Tusin, That driver package that you gave me doesn't have the program. It's just the driver installer.

Can anyone tell me where to find the program for the fingerprint reader for XP?

Hi. I just got my xps1530 today and am very happy. I wanted to format the notebook and install XP on it and read this very informative guide before I bought the notebook. I followed the directions exactly and burned the bootable CD. However after I boot my computer from the CD I got the following message after a few minutes:

"setup could not read the cd you inserted,or the cd is not a valid windows cd."

Can somebody help me please? I want to start using my computer right away. Thanks in advance.

OK,so I have some new information. The XP setup says it doesn't recognize any previous versions of Windows and then doesn't read the cd as a full version of any xp (home or pro). I also tried to install it using Udi's explanation (Changing to ATA in BIOS). But even though I used the original XP cd I got the same errors. So I thought that maybe someting was wrong with the cd and tried to install it on another computer and it worked withouth problem! That makes me even more afraid that I won't be able to install XP on my XPS1530 at all :(. Somebody help please, I am really desperate here. Thanks..

Have you seen the guide on slipstreaming a copy of XP.

And I would still guess that your copy of XP might be messed up (yes even though it installed on a different computer).

I would try to get another copy of XP and try slipstreaming it. Sounds like your 1530 has issues with it.

    dell xp sp3 re-install disk ;)

    edit

also, not necessary to slipstream drivers and burn another disk, though you can do it that way.........

buy a cheap usb floppy drive and put the drivers on a disk, when prompted at start of install for other drivers(F6) point it to the usb floppy drive

or stick them on a usb flash drive.........

    Any help would be appreciated.

    I will get my M1530 on tuesday .... can't wait :)

I think I will install XP on it, as I think Vista simply hogs too many resources, and is slow to work with.... Anyway, will I still be able to boot the Media Direct thingy after installing XP?

have you already tried vista, or are you just going by what is said about it??

vista is fine as long as you have 2 gig memory and a decent processor.....

i mean, laptops were designed to run it, so why not, unless you have a specific reason to go back XP, or you just want to, lol ;)

Yea, I am using Vista on my current PC (which is a stationary one, with plenty of power - 3GB ram + Quad core 2,4 GHz) ... and to give an example of one simple task that annoys me: When I select maybe 20 files in a folder and presses delete it takes at least 10-15 seconds for the dialog to appear ... This may not seem as much, but when you do it often (and compare to the immediate response on XP) it becomes very anoying :) ... But yea, I have not fully made my mind yet, so if Media Direct won't work afterwards I do not want to make the switch, since I plan on using that.

    i'd try it for sure

you've def got some sort of problem w/ it taking that long. I just tried it several times w/ about 30 files and the prompt came up w/ in 1 second.....

w/ a quad and plenty of memory, there's a problem somewhere.....

So I decided to change from Vista Home Premium into Windows XP Professional x64 on my laptop Dell XPS m1530

    -Guide I use http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread...nstall+xp+m1530
-Windows Professional XP x64 came as an .iso file from Microsoft itself a couple of years ago when I downloaded it from my Engineering school along with a valid CD Key
-Used Nlite to package the drivers listed below into a new DVD of Windows XP Professional x64 (DVD because it was over 800Megs)
    -http://www.mediafire.com/?7hwmn4yfjw2
    -http://www.mediafire.com/?f52jzgdv1ln
    -http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R133015&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=176922
-I kept the RECOVERY partition from Vista and made a 26GB partition for the OS and 150GB+ for storage
-The setup runs through with no problems (including these steps in their entirety: collecting information, dynamic update, preparing installation, installing windows, finalizing installation)
-After it restarts, it goes into bluescreen for a split second and reboots immediately
-I went into Recovery Mode or something with the Windows XP x64 disc on bootup and saw that there were 2 drives with windows, "C:\Windows" and "D:\WINDOWS" is this normal if I kept that RECOVERY partition of the original Windows Vista Home Premium?
-All settings are pretty much default from Dell and everything else. I don't know where I went wrong.

I would prefer to go to Windows XP Professional x64 since Vista has too many router connectivities issues, but I am open to going back to Vista Home Premium if there is no other choice. Help please. I would be extremely grateful.

    Edit
I went and ran the Diagnostics after hitting F12
    Error Code 0148
    Msg: Error Code 2000-0148
    Msg: Hard/Optical Drive 0 - incorrect status: 1E Error register: 0068h
    Sense information: (06-2880).
    Sense data: 70h 00h 06h 00h 00h 00h 00h 0Ah 00h 00h 00h 00h 28h 00h 00h 00h 00h 00h
The given error code and message can be used by Dell Technical Support to help diagnose the problem.
Do you want to continue testing?

I think it might have to do with the SATA driver, according to the guide, I was supposed to select a specific one, but that was for the x32 version. The .exe file for the Serial ATA: Intel Matrix Storage Manager, Driver, Windows XP x64, English, Multi System, v.6.0.1.1002, A05 from Dell only had 2 options which had (Mobile) next to them, one was with RAID one was without. I selected the one without RAID. All of the other options had (Desktop) next to them. Did I make the wrong choice?

I've installed Win XP Pro on my 1530 thanks to the info in this great thread. A couple of things that I noticed. I have four monitors listed on the device manager. Three default monitors, and one plug and play. I can delete all but one, or all of them, but when I reboot, they all come back.

Second thing is that when I shutdown/restart, my machine clears the desktop of icons, and hangs for > 10 minutes before getting to the blue "saving your settings" screen. I've checked the event logs, and nothing comes up as a warning/error.

    Any troubleshooting tips?

    Thanks

I have the same multiple monitors list. Very odd but no effect on performance.

I have not experienced shutdown/restart hanging though. Perhaps it is a RAM issue? The 4GB in my M1530 kicks the crap speed-wise out of my Toshiba with 1.25GB.

    techNOguy-

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one with the multiple monitors issue. I will scratch that off of the troubleshooting list. I am still trying to figure out the long shutdown issue. If I find anything, I'll post it here.

    Hey guys. It's been a while. ;)

I just put a small partition on my drive for an XP install. I needed to be able to record with my Bass PODxt Live and there are no Vista drivers.

At any rate, I'm running into some trouble. I cannot get the SATA drivers to work. I integrated them into the boot disc (though I'm not sure how well it worked). I then checked the device manager and it still says ATA. I then tried the "Lazy Method" but the installer says that my computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements.

I've been using XP all day with no problems, but then I tried getting into Vista and it won't let me. I turned the AHCI and flash something or another (whatever had to be disabled to turn on ATA) and all that did was result in a reboot cycle in XP. I tried getting to the OS selection menu (not sure what I pressed, but it worked) and Vista was not an option.

Is there anything I can do to get around this?

I just found a link to a site explaining how to dual boot. Hopefully I can still get it to work, even though I did a few things out of order.

    ---

After looking at the guide, it looks as though the only hard part will be getting the AHCI thing resolved. Everything else I've done seems to follow what was recommended (new partition, install XP as normal, and then from there I just have to repair the Vista boot thing and set it up to handle both.)

    ---

It looks like I'm going to have to try the floppy method. I stopped by Walmart and they no longer sell USB floppy drives. I'll have to go out of town to pick one up on Monday. Ugh. Until then it looks like I'll be using XP.

Ok, this might be a completely idiotic question but how do i manually install these ini. files??? I re installed XP and am having a hard time with these drivers...
Also can i install the AHCi(intel matrix drivers) to switch from ata to Sata after i have Xp running? Or do i necessarily have to do it from the very beginning of the windows Xp install? Again if i can do it after how do i install the ini files??
Im not completely computer illiterate but I'm alsp not as savvy as most of you...Any help would be greatly appreciated

go to your device manager (right click my computer, go to properties | hardware tab | device manager). right click one of the devices that has a yellow ! icon, choose update driver. choose not to connect to the internet, and to manually choose the location of the driver. browse to where the driver's files are located from where you downloaded them, (make sure they are the 32bit XP version, if there are different versions), then hit next and finish, and repeat for all your other devices. it might be a good idea to restart between each device driver installation but i dont.

    Hi

I'm about to install XP Pro SP3 on my 1530, too. Vista simply sucks.

Did anyone with WiFi problems try the drivers from intel directly? Intel does offer XP drivers for their chipset and WiFi devices.

    Kind regards,
    exr

    All,

Great site and great thread. I am getting ready to order a Dell XPS M1530 to give to my wife as a birthday present. I have one computer here with Vista on it so I can help people who call me with Vista questions and that one is enough.

This thread has nicely explained how to do the XP upgrade from Vista, but at least two questions come to mind:

    1) I have seen no mention of drivers for the new LED backlighted LCD display. Is an XP driver available or is the LED technology just being powered by the hardware and the video card is the same and uses the same drivers as were used prior to the LED system?

    2) There are a number of hard drive, memory, bluetooth and network adapter options. I figured I would go with the Intel wireless network adapter thinking there might be more "universal" options for XP drivers for one of them than for a Dell branded card. Can anyone here wave the red flag and suggest against any option on one of these machines, knowing for a fact XP drivers and/or functionality issues of any type will be a problem?

My wife would have loved to have the backlit keyboard the Studio 15 has, but it looks like some real pros have come up with viable ways to do the XP upgrade to the XPS machine - ways which appear totally lacking on the Studio 15...so far anyway. Thanks to all of you for the hard work to date. :)

    Regards,

    Phil

no driver needed for the led display (or any display for that matter, only for the graphics card which is already mentioned in this thread), and there arent any problems with any of those communication devices (as far as i know), (no driver for memory either, and there is indeed a driver for the chipset which enables ahci, but no driver for the harddrive specifically). bluetooth isnt a problem (ive got it on my machine and it works with no issue), and the intel wireless can just use their own software for xp.

    good luck!

It's purely hardware (LED backlit instead of lamp backlit), and the video card is just the same.

The intel card works better even when the signal is low, and it is more stable. Go for it!

There is a thread in this forum on trying to make Studio backlit keyboard work with XPS laptop.

    All,

Thanks for the prompt feedback. It is reassuring to know there are many people that have already worked through this. I bought my father a Toshiba laptop to use for GPS navigation (15" screen versus 3-6" screen GPS unit) and the Toshiba was an absolute nightmare to convert to XP and the function keys still don't work because there are apparently no XP drivers for it. I am off to place the order and will be following this thread very carefully in upgrading it to XP once it shows up. :D

    Best Regards,

    Phil

Update 7/23/08: The computer was ordered last night. Shipping date is tentatively set for 8/8. I have read comments where people have received theirs earlier than anticipated. For a custom system can anyone chime in with how long recent deliveries (standard shipping) have taken?

Update 8/17/08: The computer was delivered on Friday and I will start the XP conversion tomorrow. Thanks again for all of your assistance.

Great guide. Thanks to OP and the others helping here.

I want to install XP on a backup drive, in a USB enclosure. My intent is that, when I need to develop using XP, I pull out the Vista internal drive and set the computer to boot from the external USB drive. I was started the XP install OK and the USB drive is recognized as C:, is reformated, and files are copied to it.

After the system reboots however, the system complains the internal drive is missing. It then starts to boot from the hard drive then produces the Blue Screen of Death. WHat could I be doing wrong? Should I omit the SATA drivers from the install disk nlite makes? Should I change the BIOS somehow? THe only change to the BIOS has been to move the USB port and CD/DVD drives up in the boot sequence.

[LATER] Found this link to a guide for installing XP on a USB device. Have not tried it yet. [/LATER]

    Hello All,

Just got my UK XPS M1530.... I hate Vista and am desperate to install XP Home....

I have read the tread here and am now a bit confused as to which and what versions I should be downloading...

What thread do I need to read that updates the orgianl post to an all singing and dancing version for XP? I am worried that I am going to go down a route where they may be no return. I have just purchased a copy of Acronis 11, if I backup to that will I be safe to return if all goes wrong...

    Cheers Guyz...

    Mik
