Just got the "Shipped" status along with a tracking number (which is non-existent in Fed-Ex's servers).
Cautiously optomistic.

Smooth_J, have you gotten a tracking number yet? Mine has been stuck on Ship Complete/Finalizing Production/Delivery Preparation since Friday. I tried the trick using the order number as the reference number with FedEx and UPS, but neither of them have anything.
On a humorous note, I spoke to a helpful Dell rep yesterday who confidently assured me that my laptop "is in the shipyard" where they are "preparing to load it onto a ship". -
Yes I did. Mine was stuck in that stage for at least 3 days before I saw something come up under Fedex - don't give up yet!
It shipped to a ship
-
Thanks smooth j. I have almost the exact same config as you. Ordered 4/23, Estimated ship date 5/9 (although I'm not holding my breath...).
Was there a delay on any of the parts? -

Not looking good now :/
I also made a page to keep track of how long it took - and its still counting!

That was quick...

Man, that 2070 delivery date...better late than never I guess

LOL...I was on the phone with FedEx and when I went to update the package status - I finally saw movement
EDD from Fedex: 4/26/2011
Picked up from NJ, go figure
-
awesome! tell us how everything is.
i wonder when mine will ship out because i have that status: Finalizing production, delivery preparation, and ship complete. -
How did you find your order in their system before you got the tracking number? I tried using their track system and putting in my order number but it returned nothing.
-
hey, use this i found mine
https://www.fedex.com/AltRefTracking?cntry_code=us -
Found my service tag already so now I am taking a look at the specs for the MB and etc.
I see that I have 1x2GB stick and 1x4GB stick. I am still looking for the MB so I can see if it indeed has 4x Ram slots. -
how did you find that?
-
Check your packing slip - its under your order:
https://www.dell.com/support/orderstatus/us/en/17/PackingSlip
Keep in mind you will need to get every part right in order to view it. -
thank you very much, and is how i found my tracking # the same way you found yours?
-
Yes, and I called to verify.
-
okay, i'm just going to take it that it is the real deal. mine has an Estimated delivery date of Apr 27, 2011. hopefully it gets here that day.
and have Fedex picked up your package because mine just says this: Apr 25, 2011 12:48 AM Shipment information sent to FedEx. When was your information sent to Fedex? -
I have just gotten back from spring break so have not posted in a while. I am seeing that lots of the people whose progress I have been watching along with mine are starting to finally recieve their systems. My status is still unchanged for my 1 March order, and my new EDD is 25 May. I have spoken to my "Executive Customer Support Team" rep several times who is now using the story that my delay is due to waiting for memory; up until 2 weeks ago it was due to the graphics card being delayed, but he says they now have that. With all the systems that I am reading about starting to go out the door, I don't see how I can still be waiting on memory for a system that I ordered going on 9 weeks ago now. My specs:
i7 2820QM
16gig ram
backlit keyboard
1920 X 1080 3D
GT 555M 3 gb graphics card (no tv tuner)
2 * 640gig 7200rpm hard drives
I have been alternatively told that my delay was due to the processors, the ram, the graphics card and the hard drives, yet I see systems going out now with each of these ordered a month after mine was. Any suggestions on alternatives? I really want this computer after looking at other alternate options; if the plan is for them to either keep delaying my order until I cancel, or cancel it ultimately themselves if I do not, I guess I will have to look into what my legal options are at that point. Please don't get me wrong and think that I am a whiner, but this will one day be my 8th Dell computer; it may well be my last. -
Word of advice, and sorry to say, but cancel the order and go with less memory. You can can always buy it later and it most likely will be cheaper.
I have a feeling thats whats holding you up above all. -

Please educate me on ram, as I still don't understand computer guts completely. My understanding was that the 3D versions with 8 gig of ram or more come with 4 dimm slots, and that for 8 gig of ram you get 2 "chunks" of 4 gig ram, one in each of 2 slots. So I assumed for 16 gig of ram, you would get 4 "chunks" of 4 gig ram, one in each of 4 slots. So why does ordering 16 gig of ram make it more difficult to produce? If there is enough ram "chunks" around to satisfy all of these orders, why can't I just get 4 of them?
-
Mine is in California, heading up the coast (overnight) tomorrow. And of course, I won't be home. Oh well, at least it's on its way.
I ordered mine on April 1st, FYI. -
To be honest, I am not sure and I agree with you. There is a rumor that Dell has issues with 16GB of memory even though others have reported it works just fine.
I am just saying, since you are not getting anywhere you can do one of two things:
1) Cancel one order and open up another one
2) Keep this one open and open a new order if the funds permit. This way if one ships, you can cancel the other and you won't loose your place in line in the process. -
Squeeker the Cat Notebook Consultant
i agree...........besides you really dont need 16gb of ram in a laptop..........8 will do just fine.....and youll likely have no issues with 8gb -
I don't know why people BLINDLY give advice like this? How do you know he doesn't really need 16GB of memory? Do you know his use cases? Believer it or not some people do...
I need 16GB but am unwilling to spend almost 2x what i already spent because i'm not a gamer and i'm unwilling to get a high end video card (that i don't need) in combination with no optimus on top of it all... -
For some reason mine does not have a service tag number on the packing slip
-
I dunno - guess you just have to wait till you actually get the system. I wouldn't worry though
-
I don't mean to turn this into an arguement about laptop capabilities, because I am no computer guru. I do sports and aviation photography and will typically shoot 2000-3000 shots per day with pro cameras putting out 22meg files, as well as shooting video and incorporating the photos into the videos. Therefore I use Photoshop CS5 and Premiere Pro at the same time. With my current Inspiron with 6 (I believe) gig of ram I constantly get warnings about running out of memory. So I figured I would go with the most processing power and capacity I can get to alleviate that problem. As I have said before, I am also not a computer guru, so I would rather have the maker put in the memory rather than me screwing something up. And from what I have seen on these forums, it sounds like if you install your own extra ram then it gives Dell the right to say you have violated your warranty; given that this is Dell we are dealing with, I do not want to give them a single piece of ammo to use against me when something craps out.
So getting back to technical questions rather than questions about why I ordered what I did, am I misunderstanding how the 16gig is implemented? Is it just 4 sets of 4 gig ram put intop the 4 slots or is there something different specific to 16 gig? If not, then no offense to anybody currently getting theirs, but since I have been waiting going on 9 weeks now and am supposedly expedited, why am I not getting some of the memory that is being shipped out now?
Of course, I do not necessarily buy the excuse that they are waiting for the memory anyway, as several of the reps have contradicted themselves about which component is causing the problem... -
Well something came today!
Luckily my wife was home to pick it up when then bell rang.Attached Files:

Smooth_J, that is very cool. I ordered on the 4th of April and EDD of 27th. Still says ship complete since Friday. No track # or anything. Hope I get soon, basically the same as your machine.
I think Dell is just messing with my head sometimes. -
How is it smooth j?? Give us some first impressions....

Ordered my non-3D 1080P XPS 17 on the 4/20 shipped on 4/26. I will be receiving it tomorrow.
My current 3D XPS 17 took 18 days from order to ship. -
HOLY COW it shipped in 6 days! What was your configuration if I may ask?

Happy for you, but absolutely furious with Dell because this is totally unacceptable. Am I right in believing the build times for all XPS configurations should be the same if there are no part delays? Meaning if none of the components are on backorder (my order was basically the same as yours but 8gb of ram) then it should be built in equal time. I ordered it weeks before you.
How the hell is this possible? -
I ordered through a premier enterprise account if that make any difference. But I would definitely call order support and customer service and make sure there are no delays.
-
I dunno - I will let everyone know when I arrive home in a few hours
-
How can you stay at work after waiting so long to get yours???
I just got a call from the rep I have been working with. He has been ignoring me since last Weds, so I initiated a policy of forwarding him my last set of questions everyday, and never got a response. He just called and said my system has moved out of production, is built, and will be shipped "in a day or two" with overnight delivery. He would not tell me where it is coming from, but he did say it is from outside the US. He also indicated that the online status will not change, so ignore it. I am cautiously optimistic, but also half expecting to hear a ticking sound when I open the box... -
Update: My order was delay until 5/2 original date was 4/22.
I got email that my order was shipped yesterday. I got a call from Dell support yesterday and today both went to my voice mail. Due to I have block 800 # calls.
I got my system in the morning Fedex overnight.
)
All is good about the system except I forgot to select backlit KB. I might give a Dell support a call to see if they can help me with backlit KB. -
Mine still hasn't moved out of "Finalizing Production". It's been that way since Friday afternoon. My rep called earlier and said it had gone into quality testing on Friday afternoon, and that process takes "3 business days at the longest", which means it should have been done today.
So much for having my order expedited. Sounds like they're just sitting on it. -
Well, I finally got it - and here is a short video
YouTube - XPS 17 Box Opening
All and all, I am pretty happy with this laptop. I made a few mistakes in the video though. IMHO, the top and the palm rest seem to be made of a metal of some sort. Not sure if its aluminum, but its something like it.
The keyboard is interesting to type on. The keys are nice, kind of reminds me of the MBP. However the space bar is kind of hard, like a older style KB. Guess since the KB takes the most abuse, so its probably better that way.
The mouse pad is decently responsive. It has two finger scrolling and etc which I kind of miss when I gave my older MBP a few weeks back to my one of my family members.
The fan is not bad. It is loud when at full blast (prime95, picture at the bottom), but if you have a pair of headphones or maybe watching a movie, you shouldn't be able to hear it that much, if any.
The sound I find to be pretty darn nice coming from a laptop. I'm no audio expert, but it sounds more than decent enough for pretty much anything
The LCD is nice, and more than enough area. However I have a slight issue... it seems the LCD is a bit washed out. Maybe it could be me, or my lighting (CFL 500K daylight), but I don't see why a color profile or some adjusting won't fix it. The LCD model for me is LGD02C5 - I think thats the same one they used in the M17XR3 as well.
The design is nice, easy on the eyes and is pretty solid. However we have one slight exception, the LCD lid. Its solid, don't get me wrong, but its feel a bit if'y especially when you grab both sides at the top (while open) and try to push one side and pull the other. I know people will say, well its a 17 - and yes I know - but it feels a bit too easy in my opinion.
Any questions - let me know!

OMG!!!! After 61 days or nearly 9 weeks of being "In Production", my laptop order just went to "Finalizing Production" minutes ago.

Congrats! Here's to hoping you don't get stuck there for 5+ days like me!
61 days is ridiculous. I've been waiting for mine for just under a month (plus three weeks waiting for a prior, aborted HP order) and it's been killer for me. This has been the most miserable ordering experience I've ever had on a large purchase. The horrendously inconsistent communication and complete unwillingness to do anything to compensate for problems has been far worse than the wait itself. -
My order status just updated to "Shipped"! Still no tracking number, and I can't find it by reference number on the FedEx site, but that's still pretty encouraging. I'm not holding out hope it will come tomorrow, but hopefully Thursday.
