What is your current machine's 3dmark 13 firestrike score? Graphics, physics, and combined? I have a lot of specific data from my xps 13 iris

Sorry to say, but I just returned it to Amazon. Kind of why I'm asking so much here on these forums, so I can avoid having to do that again. Don't like returning things if it's avoidable.

Well my guess is, just off specs, that your old machine was about 50% slower than an i7/iris combination.

Those aren't the specs I'm looking to buy. These are:
    • Intel Core i5-6200u 2.5 GHz Processor
    • 8 GB RAM Included; 16 GB Maximum
    • 128 GB SSD Storage; Optical Drive Not included
    • 13.3 Inch FHD (1920x1080 pixels) LED-lit Screen
Edit: Oh I get it, you are just providing that number based off of your data.

Oh. Well that would perform maybe... 15% faster? And 15 fps * 1.15 = unpleasant

Short answer: I've tried Windows10 for a month or two and I hated it. It's Windows 7 + Xubuntu dualboot combination for me.

    Ah, gotcha.

BTW, I just looked at my Battery Report, and it estimates 10:54:29 since the OS install.

ETA: I noticed those numbers have been trending downwards since the clean install ~two weeks ago. I was at 11:35:39 right after and am now at 10:48:49. I wonder if it continues declining steadily after each clean install...

You've got good numbers. 10 hours is my max battery run time with mixed use. I have 100% brightness & "Dell" power plan/profile all the time though. How about yours?

I would not update to the latest audio drivers on Dell's site. They totally messed up the speakers with tons of popping, cracking, and noise.

I went to realtek's website and found the generic one's from mid-2015 that fixed the issue.

Finally got around to testing FTB. Infinity Evolved modpack, to be specific. Fullscreen bordered on my 1080p screen.

On Fast graphics and 8 chunk render distance on a newly created singleplayer world, I'm getting between 40-50fps in the wilderness. Power option is set to "balanced" and laptop is unplugged from the wall. This is without optifine installed.

With Optifine, I'm getting around 50-60. Standing still yields around 70. Spawning ~200 chickens drops the framerate to 20-30fps. Not ideal, but playable. I did tweak the optifine settings.

Weirdly enough the multi-core rendering doesn't work, but keep in mind I am using Intel's beta graphics drivers. I'll also note that the default 2GB of allocated memory should be increased to 3GB as I hit the 2GB cap quite often. Changing the power plan to high performance and plugging in the laptop did not yield any significant performances increases from what I can tell. Also, gaming unplugged will drain your battery rather quick - about 15 minutes of testing and I was already at 87%. Hope this helped.

I did a clean install of vanilla Windows 10, so I don't have the Dell Power Manager, just the generic control panel settings. I have it set to the Balanced power plan and keep my screen at 20-30% brightness.

Yeah multi-core rendering causes a lot of issues for me as well, so I use the middle-option on that one, I forget what it's called. Thanks so much for your thorough testing. This is great news as this looks definitely playable. A render distance of 8 is huge, I'm fine playing on mobile with about 4, which sees a large fps increase! Your initial test compared to the i3 and 4GB of memory is about 30-40fps better. So much better.

If you still happen to have it installed, could you tell me if there's any difference between using 3GB and 4GB of ram in the FTB settings? I always hear FTB runs better with 4. My main computer is so fast that I can't notice a difference. Also could you use high performance + plugged in with a render distance of only 4 chunks?. How does this run?

I don't plan on gaming while being unplugged. Does it even make a difference? I don't know enough about laptops to know.

Sorry to go crazy with questions. I know it might seem strange to buy a laptop for something so oddly specific. Feel free to add me on Steam, I can gift you a cheap game for your troubles: http://steamcommunity.com/id/5966069

    EDIT:
The specs state it has the Intel HD 5500, but I assumed the Skylake processors used the HD 520. Is this labeled incorrectly, or are there different Skylake versions that use the HD 520 and HD 5500?

Hey I have quite a big problem I was wondering if someone could help me out.

Basically when I close my laptop lid or press the power button briefly it puts the computer to sleep, upon opening the lid or pressing it again for some reason my computer doesn't display anything for 5-10 seconds then reboots. It doesn't give me a chance to wait to see if anything comes up, it just reboots itself.

Same problem happened a few months ago and fixed it with a system restore and defaulting the power and batter settings (I never changed these in the first place). Then it happened about a week ago again and I fixed it using the same method. Tried doing it again now and its not working anymore, the problem still persists.

If anyone could help fix this it'd be great! I have no idea why it suddenly starts happening out of the blue, especially when I haven't really changed anything.

Edit: Even my system restores don't seem to show any different. They just state 'eDellRoot Removal'... I don't even know what that is.

The regular mobile skylake cpus have HD 520. HD 5500 is for broadwell I think.

Usually gaming while plugged in does make a difference, as on battery the laptop will often limit the CPU's tdp and boost clocks to extend battery life and reduce heat output. It's more noticeable in gaming laptops with dedicated graphics chips, but as I stated I didn't really notice any significant difference with the integrated HD 520 on my xps 13.

I'll get to testing 4 chunk render distance later today.

I have been getting Bluetooth related errors in the system event log: BTHUSB: The local Bluetooth adapter has failed in an undetermined manner and will not be used. The driver has been unloaded.

This is a core i7 9350 with 16gb ram and 512g ssd. This happens with both stock image and clean-installed Windows 10 and it only happens when the computer wakes up from sleep. Apparently when this happens, Bluetooth devices stops working for a while and then the driver recovers.

    Maybe I have a defective Bluetooth/WiFi card?

Upped the allocated ram usage to 4GB. More RAM = more things loaded at once. Adding more ram shouldn't increase performance unless you're hitting your max allocation.

High performance, plugged in, 4 chunk render distance. Turned off a lot of things in optifine except for fog.

hey guys, could use some help if you can please,

i recently bought xps 13 9350 i5/8gbram/128gb ssd microsoft signature edition version. I had some issues with microsft updates couldnt fixed it and decided to do a clean installation which was completed successfuly. Installed all relevant drivers and stuff. However i have this issue when i close the lid, it should put the computer on sleep mode. But when i try to wake it screen stays black for like 15-20 secs. when i hit a button keyboard illuminates, but screen does not.. So after 20 sec it automaticly starts again like restarted. Files or apps that should be active are not, like the computer is restarted not on sleep. How can i fix it? It is really a bother.

    Thanks in advance

Does somebody use kaspersky antivirus 2016 with this laptop? I have to shut down my av because its too slow to navigate on the web with the av enabled.
And when i shut it down it run perfectly smooth, i really dont understand and i paid the licence but can't use it
I absolutely can't let the av enabled and have to enable it when i download a file then i shut it down after i scanned the file.
I have one Intel Nuc with Windows 10 too and the same antivirus and no problem at all!

Sorry for asking something that might have been already discussed.
Is the RAM upgradable to 32 Gb in the Core i7/16GB RAM/1TB SSD, touch model or is it soldered in the mainboard?
If not, do you know whether such an option will be available for the XPS 13 in the near future?
    Thanks

You have been victimized by marketing. Norton and Kaspersky are heavy and bloated antivirus software. I am using AVG Free and it uses very small resource and is very fast. Also using Ad Block on Chrome helps a lot.

Microsoft security essentials also comes bundled with Windows 10, which is often enough when paired with something like malware bytes.

There were a few posts recently on sleep problems. My iris QHD also had problems resuming properly after sleeping. It finally gave up last week and I couldn't get my XPS to display anything. As it was unusable and seemed like a motherboard issue a new one has been fitted today.

So far so good, the computer resumes from sleep ok.

I just bought an XPS 13 9350, trying to decide if I should return or keep it. The two problems I have are:
-coil whine (I hear the majority of users have this, is it true?)
-My battery came out of the box with 7% wear (the computer charges to 107% though according to the battery app, not sure if something is wrong with the software making it display that)

I'm just worried about it holding up for years. Can anyone who had this computer for a little while steer me in a direction? Thanks

I have it since the first day he came out and no coil whine or battery problem. I had very light coil whine in the beginning but that dissapeared with all the drivers update i did.
And the battery Life is just amazing. 10 Hours easy.

Had the exact same problem intermittently, after yet another system restore and defaulting the power and sleep settings again, seems to be fixed, although I don't know how long this will last. Getting a bit sick of having my programs uninstalled. It's weird, this didn't happen for ages until about 1-2months of use, completely out of nowhere, now it seems to come and go every couple of weeks.

Could anyone possibly provide any insight into what's causing this?

Yes - you can only get up to 16 GB of RAM, but you must choose that option during the selection process.

It's quite unfortunate, because we have the know that we will never be able to get DDR4 / 32 GB, like you can with the XPS 15.

@mos - Yeah unfortunate there was no FHD 16 GB option :(. Windows is far from perfect scaling on 4K (and who knows when MS will work on it).

Mine 9350 has started to glitching hard. It could freeze completely and only power off helps or doesnt turn on - blinked 4 times white and 2 amber led light. And Standart windows memory check never passed - just hangs on about 23% overall progress. I have tried to flash 1.2.3 and 1.3.3 BIOS versions - doesn't help.

Mine has just started doing this out of the blue after owning it for 5 months. Haven't managed to get it stop doing it yet; every time I sleep it when it wakes up the screen is black for ~20s and then it reboots.

Started this morning - no driver or windows updates for the last few days, so I am at a loss to what triggered this.

Yep same here. Have you tried a system restore to a point where you think it wasn't occurring? That seemed to help me. I also defaulted the power settings so that might've done something too. Same, no windows or driver updates so not sure why it's occurring, I've been fine for the past week-ish touch wood, but I get the feeling the problem will creep up again soon.

I did a hard shutdown (pressing and holding power button) and that seemed to clear the condition (a normal shutdown wasn't enough). Which is the same solution to the other issue I sometimes get, where it instantly turns back on whenever I sleep or shutdown the laptop. So I am wondering whether they have a similar cause.

I get this issue from time to time as well, have no idea what's causing it. The last time, even running command prompt > shutdown /s, it shut down, and immediately restarted.

Yes, most users have a degree of coil whine. My personal impression is that it is worst when the CPU doesn't clock down, i.e. when plugged in and in a high performance mode, so I changed the plan to always have a 5% minimum CPU state, even when plugged in, and it's not bothering me much, usually.

I've had the same thing with the battery charging to 106%. It went away after about six weeks, reported no wear and charged to 100%. No clue what it's about, but apparently it wasn't actual wear.

Yeah that doesn't work for me either. The only way I can stop it from waking up is a hard poweroff by holding the power button down. I have only had it happen 3 or 4 times though.

My dell xps 13 9350 arrived today. Straight out of the box the touchpad is freezing. Usually I can use the keyboard still, but sometimes I have to hard reset to get it working again most of the time I just wait 20 seconds and it starts working again.

Do you think this can be fixed through bios updated etc, or is it a case of sending it back immediately?

To be honest you with there's a lot of problems with this laptop and unfortunately it seems like a half-finished product. I am starting to feel slight regrets about purchasing it but at least I got it from the outlet so I didn't pay full price.

I'd say it with a problem as big as trackpad issues then you're probably best off returning it, avoid the hassle with warranty and trying to fix things yourself, you really shouldn't have to go through any of that at this price point. If you then want to take another punt and purchase another one, that's up to you - I'd personally say to just look for a different brand though, having seen so many problems on the forums and having experienced a few myself.

OK, I cannot take it anymore.

The noise when typing or moving the (external) mouse, is just too much in a quiet environment. I am almost ready to just return this device. I have tried: 1) Turning off the backlight 2) Running at full brightness. I have the latest BIOS available. I don't have it plugged in either. Has anyone come across a reliable fix?

I even tested playing a video and turning the volume all the way down - not touching the keyboard or mouse while the video is playing and I could hear the noise :(

XPS 13 is by far the best form factor notebook I've ever had, but:

    - USB Type-C sucks big time. At least so far. I don't see any real life gain using it, and there are many drawbacks. Maybe next generation with native support may be good, but not this generation. Hubs may work or not, adapters are finicky.

    - Fact is USB 3.0 ports were not good in previous Windows/Intel generations, but now that they are native they work very well. Thus, no use for USB hubs in Type-C. Charger in our XPS 13 is quite small, so no use again for the Type-C.

    - And the there are the video adapters! What a headache. I am in my third, my THIRD different DisplayPort adapter, all with some reports of success from others with the XPS 13, but I had NONE. The HDMI adapter works OK (just OK, because I need to take my monitors out of their sleep manually, they don't wake up automatically when the XPS itself gets out of sleep, unlike any other older notebook - and even then sometimes it has random behavior). But some monitors don't have greater than 1080p resolution via HDMI and need DP to go full resolution. Thus, with HDMI I have success with my 2713H monitor, but not with its lesser sibling 2713HM, both Dell monitors... And never had any of these issues with my now more than 3 years old XPS 14 with mini DP.

    - I had to disable Bluetooth as I was getting a lot BSOD out of the bluetooth driver BTWAUDIO.SYS from the Dell 1820. Ordered the Intel 7265, let's see if this is solved and if I get better WIFI.

    - and now, out of nowhere, again with the Sleep problem...

Well... Sorry for my rant, I guess the sleep issue coming back pissed me off. The XPS 13 in general, as said, is amazing, but some of those things look like a half backed product in a very expensive package (in Brazil I pay more than double in dollars what US pays...).

That said, if anyone can help with the Display Port issue, I would still be grateful. Never got an answer about this here, but who knows... Thanks.
