I agree with you! If Dell doesn't have a great redesign for the XPS line then they will be behind in the excitement and buzz Ivy Bridge is bringing. Lets see what Dell and Apple does with their new laptop offerings! Heck...i might have to buy both!
-
I don't know if I have missed this, but does anyone know how easily the drive and ram can be replaced on the new 15. I won't have the cash to get an ssd at release, but I want to be able to put one in later. Maybe Bill could chime in?
-
@12eric,
It should be pretty straight forward unless they use some special sized HDD (which is highly unlikely)... I'm running SSD in my laptop now and Ill be transferring that to the new one.
Can anyone share the link to the latest HP Envy, Samsung and Sony laptops which are similar to what we expect from the XPS? -
Got sick of waiting for Dell and just ordered an Envy 17.
-
they r pretty easy to find man just look them up
-
those S series are awsome...
-
Dear Dell-Bill_B, I don't know if you can answer, but do you think we will finally have a blu-ray burner optic drive? Or the trend is to keep a blu-ray reader/DVD burner? Thank you in advance
-
the bluray burner was already an option in the L502x
-
Here you go.
Laptops | HP® Official Store
Just go in Customization & you will have Ivy Bridge & new GPU. -
I'm pretty sure that the option was
1) DVD burner
2) Blu-Ray Reader / DVD Burner
Check here. -
oh ok. in australia it is an option. i have one myself
its a Panasonic/Matsh!ita UJ-240
-
Cool! I want it too!
I saw that now you can get a 25% off for xps 15 and xps 17 with this code: V87DN4018S0XBC
Until 6 June.

After 87 pages decided to make a profile
I'm highly interested in the XPS but am really in the need of a new laptop because my Studio XPS was stolen last month..
As it takes way to long for the XPS to come I started looking at the Sony's and HP's that are posted here. But I often see that there's only an internal GPU in them (HD4000). As I won't use my pc for much gaming but a lot of CAD/CAM 3D and rendering I was wandering if the HD4000 will for fill my needs as well? Or will it just frustrate me to not have bought an 'external' GPU? -
This maybe OT but HP just released the new Ivy Bridge Pavilion dv6t in Japan and the price is really cheap! Maybe there are no direct comparisons but with almost same spec, I can say HP Japan laptop price are roughly up to 15% cheaper than Dell Japan.
Not too bad looking laptop + 45W Ivy Bridge quad-core CPUs + GT 650M GDDR5 + Full HD matte IPS screen + cheap price. dv6t is really tempting
Btw, if I not mistaken due to thermal limitation, the only Ivy Bridge quad-core CPU for L521x is the 35W i7 3612QM. -
I'd say only 2 things:
1) Dell always offers 10% off codes
2) HP's building quality is awful, not comparable (IMHO) with Dell's one -
Unfortunately this maybe true for people in US.
Outside US, I think Dell/Alienware is bit overprice
We only get the discount codes when the laptops are at the end of it's cycle (new model is coming)
I agree with you but the new dv6t is not too bad. For example, the new dv6t keyboard is better (no flex) than previous dv6t and L502x mushy keyboard. -
Where do you come from? I'm italian and here I always see the 10% OFF code, also for the newest xps models. My brother bought the XPS 15 last year (february 2011) and used the code
-
Other companies already put up amazing laptops eg. Sony and Asus, I hope Dell will not disappoint us and make the waiting worthwhile....
-
In my case, I'm from Costa Rica and sometimes (like once or twice a year) I receive 20-25% coupon codes from Dell (last time I received one of those was on november), most of the times (like 2-3 times per month) Dell offers US$100 discount on any laptop.
-
Does anyone from outside of the US(I think it's different there) know if Dell offer discount codes straight away on the new laptops?
-
Here you can find many codes, check for your country

Sony's multimedia-centric VAIO F gets folded into new 15-inch VAIO S 15 -- Engadget
That new Sony looks pretty good, IPS screen is the way forward, I have an IPS screen on my smartphone which I use all day and one on my tablet, I want one on my laptop, end of story.
The 640M LE is still around the 550M as far a performance and can likely be overclocked, maybe even up to 640M speeds, the only thing is that I've never seen a Sony laptop with good speakers. The new XPS 15 isn't going to match the L501x/502x as far as sound quality according to Bill, there probably won't be a sub, so maybe the Sony S15 with a set of dedicated speakers is the way to go, the black looks nice and has a full numberpad and that IPS screen! -
Unless it's changed, my understanding is that this is the same IPS screen as on the Envy 15, which I returned twice because of its inability to show the color red. I would personally much have a high quality TN panel, like the one on my current XPS 1640, than that IPS. Hopefully LG will start making a 15 inch IPS that shows red/violet
-
Because of the absence of any respons from Bill I wonder if he has been lobbying for some more press freedom
Give us some information bill! That way the L521x wont miss out on a lot of sales if its worth the wait!
I hate waiting but I'll wait another month if its worth it, otherwise I might just get one of the Sony Vaio's.. -
Where did you find this information? Do you have a link?
This is another laptop I am looking at with an IPS screen:
Review Asus Zenbook UX32VD Ultrabook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
This screen displays nearly the entire sRGB color space according to the review with a contrast of 1052:1
I'm actually looking at the UX31A ultrabook, which I hope has the same display as above. I think I'm gonna keep my L502x as a desktop machine. -
That's a 13" IPS, not the single model of 15" IPS screens that LG makes.
-
Correct, and as for a link, you can look at the various threads on this site with regard to the 15" panel, or Goggle either Sony Vaio or Envy 15 "orange reds."
-
I never said it was, I just said that it is an IPS screen with good colour reproduction and contrast ratio. This is what I am looking for in a laptop screen.
If you are going to make a statement it is commom courtesy to link to the source of that information, especially if asked, that's all.
I found the information here anyway, although it is not for the ivy bridge refresh of the Sony S15 with 640M LE that I was talking about in the first place, so we'll have to wait and see:
AnandTech - Sony VAIO SE: An IPS Laptop for Under a Grand -
This makes me guess information about the new models will be released June 7. -
It would be too easy!
Btw, yesterday Intel released the official price list for Ivy Bridge processors
-
Bill said that the 17in alternative will be out around mid-june with the XPS models to follow after that. So unless they changed that very recently, we won't see the new XPS on June 7.
-
Sigh, so close and yet so far apart...
-
Oh my! I really must get PR to either take the muzzle off or put up our blog posts on Direct2Dell sooner than I had planned. The crowd is getting anxious.
I believe dGPU is an option on much of the Lati line. Those things are sweet business class machines.
It's going to be very, very close.
Complete ground up redesign and a slight redefining of the direction of the XPS brand. My VP is going to talk about the brand in a blog post coming around the 22nd-24th.
Not really. You can service them all you want using our online tear down guides, but I'm told they are not the easiest to service. It's do-able, but not as easy as the current gen to tear down.
I saw their stuff, and indeed they make nice products. I'd still wait to at least have more to compare with.
It's like a big brother that maybe didn't have the same father. Quality looks and performance from Mama, but who's yo daddy?
Not easily, but possible. Tear down guides will be posted on or about launch day, per usual.
I'll have a chat with PR again. Doubt anything will change based on what my Merry Band of Men and I have to say, but I will give it a shot. -
Oh boy! Been following this for ages and I can't wait any longer. The 22nd seems so far away!!
Very excited for the announcement either way... If it's anything like the current XPS 13 and 15z (aside from the few issues), it'll be awesome... Hopefully it's still in the same price range ($999)!!
Any way you could reveal a little tid-bit of info to tide us over for the long wait? -
I will say this: If redefining the XPS line means axing the 17 (assuming nothing else but the Inspiron is coming): I'ma be cranky.
This is how it stands for me at the moment:
Looking for a 17" laptop, have a few contenders, but they all have problems:
ASUS N76NV - Only 6-cell battery
ASUS G75SV - No Optimus (I really don't know what R&D was smoking)
Samsung 7 Chronos - One hard drive, maybe lacking audio.
As it stands, if nothing better comes along, I'll be the owner of my first ever Samsung by Summer's end. Having said that I'd like to stick with Dell as their warranties are usually a lot more no-nonsense, and historically their machines are that bit less tedious to rip apart.
If Dell can bring a matte-screened, 8-9-cell carrying, 650M(+) running, Optimus enhanced, bass-thumping laptop to market, I'll be all over it. Either way I won't be ordering this until around July or so, but just my 0.02. -
Love this xD! Do you think the palm-rest and the areas around the keyboard will have the same rubberized feel as the XPS 13 or is that TMI? Although if it does have it, I would buy the laptop without question
!
-
I haven't been following this thread for a long time. Is there any mention of a design change or slight redesign? Or is this just a processor+gpu refresh?
-
Literally a couple posts up Bill mentions that it is a complete redesign. It is suppose to look somewhat similar to the XPS 13 but some definite differences.
-
The 22nd-24th is so far away and it doesn't even look like the release date. I thinking its got to be end of July for the official XPS release since the press release is also the day its available online for purchase.
Not really liking the sound of all the complete changes to the XPS lineup that will butcher the L702X design. -
At best, I m hoping for a PLS panel in XPS 15 L521x like the XPS One 27.........the new refresh of envy 15 looks really nice(IVB i7+HD7750m+1080p IPS),though I don't know whether they have fixed the color issue of the display or not.
-
sony, has come up with beast but i hope dell xps 15 will grave it but can any one explore the actual release dates of Dell xps 15
-
someone in the envy thread said they spoke to a sales peep and they gave them some bs about how hp has software to ensure proper color calibration or something like that, so no they still didnt fix it- damn shame its on sale right now for %33 off coupon killer deal minus the fail of a screen of course.
-
lol that would be me, I did talk to them and its the same panel. unfortunately iirc, that panel by LG is the only 15in ips panel available right now thats why HP is continuing to use it. The guy said the next iteration of the envy probably shouldnt have it when they do the redesign. I still went ahead and ordered it tho . I got 600$ off with the 33% coupon
. the screen isnt that bad..... My friend has the older one (3xxx) and yeah its obvious but not that distractiing. its still much better than most other panels...
-
With announcements from most of the major players now, I think this is a pretty reasonable concern. If the unveiling is scheduled for around July, people looking to buy now (seems like June is popular?) can pick up an Ivy Bridge HP, Sony, or Lenovo before the XPS is even announced. Seems risky to hold out so late...I'm pretty motivated to wait on Dell, but is the average shopper?
Okay, sounds good! Thanks for answering my question
-
So the release is gonna be somewhere between the June 22nd and July 1st? (Bills "very, very close" comment was over someone's drop dead date of getting the xps by July 1st)
-
Even apple is going to launch mbps in WWDC(11th-15th of June)!
-
This kind of suggests that they will be announced around June 28th and delivered around July 2nd IMO.
-
Guys, they realeased new Inspiron R with Ivy Bridge! I can see a small light at the end of the tunnel!
-
Dell-Bill_B,
Thanks for the reply and suggestion to wait for more options... however I as you know my deadline is June 30th... so If the XPS does not come before or ON June 30th I will be waiting for nothing.
This would suggest its going to be available for purchase on or before June 30th or you didnt know my deadline was 30th
-
Qbasix, are you really THAT much on a deadline? As I stated I pretty much understood that the XPS's are going to be announced around the 28th and first deliveries will be on July 2nd.
