Please a 15" model with <1080P display or all resonable GPUs will be eaten again. 640m (or 650m) would be perfect combined with the 35W Core i7 . Hopefully they can do something like this in a slim, metal case and without any noise at idle. + a good TN or even an IPS screen and I'll order it right away. Too late for such wishes? :p

Right now I don't see ANY model like this on the market. The closest seems to be the Samsung Series 7 BUT the screen is rubbish. Sony looks also nice but only the LE version of the 640m. Or did you guys find any other model which meets these specs? Please don't mention the Envy....I had one and was disappointed. Cooling was a joke, throtteling was always present....built quality was not as expected.

I would tend to agree with you (DvP) the Envy is a complete failure on HP's part.

Guys, did I forget any competitor(s) which could meet my requirements/wishes mentioned in the post above apart from the new Dell which was already released or which should be announced soon?

Oh dear... I have to say, I'm not a fan.

I'm wondering now what this not-XPS-but-not-Inspiron 17 incher will be...

(Unless it doesn't exist. Perhaps my line-reading skills have deteriorated.)

The new HP envy doesn't have a msata slot or it doesnt say it does, so I will not be getting it.... hopefully dell doesn't make the same mistake.

Been following this thread with lots of interest. Almost ordered an XPS15 almost 2 months ago but held off waiting for the refresh.

Not sure if this has been posted but Amazon has this listed:

    http://www.amazon.com/Dell-XPS-XPS15-9168sLV-15-Inch-Laptop/dp/B0081ZDX7S

Sorry if it has already been posted and I missed it.

It doesn't reveal anything new that I can see and most of the stuff makes no sense at all but fingers crossed the page gradually gets updated closer to release.

    Hi,

    Found something very interresting:

    Acer Aspire TimelineU M3-581TG-72636G25Mnkk (NX.RYKEK.001)

    Core i7-2637M 2x 1.70GHz ULV • 6144MB • 256GB SSD • DVD+/-RW DL • NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M 1024MB • 3x USB (2x USB 2.0, 1x USB 3.0)/Gb LAN/WLAN 802.11bgn • HDMI • 2in1 Card Reader • Webcam (1.3 Megapixel) • Multi-Touch Trackpad • 15.6" WXGA glare LED TFT ( 1366x768) • Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) • Li-Ionen-Akku (3 Zellen, 4850mAh, 8h Laufzeit) • 2.30kg

i7 ULV + 640m....super slim and good battery numbers. Up to 11 hours in the notebookcheck review:
Review Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3-581TG Ultrabook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews

I would not take the acer but i would be DEFINITELY interrested in something similar of a high quality brand. The CPU seems to have enough power for most games. The "real" i7 is overpowered for mobile GPUs in terms of games anyway.

    @ DrNobody
    No HP please! ;-)

It's ugly and it's heavy for the specs. From the early reports it gets really hot too. And the i7 ULV is too weak in many situations (RTS, MMOs, emulators...). The GT 640M has crappy DDR3. No notebook featuring a 1366*768 display should be called decent, that crappy res shouldn't even exist anymore in 2012. Acer has a pretty bad track record. Need I say more ? I could go on for a while.

No need to say more. Take more time to read: "I would not take the acer..."

BUT I might be interrested in a 15" i7 ULV notebook which has a quite strong GPU and NO 1080P display (which cannot be properly powered by more or less any GPU) in a thin notebook like I want to have.

You will probably have mixed reactions to the Inspiron R Special Edition, but it ticks some of your boxes.
Dell Inspiron R Special Edition | Ubergizmo
Dell warranty, Optimus/Enduro, 17", decent serviceability, sub woofer with Skull Candy speakers.
No matte and 6 cell battery are the downers for you.

Soft touch coating will be on all XPS, except the phone...if we were planning a phone. (<-LOL. Sorry, inside joke.)

It will be way before end of July. I wouldn't say butcher so much as improved. Mechanically, tech geeks may not be happy with the thinner profile with less airflow, but stylistically it's way more gorgeous. If you want a robust chassis with good airflow, (spoiler alert: I go all company line on you here) Alienware or Precision are for you.

Both guesses in the ballpark. After June 22 and before July 1.

As a parent, I would not play around with school deadlines. I would grab the Inspiron R Special Edition set to launch in the US soon, or check out our competitors. If you go with a competitor, we'll hope to catch you with better timing on your next upgrade cycle. (Or you could send her off with whatever she has and ship the XPS to her a few days late. :) Had to try.)

Check. Check. Check. Check. See you on Dell.com in a couple weeks and change.
Your hopes will not be dashed on the design front. Not at all similar in style.

Looking good. I suppose the Inspiron R keyboard is identical to that on the XPS 15 L502X (which I enjoy):

And, to me, no numeric keypad (which shifts the keyboard off center) is good.

Any chance IPS FHD displays will be offered? There seems to be a trend that. Almost all manufacturers (e.g. Asus, HP, Acer, Sony, Apple) are offering IPS now, at least in their premium machines.

IMHO this is more important than slim design. Cheap displays can ruin otherwise great devices.

Wow, that Inspiron 15r SE is going to be good competition for the XPS 15, I'm surprised at the GPU in the 17r SE, a 650m?? I hope we get something similar in the 15.

Thanks Bill. Alienware and Precision laptops are definitely out of the question for me. I'll just have to live with the design changes of the new XPS. I am sad to hear about the thinner profile with less airflow. I would have thought nowadays with the high processor speeds and graphics cards that airflow would be a focus in the XPS refresh since fan control from heat should not be compromised even for a thinner profile.

I just hope that the thinner profile on the XPS 17 will still accommodate for 2 hard drives as well as have ports on the back of the computer. Those are some of the features I loved most on the L702X.

Lower wattage chips from Intel, AMD and Nvidia are helping with cooling. So, the heat thing may not be a big issue. I have not done a Furmark run and watched temps on a unit yet, but I probably will closer to launch.

Off to compose my "please let me say more in light of the Sony and HP product launches stealing our thunder" email to PR now.

    Hi Bill,

I have another question for you, if that's OK (if you can't answer, I understand)...

Will the keyboard in the new XPS 14 be more like the one in the R (pictured here: http://www.ubergizmo.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Dell-Inspiron-R-special_05.jpg) or like the older generation? I ask because the key spacing and shape looks like it might work better for me than the one in e.g. the XPS 13.

Thanks again for answering my question earlier :)

    Awesome :D

I have a question if you're allowed to answer : will the full quad-core range be available on the new XPS 15, or more likely just the i7-3612qm ?

Also, it seems the new Inspiron SE are aimed at replacing the current XPS. Well at least some people at Dell.fr said so. That doesn't sound completely illogical because when I think about it, it seems clear that the current XPS line was targetted more as an (upper) mid-end product and in that respect a different approach from the previous XPS strategy.

Therefore, is it far-fetched to assume that Dell has decided to switch back to an outright high-end positioning for their XPS line/brand ?

I have a question. Maybe I'm dense, but none of those new Envy's, Sonys or Asus Primes have the as yet unreleased IVB "U" CPU's, right? If I have that right, then I'm asking PR to let me talk about our oranges in comparison to their grapes (refuse to use "apples" here). I can't make that case.
    EDIT:

Strike that. I'm confusing myself toggling back and forth between windows. Can't get into why, but I made a mistake. Give me some time to update.

It's a nice keyboard with a decent amount of travel. It's very similar in feel and look to the one on the XPS 13, but it's naturally got more spacing due to the bigger X and Y axes.

Not a "full range," but I bet we have the one you want us to offer. ;)

I'd say that's a fair assessment of what space the SE will occupy, at least when it comes to the 17". As far as the 15 and 14 (APJ only for the 14, and I don't get that) go, I'd say they are more like less costly alternatives to the XPS's, albeit with slightly lower level components.

    Hi everyone and Bill,

I have been lurking for a long time. Though I had to comment after seeing Bill's last response as it has me worried. I really do appreciate all the direct interaction and information you have provided Bill. Thanks. You mention the grapes (competition) as not using the IVB Mobile Ultra (U, previously ULV) processors, implying the new XPS 15 will. Currently there are no quad core I7 U processors, they are all dual core such as the 3517 and 3667. Please tell me the new XPS will have a quad core CPU option? Tell me I'm wrong...

Nice find, good sir. That is definitely a new XPS, likely a 14. The side grilles where the speakers would be look more narrow than what the 15 photo had. It's not the existing 15, 15z, 13 or anything else in their line-up, and it looks almost identical to the Tweakers leak. Not sure why the reviewer said he liked the look of the Inspirons more because they were less expensive. Strange. Can't really see an optical drive, unless it's omitted, between those two black points on the right side or they moved it to the left. Very nice looking, though, and very minimalistic. Track pad looks huge.

Does this mean someone will be reporting on these sooner than a few weeks from now? How odd is it for a reviewer to have access to one, show it off on video, and still be under an NDA?

Yeah,it is xps 14 as keyboard to size ratio is nearly like 14inchs,also there is no ODD which matches with the amazon leak! But it looks really great!

Depending on how long you can wait, I'd say there are a lot of reasons to cancel. Don't want to competitor bash, but I'll say our product will be very nice, and we'll respond to any issues customers find very, impressively, quickly, just like we did with XPS 13. We escalated and resolved so many issues in the first 30 days after the XPS 13 launch, I literally did not have time between reporting the issue and receiving the fix to track the arc of the conversations about the issues in social media. I just stopped trying to get reporting on the sentiment and volume, and just flipped the switch to reporting the issues and posting the fix. I was blown away by Engineering Quality response time. I've been at Dell for over 9 years, and I never, ever saw a non-enterprise product get such quick responses from Quality.

"Fan spins on high too often, and it's crazy loud." 2 days later: "Here's the BIOS in dev to correct that issue. Please have some customers try it out and let us know what they say." 4 days later: new BIOS with customer tweaks incorporated posted. Amazing.

Can't say anything more than I have about a dozen or two pages back. We've heard the feedback requesting better screens, and we've kept that in mind as we planned the product. Hopefully I can post some numbers after we get the go-ahead from PR.

I think you're right. Hard to tell what the display is, but it doesn't appear to be 1366x768, which is really starting to nauseate me as a resolution. Perhaps 1600x900, but what do I know? I'm actually kind of surprised they would have a 14, with a 13 already out and a 15 on the way. I didn't think the market was that hungry for one-inch increments.

I don't see many ports on the right side. Looks like maybe a mini display port and headphone jack.

The HDMI out is clearly on the left side because it's linked up to the XPS One in the background. Doesn't appear there could be any ports on the back with the way the screen dips. I'll bet it's hub central on the left.

UPDATE/EDIT: Actually, after reading another story about the Dell Inspiron line, they have included this...

It's possible for aesthetics that they have done this on the new XPS line as well.

You might be right, but I thought that was the power cord. It looks like the same placement as the xps 13.
