    The ATI Mobility RADEON® M86XT is pretty much comparable to the Nvidia 9600m GT. (9600m gt is slightly better - performance wise)

    However the 9600m is also around 25% more power efficient.
    (23 watt versus 30 watt)

    Considering that Nvidia usually offer driver updates more frequently than Ati - I'd imagine that with new drivers the 9600m will well out perform the Ati.

    Considering that the Studio xps 1340 is available with Nvidia only options, and the fact that most other laptop manufacturers have gotten over the 8 series fiasco - You would wonder why they went with Ati on this laptop?

    weak? you nuts?

    this is probably the closest you will get to the "new 17" XPS", now call the "old" m1730 weak

    i suppose i dont understand your definition.... if you compare it to a desktop, well yeah i suppose it is weak... but it is pretty powerful for a laptop. by most standards anyways

    How about Acer?
    Just a couple of weeks after Centrino 2 was launch, they refreshed the 6920G spec.
    Aspire 6920G -> Aspire 6935G
    GM965 -> GM45
    Geforce 9500M GS DDR2 -> Geforce 9600M GT GDDR3

    Well 9500M GS is just renamed of 8600M GT. Same manufacturing process 80nm.

    Again, thats from the same generation to the same generation - 9500M GS to 9600M GT and 9650M GS to 9700M GT. What's even handier is the fact that all of the mentioned cards are on the same upgrade path and can be replaced easily.

    The 3670 and 4670 , again, are a whole generation apart and very different cards.

    Wow nice find! The specs on the 1600 series look really good. I didnt have to edit a single item. I'm not really liking how they look though. They appear very formal and business like, but i guess if your looking for a "cool" laptop you'd probably pick up an Alienware...

    Feel like crying :( bought a XPS M1530 2 months ago,should have waited
    the only thing which makes me feel good about my M1530 is that its probably lighter and i *think* my video card is better
    and mine costs the same as the base model,i think its too good to be true

    Seeing as how the 3650 is similar to the 8600M GT, the 3670 is probably better.

    On comparison to Asus, the 1640 does have a RGB LED, so far I haven't seen anything from them with 300nit brightness and the level of color response we can expect from a RGB LED. Asus lures you in with great specs and good prices, but there are definitely drawbacks in build quality and screen quality that varies from downright bad to decent depending on model.

    The 1640 does have a frustrating video card - the laptop isn't light, and Leonovo has already announced laptops with N10P video cards, so the video here might be the dealbreaker. Its only twice as fast as the 8600GT that a lot of people are upgrading from and will have a hard time with GTA4, even not at native resolution.

    argh I just can't decide :p I love the RGBLed option from the 1640 (although it'll probably be rather expensive in Europe) but I find the whole thing to be looking a tad to heavy (I'm going to be taking it to college each day, so it's going to be awful for my back) although the memory options on the 1640 are also amazing so far, especially for me who has to run multiple VM's at once.

    One way or the other, Dell struck gold with these ones! Can't wait to be able to order mine :D

    Is everybody a gamer here?? :) And is this 1640 targeted ONLY at gamers? I'm not so sure... XPS machines are probably more than the Studio XPS, right? And Alienware even more. Of course, if the laptop can be cheaper than those lines and provide good gaming experience, it's great, but I'm not so sure it's the focus here. It looks more like a good "all-around" player to me. A gaming notebook with leather? :)

    Wow, a 16' laptop at college? Why don't you consider a 13' instead, 14' max? I would never go higher. I understand you can need the high resolution screen, but your back will die before you can enjoy it ;) And RGBLed surely looks fantastic, but it's expensive and more targeted for people working a lot on photos, or graphic designers. A "simple" WLED screen on a 13' already looks great (I have a M1330, I can say it I guess), and it's quite light.

    Everyone is focusing on the video card because that's obviously the weakest point of this laptop versus the competitors. It is all relative, not always whether or not you will game. Would you buy something that is less inferior for the same price? or if you could put in 1% to get 15% better performance? 16" is the norm for the last 6 months. Dell is just going with the crowd, nothing innovative there.

    Yeah, like I said: I can't decide. I've been carrying my Inspiron 6400 along with me the last 3 years and although I'm used to it I still feel pain in my shoulders if I have to carry it a long time.
    The other issue is that I travel a lot (train, airplane, hotels, ...) and that having a nice screen with you can be a godsend to watch some movies.

    Not by much. It's pretty darn sad for a next generation laptop to have a card that is "slightly" better than the last generation. I'm sure we will see an option for a better card in the coming months. After all this is the base card.

    Wow I'm loving config for xps 1340, what do you think the battery life would be? (don't see 9cell battery option) . Is 9500m hybrid? Also 9500m has quite a good performance in 3Dmark06 (scoring 4000 points) . Do you think I will be overclockable? I saw some 15 inch config with 9500m overclocked and scoring around 5000 in 3Dmark06. Is there anything in this new lappies not already available in others, for comparable prices? I still think dell is a tad late and seeing the responses around a lot of people already bought something else because of the long wait.
    I did understand the hype before the official announcement but i would be dissappointed if this was what i had been waiting for.
    Maybe when more options become available

    This lineup has disappointed me. If the M86XT is really the 3670 as suggested, it has lower performance than the 9600M GT that comes in most high-end 15.4"/16" notebooks. I think I will pass on these notebooks. I wish the 9700M and 9800M wasn't so power hungry compared to the 9600M, I'd really like to see more high-performance notebooks.

    The M1340 looks pretty nice (for the price), but what's with the screws on the lower part of the bezel. It seems like it's there to keep attach the leather part covering the bottom third of the lid, but couldn't they have done it in a nicer way? Talk about eye-sore...

    LOL..I remember Last December/January when the XPS 1530 had just came out, and there was a thread like this!

    It grew and grew, with all the questions you all are asking!~

    And, I have some of the same q's myself! :rolleyes:

    I'm thinking I'm going to get the 1340, but I'm going to wait a bit ~ As usually w/in the first few weeks after a new release, there as some fairly decent discounts, etc. :D

    Plus, I want to get feedback from those whom have purchased the first round of the new release! :D

    Does anyone here have EPP? Have you checked the pricing on your EPP site? Is it even availi' on the EPP site!

    That means that after you receive your 1640, w/in 6-8 weeks max..you will receive a $200 Gift Card that you can use at dell.com

    They did this when the 1530's were first released last year. It's a great deal.
    You will have to stay on top of the 6-8 week waiting period, and right at the end prob's contact Dell to inquire where it is.

    I know last year there were some issues, and peep's were delayed in getting there $200 GC. Hopefully, they have improved on this...for the better :D

    In fact, this 4.9-pounder features the same Nvidia GeForce 9400M integrated graphics as Apple’s premium 13-incher, although discrete Nvidia GeForce 9500M graphics is available as an option. If you go this route Dell says you’ll be able to toggle the graphics cards on the fly—good for when you need to save battery power or get a little power boost.

    Well I got that answer. Now about how good the 9500M is.
