I can confirm as I am typing this on a brand new HP Envy 15-3200 that the red/orange screen issue is a NON-ISSUE. I and everyone else that has gotten the new 3200 model does not see any orange reds. Must be the new LG Panel. Reds are certainly red. I was really hoping to see some official specs on the Dell, I can't understand why they are keeping so tight lipped, it seems foolhardy. Theres a 21 day return policy, no restocking fee, no questions asked, on the HP Envy. If Dell blows me out of the water with the L521x I may exercise that return policy but otherwise this HP is great.

    Nope, PM's still off.

Any details on the GPU? What about a mSATA SSD and a HDD? Did you get a look at the bottom? What material is it--carbon fiber? And lastly, did you notice what kind of screws are on the bottom? (Hopefully not Torx 5 like the XPS 13)

    I agree

Same here, I've pretty much decided on the Asus Zenbook Prime 11 or 13 inch, 1080p matte IPS display with a contrast ratio of 939:1, even better than the retina display in that respect and overall a great screen with excellent coulour accuracy, brightness and viewing angles:

AnandTech - MacBook Pro Retina Display Analysis

    asus-zenbook-prime-ux21a-review

If the new XPS 15 can match this it will change my mind! But it's simple for me, I'm not going to spend money on a device with a lesser screen than my L502x with B+RGLED screen!

If everything else checks out on my envy (when i get it....) I will more than likely stay with it unless dell releases it within 21 days and its something extraordinary :p

    Dilemma:
The Inspirion 15R Special Edition has just dropped to $1099 AUD ($200 off) on the Australian Dell website.

I'm still waiting on the New XPS but that probably wont be out till end of June?

This offer for the 15R SE ends on the 21st of June.

So now do I risk it and wait for the XPS or buy the 15R SE now (as its not a bad deal?)

I'm prepared to spend up to $1600 but at the same time I wont spend $1299 for the 15R SE if I could have spent $1099 on it now.

If I wait and the XPS does not come out before June 30th (my deadline for new purchase) I will be stuck with a more expensive 15R SE... which I wont buy.

If I do buy the 15R SE now and the XPS comes out at a similar price or more exp but a lot better I'll be quite annoyed too!.

Dell_bill, can you give ANY kind of info on the release date for the new XPS? I want to buy Dell but as you can see Dell is not making it easy... we have to gamble.

Exactly... this whole process has been a big joke... their guarding the release date and specs of the XPS like its some kind of top secret project... some customers cant wait infinitely and I'm sure people like yourself are moving to competitors.

People hate not knowing and waiting .... hoping for the best.

Thanks... June 22 is just after the 15R SE goes back up to $1299... so annoying.

Looking at the specs of the 15R SE... and knowing some of the rumours about the XPS... how much better could the XPS possibly be?

Anyone know what features (apart from design) it could have over the 15R SE?

    1) Better GPU as it will be Nvidia 540 most likely (vs the AMD 7730 in the 15R SE)

    anything else?

With that deal someone posted earlier (899 base price w/ extra $200 off) I imagine a lot of people are going to jump on board.

I still wonder about the strategy with regard to information release on the 15. Maybe someone expected either less exciting announcements and attractive pricing from competitors, or that information would be tight and hype could be drummed up more effectively. Either way, the 15 looks like it's going to be fantastic, but much of the IB refresh in general across competitors is looking exciting and it's already here. I'm not really used to seeing so many great options.

It would be an option, I'd have to read Dell Australia's return policy.

A quick look at it shows a 15% return fee + shipping and handling.

There is also some talk about special prices and how that affects what you get back... so in essence I'd probably be up for around $200++ AUD... which would make the whole exercise rather expensive considering the XPS wont be 2x better than the 15R SE (I'm guessing).

    I'd appreciate e 650M, but definitely not the 1GB one! ;)
I think they know their customers very well: most of them buy a +2000 laptop just to browse internet, use some office and maybe little photoshop, so many of them never face an overheating problem. I'd love to see if they had some game to run, which is so rare in mac ;)

Read the return policy closely because the 15% restocking fee may only apply if the box has been opened. In that perspective what you can do is but the SE and keep it boxed until the XPS is officially announced and then you can decide whether to unbox the SE and keep it or if you would rather go XPS.

Is there any infor that you can bring us that proves you have actually seen/tested the product, like something we don't already know yet? For instance where the speakers are hidden (although I think I have uncovered that point a few pages back) or exactly on which date the NDA will be lifted (odd that you say it's in a couple of days if the product is to be announced by Dell on the 29th...) or something like the Windows scores or Furmark or something that proves you have used this machine.

...An Inspiron 14R special edition? Has there been information about this before? I thought it was just 15R SE and 17R SE? It looks extremely promising if it's coming to the states.

New! Inspiron 14R Special Edition Laptop Details | Dell Vietnam comes from dell itself. Not sure which country that is, vietnam?

    Quick overview:
    1600x900 screen upgrade
    GT640M (DDR3 2GB)
    No idea on the processor
    1.1"-1.24" thin
Aluminum like rest of Inspiron SE

Why have we never seen this before? Bill?

Edit: Everything I find is related to Asian countries. Is this something we'll never see stateside Bill? I would snap up this or the Vostro 3460 instantly.

Double edit: It says vietnam in the name :p

Triple edit: Dell US says Inspiron SE is 14 15 and 17, am I just dumb for somehow completely missing it between the 15R and 17R? http://content.dell.com/us/en/corp/d/corp-comm/image-gallery-inspiron-laptops

    ok...who wants some chinese translation?

it's what the powerpoint said (I guess it's the xps 15):
    -3rd gen quad core processor
    -1920*1080 FHD high resolution screen
    -GT640M 2G DDR5
    -8G memory
    -max 1.2TB hard drive (1tb hhd + 256gb ssd)
    -optical drive(blue ray as optional)
    -8 hours battery
    -65Whr battery
    -light and thin design (2.66Kg/23.2mm)
    -silver aluminum case
    -heat-insulated base
    -big touchpad...
    -skin-friendly-material palm rest...

difference between xps 15 and xps 14:

-15 has an optical drive while 14 doesn't.
-15 has one more headphone jack.

Heat insulated base?! I can't wait to see the details on the design. Also, dual hard drive would put this over the top in my mind, though if it's mSATA that would mean no RAID, right? Not a big con in my mind, the main point is it allows us to combine the speed of SSD and the capacity of HDD :). Thanks for the translation!

Oh, ok, sorry. I really hope that the 14" will also have the 640m but a U i7 CPU and a sub 1080P display. This would be PERFECT! :) Screenshot shows at least i7 3612 which is also very good. The only non 45W i7 CPU (has 35W).
350 nits for the display sounds quite nice too! I hope for some more leaks from this presentation.

Almost these info are known from 9 mar 2012:
Dell XPS L521X - Preliminary info - Dell News and more

The only news is heat-insulated base and isn't good news, because heat must go out in some way and if this way is not easy it remains inside and you have a throttling laptop.

Display for XPS14 is 1600X900 with 400nits and 500:1 contrast, but with a minor angle view respect XPS15.
    No 640m for XPS14.

New MBP gets 55-60° hot on the base. So this is also not the best solution. That's why I still vote for a ULV 15" notebook using 640m GPU ;-) If 14" XPS features these components (and lower resolution) it will be definitely cooler and my choice.
Update... NOOOOO! Is there any hope for a new XPS 15Z using i7U CPU and 640m GPU (+ no optical drive)?

Info about screens are leaked from Dell site, (now is deleted) and are already posted in this thread, if you go back maybe there is some screen shot.

I know the screen shot. It gave the contrast, res and brightness but didn't say anything about viewing angles I don't think? And that leak on amazon didn't mention the gpu? It just said cpu. It said they'd be nVidia Geoforce but we don't know which models. Unlesss I'm mistaken...

The leak on adorama camera didn't have any GPU listed.

Also, the dell site said wide or regular (not sure of the exact wording) viewing angles.

Maybe there isn't a dGPU, XPS14 looks much thinner then XPS15:

The info about display have been supplied from this Dell web page:
Help Me Choose: Display | Dell
How you can see there is a line for Viewing Angle, and for XPS15 they said Wide, while for XPS14 said standard

Or 1.5TB 5400. Who cares about rpm if it's data storage, it'll be quieter and draw less power at 5400. Use the msata for the speedy stuff.
