Is that x-fi card (ExpressCard Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Sound Card) really worth it? I want to know cause I was building a Studio XPS 16 this morning and it shot the price up $80.

The Xfi card is good if you use your headphones since it has its own 3.5mm headphone output; should be cleaner than the output that is built into the mother board. I think it has analog (optical?) input as well.

I think it uses its own 3d surround rendering as well (ie. not Dolby).

Hello NBR. Just wanted to say hey and I'll be joining the 1640 owners.

I just ordered the following specs:

    Core 2 Duo P9400 (2.53GHz/1066Mhz FSB/6M L2 Cache)
    4GB, DDR3
16.0 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p FullHD RGBLED LCD W/2.0 MP, XPS 1640
    128GB Solid State Drive
    8X DVD+/-RW Slot Load Drive for XPS1640
    Bluetooth

    Subtotal: $1,623.92

You should def call them to order. They gave me a discount on top of my EPP discount and free shipping. This should be a great upgrade from my 700m.

Wow we're being completely ripped off in Europe. You're paying 1339 Canadian dollar for a base model i presume, which is like 833 euro. We pay 1000 euro's for exactly the same (the base model). Which is 167 euro!!! (268 Canadian Dollar!!!) MORE than what you pay (not even counting delivery costs, which are like 30 euro en free in canada)! Another reason to migrate... :D

    Update on ordering:

Bought the 1340 with the P9500 CPU, 9500M GPU, 128 SSD, BT, and LED screen for 1460 without tax. Free overnight shipping (but I'm from Nashville anyway) and I got the $200 gift card that will be coming in the mail in 6-8 weeks. Original price of the computer was 1819 without tax. On top of that, he threw in the Dell V305w wireless printer for $25--original price is $130. Was that a good deal? I tried to negotiate more but he stopped ahaha.

I guess I'll try to sell the printer on craigslist or something for $50 or 60 and make some money.

Add the 7-12% taxes(depending on the province) + $5 environmental levy fees. The total should be pretty close to euros. But in any case. You should migrate to Canada :D

Got mine as well. Posting from it at the moment. Overall a very nice laptop. Good build quality. Liking the keyboard...pretty solid. Some minor flex.

It is taking me some time getting use to the RGB display. Colors are definitely good on it...too good sometimes....some of the colors are blinding haha.

Finger print magnet though. The palm rest is glossy so it gets messy.

If you have any specific questions, let me know. I will try to get a few images up later. If you want anything specific, let me know.

    Specific questions:

    1. Is it as warm/hot as NBR says?
    2. How hot does the leather feel if the laptop does get hot?
    3. How is the battery life?
    4. Did you get the Blu ray option? Is the slot load drive noisy?
    5. How does the weight/heat feel on your lap?
    6. Has the fan turned on because of the heat?
    7. How smug are you for being one of the first to have your Studio XPS? :D

Please report on temps while just doing basic tasks (web, Word, etc).

Did you get a normal HDD? How is the vibration, heat, and noise from it?

    Pics please :)

    1. Is it as warm/hot as NBR says? Yes it is fairly warm. The palm rests especially. The bottom gets quite warm as well. Not as hot as the MBP do, but a little more so than my Inspiron 1520. I can keep it on my laptop without complaints though.
    2. How hot does the leather feel if the laptop does get hot? The leather is warm, but much cooler than the rest of laptop. The hinge and lid stay cool.
    3. How is the battery life? I have not tested this yet.
    4. Did you get the Blu ray option? Is the slot load drive noisy? Yes I did get the Blu ray player. I am having difficulty getting blu rays to play. Still working on this. The slot loaded drive does make some noise, but no more than the MB/MBP slot loaded drives do.
    5. How does the weight/heat feel on your lap? The laptop sits well on my lap. It is balanced well. Heat is a little warm which is nice in the winter. It is warmer from the middle of the laptop forward towards the palm rest (where the HD is located). :)
    6. Has the fan turned on because of the heat? Yes the fan runs constantly. It exhausts out the back. I am in a somewhat noisy room and cannot hear it, but it is quite loud in a quiet room.
    7. How smug are you for being one of the first to have your Studio XPS? :D  :)

Now heat wise, this is with IE open and installing updates and programs. I have not ran it at idle for any extended period of time to see if the heat is lower. I will do so when I am up-to-date on the programs.

Pictures will be coming in the next hour or so.

I got just a 5200 RPM 320GB Drive. Heat is there while installing updates and programs. There is a little noise from the drive, but the fan noise trumps it. No vibration.

I will work on getting a 3D Mark score as well.

Plus Dell is one of the few companies that ships clean install discs, so it's a moot point anyway.

Doh! I ordered mine the 13th, Dell bothered processing it on the 15th, and it's currently still in Boxing (and with several days in testing...)

But I ordered the regular screen.

Why spend the money on Ultimate? I'd put that towards the faster CPU (or Blu Ray, or whatever) and stick with Home Premium...unless you both use Microsoft's DVR software and need to log in to a domain.

Any TV Tuner that's compatible with DVR software like Microsoft's that's included with Vista Home Premium should work just fine. It's the software that turns the machine into a DVR.

I have no experience with it though, and it sounds like generally you're still better off with Tivo (which I'm still quite happily using!)

Yeah, I'm disheartened to hear about these bigger discounts. I don't know how to negotiate, and I'm not brave enough probably even if I was :(

    Wait, wait, wait!!!!!

Mine shipped! Mine just shipped! No carrier stuff yet, but it's supposed to be here Tuesday.

I hope the long time in testing isn't bad.

I *do* have the lower resolution (ie, sane ;D ) screen, along with the 2.53GHz/6MB CPU, and Blu Ray, otherwise pretty stock I think.

I probably could have gotten mine cheaper or gotten something thrown in but I didn't. I just called up the EPP folks and emailed the lady my shopping cart and said I was thinking about ordering and what did she think...she put me on hold and came back with a promotion that gave me more than the EPP discount and free shipping.

No fuss no muss. Just call and ask what they can do for you. It was almost like she expected me to haggle more, but I thought their offer was pretty fair for a new model to be discounted at all is great.

I ordered the Base Screen with the 2.4 Core and BlueTooth as well. Has Anyone in Canada had theirs Shipped Yet? Sounds like orders in the states are being processed faster.

Oh and Tried calling Dell Canada a moment ago. They said their systems are down. Never good when a Computer Companies "Systems are down" hehe.
