Yeah, I have been thinking about that, too. I live in New York City and a 100mbps+ down/15mbps up connection is available here for around 100USD/month. Also, you might want to look at your wireless router because that can make all the difference in the world.

You'll probably never hit the max theoretical bandwidth speed from your ISP. You have to remember that just because you have 50GB doesn't mean that the site that you're connecting to has 50GB of bandwidth to dedicate solely to your connection. At those speeds you're going to be limited by the speed of whatever site/server you're connecting to.

very true. What if you were downloading 50 different torrents from thousands of different users, could it make a difference then? Maybe it wouldn't but I thought it might. I really don't use torrents much anymore myself. Also, I have a 30mbps connection but that is a max and frequently it is as low as 8mbps (and even slower but rarely) and I used to have an 8mbps and sometimes it would run at 1mbps but when you move up to the highest end connection, they give you higher priority on bandwidth and provide minimum guaranteed speeds, etc. I have heard this common complaint from my friends with other ISPs, too. I guess that is why I was considering it myself.

i agree with the wireless router part, you may get better results from replacing your wireless router than just replacing the wireless card in your notebook. this is especially the case if you do upgrade your broadband to 100Mbit cxn.

as the Intel 5300 is already 802-N, you should already get speeds of 150+MBit. there is no point upgrading your wireless card and getting 100Mbit broadband if your router is only sending you speeds of 54Mbit wirelessly (i'm assuming you only have a 802-g router).

Yeah, and you can get a 450mbps or 300mbps N router that is complete junk, too. I bought a Netgear 150/300mbps N router a couple years back and returned it and got a new one and installed updated firmware on both and both were slower than the D-Link 802.11g router that I had at the time which was years old and the connections would drop all the time (and never with the D-Link). I have heard similar about other routers, too. The thing I do is read Amazon.com and other reviews but usually I start with Amazon (due to the sheer volume of reviews) and try to find the products that have the highest ratings but also the lowest number of 1- and 2-star reviews.

And, high quality, higher speed wireless routers (and corresponding cards) are extremely helpful when dealing with network attached storage and streaming HQ/HD videos on your wireless network.

I just formatted and reinstalled windows on my XPS 1645.
This time i installed the intel rapid storage drivers, which I had never installed before.

Just wanted to share that my bad company 2 loading times have been halved, if not more!
Yes, reinstalling does make a faster PC but BC2 was on my other partition, which wasn't changed.
Also, my windows 7 install was in a decent state before (=not all cluttered up).

Do they really make that much of a difference?
    I have a 500GB seagate HDD

so far i haven't had troubles with a router,. most recently i bought a NetGear Wireless-N router, and it works very well. i get even 300Mbit speeds over wireless, and clean gigabit ethernet as advertised. granted this is on my local network between computers - my broadband DSL is only 1.5Mbit so i hit my theoretical limit each time i need to download an updated driver.

rule of thumb, if it's cheap, it's not worth it.

i still recommend getting a newer wireless router over the wireless card - at first. you can easily return a router to your local Best Buy (as an example) but returning a wireless card you bought over eBay or Amazon can be a headache to work for.

    just my 2 cents :)

I am 100% with you. Currently, I have special circumstances because I travel a lot and so I am at the mercy of the router (and its location) of where I am staying and so I only could change my equipment (ie, wireless card, antennas, etc.).

yeah the one i just got is something similar (WNR3500L).

you should definitely be able to disable the wireless in the modem/router and plug in your own wireless router.

i would say if you are going to upgrade your broadband to 100Mbit, keep your Intel 5300 for now. it should be more than fast enough for your purposes and you may not need to upgrade your wireless card after all.

you should be asking these questions in a different thread. this thread here is for drivers and such :)

ok..so the modded graphic driver...for xps 1645..worth it or not? i remember I installed it on my older m1330 and it decreased performance in my situation....any experience? should i stick with the old graphic driver from dell? the extent of my gaming is MMOs like vindictus..which tend to be on the higher end of quality for MMOs

Install the standard video driver right from the AMD website. There's little to no reason to use a modded driver. The ones from the Dell website work, but they're WAY out of date, and a lot of new features and performance improvements have been made since then.

Very cool, I didn't expect this for quite awhile. I think I read that it would not be out for quite some time still (like 2Q-3Q 2011) a few months back. Did you install it? What do you think? Thanks!

You won't have to wait long, should be out 'officially' within a week or so.

Edit: Let me re-word this. It is 'officially' out already, released to OEMs, which is where this copy comes from. It should be released to end-users via Windows Update within a week or so.

    Hey I'm a computer newbie..please help.

I have studio xps 1640 and when I tried plugging in my SDHC card, my computer won't recognize it. All it does is make a sound but nothing appears on my screen. In My Computer I don't have a removable disk besides the one for my blu ray player so maybe I need to install a driver?

When I go to device manager, it says that the SD memory card has a driver problem. What do I need to do to fix this?

i think you need to install the "Ricoh Card Reader" driver (or whatever the full name of the driver is).

go to the Dell Drivers download page and make sure you install the Ricoh driver. then you should be able to read your SD card.

I installed the Ricoh driver but it still doesn't seem to work. The removable disk for the sd card reader still does not show on My Computer. When i go on device manager, it says the device cannot start (Code 10) I tried to troubleshoot but that could not fix the problem. The SD card reader on shows up on device manager when I plug my SDHC card into my computer btw. When I plug it out, it disappears. Anybody else have this problem on their 1640?

in Device Manager, have you tried uninstalling the device driver, and then "Scan for hardware changes" to install the driver again? This happens to me every once in a while, but uninstalling the driver and scanning for hardware changes usually fixes it for me.

i wonder if those who are knowledgeable loook at my question the way i react to my cousin who askis me to teach her how to edit a photo of her friends AKA crop out one of her "friends"

There's been too many improvements since the last Dell driver release to list here. If you want, just go to the AMD driver site, and look through the change log for each driver release.

To be honest, updating graphics drivers is pretty easy now:

    1. Go to add/remove programs and double click the "ATi Catalyst Install Manage", choose express/all/whatever to make it remove everything.
    2. Reboot.
    3. Install new Catalyst package.

Been working like a charm for me for a long time now, and I update with every new driver release.

If you want a safe and clean installation, after uninstalling from the Add/Remove Programs.

Go to Phyxion.net - Downloads and download Driver Sweeper.

Install it and let it clean any further remaining ATI driver files/registries.

    Then install the new package.

That's what I do when updating a new graphic driver.

Even better :D I used to be super anal about always removing old drivers before installing new ones (ie, doing the reboot into safe mode and running a driver cleaning program), but with Windows 7 and the improvements made to the entire Catalyst package, it really isn't necessary to be so paranoid anymore :p

It's okay to uninstall with the uninstalling package alone but sometimes I still have the trouble of getting stuck in the black screen while installing the new driver. I usually get over that by doing the driver sweeper, it always works perfectly.
