I can't see the awfulness if you have enough space for the numeric keypad (the Studio XPS 1640 could have been an example).
-
I honestly don't think there is room for a number pad.
-
There are many laptops with numeric keypad in the market. I'm not saying that I want a Studio XPS 1640 with numeric keypad, I'm just saying that there is enough room for it.
You may have seen 3-rowed numeric keypads in laptops which obviously need less width than the numeric keypad in a conventional keyboard.
I can see in the image that the XPS 1640 has enough room for 2 rows at the right, plus if you suppose space for another 2 rows in the left, you will reach the conclusion that there is enough room for the numeric keypad. -
I think it would be pushing it. Number pad are mostly reserved for the 17+ inch models. The 1640 will take on about the same form as the Sony FW and it's hard for me to see a number pad going on that.
-
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
The Asus M50 has a numpad and it is a 15.4" notebook. So why not on a 16.4"? I think it would fit nicely.
-
Asus always try and fit in a full keyboard in smaller models, but thats Asus.
I have a Cinedash media controller, full keyboard, 4 row numpad AND a vertical line of shortcut buttons and status indicators in one row on a 18.4in. -
I'm not saying it isn't possible, it just doesn't look good at all.
-
So any updates from someone actually at CES this week?
Specs? Release date? Worth waiting for? -
I don't think CES starts until Thursday. -
I think it's worth waiting less than 72 hours for.
-
I would at least wait to hear about the latest information this week.
-
Yes I agree, wait til after CES for any information.
Cin
-
Yeah I realized that after I had posted.
I thought CES is like Comdex and E3 in that it runs all week but learned that it starts Thursday and runs through Sunday.
That explains why there is 0 news
Thanks -
And when after the CES, there's still no news, we'll all start another round of disappointment.
-
yea dell really has nothing competitive against the DV5t, and that model appears to be in a real sweet spot in the market
cheap 15" with good graphics -
Keep in mind though that 9600GT in DV5t comes with DDR2 Ram. 9600GT with DDR3 is significantly faster. Like HDX16, Acer 5930, 6930, some MSIs and Asus for example.
-
What I like about HP and Dell is that the blu-ray drive is "only" a $150 option. Not $500
like the Vaio Z. I hope this holds true for the new 13" model.
-
And you wonder why it took forever for BD to take off. Those arrogant idiots at Sony never fails to amaze me.
It looks like there will be a display for the XPS line. My boss is at CES. I just spoke to him over the phone and he said he saw a bunch of people carrying a large Dell Studio XPS cardboard display. -
Don't worry, they might lose their jobs any moments from now.
-
Now there is some promising info.!!
-
Unfortunately and sadly no they will not. It's usually the people at the bottom that get the slip. Not the guy calling all the dumb shots. It's the poor people that have to deal with the customers and the out of touch executives that end up getting the short straw.
-
when a cardboard display is exciting news, it's a little sad.
I'm just don't get all the mad secrecy. Other vendors have released specs. I guess Dell doesn't want one single day to detract from current XPS sales? How many potential customers have they lost that didn't wait because they don't know what they are waiting for? Puzzling to me. -
Really? Wow, I am still ready to push the button on the DV5T through Costco because I can return it if Dell really releases something worth buying.
Buy I posted on these forums and even called HP to ask if the ONLY difference between configuration options on the DV5T and HDX16 is the screen resolution (and of course the silly 10key keypad I'll never use) and the answers I kept getting over and over are basically...yes.
But you are saying the HDX16 9600M uses DDR3 while the DV5T 9600M uses DDR2?
Hmmm - well that is important, although I'm curious as to the difference on the same specs for each laptop on a given game, etc. -
Well, when you consider the enormity of the old thread, combined with the size of this one, and the fact that a cardboard display represents a light at the end of the tunnel, it is exciting.
Those of us delaying the purchase of a new laptop because we are waiting to see what Dell rolls out will soon no longer have to delay that purchase, whether we buy the new SXPS (XPSS??) or not. -
I just got of with a dell online chat rep and he told me that there are no new models coming out! When the XPS M1530 was coming out I asked a rep (this time in person) and he told me that it was coming out 1 month before it came out.
-
So you might as well stop waiting and buy what I'm selling right now. Salesmen gotta eat too you know!! -
I know I am a computer salesmen too, but I just can't wait for a new laptop! DAM this hurts and if it does not come with a GPU or it is ridiculously expensive I will go CRAZY! Hell imagine if it does not come out at all!
Well then again there is always Clevo M570RU at Xotic I can always buy. -
I think some Reps know, some don't. My dedicated EPP Rep, told me yesterday...to keep my eyes open ~ But, could neither confirm or deny.
The fact that were seeing this type of teaser in advert's: is surely a good thing, no??
I think it *won't be soon before long*, before it happens. I'm not going to get over-excited! When it roll's out, it will roll... and very well
I like this *practicing daily patience* task, I do it everyday!

Nice this week should be the week we finally see something.
-
I have been following this thread & the original thread for 4 months, patiently waiting for pics, specs & release date of this Studio XPS 13. When the pics came up at Engadget ( http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell...ed-laptop-revealed-adamo-info-leaked/1234532/) showing the location of the headphone/SPDIF jacks at the front, I was disappointed - just hate the external speaker cables running below my hands. Last weekend, I bought Sony Vaio SR (Centrino 2 P8400, 4GB RAM, WLED Backlit screen, thin & lightweight @ 1.95kg and most importantly headphone jacks on the side).
Good luck to you guys who have been patiently waiting for this Studio XPS. -
I was just about to say, "No big deal, I'll buy something else" buy you edited your post too fast. That is exactly it. If they don't come out with something this week, I'll simply take them off my list. If they come out with something b4 I buy, I'll check it out. If not, oh well....
-
Quite honestly, when it comes to anything beyond the usual, basic support fodder, I'd trust Engadget / Gizmodo more than I would Dell reps.
-
I moved on in August and just bought a Studio 15 since it didn't look like they were going to have a Montevina refresh anytime soon. However, I still held on to hope that there would be a new laptop and I am excited to finally see them come to light.
-
I know but like I said, I knew a rep who told me about the Dell XPS M1530 way before release date. I would try to find him but unfortunately he and everyone else working at Dell kiosks and the Dell call center in my city lost there jobs dell shut them down.
-
The creator of this thread should add a Poll...*What day/month do you think the release will factually happen*
LoL..Could be good, or just really messy!
Cin
-
Haha hopefully the correct month is... January.
-
Hopefully the correct day would be the 8th of January.
-
Ahh yes...but what day, prey tell!
Yes, Friday...sounds like a good day!
My guess will be 1/15
It just seems like things move with Dell on Thursday or Fridays...
Cin
-
Friday is a good day, but THURSDAY the 8th is even better!
-
LOL. I was thinking the same thing when I made the post. We're a sad bunch!
Well one CES day full of HP and Asus news. Hopefully tomorrow we will get something from Dell. If not, it will be Thursday when the door is open to the public. -
The other thing history generally proves (I can name SO many examples, can't think of one to the contrary) is when a company has a great product, they all but help leak info about it to generate hype and buzz.
This feel similar to the heroic bomb of a desktop Dell has in the XPS 730. Took forever to find out what their 'new' desktop refresh to the XPS desktop line was and lagged so far behind other companies that it seems Nahalem would be out before they would refresh.
It finally came out and was ridiculed even by Dell fanbois. Now mind you most serious gamers or hardcore users I know all build their own anyway (don't know a single one who doesn't, including myself), but if you WERE to buy one and waited, you would have been very dissappointed.
So maybe Dell flopped on this attempt at a refresh and it is why it's taken so long (no other single reason can explain it if you are in business to make money) and maybe they have finally corrected enough of the flaws to make it 'sellable'.
Hopefully it won't turn into the outcry that was on the forums here and elsewhere after their XPS 630 attempt.
I bought and returned two of those and Dell was so desperate that when I wanted to return the second one with 11 issues, 7 of which tech support sent an email addmitting they don't know how to fix [fans, lights, etc. etc.] and have no answer anytime soon, Dell offered me 45% off of it!!!!! I still kept that email
BTW this wasn't for me but for my wife's younger brother. I was too busy to spend time building one for him and then having to support it but in hindsight...
So we shall see, but I'm not holding my breath. And more so, I'll be curious to see what issues it has once it does ship, if it ever does.
I'm hoping for the best but in analyzing the only data we have, something just doesn't feel right.
And with the DV5T winning laptop of the year in both CPU magazine and Laptop magazine [in it's respective class], at least there is a proven track record there. But I am so scared of HP's service record (go read their forums) and Consumer Reports ranking them as awful (D- I think) that I rather take my chances with Dell's support if possible.
I wish laptops were at the point where we could easily build our own like desktops. They are almost there with more and more component options but I think it will be another 2 years or so before you see as many being built as pre-ordered.
Ughhh! -
are these the new ones.
both start at $1199
