Like I said in an earlier post, I can't think of a single product that is great in technology (name one if you can) but I can think of many bombs...that didn't have their info leaked months in advance and had sites and media with versions to test, benchmark, and help build hype about.
Where there is smoke, there is always fire. Dell has delayed this for SO long and the options are so...blah. It looks nice and shiny but I don't buy laptops for nice and shiny.
I buy them for performance.
How come not a single outlet has had this to review and benchmark before it goes on sale. How come Dell hid the specs until now?
After looking at them, I see why![]()
I remember predicting what would happen to the XPS desktops and unfortunately I was right. Sure, I was a bit cynical at that point (right before the 630 XPS came out), but the evidence all spoke to what was happening.
I never saw this happening to the XPS laptops....
-
The card hasnt been benchmarked yet... so no one knows what its capable of.
-
I was being sarcastic. But other vendors *cough* have 'mainstream' laptops with better configurations for hardcore video, gaming, etc.
Yikes! -
But no-one has anything 9800M level. Except Asus but they usually differ from the norm. For example, they squeeze a numpad on every 15in model they have while Dell can't even put a numpad on a 16in!
-
i don't knokw why we expect these laptops to be the top end, the TC also posted that the XPS laptop line WILL be refreshed so we should look forward to that as the the top of the line.
-
nog, maybe you and some of us here at NBR don’t buy notebooks for their looks, but there are plenty of people out there who do. Take all the macbook owners for example… they are willing to pay thousands of $$ just to get what? The most shiniest and thinnest laptop? Do they ever care about what is inside
? Maybe DELL has taken a page off Apples book in making notebooks.
BUT as I said before I’m still not ready to speculate about M86-XT, wait and see. -
Anyone know how to find these on the dell website? I know we have direct links, but I'm trying to find it on the website in my country.
-
They usually don't appear on other country's websites until a week or two after. The Studio 15 only appeared on the AU site two months ago.
-
here is wishful thinking...
Dell wanted to go with ATI 46xx series but since they are not out yet Dell sells them with X86XT instead.. for the time being that is.. -
Any info on how much does it weight?if same as MBP,I might reconsider getting one...and what material does it use?
-
hey guys i found some stuff about the m86xt .. if you go to this wiki page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_ATI_Graphics_Processing_Units
you will see that the mobility 3650 uses the codename "m86" .. so my guess is the m86xt is maybe a higher clocked version of it since ati had previously used the xt suffix to denote higher clocks .. thatmeans m86xt is the codename -
Heh, pretty bad we have to go decode a graphics card instead of being wow'ed
Well, I went to the Costco website and without coupons, student-discounts, etc. got a DV5T for $1254 with 4 gig, P8600, 9600M, 250G 7200RM, 12 cell battery, infinity display, 2 year warranty, etc.
I got 90 days to return it which is great vs. buying from HP.
If somehow new info surfaces on additional options or benchmarks that show its faster/better than a DV5T or HDX16T (or other equivalent notebooks) and when you take price into comparison, I can always return this.
Something tells me the receipt won't be needed.
Ahh well, everyone had different expectations but after almost 10 months of waiting, my socks were blown off! But for all the wrong reasons :/
GL to the rest, I'll be following just for fun and checking up on the reviews that hopefully Toms, Anantech, or other big sites do. -
how long.. before dell let choose between different videocard? (maybe 4670 or 48xx??)
Do you think that when it will be available on the other countries.. we can purchaise it with another and most powerful videocard?
Thanks a lot -
omg. No-one knows. You can't ask "how long will something appear". Because if anyone knew, they would say. And no-one knows if Dell even care about the 4000 series anyways. That would require a whole motherboard change and they probably won't be bothered.
1. Of course it will be available in other countries. 2. No and NO. The Studio XPS won't ever be getting a "most powerful videocard". It's a mid-range laptop aimed at people with mid-range needs. If anyone knew Dell's plans, they would speak up. -
If it has 4670 as an option I'm buying one, if not it's either MBP or Clevo M860TU.
Come on Dell! -
What rumour? Wishful thinking or actual rumour?
I doubt it. Because it would require a revision of the motherboard for a new generation of cards. And we don't even know how well 4670s will perform. -
Any news on the new 17" XPS? I've been wanting to switch out my old M1530 with a powerhouse, but the current M1730 is weak. : o
-
aww. A little disappointed by this Dell. :/. And why using old 3xxx series ATI GPUs instead of new ones? Perhaps the 3670 is a filler until the card they had planned (which may still have problems with the IGP) is properly fitted.
Hmm. Have to wait to see what comes of this. -
I'm very curious about the weight as well.
First published was: Starting Weight: 4.85lbs.
I hope that was wrong. -

I'm looking forward to anything that amounts to an official statement or press release from DELL. Maybe tomorrow will bring news? (Just to keep the anticipating notion of this thread alive)
I wonder how long it will take for the new machines to arrive on the European Market and at what price. The Euro is still quite strong, but I truly doubt that DELL will forfeit the chance to earn a little extra by offering at equitable prices in Europe as in the U.S., in Euro, of course. ($1199 will probably be 1199 EUR+ rather than 930 EUR with these days' exchange rates...) -

Can you say fingerprint magnet? Hehe..
And it appears to have backlick keyboard aswell.
I just spoke to a Dell representative here in Norway, asking when it would be available for sale, and he said he had a demo right in front of him as we spoke (1640).
He said the screen was really beautiful but the laptop was quite heavy. He guessed it to be roughly 3+ to 4 kg! Which thanks to google means 7 to 8 pounds! Ugh, i hope he was just weak. -
Looks like those media touchpads are on board again. Good one

Nice specs but my 1530 is still in good working order. I guess I'll wait for the MacAir killer. I left the web site 'cause my palm as getting itchy to buy one.
-
The Highest I could get the price was, $3,087. not bad. Makes me want to get one, xD I wonder if the GPU is any good...
-
Are you able to buy it, I was able to put it in my account

sonoritygenius Goddess of Laptops
The 1640 has ATI graphics!! (the 8xt) wow!!!!!
Not too surprised about the 1340 having 9400m GS..
The leather top looks a bit iffy - need to see a video or something -
But a 4670 and a 3670 are a whole generation apart and on different MXMs. The 8600M and 8400M were extremely easy to swap in th Inspirons.
-
Look at my sig
-
I don't think its a GT, most likely going to be a 9500M GS.
-
I don't really understand why there is such a focus on the graphic card... Sure it's important if you are in gaming, but then what? I don't buy my laptop for gaming, and I consider the 16' to be an interesting solution. DDR3 memory, LED display, 7200tpm harddrive for default config, that can be interesting. Especially the Full HD RGB LED screen, usually you find that only on very high end models... I use my lappy mainly for photos, and watching movies. I don't need a killer graphic card for this, just one able to decode HD. So that could be a solid contender for a nice looking (leather, why not, could look great) and solid performances. Looking at the DV5, I can't find any option for LED and/or fullHD screen, is it possible?
-
Now back on topic, what made me sold me for the 1340 was that, 1. I think the 1640 is a bit on the cumbersome side, I mean it a 16 inch notebook
2. The screen choices, should have been a WSXGA option there
My con for the 1340 is that theres no option for an Intel wireless card and there's no fingerprint reader -
This machine looks very slick I like it! I'm not into 16 inchers, they don't fit in my bag, and both resolutions seem poor to me. 1440 x 900 is the best resolution of all time.
-
Is it just me who cannot spot a fingerprint reader?
-
Hey all....Saw this late in the early morning earlier!
Look *Engadget* is giving prop's to this very thread on NBR for the information supplied on the *sneak release* of the 1340/1640: (click the NBR link at the bottom in the news info & it brings you to the thread)

This is confusing...2 threads on the same topic!
Great news, though!

They should close and delete the other one
plz don't merge -
Sweetness! The 1340 is a great price & the 1640 base as well.
Oddly though, many ppl don't want the screen size that the 1640 offers (16"); and would LOVE to have the 1640's video card in the 1340. Also notice that the nVidia 9400M in the 1340 reduces the price by $100US. While the 9500M GS card is included in the list price!! Not bad at all for dedicated 256MB video memory.
The styling of these makes the MacBook/Pro models look old now. I just hope that Windows7 will be a loadable & supported option this summer when I have the cash to purchase these. For now I'll get the HP DV2 just announced; handing it down to my daughter when I upgrade to the Dell.
Is there an eSATA & HDMI port on these badboys?!
Looks like those of us NORTH of the USA Border don't get to play! -

They can merge this one into the other...or as suggested ~ close the thread (and link it to the new one).
And then open 2 separate threads, one for the 1340, and one for the 1640. As, the thread is just going to get larger.
Just my thoughts....
