as average (running a quicktime video tutorial, 4 FF tabs, downloading Oblivion off steam, no vidchatting)

I presumed the painting program was not running. Thought the second edit was like a second scenario. My apologies.

And you're right. Are you a happy customer? You may know the answer to this better once running Oblivion.

I will run Oblivion tomorrow, it's still downloading and I need to get to bad.

The first 25 or so minutes of mass effect 1 on med-high settings at native (1920x1080 res) ran with CPU at an avg of 73-74, never went over 76, and not a single throttle in sight. So far? I'm extremely happy. Although, while I am a gamer, I don't care to have my graphics pumped out the wazoo. I'm okay with sacrificing a little bit (even if I shouldn't have to.) I'll let you guys know how oblivion runs tomorrow or saturday.

Also, it came installed with BIOS A09, and I intend to stick with it unless something goes wrong. It seems to be working pretty well. Now that ME has stopped temps are back down to 60-61 :)

Also, just to give most info as possible- I have an old logitech USB mouse that I'm using, and this screen is on half-brightness or less. my old vostro 1500's screen's brightest setting is less bright than this thing's halfway point! I'm sure RGBLED is nice and all, but if it contributes to throttling I'm pretty okay with the WLED.

Also of note, at work I have a monitor calibrated by a SpyderPro 3 etc. etc. system, and this setup is actually VERY close to that monitor. Being an artist by trade, this impresses me! (although, I'm also not as high maintenance as most photo, video, or graphic designers tend to be when it comes to color and gamut, but I am a bit moreso than average gamers.)

    So, an update from Belgium:

After reading this topic, I decided to wait with ordering my Dell Studio XPS 16 because of the graphics card. The heat isn't that much of a problem, my current laptop, Dell Vostro 1500, gets very warm as well, so this won't form a problem, I don't keep it on my lap anyhow.

So, I decided to chat with Dell today, through their webpage, asking if tehre was any news of the graphics card upgrade for Belgium.
They WILL upgrade it and it should arrive in 2 WEEKS in The Netherlands.
I asked if it was a guess or not, they said it was sure to arrive in 2 weeks. I'm not sure which graphics card they will put in, but I'm fairly certain it'll be the current one from the USA.

So ye, I'm going to wait another 2 weeks before I'll order mine.

Thanks Saryon, also waiting for the updated specs in Belgium here. I had a chat with a representative last week and they couldn't give me an update. I'm glad you did. I can wait a little longer.

My ability to wait is someone diminished by the fact that am flying to Malaysia in 2 weeks. So by waiting I am sacrificing a potential saving of 10%. So my decision my rest on stunji as he basically has the laptop I am thinking of buying barring the 8GB RAM (will stick with 6GB unless feeling lavish).

I noticed the same thing when I was about to order my XPS 16 yesterday. I just chatted with Dell and they said no information on a coming update. However, Netherlands and Belgium are Germany's neighbours so I dtill hope there will be something in the coming two weeks.

It's still kind of a hard choice to wait or not: the i7 820QM has a 249€ discount on the German website right now, which makes it quite affordable. However, this is limited to Jul 21. I am not sure whether to wait for a possible Radeon 5730 update and then go for the i7 720QM OR order now and go for the weaker graphic card.

The XPS 16 should be kind of a desktop replacement to me. My old XPS 1330 has been going well for three years, but is having issues recently. Don't think it will 'survive' much longer. I'm kind of tempted to buy it now but I'd like some certainty on the graphic card update by Dell instead of "sorry, no information...". Anyone from Germany who has more positive news?
Also, I'll fly home from China to Germany on Aug 3 and would like to have it by then... Could be impossible! :-(

The discount keeps refreshing every now and then. If it's gone by the time the graphics card is there, just wait another week and it'll be refreshed.
Those discounts go on and off all the time. Worst thing that could happen is that you have to wait another week or two.

In my case, I'm not in a hurry. The sooner, the better, yes, but not at the cost of a sucky graphics card :D

And well, if The Netherlands get it, I can order it from there if needed, but I'm sure it'll be for whole Europe then.

The 565v is only a renamed 4670 and not a radeon mobility 5000 card.

Though from what I understand it runs cooler and (seems) like it may have been a smart step toward solving the throttling problem.

The 5730 runs cooler, but not the 565v. It's only a new name for a old hardware.

    LOL I am from Malaysia.

I am thinking of buying the Dell XPS 16 with i5 and HD5730.
Waiting for any discounts or refreshes (just today the base HD 4670 got refreshed to HD 565v which is the same but yeah).

Should I get i5-520 since its a little more than i5-450? Or is a i5-450 and Nvidia GT 335M with USB3.0 and 1366x768 14" Asus a better deal (about 30% cheaper with respect to XPS 16)?

They wouldn't give me much discount. It is quite expensive in comparison to most other laptops on the market. However it is still cheaper than my previous laptop (now returned).

Anyone can post images/screens of the XPS 16? Read somewhere that the ugly side hinges on the bottom of the monitor on both sides has been removed?

What sort of function keys are there? To switch off screen/display, and to switch off touchpad?

How about screenshots of XPS16 CPU and GPU temperatures?

I wonder if they're running down stock in preparation for launching models with the 5730?

    Here's hoping.

Nearly a week on and still only i5 processors available (excluding the i7-620 M, which is a high-end dual core). Strangely, you can still configure a standard Studio laptop with quad core processors, so it's not like their stocks have depleted.

Does anyone else receive a driver warning in Starcraft 2 with the 5730? It worries me...

You can now order the "standard" studio 17 with i7 740 QM's (granted you have to look), so maybe they are changing to the newer quads and don't have the parts (the studio 17 with quads are still using the 4670 too!). Shortage of 5650/5730s from AMD/ATI perhaps?
