****, my CPU using so much more power than it should even at idle. Any ideas what could be causing this? 7W at 0% CPU load @ 600mhz!
-
Yes, my iris i7 is also using much more power than my i6500u (I have 2 xps with identical specs, except for the i7 versions).. I was hoping for an update that would fix this
-
The IRIS is only using 1.5 W though. Something happened in the last 2 days.

1.3.3 is back, apparently:

Last night at approx 1:30AM my laptop was 100% charged. Closed the lid w/o shutting down or hibernating and when I got up around 6:45AM the battery was down to 74%. Seems awfully high. Is anyone else seeing this type of behavior?

Anyone have a good starting point of how to get to know the gestures that works on the touch-screen?
I have found myself using the touchscreen more and more when reading on the laptop, but would be nice to switch tabs/pages in pdf with gestures instead of reaching for the top of the screen with my finger -
Hi guys! I am new to this forum, but I have been watching this thread since it's beginning. I am owner of XPS 13 9350 i5 FHD 128GB (Purchased in November 2015) and after 5 months of problems and complaints I finally got solution from Dell. Yesterday I got new notebook - i7 Iris QHD 512GB as a replacement for all the trouble caused by Dell. I would like to know if any of you is interested in comparison of these two configurations as I happened to have them both for a while. If so let me know which benchmarks should I run or what questions would you like me to answer. After few hours with the new model I found out this:
the trackpad has different surface, it's smoother compared to i5 version, it also works better
i7 has different battery
the touchscreen is really glossy (I have to get matte screen protector), but it's gorgeous
it runs more hot, but it's not terrible (I would like to repaste and undervolt in future)
batterylife is worse of course
Let me know if I could be useful somehow

How are your idle temps? What are your peak temps running 3dmark firestrike? Below are some charts I made for an article I'm putting out soon.

Maybe this is old news to some, but I noticed that if I set the power plan to always run the CPU at 100%, I get a lot of constant coil whine, whereas using a power scheme that uses the whole range (i.e. set minimum CPU stage to 5%) the laptop is almost always completely silent.
-
My idle temps are around mid 40°C but once I open a browser or do anything else it jumps above 50°C instantly.
I have some questions about your testing methods and UV, repaste too. May I ask you to send me PM? I can't do it as a new member right now.
BTW I am happy to report that coil whine on i7 IRIS I have is much quieter/better than on i5 where MOBO was replaced. I am very satisfied with the new unit I got. -
USB Type-C to DISPLAY PORT:
Is there a consensus about which is the best adapter to get 2560X1440 and beyond? I have two Dell Monitors: U2713H and U2713HM. I tried the Monoprice DP adapter but it does not work in neither of them. The HDMI adapter gets the full resolution at the "H" model, but not at the "HM model, which have different settings. Thus I believe if I get a DisplayPort adapter to work I'll get the full resolution. I've got a a recommendation here from a previous post for:
http://www.amazon.com/VisionTek-USB...oliid=I2OC3X5MGIUE2A&ref_=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl
But I would like to know if this is the best one (with the most successful rate, as I assume everybody is having different experiences regarding this) or if there is another with a greater success rate. I wold appreciate very much any fast response as the person who can bring the adapter for me is in the US for a very short time.
Thanks so much. -
How hard was it to replace the touchpad yourself? Did you follow any tutorials available online? Need any special tools? Also, did you confirm with Dell that doing this wouldn't void your warranty?
-
Hey all, I've been following this thread for a few days now. I'm a bit late to the party, but I've recently purchased the laptop and it should arrive on Tuesday. If it does, 8 days turn around is better than the two weeks I've heard from some (and I'd be surprised). I ordered the QHD model (16 GB, 1 TB SSD, i7). This is actually the first laptop I've ever owned myself (others borrowed/hand me downs).
I have been reading upon a few of the things that I should do upon receiving the laptop, but a few more questions popped up. Knowing that the RAM is soldered, is there any way to upgrade it in the future? Perhaps sending it to Dell and having them upgrade it? We're talking no time soon, but at some point I may want 32 GB DDR4 (correct me if it'll only support DDR3). I may or may not be checking in on the touchpad issue. I actually prefer to use a mouse instead, anybody else feel the same? I kind of wish we could have customized the laptop exactly how we wanted to, because I would have been more than happy with 1080p and better battery life.
On the note of battery life, I noticed some saying 8hrs isn't enough (for those w/ bigger battery, FHD). Do you guys really use it for that long of periods at a time and if so, can't just plug it in to charge? -
Litte Coil Whine story here:
- I tested two QHD, i7, 16GB, 512GB versions. Both had noticeable coil whine (normal distance to laptop, quiet room).
- I then tested a QHD, i5, 8GB, 256GB version. There is very slight coil whine but only noticeable when I get unnaturally close to the laptop or when I tilt my head so that my ear faces the keyboard. I can't hear anything in a dead quiet room otherwise. I kept this one.
- I installed all the updates from Dell and when I got to the Realtech Audio driver it needed to uninstall that one first. Right away I had crazy coil whine. It then proceded to install the new driver and coil whine is gone again. The Realtech Audio driver had been mentioned on here before to fix coil whine and it might just be an option for some of you.

I am by no means a computer technician, however I have tinkered with my laptops and desktops since I was a kid and made some repairs on my own. I did not follow any particular tutorial, and I would say this was 3/10 difficulty, the hardest part being removing the case bottom since it is attached with screws (easy) and clips (tricky). Then remove the speaker wires attached to the battery with bits of tape, unscrew the battery, and unscrew the touchpad. There are 2 connectors from which to remove cables along the way.
Despite knowing the location of the clips and proceeding very carefully, I still managed to break two of them. They are made of stupidly thin plastic, and as far as I can tell serve no purpose (the case still aligns and seals perfectly in these areas with just the screws), so I am not worried. FYI the XPS 15 is similarly designed all around but omits these clips and uses screws only to hold the bottom plate on.
I don't see any reason why this would void my warranty, unless it is determined that my repair caused a failure of some sort. If my screen fails six months from now, that would not be related and I don't think that would be a problem. Also they did not mention any issues with my warranty and didn't mind one bit when I asked for the part. If you like to tinker and take things apart go for it, otherwise maybe send it in. Also, use the proper drivers and don't strip the screws!Bigmouth likes this. -
What kind of gpu clocks do owners of the i7 6560u get? The specs say 300MHz base clock that can turbo up to 1.05GHz. Using GPU-Z, my gpu clock is always at 300MHz and the memory clock is always at 933.3MHz regardless of load. Same thing reported by intel extreme tuning utility.
Edit: Just updated the bios to 1.3.3 and now the gpu boosts above the base 300MHz. This laptop has been out for half a year and until two days ago didn't have a properly functioning gpu...? I wonder if this was the cause of problems in linux.
I saw 950MHz when the laptop was cool. But dropped significantly after any load. I got 24fps on cinebench opengl before the bios update, now I get 48fps. Still not what it could be since it settled at ~700MHz during the bench.Last edited: Apr 3, 2016 -
This is a typical load under gaming:
I had that problem with the GPU not clocking up as well, but it doesn't happen anymore.
Note that during load, the CPU will be about 1.4Ghz and the GPU 600-700 because of the 15W TDP.speedracer likes this. -
I wouldn't hold my breath on being able to upgrade the RAM. It would mean a new motherboard + labour charges to have it done. Which would run several hundred dollars, usually it's not worth the expense vs selling and buying a 32GB model. Not many companies offer to do such upgrades. With 16 GB you should be fine, most people don't come close to filling that much.
Congrats on your first computer!, very nice specs. My first was a twinhead laptop: 386, 25 mhz cpu, 4 MB RAM, 60 MB hard drive, 10" monochrome screen (retail price $3,500).alexhawker likes this. -
Hi everyone,
my XPS 13 9350 is 1 month old by now and started making a strange cracling sound. I could hear it clearly when I was scrolling with the touchpad, typing (even a single letter) and passing with the mouse arrow over a web page, especially when over something clickable.
I rembered that everything started after installing an update package:
Realtek High definition audio ALC3266 Driver 6.0.1.7737_A04
It's in the Dell website and it is recommended.
I uninstalled it, and know everything is ok.
I just posted this in case it may help someone.playvideoondemand and Bigmouth like this. -
Thanks! I understand not any time soon will I need more than 16 GB. It's just me always wanting to future proof and have this laptop last a very long time.
The current laptop I use for school is an HP Envy DV7-7250. It isn't bad per se, but my dad has asked for it back (tired of the POS laptop I'm having him use for now). I think the first laptop I've ever used also had a 10" screen. -
Hello!
any confirmation that FHD and qHD has same lcd connectors?
what is dell p/n of 6560u mobo? -
Anyone have an 9350 with FHD and iris processor? I'm getting less than 8 hours of battery life.. I should be getting 13-15+ with light browsing. I know that the iris draws more power but THAT much more? I've cleaned installed and updated the BIOS/drivers etc etc. I've tried on all power plans with different settings. When I only have a PDF open with 30% brightness i have a battery draw of 5-6W+...
Is anyone else experiencing a better battery life than I am? -

I only have an i5 and 1080p and I'm sure I never get 13-15hrs of battery life on one charge. Maybe 8-10, but I always make it through the day with plenty of battery left so I haven't been able to fully drain it unless I'm streaming youtube or twitch.
Manufacturer's stated battery life is overrated, as usual. -
I may have given my XPS 13 IRIS a 45W TDP. It runs HOT. I will test performance tonight and see if it really works, and what the temps are.

Hmmm having a bit of a problem today not really sure what's up, it's come out of the blue - haven't messed with any power settings or anything.
Basically my laptop is saying Fully charged 100%, however when I remove it the indicator immediately drops to 95%, upon plugging it back it in jumps straight back to 100%. The battery wear is 4% but it's been at 4% for a few weeks now and haven't had this problem before. Anyone know what's up?
Edit: I have recently been leaving my laptop charging as I just keep the adapter plugged in on my desk, I then sometimes take it to bed for an hour or two where it'll either run off the battery, or I'll plug it in again. I also have a cooling stand connected to the laptop via USB - I leave this running all the time when I use the laptop.Last edited: Apr 4, 2016 -
That's weird, i have a i7 6500u 1080p as well and i get 12h+ with light browsing, 18 if only using word and 10 if watching youtube.

I have the exact same issue as yours and most probably others too but they simply haven't noticed since its a very faint sound that you will only notice at a dead silent environment. I thought it was coil whine but I guess its not? I'm curious, you uninstalled that Realtek driver but what did you install as replacement? -
playvideoondemand Notebook Consultant
could you post a screenshot of your battery run times?
1) Run Command Prompt as Administrator by right clicking it.
2) Type powercfg batteryreport
3) Its probably saved here : C:\WINDOWS\system32\battery-report.html.
I have yet to see a 12 hour run time on actual use. I'm assuming you've only seen that number from the battery estimate by hovering your mouse to battery icon on the task bar. That method is unreliable and downright inaccurate. -
Guys.. I've a big problem with win10 login.. After I put the password I've to wait more than 30seconds..

Have you done a clean install? I have the same model and noticed my battery life took a big leap after doing so. I now routinely go two days between charges with light use.
-
Well, as expected, I received one of the laptops with coil whine. Every fix in the book has not worked for me, the only thing I have not tried was a fresh install but I am thinking that doesn't do anything.
It's one of these things where I don't really want to return it because of how nice of a laptop it is, but it may end up driving me nuts later down the road.Last edited: Apr 5, 2016 -
I'm in the exact same boat as you.
I called dell support and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. The tech was pretty down to earth and wasn't just going off a script or checklist. Once he could tell that I knew my way around a computer it was kind of like trouble shooting a problem with a friend. He/We ended up deciding that sending a replacement was the best option. I just checked my order status and it looks like they're upgrading my i5 to an i7 and my Win 10 Home to Pro. I originally bought it off dell outlet so if the one I'm getting is coil whine free I'm getting a great deal. If not its going to be hard to send it back.
It's worth it to call them and see what you can do. If nothing else but to get it in the system that there's a problem with coil whine and you're not happy about it. So down the road if it's driving you crazy it will be easier to resolve.alexhawker likes this. -
I already have i7 and Windows Pro, though that's awesome what they're doing for you (probably because they know the issue is so common). I've heard that replacing the AC Outlet may or may not even fix the issue, nor would them replacing the unit. If I don't have the laptop on charge, or while on charge it's < 90%, I hear no Coil Whine. It's something I'll have to get used to as I'm used to having my laptop plugged in 24-7.
-
If it is an iris i7 it will significantly reduce your battery life (1h+), just so you know! I was also upgraded and now I'm kinda regretting it, as I'm not a pro-user and I would rate battery life above faster CPU.
-
I have i7/256 GB 9350 and Maxxaudio pro enables itself everytime i launch Dell Audio.Has anyone else experienced this?
-
Hi guys, long time lurker here.
I'm about to pull the trigger on a XPS i7 6500u 512gb 16gb QHD+ but before buy it I remember in the thread someone stated that Dell has changed the trakpad in the newer i7 6560u version. Is that true?
I'd buy the i7 6560u but based on the comments I see here it's a downgrade in battery life. I've also considered getting the i5 QHD+ for better performance, but there's no 16gb 512gb version...
BTW my intention is to repast and undervolt the xps as soon as it arrives. Let's hope coil whine won't be a deal-breaker on my unit.
Thanks -
I have to say, from my limited use with the trackpad (because I simply prefer mouse), I have had no issues yet, no jumpiness.
-
I can't compare it to the older one in actually using it because I've only used the new trackpad, but it still jumps around, though it's a smoother texture.
-
I've @ very slow login... Someone can help me, please?

Yes I've done a couple of clean installs when I got my laptop(trying to solve coil whine when I got my laptop a couple months ago), and on top of that it's a microsoft signature edition so it should be clean already.
Very interesting - I've never done this before. Here's the battery estimate at the end of the page for my i5/8gb/128gb/fhd -
Hi,
Just got my XPS 13 9350-4853 two days ago. I managed to do a clean Windows 7 (64 bit) install but the WiFi-drivers I downloaded from Dell's website won't install. Can anyone guide me to the correct drivers? I haven't opened the case (yet) and the software I've used won't identify the wifi chip used...
---
EDIT: I just found another 9350 download section ( http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/xps-13-9350-laptop/drivers?os=w764 ) which had different WiFi drivers so I believe one them will work with my XPS too. I'll test them after work...
---
Which Dell applications would you guys recommend to install? I just need the keyboard buttons (ie. brightness up/down) and devices to work properly.
I've installed the chipset driver and 1-2 other Dell's applications/drivers and for some reason I can't select "sleep" action anywhere (it's not available in e.g. "when the lid is closed"-action menu or "what to do when battery level is critical"-menu). Anyone familiar with this issue?Last edited: Apr 7, 2016 -
Just out of curiosity, why did you do a clean install? The Dell "bloat" is pretty minimal and quite useful.
-
And it's pretty easy to just uninstall it.
Also, why Windows 7? -
But does dell update work?

Glad I found this forum, and this section. I have a question about the XPS 13 9350 (1080p) with i5/8gb.
Going to be traveling a lot, and would love something portable to play Minecraft (not vanilla, that runs fine) with. My current Skylake i3 / 4gb / HD 520 struggles with it. I'm playing Minecraft Feed The Beast Infinity (I basically never stop playing it). This modpack requires a lot of power to run well. My i3 manages to get 20-40fps on a fresh world with Optifine installed. Sadly, as I've been playing FTB for a long time, this is unplayable because soon as I start to build more tech and get new worlds running, this will weaken the performance even more. Best way to put it, is the minimum FPS you get in a new world, half that and that will be your late-game average performance. The addition of a faster processor and twice the ram should help a lot. problem is, without any videos specifically of these specs in Feed The Beast it makes it difficult to judge.
"But Bob, you can get the Dell Inspiron i7/Asus gaming laptop for the same price!" True, but I will be completely mobile for months, and could potentially not be able to charge for days at a time (I plan to get the battery extender charger thing dell offers to help with this). Power aside, two and a half pounds is easier to lug around than five. Plus, that beautiful XPS screen is keeping me determined to ask for help in the matter.
If any Minecraft players out there would like to grab the modpack and give it a go to tell me how the performance is, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
