    Thanks @Undervolt92

In that "tweet", Frank Azor narrowed down GPU options for 9570:

    No nVidia 1060
Performance "will be closer to 1050ti"

That gives us strong evidence of potential GPUs. Also indicates 9570 is an incremental evolution of 9560.

The 1060 performs a lot better but costs a lot more and requires much better thermal and power solutions than the current XPS form factor can offer.

I will assume HQ 6-core with significanty reduced clocks...

Does that mean we see the same GPU/CPU combo we’re getting in the new XPS 9575 2-1 ?

    That or either a Max Q 1050ti.
    This is taken from notebookcheck

    Performance

The performance of the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti can vary quite a lot depending on the cooling performance of the laptop. Nvidia states that the Max-Q variant should be about 10 to 15% slower than a regular GTX 1050 Ti for laptops. Therefore, the GPU is most suited for Full HD and high quality settings for games of 2016.

    Power Consumption

The power consumption of the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with Max-Q design is rated at 40 to 46 Watt and therefore a lot lower than a regular GTX 1050 Ti for laptops (53 Watt). This means that the Max-Q GTX 1050 Ti is also suited for thin and light laptops.

If you ask me, Dell need to fix their QC and cooling before they release anything. Even if it is a Core G, they need to get the cooling right before deciding on thickness and weight. If it is Coffee Lake-H and a 1050Ti Max-Q, the cooling will be even more critical if want to prevent it from being a hot, throttling mess.

Those "news" really arent that great.

Yes the 1050Ti is a jump over the 1050 but not big enough for me to spend more money.
Right now I am moving away from getting a 9570 and instead snatch a 9560 when the deals come online. Just no idea when that is and how to make sure not to miss them :p

This feels like the ASUS Zenbook Pro all over again, because that laptop was also rumored to have a GTX 1060 in it. If there is a lot less throttling, and the price remains reasonable for the FHD 16gb/512gb model, I might be okay with a small GPU upgrade. I don't really need a GTX 1060. The GTX 1050 in the current model would have been fine for me if the performance was up to par with other laptops with a GTX 1050. Did not think about the Max-Q GTX 1050 TI, which might be the GPU they will use in the next XPS 15. I wonder how it compares to a GTX 1050, with both running on more or less the same machines.

Probably minimal. The standard 1050Ti is roughly 20% more powerful than the 1050. Take away the ~10-15% performance decrease of the Max Q version, and you are left with a barely noticable 5-10% increase. I mean, it's better than nothing, but it's not going to make the difference.

Is your 1050 not up to par with other laptops? Most 1050s are 2GB versions, while the XPS' is a 4GB version. And, while undervolted (-100mV), I can personally overclock my 1050 by about 150MHz core, 220MHz memory.

Haha, notebookcheck wrote an article of this laptop and they still have the info's pretty much from this topic. Although they assume just an 1050 Max Q graphics. I say that have to be the 1060 Max Q, otherwise the upgrade will not worth from the current model...

Seeing as how Frank Azor said it won't be a 1060 Max Q because of thermal issues, and the fact that a 1050 Max Q doesn't make any sense. I think we can assume it is going to be either a 1050TI Max Q (they exist) or, depending on when Dell plan's on releasing the 9570, we may see a 2050 / 2050TI (Max Q). It would fit with Frank Azor telling us that the new GPU will be in the 1050TI range. Which both the 1050TI Max Q would be, as well as a 2050.

A 1050 Ti MQ wouldn't really be an upgrade over a 1050 non-MQ - not a worthwhile one, anyway. You're looking at 10-20% better performance than the regular 1050 from a 1050 Ti MQ.

If it's a Pascal GPU, I'll likely keep my laptop another for another year. Hopefully the webcam is fixed by then too.

I'm already quite upset that Coffee Lake-H requires a microcode update and performance penalty to protect against Spectre and Meltdown.

Show me a 2050 Max-Q and maybe I'll bite the bullet.

So I think we can guess the config of the XPS 9570 with a high degree of certainty.

From a practical perspective, I see this a third, slightly "evolutionary" iteration with minor refreshing CPU, GPU, and motherboard (driven by Intel & nVidia's development cycle). I don't see Dell changing chassis design significantly (else undercut new 13" and 2-in-1, plus the 13" seems to be the industrial design leader now).

I'm not particularly thrilled about more cores at lower clocks for my applications. The GPU "upgrade" is meh but if Dell improves thermals could improve the experience for average users. I think Dell has the opportunity to:

    - tweak theramals,
    - redesign the copper heatsink and add another screw,
    - bolster the vrm solution and that pesky "76*c ambient sensor",
    - make a few port upgrades (e.g. HDMI, TB3 to x4, etc.),
    - optional screen with better latency & ghosting performance
    - move the fingerprint scanner to the power button,
    - sort out the headphone jack, and
    - tell us coil whine is gone (lol).

I would expect a couple of these items will be "addressed" in the 9570 and the others ignored. As this laptop is on its third itiration, it should be relatively sorted at release. But you never know with the wild Texans at Dell. Recent "history" informing this:

    > Following the disaster release of the 9550, after a year or so, Dell eventually sorted out the drivers and that laptop is quite good.

    > One could argue the release of the 9560 was much smoother, with much better sorted BIOS and drivers; but Dell didn't take the opportunity to make significant engineering improvements. Except the GPU represented a major improvement but required the user to "fix" thermals with hardware tweaks. On balance the heatsink was improved (warpage above VRAM on the 9550) but the poor screw configuration was a step backwards.

    > Neither the 9550 nor the 9560 is perfect, but both are quite good with user tweaks and the ability to ignore a few "issues". One important change is that in 2018, there are some good alternatives to the XPS. Hopefully that competition encourages Dell. . .

    For instance...?

If they will make a XPS similar to Gigabyte Aero 15W (GTX 1060, slim PSU) mantaining the XPS design, keyboard and a decent display with no ghosting and discrete response times... It would be a porn-laptop IMHO

I asked Frank Azor on twitter is the 9570 likely to be out in march, can you do a faster refresh rate screen. As I tried the 9560 and couldn't live with the ghosting on it.

He replied no sorry, so guess that rules out the 9570 for me.

I hope the thermals, speakers, and quality control are improved. I am guessing that the matte screen option will be gone, similar to the XPS 13 9370, where the FHD display is a glossy glass covered display, edge to edge. That would probably fix the bezel popping/peeling off issue with the FHD variant of the current XPS 15. For display, I'm guessing we'll probably be seeing 400 nits+. Ghosting does not bother me, for what I used computers for. A GTX 1050-1050 Ti level of performance would be fine if the machine actually performed at that level.

As for alternatives, I still am not seeing any that stand out to me. The Lenovo Ideapad 720s 15 inch is priced very well but aspects like the keyboard layout with the cramped number pad bug me. The Zenbook Pro has build quality issues, only average battery life, soldered RAM, and a somewhat dim display. And the Razer Blade...you already know.

Despite the keyboard not being what I would call amazing, the layout of the current XPS 15 was one of the stronger aspects of the machine. So many laptops in the 15 inch space shoehorn in number pads, unfortunately. The new model should improve the keyboard to a degree, given the improved keyboard of the new XPS 13.

Is there any word from Azor about battery capacity on the upcoming XPS 15?

That FHD screen has been in production for a long time. So maybe Dell will be forced to update. I wouldn't expect miracles, however.

Frank Azor said the 9570 will not have a 1060 Max Q. He did confirm GTX and June release. So 1050TI Max Q is a reasonable guess.

The XPS chassis have very little volume for cooling. These style choices reduce volume:

    - very thin
    - small bezels
    - slanted corners

    Given the 2018 XPS13 & XPS 15 2-in-1 industrial designs, I don't see a change in the 2018 9570 form factor.

You can see the crazy-extreme thermal mods posted here to control thermal throttling of the 1050. So the concept of a 1060 in this form factor is a bridge too far. . .

The hope for a GTX 1060 was some early wishful thinking based on some Reddit post. If you need a thin and light GTX 1060 gaming laptop, you may be better off looking at the Gigabyte Aero series. As for the FHD screen, I think it will be upgraded, based on what happened with the XPS 13 9370. Colour gamut will probably be the same, but aspects like brightness should receive a boost, although this aspect was not a weakness of either the current XPS 15 FHD or 4k. I liked the display of the FHD XPS 15 personally, as it was bright and had good contrast. However, ghosting improvements are not likely, given the demographic this laptop series is targeting. I do hope the bezel peeling and popping problems of the FHD model are resolved. A downside of the upcoming model may be the elimination of the matte FHD option, given that it's been replaced on the XPS 13 9370 with a glossy FHD screen. I don't have a preference between glossy and matte overall, so it doesn't really affect my purchasing decisions.

It's not going to happen, but realistically, the XPS 15 could handle it. With an undervolt to 0.93 volts for my 1050 and a small overclock (1750MHz) and repasting, my 1050 runs at a cool 58 degrees under full load (raytrace rendering in Blender), no CPU load. In a combined CPU and GPU load (rendering in Solidworks Visualize), my CPU runs at 75 degrees and my GPU atr 65 degrees.

For gaming, it might throttle. But arguably, the XPS 15 is not ment as a gaming device, but as a workhorse. In those cases, where you do have GPU-only workloads, the 1060 would still be a massive improvement. And in the cases where you do have a gaming type workload, the 1060 might throttle to 1050 / 1050Ti speeds. It would still be a net gain in terms of gaming, and a huge gain in terms of professional workloads.

Excellent news. The soldered wifi chip of the XPS 13 9370 had me concerned that Dell would do the same thing with this laptop. Likewise with RAM, where some competing laptops like the Razer Blade and the ASUS Zenbook Pro UX550 have soldered RAM.

May - June-ish from what Frank Azor told us so far. As for HDR support, maybe on paper, but it's going be fake HDR. No laptop display will output 1000 nits for true HDR, nor 600 nits for semi-true HDR.

Well I dont know if id term it fake though. The nits is simply for contrast to black. The higher the brightness the more black, black looks, giving better dynamic range.

The Yoga Carbon 600 nits 2k panel looks 98% as good as an Amoled with blacks being just off due to having such a high brightness. Clearly its not hdr10 compliant technically, but it runs HDR and is set up to do so.

I think the whole HDR standards between dolby and hdr10 is a bit fudged anyway.

Either way 600 nits HDR on a 2k panel at 13" is going to look better than a 400 nits 4k non HDR panel imo. 4k was such a gimmick for notebooks imo. 1440p was best suited for notebooks imo.

I really need something now, Im thinking if they dont update the Ipad Pro in a couple of days I might go with that. Im also planning on a Note 8 phone which will be nice for bed, Amoled and definitely 1000 nits HDR.

I find it hard to justify spending 3k on any 13" notebook that doesnt have dGPU, hence why I was wanting the next 15 as it should have an improved GPU and be HDR compliant (whether its half baked or not, will have to see how much they can get out of the panel)

I agree that the contrast ratio could also be achieved with deeper blacks. But then 8 bits may not be enough, or else banding might become an issue.

Does anyone have clear requirements for HDR in Win10, and Youtube & Chrome HDR demos for instance? What is actually required for the display (brightness, contrast ratio, bitdepth, gamut)? Is a pro GPU required for graphics & video processing (10bit output in OpenGL), does LR still not support it? I understand it should be supported NVidia GTX since the 900 series in DirectX but not in most laptops where the output goes from the iGPU?
And how is the current status in stills & video cameras for own compliant content capture? I'm aware of some cameras recording enough DR with S-log type preview, not aware of any with an HDR display... phones?

I mean, something more specific than

Could be just that win10 hdr is fairly new I guess. But talk about jumping on the bandwagon lol.

Ive been shooting HDR stills for years, but I have no experience with HDR in video, my cameras dont even the option, they have different tonality and s-log features etc.

in my mind HDR was a way to get OLED like look out of LCDs and to enable more dynamic range, Im not sure if the panels that meet p3 etc get over saturated like OLED phones. i know OLED notebooks all of them have a feature to turn down the saturation. As far as dynamic range goes I think it will look better but its not going to look as good as the hdr10 standard which they are all failing but acheiving some how. The Galaxy S8 got its stamp because it can boost to 1000 nits, but I wonder, does it use 1000 nits during a movie or was that just to get compliant. Either way OLED and HDR is OARsome.

The Galaxy S8 actually boosts to 1000 nits whenever you open a HDR video (say, a Youtube HDR video)

I am waiting for the xps 15 2 in 1 to be available. I just compared pricing (cdn dollars) between the maxed out xps 15 and macbook pro 15. Apple are wacky! The xps maxed out has 32gb of ram and a 3.8 ghz processor. The apple comparable can only get 16gb of ram and a 3.1 ghz processor. The price of the xps was a reasonable for a high end device 2799.00 and the macbook pro was a budget blowing 4199.00 Slower machine, no touch, crappy MacOS. NOPE. XPS is a much better device ...

Crappy MacOS? I would take anytime instead crappy Windows 10. No touch? That is also a positive thing. A good laptop only needs mouse and keyboard. Touch is for tablets... Otherwise for rest of the hardware, yes XPS is pretty awesome.

They have the same CPU i7-7700 with base clock 2.8GHz and Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz and 6MB cache.
But MacBook have a option for i7-7920HQ with 3.1-4.1GHz and 8MB cache.
XPS 15 is great laptop and cheaper than MBP, but not better.
They both have some pros and cons.

Please tell me how the xps 15 is NOT better than the MBP? it's much faster at doing the same tasks, it has touch interface, its hundreds of dollars cheaper, it runs windows instead of crappy MacOS. Shall I continue?

I use touch ALOT on my desktop and laptop. Editing photos and videos is much faster using touch, as it designing custom parts and vehicles for my business. Way better than mac. and I don't have to buy extra drawing tablet crap. it's right on my screens.

How about we get this thread back on track and stop the Mac vs PC stuff? Kojack you're like the king of this man, just let it go.

    You have a wrong guess.
I'm using both Windows and Mac laptops, and both have pros and cons.
XPS15 is great, but not better one.
I'm very exited about new XPS 15 with 6 core Coffee Lake H and that's why I'm watching this thread, but without blind statements and bringing Holy-War.
