My wife and I own two of the 9350 i5 256gb QHD+ Signature models. One was purchased for my wife in December and another for me early this March. I have been following this thread since well before the first purchase and fortunately we have not encountered any of the serious issues reported here. We are completely happy with the laptops and hopefully that will continue.
The laptops were purchased as identical units, though I replaced my SSD with a 500gb Samsung 850 EVO and installed a second copy of Win-10 for testing purposes in a dual-boot configuration. I have been entirely satisfied with the 850 EVO.
Our battery life is good, typically 5-6 hours or more depending on usage and screen brightness.
As others have reported I am less than pleased with the range of the stock WiFi card but for now it is serving our needs though in the future I may replace.
I can recommend this EveCase sleeve (with handles and and outside pocket):

The 9350 fits perfectly in this case, though with no extra room at all.

Try the Microsoft store. I got mine for $899 after student discount, but it looks like it's only $799 for everyone now. Clean windows install, and the model you want. No temp issues in the i5. Just the occasional screen flicker but nothing a restart won't fix for me. I have fiddled around with reenabling the wifi and it seems to maybe work as well.

Welp, I finally broke down and tried a clean install of vanilla Windows 10 to resolve my touchpad bouncing and jumping. Didn't work. I used to think it was a software problem, but I'm now leaning toward hardware. There is a report on reddit of the problem finally being resolved by replacing the touchpad.
Does anyone know if I'll have to send in my unit to Dell? The report I saw mentioned a technician coming out to fix the problem, but I'm not sure if they had some special warranty. Any advice on convincing them to come out to me? -
Holy **** the touchpad sucks. It jumps while tracking and scrolling randomly bounces from the top to bottom and snaps to the original position. Anyone tried synaptics drivers hack with the 13?
-
I was really looking forward to buying this laptop but after hearing so many user complaints, I am not really sure. It looks and feels fantastic but there seems to be a lot of software & hardware issues. I started tı consider asus zenbook ux303ua or yoga 900.

I've i5 FHD... Simply perfect.. Sometimes seems the display flicking.. But I don't understand if it's sensor or not..

I have one of the shortened sd cards which sits recessed about 1-2mm in the card slot. I can remove this card with ease using a plastic repair tool used to prise the case off mobile phones for screen repair etc. Any plastic with a thin edge to it could be used to get it out. Just don't use anything metal (such as one side of a tweezer) as it could scratch the card or surrounding mount.Last edited: Mar 27, 2016

For a sleeve, I can recommend the original Dell sleeve for the XPS. It's not too expensive for a pc manufacturer, has magnets to hold the flap down (no noise unlike velcro or zips), and is understated in black with red stitching. As it's designed for the XPS 13 it fits like a glove - there is enough room (about a 1cm width) for a nano type usb receiver to be left in the laptop.Eason likes this.

The touchpad requires a little tweaking and the absence of three finger swipe (hard coded to switch between programs, can't reconfigure it to do back/forward) is annoying, but other than that this is by far the best laptop I have ever owned. (i5, FHD)

I bought microsoft signature image one from Amazon, 764$ tax free, i5 8gb ram 128gb ssd. I hope it will be a decent one.

So if thermal issues aren't resolved, would a non-throttling i7 HD 520 outperform a throttling i7 HD 540? Or would the HD 540 win out either way?

I've tried everything under the sun to fix my jumpy touch pad with no success. I am finally convinced that it is a hardware issue. I contacted Dell support and asked them nicely to send me a new touchpad that I could replace on my own, and they were completely fine with that. I don't think it's a typical user-replaceable part, but I imagine sending out parts to competent owners saves them time and money anyway.
I have done this in the past multiple times with Lenovo, and I'm glad to see that Dell is OK with it as well. Makes me feel better about my decision to pass on the in-home warranty. Just hope I don't ever have issues with my display, since it is glued and that would be a pain to service at home...Bigmouth likes this. -
Is it a complicated procedure to take out the keyboard to replace/reposition it?
My main issue is that my keyboard is somewhat misaligned (keys not centered in the holes) and I think that is the reason for my keys being swampy/mushy. I like the keyboard of XPS and surface pro 4, but mine is not at all how a functioning one at the store feels like. -
No, the 540 still outperforms the 520 by about 30%.

This is exactly my experience. -
I've disabled the sensor.. I'll try this way..

How did you do that, if I may ask?

Install the DBC patch from the website

What?
I don't know if works, but I found the option in advanced power management... Under the voice: screen

That won't actually fix it. It's the firmware for the display itself.

But is for FHD?
And why dell update doesn't find it?
I saw the drivers are not updated.. I've to do manually..
Someone has got same problem?
Inviato dal mio Nexus 4 utilizzando Tapatalk -
No, the FHD is unfixable with the dynamic brightness problem.

So going from a RB 2015 to XPS 15 now to an XPS 13, you feel like this has been a worthwhile tradeoff (power for portability)?

I've tried the Synaptics driver. It did eliminate (or at least dramatically reduce) the jumping and bouncing for me and worked better with certain programs than the PTP driver. But I ultimately found scrolling with the Synaptics driver subpar no matter how I tweaked it. Someone pointed out on reddit that the Synaptics may simply be compensating for the hardware problem with the touchpad, and I'm starting to suspect they're right.
Good to know. I suspected the in-home service was a special warranty. I'm not wild about replacing the touchpad myself but may have to go that route. Please let me know if your replacement successfully resolves the problem. -
Sorry, I didn't understand the problem with Synaptics..

Does anyone know where to buy the small casing-screws?
-
Eh...
Not really haha. Depends on the battery life maybe the most. I expected the razer core would be available soon, but it looks likes Asia won't get it until later in the year. I miss the 4k screen and gtx 960. Also miss the CPU and ram.
Thinking of buying another XPS 15 i7/uhd on eBay, assuming the $1370 opened box refurb isn't a scam

My problem was the Synaptics driver is very sluggish in response to small scroll movements (i.e., the equivalent of moving one or two clicks on a mouse wheel). I think it has to do with how the driver uses acceleration, but no matter how I tweaked the registry settings, I couldn't get it to my liking.
-
I wonder if there are any other "precision touchpads", that suffer from the bouncy/jumpy touchpad. If it was purely the hardware issue though, then installing the Synaptics driver would not help. So it might still be the software thing I guess.
Please let us know if installing a completely new touchpad was of any help. -
Did you install the old driver?
Where can I find it?
I'd like to try synaptic too..
Just for see the difference..

I have the Surface Pro 3 using the new type covers and I can tell you the touchpad works much better than the one on the Dell XPS 13. I have both right now and the SP3 has non of these XPS issues. There is no jumpiness, no palm rejection issues, no Chrome two finger scrolling problems. I'm really wondering if I should keep this XPS 13 because of the touchpad. My biggest issue is the scrolling problems while using Chrome. I'm getting a lot of issues with poor palm rejection and the jumpiness. Also the XPS touchpad has a rougher and grainier feel too it whereas the Surface Touchpad is a lot smoother, which I much prefer. It's all hardware at this point as I've never had any issues with the Surface touchpads.
-
I've noticed if you keep your fingers apart when you scroll it has no problem.
-
Did you try this?
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Wisp\Touch set Bouncing to 0 -
holy ****. I think this fixed it. you are a god
edit: spoke too soon, doesn't fix it.Last edited: Mar 30, 2016 -
That's what I figured, too, initially. But I've since come to believe the Synaptics driver operates in such a way as to minimize the hardware problem. I suspect it relates to my comment about sluggish acceleration. Because small scroll movements don't cause the page to move very much, whatever causes the jump and bounce is less of an issue with Synaptics.
Check out the tutorial here.
This definitely helps, at least when I'm at my desk. The problem is, when I'm on the couch and the computer's in my lap, I still get some jumping and bouncing.
Pretty sure this doesn't actually fix the issue. But please do report back either way.Coloxim likes this. -
I just got my FHD/i5/8/256gb 9350 last week.
I'm really liking it, but there are two issues that I cant seem to figure out.
First of all, an issue that I think is related to Windows 10 Scaling (which I have at 125%).
Whenever I open the lid and wake it from sleep, first the lock screen picture doesn't fill the entire screen, but just about 80% of it, centered. So I can see the background that surrounds the log in screen even before it goes up.
Also, the same thing happens to my open windows, just that they end up in the top left corner at the same size as my lockscreen.
I've updated the graphics drivers, as they seemed like the most likely culprit, but no luck so far. Any help?
Secondly, my batterylife when the computer is in sleep is not at all what I thought it would be.
If I have it at 100%, and put it to sleep and leave it unplugged for about 8-10hrs, that uses up about 15% of my battery. Which it shouldn't. (The bios has been updated). Any tips?
Battery life in use is all that I could have wanted. -
I was wrong, it doesn't fix it. -
Minor BIOS update to 1.3.3: http://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER03596893M/1/XPS_9350_1.3.3.exe
-
It says "iris stability", anyone experiencing an increase in battery life?
-
No, but I see a 15% drop in 3dmark scores
edit: wtf, the bios update is gone from the website. -
#DellStability : Not the first time they release something in the wild buggued, looks like we're all beta-testers
...but we're not paid for that.
-
I'm thinking I should downgrade then.
-
Guess I shouldn't have been so quick to update the BIOS. Wonder why it was pulled.
-
I was getting constant lock-ups. Sometimes it recovered but half the time I had to restart. Reflashed 1.2.3 and my firestrike score went back up 100. **** Dell.
-
Luckily no issues so far for me. I'll keep monitoring it though.
-
I updated my QHD i7 last night and this happened.
-
I would like to share that replacing my touchpad has completely fixed the jumping two finger scroll issue. The new touchpad's glass texture is a bit smoother than my original, and it also feels like the cursor is behaving ever so slightly differently than before (but not in a bad way)
I can't believe I didn't do this four months ago...Bigmouth likes this. -
I bought mine from the Dell Outlet and my track pad is the slightly rough one. How did you go about getting the track pad replaced to the buttery smooth one?
-
I contacted Dell about my issue and asked them to send me a new touchpad so that I could replace it. I have to say I am really impressed with the service I have gotten through Dell's chat support from ordering to troubleshooting - no waiting at all and they are very friendly.
This new touchpad is strangely smooth and consequently even has a slightly different sheen. I love it.
I seem to have jumpy scroll PTSD because I keep wincing every time I use two fingers expecting it to go nuts, but it just works now...Bigmouth likes this. -
I'm not sure if it's the Windows insider preview or the bios update, but my CPU is stuck taking up ~5W even at 94% core c7 and 500mhz. It should be less than 1W at that point. It's killing my battery life.
Note on the insider preview btw: I had to disable the TPM module because the TML wmi process was flooding the event log and causing 10% idle cpu usage
