HIGH PITCH SQUEAL SOLVED BY FLAMENKO!!!

EDIT:
I just tried RMCLOCK 2.30 FINAL release, and used DISABLE C4 state, and it works! NO WHINY SOUND, no performance decrease as far as i know! -
Ive used this before and tested right up to the most current version. It still reduces battery life significantly which is why I have never suggested it.
Because of the background which got me here, squealing M1210...I continuously watch for and try new solutions; none are fair to anyone who just bought a new computer as of yet.
Why should your battery life syffer to fix a prob of your brand new machine. -
Besides the reduction in battery life, will doing so damage the hardware? -
No it wont damage anything...

After a few days of communication by phone and e-mail between me and XPS Support in Europe to solve the cpu-whine problem on my M1330. XPS Support offered me to send me an technician to switch motherboard, cpu and cpu-fansink with new components. A replacement order was not an option at this time because of the backlog of orders on the M1330 currently. So I took the technician as a first step to fix my M1330. Hopefully the repair will work as intended and with no added damage to my little baby.
During our talks, the support guy mentioned a patch to solve the cpu-whine. As I understood it, its a new BIOS version where you will have the option to turn off/on the C4-state on the processor. Unfortunately a software solution for a hardware problem. Like the RMClock Utility, but more tailor made for the M1330.

sesshomaru Suspended Disbelief!
No idea what's up with my system, but it hasn't whined a bit in the last week.. It seems to have gradually tapered off... Pretty unusual.
-
Im glad. I had heard of instances of the whining dissipating and its encouraging to others, I think, that there is actually someone here who has experienced that.
-
My exchange order is in boxing (since yesterday)... i'm still undecided but more and more i'm considering selling that thing and switching over to a MBP. I know there's a chance that i would get the whine on a MBP, but it seems as though the chances are slimmer and that its more likely that my replacement m1330 will have the whine. Plus, purchasing the MBP at my local Apple Store would be pretty convenient too (if there are any problems--such as a whine--I've heard Apple Store are pretty quick with fixing/replaceing a sytem...for the most part).
Also.. i think i'll enjoy OS X (tiger and then leoperd) more than Vista.
I dunno guys.. i feel like each day i'm closer to joining the dark side. -
I have 1420. I have slight, but hardly noticeable CPU whine if i "turn off bluethooth". If I turn on the BT, no whine at all. My old E1405 did the same.
-
My replacement laptop is also ready to ship. The customer car personnel said I should receive the laptop between sept 12-14. According to the email, the rep also stated that if something is wrong with the new replacement laptop, I should contact them right away and depending on advice given from tech support, they will give me another replacement and that I must report this issue within 14 days of receiving the replacement laptop.
I'm still waiting to see results but it looks like apple is also my next switch if it happens again. -
no CPU whines from vostro 1400
-
I'm still deciding on whether I should call for a replacement or ask for a refund.. -
OK I'm not sure if I have CPU whine or not
Basically when I'm using 9 cell battery it is totally silent i can put my ear to the bottom and still hear nothing. However when I have the 6 cell battery in and it is charging I get the CPU whine noise but even when I've locked the CPU speed to max which makes me believe it isn't CPU whine but something to do with charging the 6 cell battery :s
Anyone else get something like this -
-
hmmm might test that when I get home. Sounds reasonable that its the battery becasue I don't get it with the 9 cell.
Thanks for the info -
But from the description it sounds like the battery. -
Mine made a whining noise, mostly when plugged in the charger (6-cell battery, in case that matters). It pretty much went away when I turned Bluetooth on though.
-
If you decide on giving dell a second chance do it now because you only have 30 days to file a system exchange that uses brand new parts. After the 30 days they can give you a refurbed machine. Also the wait time on these systems are horrendous so do it as quick as you can. You only have 30 days to get a full refund without being charged re-stocking.
However, according to my latest email from customers rep, they said that another option if the new replacement is faulty I can file for a credit return (I think that means full refund?) but I also have to do it within 14 days of receiving my replacement laptop. -
I've read through all of the posts in this thread, but can't find much about my particular problem.
Basically, the laptop runs quietly enough, and I used it for a fair amount yesterday with no problems.
However, last night, I shut it down and decided to leave it plugged in to charge when I went to bed... only to be woken up (just as I was dropping off!) by a continual squeal.
When I took out the power adapter, it shut up. Plugged in back in, and away it squealed... This only happens when the computer is off though.
Is this normal? -
On my new m1330, there is such a faint whine that I barely even notice. In fact, it wasnt until I put my ear to the laptop directly until I heard a faint whine.
-
Is this squeal in the computer or plug adapter??
and....
Just bought my son a Compaq F565CA 15.4" laptop with an AMD Sempron 3500+ Processor (Couldnt go wrong at 399Cdn)
AND IT SQUEALS AS WELL!!! So there we have it, first hand...
Guess you get what you pd for in this case. -
It's in the computer...
-
my system sometimes does a high pitched whine when off and charging too... but sometimes it's only when its in sleep mode. Really there are so many different instances when i get a squeal or whine that i don't even know anymore if they're related, or different.
-
ARE YOU SERIOUS?!
If Dell is willing to do that, then I won't have to go for a full refund..
I'm in my last 7 days of the 30 days..so it is now or never.. -

hello, I used the guide here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=165029
And it has completely removed my CPU whine.
2 questions though:
1) If I close the program down will my settings be saved or do I need to have that program running to have those particular settings?
2) I disabled the pop up and pop down modes and left C4 the same, will the deselection of pop up and pop down influence battery life?
If anyone could help it would be much appreciated.
Thanks, -
Ive experimented with the program and it reduced my battery life by over an hour. Its something your goning to have to try for yourself though.
Other than that, there is no ill efffects of the program -

Is that with disabling that C4 state or doing the pop up and pop down?
-
I tried disabling the C4, but the computer seemed to freeze a lot after that. Does anyone else have that problem with third party software? (My Dell replacement order has already been placed! Let's hope I won't have to deal with this when the replacement comes!)
-
-
Getting lock ups when disabling C4 with RMClock aswell.
-
i have a similar problem as came up 3 pages ago,
my 4 cell produces no exceptional noise, but when charging the 9 cell, at about 4/5 charge it starts howling. unplugging the power stops the sound, as does waking up the laptop, but it howls for about 15 seconds at a time until it charges up. should i pursue a replacement 9 cell?
Also, is the cpu whine of this thread a faint high pitched digital scratching sound? -
It maybe a possible battery defect now since it's only a minor battery problem then you can request for a 9 cell replacement and just wait for it to come. I would urge you to do it as soon as possible as their "satisfaction guarentee" period is only the first 30 days of your first laptop.
The cpu whine as described from many pages ago that it is a high pitched digital scractching (morse code) sound. -
Just to vent my frustration,
A Dell repair technician changed the CPU, motherboard and heatsink on my M1330 today. The repairs went as aspected, the CPU-whine didn't go away. I am seriously thinking of getting my money back. I feel a little bit sad as well because the XPS M1330 is in my view, a very portable laptop for my needs.
Oh well, I am happy that I got another computer I can work on (unfortunately not portable)...

lol.. I can't believe I missed my laptop's delivery.. but I can't help it.. I was at uni =(
It was here since the 11th and now I'm arranging a pick up with purolator to send me the laptop tmr night 6pm - 8:30pm
I hope it'll be good.. I'm really excited especailly people said they were built better. -
Somewhere in a German forum I heard of low-quality mainboard components which cause the "CPU" whine.
Is there any statement from Intel or Dell about this issue? I'm not ordering a notebook until this is resolved. Even if it means I have to wait until Penryn.
God damn, it can't be that hard to produce a proper notebook. Bloody pillocks. -
For me the whine is driver related, changing the Nvidia & Intel Wifi driver sorted it for me, my system is quiet now, both on battery and power.
I don't believe the whine is HW related, but driver related -
I'm pretty sure Dell knows about this issue no matter how much the CSRs try to pretend that they don't. In their documentation it says to file for a replacement and to turn off C4 state. Although many users reported above that disabling C4 causes M1330 to be unstable at times, we think that Dell is going to release a new Bios firmware that will "fix" this issue.
However, turning off C4 state means less battery life and ultimately more heat. As notebook users, we want to take advantage of our laptop as much as possible especially when we talk about battery life (at least I think that's why I wanted the M1330).
I don't think intel even acknowledge the existance of such matters as doing a simple search on google only shows non-stop listing of forums with people talking about this issue on various laptops. I have yet to find a url that contains intel.com in it. Given this fact, I doubt that in the future, Intel will do anything to fix this problem.
Personally, I think it's just a matter of components interfering with each other causing this because there are some sucess stories where an M1330 did not have this cpu whine (considering they all use the same mobo and intel chips). It's more like the luck of a draw. -
Makes sense to me, Murdoc.
It would really blow if Dell is going to fix this issue with a simple BIOS upgrade in which they just disable the C4 mode. I don't want that little notebook-***** hanging around with the power-brick all the time and 40 minutes less battery life is a serious disadvantage.
Is there any tech-experienced user willing to pinpoint the origin of the noise? I'm wondering if the whine really comes from the CPU or from another part of the mainboard. What about a high-sensitivity microphone? -
cheap-information Notebook Enthusiast
Hi, ordered a replacement motherboard and CPU to sort out the problem.
is there any chance that this may happen? -
.
// X -
The whine has never been confirmed as being on the CPU or surrounding heatsink and motherboard.
Its a ghost whine...
There are commons about it and one is that, changing surrounding parts may eliminate it, even though the part never caused it.
As for Dell releasing a bios to alter the C4 state, I don't think this will occur as it is a recognized problem but who knows right? If it saves them returns...and loss of business. -
I got a red replacement today and it doesn't sound as bad. but, it's wobbly!
-
-
-
Well.. the new one wobbles, and clicks like crazy. The high pictch whine is not constant like before, but it is still there. Also after two weeks of use, the original one got worse, so I didn't want to risk it. So in the ned I am returning them both. =(
Oh, and also, I had other problems like sometimes when shutting down, it would get stuck on the spinning wheel and wouldn't budge for hours. Then I would have to override it with the button, which I hate to do.
Just ordered an HP.
I really wanted to love my M1330, but the noise... I couldn't handle it. -
-
I can imagine what the refurb M1330s are....
