As i mentioned few pages before, today i have my screen changed. I had a WSXGA+ screen from Samsung and now i unfortunately have the same. But there is a difference. New screen is much brighter and less grainy than the old one. Do you think that i should try to change the screen again?? Now i'm satisfied with this screen, as i said this one is much better than the old one, but it's still Samsung...and the grainness didn't dissapear totally - there are still grainy corners on the bottom of screen and little grainy areas on sides - but it's only visible on white background. So what should i do?? Thanks for help.

PS: do you think, that if i ask for specify part number (e.g. XK***), i will have better chance to receive it?? I don't want to spend hours on the phone with tech support, only mention it in email.

If you are satisfied with your new screen, then I don't see any reason to spend even MORE time trying to get an LG screen. Short of ordering the exact part number off of eBay, there's no guarantee you will get the screen you want (I ordered my LG, WSXGA+ screen off eBay, but that's because I originally ordered the system with a WXGA screen and Dell wouldn't upgrade it for me).

Trust me: your system is fine and perfectly usable. Quit worrying about the the manufacturer of the screen and just go enjoy it.

Ok, i don't want to change screen again, not only because of getting another (and maybe worse) Samsung display, but what is really worse, i have to stay at home for a day when tech arrives. Or i need to left my laptop at home but i need it for work, so this is not an option.

You said that you bought your screen on ebay - is it good way for upgrade?? Or to buy it somewhere on internet?? I saw some e-shop that sells laptop displays and accessories for Dell notebooks too, but i didn't saw any known product numbers or whatever that coresponds to Dells screens.

Dell is apparently taking a hard line on these screens and won't send out specific part numbers. Tech support told me to return the system if I wasn't happy with it. I guess they would rather sell it in the Outlet than to spend any time replacing screens. I think the first initial batches of the Samsung screens were defective and had some manufacturing problems. The WSXGA+ screen I received last week was also very bright, at least when looking directly at the center. Samsung may have corrected some of the defects with the new batch from late March. Even so, the LG screen sounds like it offers better viewing angles and brighter whites.

I went to Best Buy this weekend and checked many of the hardware IDs for other laptops. Toshiba laptops appear to use only Samsung screens, although they only use the WXGA resolution. In some respects, I think the M1530 Samsung screen was actually a bit better than some of the screens I saw there. The best screen without question was the LED on the Macbook Air.

The advantage of ordering it on eBay is that you know for SURE what you're getting - You don't have to hope and pray that you get an LG -- you'll definitely get it. Disadvantage is price and the fact that you have to install if yourself (which isn't that bad). Here's the auction where I got the screen for my Inspiron 1520 -- there are still 4 left from this seller: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=160224045004&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=006

The part number I received from that seller was LP154WE2(TL)(B2). The same seller has an auction for that exact part number, but for some reason is charging an additional $30:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/A-NEW-LP154WE2-...ryZ31569QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

If you want to buy it, I would use the first auction that I linked to -- I e-mailed the seller and he said that all screens they have for the 1520 were manufactured by LG.

Also see the thread I started about upgrading the screen of a 1520: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235623

    Hope this helps!

Hopefully it'll be the LG and nothing else is wrong with the system like keyboard or missing XPS letter lol. If I do get another Samsung I'm going to return it and order LED screen as well as having more EPP discount applied the rep only gave me 20% discount instead of 26%.

Thanks for links, but there is a problem, seller can't send screen to my country :( but i'll check something similar on ebay and maybe i found something :)
But as i see it, i will not change the screen when i have a warranty - yesterday i saw it when tech was changing it and it a job for surgeon. So i don't want to loose my warranty when i accidently broke something during the change. I'm not definitely incapable in technical thing, but this is too much for me, because i saw it only one time.
Anyway, i checked your thread, and if you really want to change your screen, please take some pictures/videos of changing - it will be great for everyone who want to do something similar.

You can view/download the service manual giving you step by step instructions and photos.

    It is not difficult.

on powering my notebook the very first time, the screen didnt work, called up dell blamed it on the grainy screen issue and they are sending out a replacement with an upgraded screen to 1920 x 1200.... what a result!

If you're going to go ahead with replacing your LCD panel at your own expense then why not order the panel from Dell Parts? Last time I checked they had plenty of XK309 in stock and the cost shipped was around $300 with a 90 days warranty.

I installed my new LG screen about a week and a half ago.... I should have taken pictures but I didn't even think about it. As I said in my other thread, as long as you follow the Service Manual and take your time, you shouldn't have any problems.

question. How is it actually with the grainy screens? If I have a samsung in my ntbk that is just being shipped, is it 100% sure that it is going to be grainy? are all LGs good and all Samsungs bad? Is it that only some people with samsung see the difference and do smth about it and all Samsungs are faulty? Or is it that only some people GET ntb with faulty screen? thanks a lot

Not all Samsungs are bad, in fact many have reported being very happy with their Samsung LCD.

When you get you laptop look at the screen. If you don't notice anything wrong then there's nothing more to it...

thats in fact what I was asking about. If people who reported it are just satisfied coz they cant tell the difference between grainy and not or because they actually got a good screen :)

I was happy with my samsung up until today. My replacement unit arrived with LG screen about an hour ago and after looking at both screens side by side I can honestly say that the difference is significant in color.

The Samsung is WASHED OUT. As for viewing angles they're both about the same to me, but the LG really is more vibrant and crisp. The pictures posted on here by rem rem on page 95 isn't exagerrated at all that's how both of them look side by side, Samsung is just washed out in color and not as bright as LG.

Now if I didn't get to see a side by side comparison in person I would have been happy with my Samsucks. As a matter of fact I got the replacement unit due to keyboard issue and missing XPS letter not because of the screen. I just got lucky that it came with LG. Good luck to those still trying to get LG, it'll be worth it. On a side note Dell seriously needs to fix this issue shipping out laptop with faulty screen isn't acceptable.

So how about the graininess? I've seen other brand laptops with zero-grain screen but I don't have chance to compare and see M1530 Samsung side by side with M1530 LGP. Even the low-end Acer laptop with AUO screen is better than my M1530 Samsung :(

My 2 first M1530s had the Samsung RW985 for LCD. I took one to the Dell kiosk and compared it to the floor demo equiped with a LG xk309. The major differences was with viewing angles and brightness.

My 3rd M1530 showed yet another RW985 on the service tag but it arrived with a LG WD306. As soon as I booted the laptop I knew it was a better screen.

Having said that, it is quite possible that from one batch to another the quality of the Samsung screens is not equal. Some Samsung screen are really nice while others aren't.

That why i recommend looking at your screen and if you're happy with it then move on. Dealing with Dell to get a LG panel involves many, many hours of frustration that you will never get back for a benefit that might not even be worth it...

The grain wasn't that bad at all unless I look for it, like I said I was happy with the screen. The difference in color is what ticked me off. Keep in mind this is 1440x900 screen, I don't know about other resolution.

Hello, I have a 1525 Dell Inspiron and I also too have a grainy screen. I am past my 20 days of return policy and want to get this grainy screen fixed. It's driving me crazy. I have a personal dell representative from the Resolution team and am going to call him to send my laptop to get a replacement screen installed. One thing, how do I know which brand and model i have in my screen? It is a Glossy 1280 x 800 15.4" but have no idea how you tell the brand or model. Also when I send in my laptop, which screen do i tell him that I want? I still want the glossy but just one that isn't grainy. So I don't know which brand or model to ask for. I hear you all talking about LG but for my situation, could one of you recommend a screen that has high chances of not being grainy for my model? Thanks, All help appreciated.

    P.S. Fast answers appreciated..

received my XPS 1530 today with a Samsung 1680x1050 WSXGA+ screen and it is flawless: part number is listed on invoice as XR860 -- hopefully this means they have fixed the issue by moving to a newer version of the screen

One question - have you ever seen an LG WSXGA+ screen?
If not, you calling it 'flawless' doesn't mean much, you're not the first person to love their Samsung until they had something to compare it with.

From reading this thread, I guess I was one of the lucky ones that received a LG screen. I have the LPLDF00 1440-900 WXGA+ panel and NVIDIA GeForce 8400M card. From my experience, the LG is grainy too (not too much). The LG might be better the the Samsung - but its not all that great either. My basis for this is when I compared the LG to my older HP Laptop or my brother's Macbook Pro (same resolution).

It has the same sparkly grain feel others have mentioned. Maybe this is a result of the 'True Life' glossy screen - I sure miss those old matte screens. Overall this is a sweet Laptop, but I'm not 100% sold because of the screen.

This thread should be officially considered a moot point :) I've been sent two XPS M1530s with Samsung WSXGA+ screens (both sent back) and two XPS M1530s with LG WSXGA+ screens (one sent back).

The Samsung screens were grainy, but they didn't have any dead pixels (one had a stuck pixel). The LG screens both had a dead pixel, but they do look better (brighter, clearer, etc.).

My advice would be to pay attention to the quality of the build. If you get a good build with a Samsung screen free of pixel problems, you should keep it!

Hi guys. Just want to give you a little update on the situation here in Germany (and probably Europe) regarding the screen issue especially with the wxga+ screens. Remember when I posted that statement of that Markus Schuetz guy, the Dell Spokesperson?

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3093580&postcount=1126

Well, right now it looks like Dell is again shipping the m1530s in Germany with AUO screens on the wxga+ res. But this time Dell eventually has learned a lesson as some German forum users stated that there are new AUO screens shipped and that they are very far away from being grainy etc.
This has partially been stated by users who have experienced prior AUO screens and are now happy with their AUO panel. But again these are only news from Germany ;) Wish you all the best with your screens...

Device manager shows generic PnP Monitor. THe other code is from PC Wizard 2008. Of course it could be wrong, I dont know. According to Dell for my service tag it just shows the following (which youll note also shows the aforementioned xx726):
XX726 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., 15.4WXGA+, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC...., TLF, AU OPTRONICS CORP..., V2

Many days later ("Next Business Day" service, my ass), I did get a technician to come.

Since I had a good top half (LG screen) of one M1530 and a good bottom half (everything else) of another M1530, he performed some surgery by combining the good top half with the good bottom half into one great unit. Now if only we could do that with women! Har, har, har. :D

Everything seems to work well so far.

    YAYYYYYY!!!

If you've read my story, you'd know that I've been trying so hard to get an XK309.

Well I had the RW985 (Samsung) replaced once, then replaced a 2nd time today, because the original and replacement LCD were extremely grainy.

Both times I requested an XK309 but I was told it either wasn't in stock, or I just couldn't have it because I didn't have it fitted originally.

Well when the tech came out today and put another terrible RW985 in (in fact, the worst out of all of them...viewing angles less than 10 degrees, and horrible horizontal lines across the screen when viewing solid colours or shades), he rang Dell and requested that the screen be replaced with an "alternative".

The Dell person on the phone checked with their supervisor, and are FINALLY SENDING ME OUT AN XK309!!!!!!!!!

Of course the story hasn't ended yet (as I've not got the XK309 in my hands), but its great news.

It's interesting that Samsung's CEO has been charged with fraud, bribery and other and corporate improprieties. This has been in the news for a few months, but you have to wonder what kind of deal Samsung made with Dell to continue to sell these crappy substandard Samsung screens. For that alone, the CEO should be convicted and jailed.

I hate the fact that the Samsung screens are still used, but this is Dell's fault. They don't mind selling substandard screens as long as only a minority complains about them.
I'm sure if LG also had crappier screens, Dell would use them too.

yeah: also shows that what's listed on your invoice may not be what you get, which turns out to be a good thing in this instance.

Thank you for not being sarcastic nor condescending (or both) as was one of your earlier replies to my original post: as a newbie on the site its not encouraging when people jump all over your enthusiasm!

Have there been any reports of the 1920x1200 screen having graininess? How about the 1440x900 LED backlit one? That's basically the one deciding factor between me getting one or the other.

Well after 2 weeks of waiting for my replacement, my m1530 should be coming tommorow, and it says it has an AU Optronics in it! It has the part number of XX726. I've heard that the AU lcds are good, but does anyone on here have an XX726? Hows do you like it?

Now i just have to pray that it does arrive tommorow with an AU in it, and nothing else is wrong with the system!

edit: the first page of this thread says the AUO is grainy. Ive also searched the fourm a bit and theres somebad reviews, yet a page before this one, theres a good review. Can anyone vouch for the XX726 and ease my nerves?

I just took reciept of a Vostro 1500 yesterday with an AUO 1680x1050 glossy screen, and it looks absolutely beautiful. At first I was nervous when I saw I was getting an AUO, but when it came I was really surprised seeing as how many were complaining about the grainyness of the AUO and Samsung screens. It's bright, not a hint of grain, and the colors are really nice. My old Inspiron 700m also has an AUO screen (1280x800) and it too looks great. Maybe I just got lucky, but hopefully you get one just as nice too. :) Yay first post :D
