That's the Ricoh RL5C852 xD-Picture Card Controller. Use the drivers from the windows vista x64 page. They are working correctly with Windows 7.
BenUK, thanks a lot for the touchpad and quickset drivers links. I'm trying them now.
edit: the alps driver has the bug with the animated cursors![]()

Thats the version I'm running and I've got zero problems with cursors. Dunno why you you do

Thanks.
P.S. Just hope that W7 is worth its price based on consumer's (me) satisfaction. -

I'm having very inconsistent performance with World of Warcraft on my XPS 1530 using Windows 7. I've done an clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium, and updated drivers via Windows Update. I've tried both the current and beta Nvidia drivers.
The problem is very low (5) fps in moderate to intense combat, and even just sitting around I'll have spikes from ~70 down to ~15,20. I've wiped WoW's settings, played with no mods, it hasn't made a difference. My Windows Index is fine at 5.3, same as it was on Vista. It is only the in-game performance that has changed.
My other issue is the sound, still very crackly from some people on Ventrilo. I have no idea if these issues are related, but I was wondering what drivers people were updating outside of the windows update ones. I know the HDD driver was suggested, but I'm having trouble locating that. A new sound driver may be in order as well.
Thanks for any help. -
@dan - what version of the video drivers that you are using currently ?
Also is Dan's problem purely a Driver Issue ? -
[email protected] Notebook Enthusiast
I am using 195.39 Drivers, straight from Nvidia's site.
As for the drivers being the source of the problem, that I cannot say. WoW is the only game I really have, I am installing 3dmark and HL2 tonight to see if I have similar issues.
http://upload.vindicatum.com/images/disk.jpg
This is something that also struck me odd, the erratic disk usage. More testing incoming tonight, hopefully I can find this Ricoh driver as well. -

I am using the beta drivers now, but I experienced the same issues with the non betas.

Tried those out, same deal.
What I've done now is stopped -every- non MS service from starting up via msconfig, as well as every item in startup. I load up WoW with zero mods, and stick myself looking at a wall.
Staring at the wall I will hover around 210fps. Randomly, my fps will drop to 140fps. So I don't think this problem is a rendering issue, or a mod issue, and maybe not even a video driver issue. I've also checked task manager during these drops in FPS and have not seen any programs hogging CPU power.
At this point, still stumped. I'm going to post this on the official WoW forums and see if there's any insight there that may help the greater 1530 community with similar issues. -
so far i installed only video drivers from nvidia site, sigmatel hd audio from dell..
i have "base system device" still unrecognized in device manager?
anyone know what are the bluetooth drivers to install?
xps m1530, in device manager i see dell truemobile 355 bluetooth + EDR but pairing headset is no go.. says i have to update drivers.. -
With me the only unrecognized device when I pair my phone with bluetooth is Sync ML that I'm installing manually from the original Bluetooth drivers. -
yup, just figured it out on my own.. installed the 3.55.01 version of the ricoh driver from asus site..
do you recommend installing any intel drivers? my win ex score is 5.5..
now i have to figure out if to install broadcomm drivers from dell site or not?
edit: one more problem i noticed.. i cannot scroll using touchpad! i installed synaptics v14 drivers from their site.. -
bluetooth issue solved: installed this driver (newest).. working great!
http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=23452&dscr=Broadcom BRM2045 and BRM2046 Bluetooth Driver Version 6.2.1.500&uid=24766478
hehe solved the touchpad issue too.. i wrongly installed synaptics drivers and dell m1530 uses alps device.. anyhow, installed the 7.5.303.117 version of the driver from the toshiba site, everything is running smoothly :8
i haven't installed any intel drivers so far, do i even have to? not sure if they'll improve anything or not.. -

I've done some further testing with no real progress.
Running WoW with OpenGL also caused frame drops, but the fps remained constant (albeit slow) when running only software rendering.
I also installed L4d2 demo, and experienced the same lag issues as in WoW.
Tonight I am going to do a full clean install, only running windows update and installing nvidia's non beta driver. I'll let you know how that goes. -

Read the complete thread and found it very useful. Here is a summary of my experience, issues, and solutions with Win7 Pro 64bit.
Initial issues:
- WEI score of 1.0 on graphics and 'Base system device' error in Device Manager
Solutions:
- Installed latest video drivers downloaded direct from Nvidia
- Installed Ricoh card reader driver from Dell (as metioned earlier)
This resulted in new WEI score of 5.7 (no issues with disk cache being enabled)
Other software installed was the Upek fingerprint software (this seems more accurate than before) and Quickset (for volume controls), and webcam software from Dell. Earlier post by bogdi19988 has a good set of links.
No issues with sound or wireless as reported by others. Overall very happy - 2 weeks of solid stable speedyness. If your reading this thinking of going w7-64 on your m1530 I would recommend it! -

Proceeded with a completely fresh install of Win 7, applied only the windows updates and the nvidia driver, and I am still experiencing consistent, repeatable frame drops in all games (WoW and L4D2 Demo). It is a bit discouraging to see my problem is solitary, Nik, did you install anything else? Perhaps some kind of hard drive controller driver or some such?
-
-
[email protected] Notebook Enthusiast
Which Ricoh chipset driver did you use, the vista 64 from dell's site? This is just the card reader, correct?
-
Anyways now we are in the same boat . I am facing lags in Nfs Shift. Trying my hand at different drivers from laptop Video 2 go . Was wondering, is the 8600M GT now not powerful enough to handle these games ? -
[email protected] Notebook Enthusiast
No way, In Vista I ran fine, and in XP I run fine. It is definitely somehow connected to Windows 7, though I cannot say if it is an XPS 1530 specific issue.
-
For the Base System Device (PCI Bus 3, device 9, function 3) problem, download and install the Ricoh R5c8xx driver
Dell link for a Vista 64-bit Ricoh driver
I have been collecting many of the driver downloads (all in one place) in my blog: http://keyliner.blogspot.com/2009/10/dell-xps-m1530-windows-7.html -
Do you know any software which can log the GPU and CPU temp readings while I am playing the game ? Maybe the GPU is getting too hot at times.... -
[email protected] Notebook Enthusiast
I've personally ruled out temps. I can experience the fps drop immediately from a cold boot, and then in semi-consistent intervals following. Tonight I will be trying yet another full reinstall and swapping around a few drivers.
Just for completions sake, I have xp installed and i
not experiencing any of the fps drops. -
Hmm but a cold boot does not necessarily mean that the GPU is not getting hot. It takes less than 3 secs for the GPU to reach temperatures of 82 degrees centigrades. ( Source: Speedfan Installed on my machine). I too plan to dl some video drivers and do some research. Also I plan to follow some suggestions as posted in this thread here :-
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=172717
and see of it works out
In the end my question still remains do I upgrade to Win 7 HP x64 ? Currently the one that I am using has not been activated and I can use it a few days more before it starts to bug me for activation. -
No driver for the Alps Touchpad allows me to get animation in the animated cursors. No matters it is DELL branded or the generic one released for Toshiba. With the latter which is newer version I can't get also circular scroll and zoom.
After I login in Windows I have 10-20 sec of working animated cursors but after that they freeze. If I go to the Mouse properties -> Pointers and choose Default Profile or change something and click Apply/OK the cursors get working again and after some period freeze.
IMO the problem is caused by any of the 3 applications running for Alps in TaskManager. -

Despite this rather large issue with framerates, I am still happy with my purchase of Windows 7. For me, it runs better than even XP, and is really a jump forward for me in terms of satisfaction with my OS.
Trust me, if I didn't like Windows 7 as much as I do I'd have said screw it on this fps issue! -
I think I have made some progress on the glitchy sound issues. I have installed win 7x86 but that made no difference, so I therefore assume that what has worked for x86 will also work for x64.
Issue seems to be a combination of sound driver, card reader driver and bluetooth driver. In all of my previous testing I did not bother to install card reader drivers or bluetooth drivers as I thought there were insignificant. I don't make much use of them, so did not really card if they worked. There were also no reported issues in Device Manager, and there are still none after my changes.
I have been sitting here now for 30 mins without a single glitch in Winamp playing mp3s. I also watched a film last night in VLC for a couple of hours glitch free. I have noted that Winamp is the most prevalent program for sound glitches in Win 7, with WMP being substantially better.
Drivers I have currently installed are:
IDT 6224 sound drivers
Ricoh_R5C833_VT_080611 card reader driver
Bluetooth_Broadcom_V7a_6.2.1.500 bluetooth driver
None of these drivers came from the Dell site, I think the audio driver was from Laptop2Go, one from Broadcom and the other from Gateway (I just used Google to get them)
The combination of these three seems to have helped a LOT.
I have also tried using the standard audio Vista x86 drivers from Dell. These were terrible without the card reader and bluetooth drivers. With them it was substantially better, but after prolonged use the glitches returned. By themselves the audio drivers only playback one or two glitch free mp3s per reboot. After the Bluetooth and card reader drivers they manage for 30 mins plus, but fail after hibernation.
The drivers posted above seem to be better, however the testing continues....
EDIT: I did see someone mention software that could measure the delays you are getting causing these sound issues. I had a look but could not find out what program they were referring to. Any chance someone could drop a link to it please? -
That is the software:
http://www.thesycon.de/dpclat/dpclat.exe
I had some partial success with going to WPA encrypting for the WiFi and more consistent signal arround 80-90% from the WiFi router. The glitches are very rare already.
Btw there is difference between the software showing the glitches and the real audible glitches. And also I have to try these broadcom bluetooth drivers
because on the vista I was not hearing the glitches with some additional installed drivers and now I was confident in the built-in versions in Windows 7 that led me to scratchy sound. -
Has anyone been able to get BOTH audio out ports to work at the same time? I seem to have seperate devices for each port in the control panel, but only one works at a time. I miss being able to watch a movie on a plane and have two sets of headphones plugged in without an adaptor. Worked fine in Vista.
M. -
Thanks for the link Suren. For me my Vista install is perfect for audio quality, hence it taking me some time to get back to trying to work with Win 7
mpmt - I have not needed to use both audio headphone jacks before, but I just tested them for you and they worked. One headphone socket was to my amp, the other to some headphones, no changes to setup, just plugged in and it worked fine. -
Just downloaded the dpc software to have a play around.
I've finished watching a movie, that for the last two hours did not glitch once. I've then loaded Winamp and I have sound glitches all over the place. So, armed with the new software I have been enabling and disabling devices all over the place to see what I could do.
Since the film I have had one glitch every two seconds roughly (yes, that bad). Disabling the video driver has reduced that to one glitch in 2 minutes.
Useful info perhaps, but no solution as yet......the testing continues -
Add the driver list the current video drivers direct from NVidia:
Drivers I have currently installed are:
186.81_notebook_win7_winvista_32bit_international_whql video drivers
IDT 6224 sound drivers
Ricoh_R5C833_VT_080611 card reader driver
Bluetooth_Broadcom_V7a_6.2.1.500 bluetooth driver
Another step in the right direction. Without a reboot they have fixed my Winamp issues just so long as I am not doing anything with the machine. As soon as I do things I do get the odd sound issue. -

Also any update on the Alps Drivers which seem to work with Windows 7 64 bit ? -
[email protected] Notebook Enthusiast
I used the current non betas on nvidia's site, number escapes my memory and I'm on my phone at the moment. The only thing that changed from the last time I clean installed was the intel drivers. For now, I don't see any reasons why they aren't the cure, being that they both are hard drive related.
-
The driver for Nvidia that I'm using is 191.07. The glitches are increasing when I scroll down-up in Firefox. -
However the game plays fine on my Xp x64 ! -

Are 2 GB RAM on M1530 enough for getting a stable Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, or should I install only the 32-bit Windows 7 version ? And one more question : is it possible to upgrade Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate, or would be a clean installation of Windows 7 the better option ?
Thanks in advance. -
Can the Studio XPS13 Windows 7 Quickset be used on the m1330, or do you need to use Vista's?
-
You can upgrade from Vista ultimate to Win 7 Ultimate provided they both are 32/64 bit. U have to do a clean install if you are moving from 32 bit to 64 bit or vice versa. -

Hi,
I thought subscribers to this forum might like to share my journey into Windows 7.
After reading this forum It was with some trepidation that I decided to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, however, I decided to carry on.
I purchased a WD 320GB hard-drive (£38) the same as I had installed from Dell and located all the Dell XPS M1530 Windows 7 64 Bit drivers I could find from Dell and at ( http://keyliner.blogspot.com/2009/10/dell-xps-m1530-windows-7.html ). I decided on replacing the hard-drive as this gave me the easy option of returning to a working system quickly.
I installed the disk and started by booting from the Dell supplied MediaDirect cd selecting option 1, then I booted from the Windows 7 CD and installed the Windows 7 64-bit O/S, without applying any windows updates I ran the rest of the Mediadirect install from the supplied CD, then installed all the Dell 64-Bit drivers only then did I let Windows update.
All the functionality appears to work the touch strip Mediadirect button does what it should do, all the sound touch buttons work and show on screen, all the cd touch buttons work.
I have some added things I did not have before in that if you turn the wireless and bluetooth off using the switch then you get graphical notification on screen.
Quickset also works.
The finger print reader works, infact seems more realiable than before with at present no failures I did previously have to swipe my finger 2 or 3 times.
My wireless seems to be more sensitive not sure how, but I appear to see more wireless networks around me than previous and where I normally sit downstairs my own wireless signal shows full strength (my router is upstairs at the front of the property) when previously it was at three bars.
The only issue I have is that occasionally my Dell Bluetooth mouse stops working if left idle, the only way to restart it is to swithch the wireless/bluetooth switch of and on and it immediately returns to working of course a reboot does the same.
So if anyone has a fix for this I'd be grateful.
I'm 3 days in and the only other issues are around Windiws 7 64-bit and application support with regard to other applications I run, no 64-bit flash player. -
Forgot to mention bios is at A12
Windows experience Score 5.6
Memory 5.6
Processor 5.6
