Just got approved for an SXPS 16 system replacement! (thanks a ton to the help of this forum)... 4 days after a service tech replaced my motherboard (only my 2nd onsite mb swap) and the nvidia GPU on it was clearly DOA... major screen flickering 10x worse then the previous mb.
I should have called 6 months ago for overheating issues instead of waiting for flickering lines and portions of the screen shading/flickering. Was 1 month out of warranty when I called 10 days ago, and encouraged by the XPS support rep to aim for a system replacement as I didnt want to ship my 1530 under the nvidia limited warranty extension just for another bad motherboard, so I paid for 1 year warranty extension on that first call and the rep filed it as resolved, and then I called back 3 days later when warranty was active.
Motherboard was replaced onsite the next day and temps showed the same overheating problems so even if no other problems I planned on calling them back within a month for a 3rd mb replacement.
Then I walk by my desk one afternoon and saw major random screen flickering. My m1530 was just sitting idle, no overheating, nothing, yet it was so bad that I had time to grab my phone and take 10 minutes of video. Posted a few clips on youtube as proof if needed, given that I'm going to demand a system replacement 1 week after extending my warranty and a few days after mb replaced.
Spent a lot of time on hold because I kept saying no I want to talk to a supervisor as the rep pretty much begged me to settle for one more bad motherboard and call back next time for a system replacement. Told him given the time and money that my bad m1530 has cost me already, days off work for onsite service calls (now they want 2 days in the same week!), in no way was I going to settle for anything less then a system replacement now, and if that is denied then I'm demanding that they refund me the 350 bucks for extending my warranty which shouldnt have been needed yet I was forced given the sad state of the nvidia limited warranty extension... and I put that $350 towards an HP while I pursue my m1530 problem with unresolved issues.
The rep called back an hour later and said I'm approved for an SXPS 16 system replacement (now comes that battle... might need this great forum more then ever!) I must note that they never asked me for the weblinks to my youtube clips as proof, and never had me re-run diagnostics etc. It was time consuming but not difficult to prove my case as they're obviously well aware of the issue at hand, nvidia causing certain death of our m1530's. Also on the call back the rep thanked me for being understanding and nice through the torturous process, so it sounds like Dell requires them to make it tough on us, especially with the amount of system replacements, but the customer can still win!

Let me know opinions. Main thing I cannot settle for is the 6 cell battery. dont have time at work to post my 1530 specs but I was hoping for 6GB ram and i7 processor. Those were hopes. 9 cell is a need and the 56 whr 6 cell is a downgrade. Will call them tonight... is it better or even an option to try for the 9 cell as a 2nd battery?

They should be able to exchange your battery with a 9 cell if that came with your original, but asking for another battery to keep is kind of low.
Looks like they are building you a brand new system. You got lucky.I think they either offer a refurbished with higher spec or a brand new system with near identical spec.

And it looked new to me compared to other's posts but I wasnt sure, thanks for the insight. -

Hi,
I have been reading this post for awhile since my XPS M1530 was get pretty hot from time to time.
For those of you who are still struggle with your overheating XPS1530, keep at if you are not happy with the motherboard replacements.
I am happy to get a system replacement finally after three motherboard replacements, so this seems similar to some in the post. However, I am not sure on the specs for the replacement and would like some advice on the replacement. For example;
1. Eventhough I am getting a larger hard drive, I think the replacement Hard Drive is 5400RPM while my current one is 7200RPM, so am I getting a lesser performing hard drive?
2. I am not sure what graphic card I am getting from the list below. It does list Module,Assembly,Base,Notebook,M96,1647.
3. Should I request for the 130W AC Adaptor since I have read the 90W may have throttling issues?

You guys are such a bad influence....
I called about a continuing problem where they've been out to fix it a few times - my screen puts out 179 nits vs. 280 on my wife's e6500, and they are authorizing a replacment, they're working on a xps15, don't know a damn thing about them, but I have 40 days left on my original 3 year in home warranty - W H E W !!
BTW - any special requests when configuring the new system - not sure what the latest is on these systems as I was so happy with my m1530 that i wasn't planning on upgrading for a long time... -
crudo20 - I just had my m1530 (hot hot hot! - 2 mobo/heat sink replacements. 5 or so AC adapter replacements, batteries won't charge, etc) replaced by dell with an XPS 15...
I wasn't allowed to special request ANYTHING. I was continually told by Dell "not to worry" that everything would be like or better on the new machine. This was absolutely not true, so make sure you get an order number and if any specs on the new machine are not to your liking (not "like or better") do not hesitate to ask for something else that would make up the difference for you. the DO have the power to make it happen, but usually you have to escalate the issue and talk to supervisors, etc.
Also, they were refusing to send me an AC adapter for my m1530, even though that meant I couldn't backup my computer AND it was to take nearly 3 weeks for the new one to arrive - I told them THAT was also unacceptable, and they sent me an AC adapter before the system replacement.
the differences of the m1530 and the XPS 15:
the good:
larger hard drive (same RPM, 7200)
better processor
better (but not MORE) RAM
1080p screen
USB 3.0, eSATA
facial recognition (in theory this is "good")
Windows 7
the bad:
loss of ports - no S-video, no firewire
loss of express card slot
loss of remote control
loss of fingerprint reader
windows 7
the ugly:
BD-RE drive not available on XPS 15, only BD-ROM with CD/DVD +/-RW.
So, the "good" is stuff I personally don't really care about... my m1530 was doing just fine for me without those upgrades - I can easily get 1TB drives for cheap, I don't use a ton of memory, don't own any USB 3.0 or eSATA devices, and the FastAccess facial recognition just plain SUCKS - it kept putting my screen to sleep during movies!
The "bad" stuff - it depends on whether you use these things. I really liked my remote that tucked into my express card slot, I had JUST bought something that connected via firewire, and I used the fingerprint reader all the time... but I suppose I can live without all these things.
The UGLY... this was a major point of contention. I wouldn't let it go, because by dell's own math on the XPS 14 and XPS 15 configuration sites, there's a $350 difference in price between the drive I had and the drive they were giving me.
I expressed this concern from the moment they told me I was getting a system replacement (which I didn't particularly want) - I was told a BD-RE just wasn't happening and I should be happy I was getting a new computer. I asked if I could get an XPS 14, which DOES have the BD-RE drive, they said that was not a possibility, the XPS15 is the only thing they're allowed to give me as a replacement for the XPS m1530.
They tried to shut me up by giving me a $100 RAM upgrade - I told them this was unacceptable, besides the cost being nowhere near comparable, the reason I'd chosen Dell over HP/Gateway/ThinkPad/etc. was the fact that I would have the ability to burn blu-rays on my computer. I asked for a refund.
All of a sudden, a supervisor was calling me and I was offered (in writing) the memory upgrade OR a hard drive upgrade, PLUS the BD-RE drive as soon as it becomes available for the XPS 15, which I'm told is going to be soon. (and really, the written promise of a BD-RE would have sufficed, that's ALL I wanted.)
Additionally, they shipped my XPS15 without the mouse and speaker software/drivers properly installed - I had to reinstall it from the dell website. I also had to pester them about the roxio creator software that was supposed to be on my machine - they tried to convince me that roxio 1.0 (which comes with ALL dells, I think?) was the same as roxio media creator 10.3... um... no.
anyway... my system replacement wasn't an easy thing. hopefully yours goes more smoothly. -
OK - thanks for the heads-up, I'll try the nice dumb guy approach, that usually works ok-ish.... I never did get the fingerprint reader to work well (I have dry skin!) for me and firewire / bd-re are handled on my desktop...
-
So Dell is replacing my screen due to a bad wifi cable, I guess it runs down th side of the screen. Anyways currently I have this:
1 320-8335 Premium FHD WLED Display, Obsidian Black, 2.0 MP Webcam
The part number for the replacement is: 0fd97, I cannot find any information, isthis the same screen? -
After a third motherboard replacement I am again having heatproblems with my M1530 (as expected). I have totally had 8 overheting mobo's and have had one system replacement 2 years ago.
Now im in contact with them again and opting for getting replaced with another system.
Is it just me or is it quite obvious that the tech ppl never read the actual emails at first? Ive stated that i had overheatingproblems and included temperature-readings of (ACPI 100C, CPU 93C, GPU 94C) that I've measurd with HW-monitor.
What is the first thing the tech guy replies in his mail? "Please go to "www..." and download the program HW-monitor and measure your temperatures and email them back to me. Gaah!
Trying to bypass that guy and opting for a supervisor directly, but I'll guess I will have to do the Dell-dance a while longer (gotten pretty good at the steps)
I will keep you posted on the progress -
You have the Mobo replacements on your side towards getting you a new lappy.
I think some of the Tech's "read or see what they want".
Are you contacting via chat or phone? If your going thru phone, in the past the minute I got a Rep on the phone, I have asked to speak with a Supervisor immediately..that way I don't have to go thru the agony of repeating my situation once again to the Support Rep.
Good luck to you on getting some resolve today. Remember, if they are unwilling to work with you..there is always the Unresolved Issues form you can fill out.
And, have you seen this thread? NVIDIA Settlement- Defective GPUs
Cin... -
Yeah saw the Settlement but as the time limit has passed and since I have more than 1 year left on my warranty, i thought to only opt for a replacement. Always good to refer to their admission of faulty parts if they try to place guilt on other computer parts though
I've contacted them through mail (sweden does not have the chat option for XPS), mostly because I dont think i can mantain the emotional aggrevation level that I would need if they try to offer me another mobo-replacement. I rather prefer to take it a bit slower and be sure that I can stand up for my cause and back it up with relevant tech-info and passages out of swedish law supporting my request.
UPDATE: Got a new response from the same techie offering me to send the computer away for 2 weeks for the to repair it, Yes replacing a mobo and heatsink at another location for 14 days instead of doing it the next day at my home is a much better solution. Asked again for a sup. to get in contact so we'll see -
Just got a 3rd email and now the tech had talked to her supervisor and I've been granted a new system =)
A sales rep or something is going to contact me regarding the building-specs now
Do you know how the warranty-works? I have little over 1 year left on my extended warranty with this computer, is that getting transfered? Considering the history of faulty parts im kinda interested in prolonging the warranty -
Your warranty will be transferred over to your new system! I would assume you will be getting a XPS 15.
What you can do is try and get them to add on more warranty coverage to your new system due to the prob's w/your 1530. When you get your spec's look it over to see if they added warranty coverage.
Cin... -
I am going to work hard for the Screen as i currently have 900x1440 and their are obliged to provide equal or better performance -
Yes, when you receive your specs..be sure to look at them closely compared to what you currently have. Like you said, they are supposed to provide equal or better system on the replacement.
I had to have them send me a 6 cell Battery separate, as they didn't include it when shipped (On my 1530 I had purchased the 6 & 9 cell together). I even made them send me a new travel remote for the 1647 (they left that out).
Cin... -
Haha =)
Yeah probably going to get a phonecall regarding the replacement so am going to make sure they mail the specs before ordering it. Might upgrade a few things while im at it.
This is perhaps going away from topic a bit but how big a difference is the i5 compared to the 4core i7?
Might upgrade to the 2,66ghz double core but paying an extra 250$ for i7 feels a bit like overkill since the CPU probably isnt the bottleneck for playing games with the X15? -
Well, the i5 for desktops is 4 cores without the hyperthreading. The core i7 has 4 cores but with hyperthreading so it looks like 8 cores. Both have TurboBoost though. : )
And, for laptops the i5 has 2 cores without hyperthreading, but with the TurboBoost which the Core i3 does not have. The Core i7 mobile has 2 or 4 cores depending on the model and hyperthreading and turboboost.

Hey, don't know if you guys remember me but here's a long overdue update on my story:
I am an original M1530 owner, bought it in August 2008. Got it replaced by another M1530 (brand new, not refurbished) in early 2009 due to a hard drive failure, assumed due to the overheating also on that laptop. That replacement is the one I've been using since (and thus, currently). Got the 8600m GT, fan, heatsink replaced around April of 2010.
And now here we are. Overheating problems starting to appear again - 90 degrees Celsius for GPU at least, and mid-high 80's for chipset. Last April's replacement was due to 100+ degrees Celsius GPU.
Called Dell today, and I will be getting a technician to come replace the same parts again. However, I asked about system replacements and they said if it happens again (I know it will eventually), call and we can talk about replacements, or "system exchanges" (refurbished).
It'll either be another M1530 or a Studio XPS 1640, but if it comes to it, I will be bargaining for an actual XPS, not a Studio XPS. (I also remember that time when people got Alienware replacements, around March of 2010.) It's going to be a pain to transfer all my stuff over to the new laptop after two years, but if it means these overheating and performance issues (random drops to 5-10 FPS in games) go away, I'll gladly do it.
Anyone else have recent experience with system replacements for the M1530 (besides lindstroem, congrats btw)?
I will keep you updated if and when things change. -
Sorry to hear of further issues your having : (
Keep everything document going forward with convos/chats you are having with Tech Support.

I got my first system jan 2008, got it replaced with a brand new system jan 2009 and after three replacements now getting another system in jan 2011
I think they are quite aware of the fact that all mobo's more or less will break down when under gaming pressure but think that they try to replace them in the hope of not having to replace the entire system.
I doubt that you will be getting another M1530 as replacement (and is imo rlly nothing that you should opt for). In the last mail from Dell tech they said that they did not have anymore M1530's to use as replacements so you will hopefully get another system.
It seemed like im not going to get a refurbished computer as they were going to contact me regarding the system build and wether i wanted to upgrade some parts.
So hang in there and I think that you will certaintly get a replacement next time the heats starts uppin' again. For more references about ppl getting replacements, scroll back in this forum about 4-5 pages and you will find a bunch of ppl as well -
-
Sorry to tell you, but I had GPU problems (among other things) with my new XPS 15. They took it for repair we'll see how it goes.
-
Can always hope that it's because of a poor heatsink and bad paste-application. Heard some ppl in the forums having high temps as well and they have been able to sort it out by reapplying thermal paste of better quality.
keebz: Thanks mateI will update the thread with the results from the negotiation with Dell when they contact me

I havent heard anything from Dell since last thursday when I got my Swap-request confirmed and forwarded to the correct department.
Ive contacted the Dell representative but she said that it could take some time.
Is a week a long time? Last time they contacted me the day after. Should I just wait or send a mail regarding an unfinished support errand? -
When they were replacing my 1530, I didn't receive the specs for well over a week. I would assume you would be getting further info fairly soon, since it's been about a week now.
You can always send an e-mail to request status. I was calling & on Chat I believe at the 7 day mark asking for status update.
Have you checked your account online to see any movement? Go to your account > My Support > Service Call Status > Under Support History & Status > You can check out either, History of Support Requests & Service Call Status > Put in Your lappy's Service Tag > Hit Submit for any/all results. -
I just got a mail suggesting a replacement with following (important) components:
Intel i3-370M (2,4ghz)
Display (1366X768)
The Nvidia 420M graphics card.
I replied opting for a i5 instead of the i3.
Regarding the screen i said that i had a 1440*900 screen today and that I would not lower my res and there for requested the FHD screen.
Hoping for the best on this matters.
Also asked about cost for upgrading HD & Graphics card. Also opted for the backlit keyboard.
I asked about waiting until the SB-processors came out but I hold little hope on that matter.
Crossing my fingers....
What do you guys think? -
^^You may have a chance. Let us know if they agreed to spec it with a i5. You shouldn't have to go with a lower, res. they are supposed to give you equal to/better.
-
Hate the fact thats its weekend. Wanna come to an agreement as soon as possible, now i have to wait and hope for two whole days
-
^^The weekend will go by super fast!
Hoping Monday you will hear something back.
And, they give you that cost on the HD & Graphics card upgrade..Wouldn't be nice if they just said "free" -
But dont mind spending some money on getting the computer upgraded, going to try to extend my next day warranty as well (1 year left atm) -
^^*fingers crossed for yah* : )
The warranty surely does come in handy ~ I've had to use both.
Don't forget to check your account @Dell every so often to see if they added any updates there! -

Hope that doesnt mean that they have sent the unit for production?? That was about 1h40min after I returned their mail and informed that that their suggestion was not acceptable.. :S -
Hey, it's me again
I'm glad you are getting a replacement and it sounds like a non-M1530/1640? It sounds like perhaps the unit might be in production based on that translation, especially considering the short length of time between your follow-up email and the Dell Support update.
There is no way for you to call them?
Is it just me or do those specs indicate an XPS 14 instead of an XPS 15?
But yeah man, congrats on your eventual replacement, you shall be very happy once you have the kinks worked out. -
It was a X15, Ive mailed them regarding wether they have sent it to production or not so we'll see what response i get -

hey,
so i have a xps m1530 with some heat problems and i already had my motherboard replaced. i contacted them again and im getting the motherboard replaced. i kinda had doubts about that solving the issue so i asked them via chat if i could get a system replacement. they told me something like
"The system it self has passed the eligibility for this type of resolution, it has passed the time frame given for this type of resolution, there is nothing else that can be done for the machine to be eligible."
im just curious on what allowed you guys to get ur systems replaced. i guess ill just have to wait for a technician to replace the motherboard and see if it gets resolved.
ps i only have like 3 weeks left in my warranty so i wanna get the heat thing fixed asap -

You are eligible for it since there were 3 unsuccesful repairs of the same problem and problem still persists."
So they have a rule stating that they have 3 repairs to try to fix the problem before a replacement can be issued, but Im sure that the supervisor have the mandate to approve a earlier system replacement.
So my advice to you is to call/mail/chat with the Dell support, explain your case and the long history of Dell XPSM1530 to break down because of heating problems, and ask to talk to a supervisor (because the ordinary techies arent allowed to grant replacements).
Good luck! -
Hello, I am new here. I have a M1530 and it gets about 70 idle and 80-90 in games. Can this be a legitimate reason of warranty repair request?
-
Often you need to have direct affects on the performance to be able to get a replacement, but depending on what temp-results you get, its quite easy to argue for a repair. The M1530's heatsink connects the CPU and the GPU which often cause the CPU to heat up because the heatsink is not able to handle the heat generated from the GPU, so that itself is a cause for repair as the processor doesnt thrive in +90C ^^ -

The chat are only avaliable in some countries. Not in my country for example.

Got a new response regarding my replacement now:
1. Processor – is adequate replacement for your older one C2D T8300. Core i5 only for additional fee.
2. LCD has smaller resolution (it isn’t so visible). There is extra WLED backlight instead of CCFL. Luminous intensity is better on this new LCD. Full HD only for fee.
3. It’s not possible to have backlit keyboard. Only US layout, only in USA.
4. It’s not possible to configure processor i5 with GeForce GT435M, only i7.
5. No, it’s not possible to wait till new model (graphics card, processor) will be revealed.
6.
Premium NBD Support – XPS
– 1 Year Contract for the price 1699 SEK includes VAT
– 2 Years Contract for the price 2099 SEK includes VAT
I responded that I accepted that they wouldnt upgrade the CPU but wanted to know how much it would cost to upgrade it. And I refuse to accept the lower res screen with their argument "it isnt that big a difference" and said that if she wouldnt accept that, I wanted to speak to her supervisor.
uncertain wether I should accept the +2 year warranty. I currently have 1 year left..
I'll keep you updated -

i find it kinda hard to access chat too (im from usa btw). what i do usually is:
access chat
get the unavailable technicians message or something like that
click on email for support
then in the email for support window, they have this link that says something like "technicians are available to talk to you, click here to talk now", and when i click there, chat works. you might have to repeat 2-3 times. also, they have times of availablility like 9am-11pm on weekdays and 11am-8pm on weekends or something like that.
also got my processor replaced since the technician said he didnt think the motherboard needed to be replaced. ran a quick test and saw that temps hit around 87C for the CPU and 86C for GPU. is that too hot? especially considering my room is like 62Fahrenheit or 16Celsius -
Update regarding SWAP-process.
I got a response from Dell support now. Kinda weird because earlier they denied my request to upgrade the processor from i3 to i5 by showing performance evaluations of the i3 to my previous processor. They also denied me the FHD screen with the comment "its not that much lower resolution to get 720p from 1440*900". I responded that I didnt care for their interpretation of "not that much lower" and that I was entitled to equal or better performance of each separate component in the computer.
They now responded with an updated build spec:
Processor
Previous suggestion: Intel® Core™ i3-370M (2.4Ghz, 4Threads, 3M cache)
New suggestion: Intel® Core™ i5-560M (2.66 GHz,3M)
LCD (This was the component I was fighting for)
Previous: 15.6 High Definition WLED TL (1366x768) 720p
New: 15.6 Full HD B+RGLED TL (1920x1080) 1080p
Hard drive
Previous: 320 GB seriell ATA-hårddisk (7 200 v/min)
New: 500 GB seriell ATA-hårddisk (7 200 v/min)
I responded asking wether my assumtion that no additional fee was involved (since Ive had asked how much a processor and hard drive upgrade would cost), and they simply responded that they were happy that we had found a suitable solution and that the production ought to take 2-4 weeks.
So im am quite happy right now. Usually takes a bit of back and fourth juggling with Dell support, but in my experience they usually come through quite well. -
^^Very nice. Glad you got better specs for yourself.
And, the process will take about that long for the build. Just keep checking your account for updates. I still called about once a week to see how things were going.
