Hey guys, I have a XPS 1645 and I have recently reformatted the laptop. Is there a particular order that I should install the latest BIOS and drivers?

& Should I use a program to install the drivers.

I had major throttling issues before the format and under all current versions it seems to be fine!

Cheers guys, any help would be great!

Then you can download the latest bios no problem.
Then install drivers from 1st page here. (program? No idea what you mean)

But the order doesn't really matter.

For driver install, start with the Intel Chipset, then Intel Rapid Storage, then Video, then Audio. After that it doesn't matter. You don't have to do them in that order, but it's recommended to get the Chipset out of the way first, as everything else runs through it, then install in order of importance.

Is it just me, or is the new Catalyst driver download currently unavailable? I can navigate to the AMD download page just fine, but when I go to download the actual file it gives me a "Server not Found" error.

Edit: nvmd, it's back up and running now

Edit#2: This version is the first one ever to give me the "CCC stopped working" error after installing. A complete uninstall (including driver removal/delete) and reinstall did not fix the problem. I couldn't do the key removal thing from 2 pages ago, as the mentioned ATI/AMD key wasn't there. Work continuing...

Edit #3: Rebooting for the 4th time magically fixed it....????

"Have you tried turning it off and on again?" :D

I had this same problem last time with 11.5. But rebooting a few times automagically got the CCC to start opening up. Seems to be a frequent issue with CCC (though AMD has really "fixed" it compared to the <10.x drivers where you had to completely remove the old ones before installing newer ones)

Sad to hear that seeker, Hope its working for you now. I assume most of the time the issue with CCC not working is an issue with MS Visual C++ Runtime 2010. Try upgrading both x64 and x86.

Though I know it would be fixed coz you have good knowledge already ;)

Yep, I have that covered. I hate the way that Microsoft runs their C++ libraries though. Every game you install, every driver you install, every Windows Update installs a new version, but they always leave the old version installed. In the end you have like 8 versions of the same library installed, and there are now 6 different libraries (2005, 2008, 2010, each in x86 and x64). Whenever a new one comes out, I uninstall all others first, then install the newest one from the Microsoft download site instead of through Windows Update.

Totally agreed. I do the same. Once had a real hard time removing Visual Studio 2005, but luckily found a removal tool which cleaned it all ;)

They should have some mechanism to check if the version is there then skip otherwise install, Do we need to teach them if, else now hehe ;) Also Upgrade the old once and not install all as standalone.

I seem to be having an issue with the non-Dell ATI drivers. Whenever I attempt to install them, it only installs the CCC and says that it did not install the actual driver because it could not detect my hardware. I'm using a Studio XPS 1645 with an ATI 5730, what could possibly be wrong?

First, THANK YOU for putting this thread together. I was plagued by STOP 000007b blue screens of death on suddenly and too often crashing windows, I suspected video drivers (the message screen suggested that and the video often did something "funny" just b4), then did a complete update using your advise and the stop errors are gone. Video over HDMI is behaving better, too.

    ----------------

    as to Ricoh driver update:

The popup at the start of the extraction of the file linked to for the "Ricoh update" says the file is for Latitudes and not the XPS 1645.

Does anyone know of a Ricoh driver update post the Dell website Ricoh CardReader R5U230 Release Date: 12/1/2009 version:2.07.01.02, A02
    ???????

Is it possible to replace the Ricoh drivers? and does anyone know what to replace these with that might provide better backward compatibility on the XPS1645? I have card readers and cards (smartmedia) that worked on XP, do not currently work on my Windows 7 XPS 1645 with the current setup (mini card adapter in slot and over USB) but from time to time find these do work on other Windows 7 systems elsewhere (hotels, ICafes ... ).

    ----------------

Finally whle I'm here, I just came across the following in the System Info:
"IOCBIOS ROOT\LEGACY_IOCBIOS\0000 This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed."

I've seen this, all along, elsewhere, in "tune windows" utilities, etc., maybe the Dell messages, but googled and decided I never had a problem with updating any BIOS's, have ignored it, and just wonder if anyone knows more about it.

I guess you are downloading the desktop Catalyst drivers. Go to this link and download the Mobility once. Let me know if the issue persists.

It is actually the same category of chip provided on XPS and Latitude systems. Dell updates their Drivers page only for a short period, As this system is EOL now they wont update its drivers page anymore. Simply install the driver from this page, It is the latest and is compatible on XPS1645.

Try Factory defaults of BIOS in F2 screen on startup. Install The Chipset driver again. Let me know if it persists and upload a snapshot if possible. Thanx.

I am not very sure. Try the chipset driver with overall switch.

    In Run, [Path]chipset.exe -overall

Where does it reside in device manager? Unknown devices or in some category?

The good news is the IOCBIOS message is gone. The bad news is this is after a Window Reinstall maybe after something really FU with updating HDMI sound drivers (btw I did NOT try your 'be careful' suggestion). Through getting everything set up again after reinstall via backup program files I am reminded of something and wonder if that IOCBIOS message resulted from an insufficient uninstall of the Intel Desktop Control Center after a futile attempt (I do not have an Intel board) at diagnosing over an overheating problem in 2010.

But I am now back to where I was over a year ago that started this whole thing (with coming here, then ATI ...). After both windows reinstall and after the IDT sound updates (tried both one linked here and the earlier Dell update) my HDMI sound does not work properly. I've got two situations, HDMI cable to:
    1) HDTV (pcm) Yes picture, NO sound (despite green bar fluct.),
    2) Though HDMI to RCA scaler to SD television (stereo) > get sound.

I'm hesitant to go on to ATI updates. I wonder:
Shouldn't there be an IDT HDMI sound driver (not a non-HDCP compliant Windows sound driver) under playback devices? I've tried device manager/remove that W driver and running the IDT setup numerous times.

Where is the information that tells me what to expect from the Dell IDT updates?

I hope you mean the red ATI HDMI Audio Device R2.61 2011/6/3 ?????

BTW, I WAS loading (my final step) that driver when the 'crash' that caused my reinstall occurred. That is, when I rebooted I rebooted successfully but my PC and screen was frozen with an Adobe Flash available update window. I could only power off. I have had my reboots' screens frozen before coincident with a Adobe Flash update window and try to keep that "feature" off but it keeps coming back. It is quite aggravating. I can only surmise that the freeze prevented completion of the driver update. I was no longer able to boot past a certain point where a windows start up sound occurs, even in safe mode.

****EDIT**** Oooops. I had made some comments here and above about not finding an IDT HDMI driver when in fact the appropriate thing to do is a Dell website 'Video' update ATI 4670 - http://support.dell.com/support/dow...g=&SystemID=STUDIOXPS1645&TabIndex=&typeid=-1
that solves the problem without going on to ATI or Realtek website downloads.*****EDIT*****

That news came along just in time as I was having a problem with 11.7 where that DARNED old Windows non-HDCP driver popped it's way back in AGAIN, then I messed something up trying to get the right audio driver back (use Device manager to remove the old non-HDCP driver just before running 11.7 again).

11.8 went perfectly but there was a write error and I had to save the intermediate file 11-8_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe and run as administrator. The HDMI cord got kicked out once since 11.8 then the 'HDMI audio not found' messages began but re-running the 11.8 setup fixed that << good to keep around!

I had to fix a Bluray burning problem and tracked down some old news on the Panasonic UJ235 to reload both:

    R227099 Panasonic UJ235A 12.7mm SATA 4X BD-RE Firmware V A01 OEM 1.10
    ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/rmsd/PANASONIC_UJ235A-12-7MM-SATA_A01_R227099.exe

    R234886 Panasonic UJ235A 12.7mm SATA 4X BD-RE Firmware V A02 OEM 1.11
    Drivers and Downloads

which I believe are the only updates for the Panasonic UJ235A burner.

After my 'experience' with the last Bluetooth 370/375 update I won't touch another unless it says XPS1645, but my Bluetooth mouse drop-outs seem to have gone away for now, anyway.

I believe it is (at the time of its release) a small collection of Windows Updates that were not released through the standard 'Windows Update' program, but were available as separate updates for people experiencing certain issues by downloading them from Microsoft.com. Dell picked the ones that apply to the system and bundled them up as a download. For whatever reason Microsoft didn't think the updates were important enough to just push out through 'Windows Update.'

These updates may have all been included in the SP1 download.

Anyone know how to get the multimedia keys working again with iTunes 10.4.1 when the window is not in focus?

I have tried replacing the mmkeys.dll like most google search results will tell you. It has worked in the past but now with this new iTunes update it does not work. Any ideas?

The only solution I've been able to find is this program called HKTunes. Its kind of a work-around, because it's a program that runs in the background, but it's pretty lightweight, so I've been able to deal with it for now. The nice thing is that launching the program automatically launches iTunes as well, so you don't have to open both to use your media keys.

I do hope that someone finds a permanent fix for this though, as I would prefer for the functionality to be built into iTunes.

How is the new IDT driver (IDT 92HD73C1 Audio Driver : v6.10.0.6314, Released: 1/17/2011 from the main page) working? I found out it is for AlienWare laptops, any compatibility issues with xps1645?

Yay driver updates! Also, I'm already running the latest Catalyst drivers... all good so far (for people that like to know they work before installing them)

    try this one
mmKeys.dll – Use a multimedia keyboard with iTunes at Everything iTunes [Windows Version]
also download file named: MediaKeyProcessing.vbs from this website: Scripts for iTunes for Windows

they both should be in the itunes plugin folder, and you should run the second vbs script before opening itunes. it will ask you to change the value True-to-false and vise verse. if it says True, leave it and dont change. after doing that multimedia keys are working flawlessly, even when i'm playing games.
