I ordered a 4/9 cell and received 2 9 cells (this is what they do as the 4 is a no go. I called in stating i wanted the 6 and they told me they couldnt change just one because the 2 9s are a package dal...so they cut me a 200 break to buy another 6.. Big Smiles!!!
That brought my system down to what it is below....

Unfortunantly, my M1330 also has the whine. Will check with Dell tomorrow if I can get an replacement machine. Besides that, it has no other flaws that I can see at the moment.
A rather funny thing with my M1330 is that the whining sound disappear when I connect a USB hub to the machine (right side port). If I disable the USB ports in BIOS, the sound is still there. Strange and at the same time funny...

careful with the new RMCLOCK 2.3.0 beta, it has a new "Disable C4" option, which easily shuts off the whine, but also crashes my M1330
anyone tried this and used it successfully?
i had to hold the power button to shut it off -
-
Ok....I just listed my experience so others can utilize it as they wish. If it works for them, it was a successful post wasn't it??
Its a tool, nothing more....another thing one can utilize to help their end result.
And......plenty of my ideas such as this have resulted in big thank you pm's and thread inclusions from US purchasers. -
Yeah, as I stated in my review, I got the 6 and 9 cell as well, whereas I ordered the 4 and 9 cell. Dell Canada.

Talked with XPS Support in Europe a few minutes ago, told my case and the technician was helpful - he was going to look into my case and get back to me. Atleast he didn't think I was hearing things

ok my replacement is on back order. My rep wouldn't tell me what stage my order is on even when I requested it but she just said
The XPS systems are currently on backorder. You should receive your system around September 17th or 18th.
Is it worth waiting this long for a system that has a 50% chance of cpu whine? -
I just looked at the inspiron forum where there is a similar poll...same same 50% chance.
It really depends on how much you can wait for the system. It will arrive sooner than she says as it is an exchange...give it a few weeks. -
So some people reporting that they have no CPU whine might just not be able to hear it. -
You could be right.. The noise affects different people different ways. If the noise were barely audibe, I would still here it because it is a pitch that just gets in no matter how loud.
Myself, I believe the 50% to be an accurate reflection and if you look further at my poll, 30% state system had no probs. I wold suspect a few of those have the noise but it doesnt affect them. -
What should I do? I really want the white one sooooooo bad. It is very important to me, but the replacements are only red and black. So you think if I send it to the depot they will fix the whine?
-

Direct Girl...you'lle owe me a hug...
Order the replacement.
If it doesnt squeal, call Dell back.
Explain to them that you want to keep your monitor with the limited edition white colour.
They will send a guy next day to replace the cover alone or whole monitor.
So...you will still have the best...
PS. "They will do this"
Edit: Be careful when you start to let them tackle the innards of your machine (CPU) as it is so new. The tech may have never done this on this machine before... They will prob start with your motherboard before the CPU along with the fan and heatsink. You will end up with them coming time and time again.
For now, I would take this little step, replacement with hope and call for the lid switch. -
I asked him about the training process for new laptops. They apparently have some sort of online certification for each model, but with enough experience, they can tackle most systems without needing much training at all. Most of the layout and design of the innards are pretty standard throughout many laptops and the disassembly process is pretty logical. -
Good Idea. I will ask for that. Thanks so much! HUG! -
is there a cure for the whine besides getting a replacement? i cant be bothered replacing and waiting AGAIN. i will be pretty sure the next one will have it.
-
The whine sometimes dissipates on its own; I have heard of a few cases as such.
-
Do you think a clean install of vista would get rid of the whine?
-
-
I'm trying to use the online customer service chat to ask for a replacement but it's always busy. Will keep trying.
-
Just call them
Might wanna call XPS tech support first, they are faster to answer and then just ask them to transfer to Customer Care, and they'll find someone for you on the spot
-
Sigh... I just called them and they are willing to send me a replacement but it will take 25 business days. Let's hope the new one doesn't whine or I'll whine to Dell. (I'll be moving next week, let's hope they send it to the right address...)
I want to thank everyone for encouraging me to speak up on the phone. I feel more confident now. -
25 business days? It's like 5 weeks, more than a month.... You definitely won't be able to return it after that, so keep that in mind
-
You mean I have to return my original one before my laptop arrives?
-
No, I meant you won't be able to return both for a refund... WHen replacement comes, it'll have all the instructions and prepaid shipping label to send one of them back (it doesn't have to be the replacement
)
-
what if the new one also has the cpu whine?
-
That's what I'm saying... if the replacement indeed comes over a month later, it'll be to late to demand a refund. You'll be stuck dealing with XPS support over this issue
-
what do you suggest me to do?
-
Well, there's a chance ur replacement will come within ur original 21 days return period. If it doesn't, you can still try to raise hell and ask for another replacement if the first one does not satisfy ur requirements. So it's really up to u, whether u r willing to invest time and effort into making Dell to do right by ur books.
-
Do what you think is right... Ide go for the replacement before its too late. If yopu want the refund, you have to push for that now.
-
I have already ordered a replacement. Let's hope the new one is perfect...
-
-
I want to cry. This is my first Dell purchase and first year of grad school too. I have so many things to worry about and this Dell laptop just adds another problem to my long list of problems.
-
-
I always enjoy reading the suggestions where everyone is gonna move to another laptop....
like the... Mac - Nope same issue;
like the... Sony - Nope Documented same issue
like the... HP - Yuk they have it worse than the rest
I agree with Zetto totally on one point (Hope you were seated when you read that Zetto) and that that you need to find a system you are happy with.
I often wonder how this site has affected the consumer and how many would never have noticed or thought the whine was just a normal part of the laptop.
Its everywhere... -
Yea..I'm searching for another laptop now...when I asked for replacement, the rep told me there's backorder of 20days ...I can't wait that long and I don't want to worry about another whine in the replacement..arrg...Dell was my first laptop purchase too..
-
AHHH, maybe I should do the same too.
It really makes me think the issue is really related to the new duo 2 core. Intel probably screwed up this one. Does it more likely occur in a particular chip like the T7100 (mine is a T7100). Do the T7300/T7500 owners have the same problem in their m1330? -
What's SZ650. Is it expensive? -
What does Dell do with the returned replacements?
-
-
Not true about the Core 2 Duo's at fault.
My XPS Gen2, which was a 2Ghz Pentium M, had a whine. BUT, my XPS M170, which had a 2.26 PM, did not.....
I really couldn't tell ya what the problem is, but it has been a problem before the entire "Core" line of procs came out. -
-
Since they are now sending me a replacement, do you think they will let me add the nvidia card to the replacement for $100? My original one doesn't have one.
-
No...they cannot change your configuration on replacement
-
Flamenko: Do you by chance have any links to reports of CPU whine on AMD systems?
I found a decent little HP 14.1in system with an AMD Turion X2 in it. It's no M1330, but for $650 it will do fine for a portable Linux system.
But I would like to research the AMD CPU whine before hand, and I can not find any cases of it online. The cases I find that are close sound like other issues to me like power/battery problems.
Any help would be great. -
When I first did a background on this noise months ago, I had found a few cases but i just dug hard and couldnt find anything.
I didn't find AMD with the same problems as other laptop manufacturers where the sound became very prominent in certain systems (Pavilion, M1210, M1330).
Hope that helps. -
Have you guys noticed they aren't offering the 7300 now? Might be temporary... Might also be a frequent whiner?
