Interesting how opinions change... a few days ago almost everyone here couldn't wait for every bit of info about the product, now everyone seems to be "jumping ship" because of the "weak" gpu/sound/screen e.t.c even though they've yet to actually see/feel the product or even read any reviews whatsoever. Humans never disappoint

i for one dont buy dell product, but this would be the first dell product i would buy
-
Just from what I have read on this forum, and all the comparisons I have made to with the HP Envy, Y580, and GE60, I am going to be purchasing the XPS 15. Only thing that will hold me back is if the XPS 15 is not available for Student Discount Offer. I have used Dell laptops for work and they have proven very reliable.
-
F...... Two reps told me today it isn't going to be Tuesday for the launch day.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Francis E- We are not notified yet
sam- if, there were to be such a laptop, existent or not, would it be released on tuesday
Francis E- We have no reports yet from our production/marketing department if new models will be released this coming Tuesday
sam- if youre notified 2-3 days before hand and you havent been notified yet then it doesnt look like itll be tuesday
Francis E- That's right
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and another rep flat out told me "it won't be released Tuesday" -
I'm for sure sticking with it. Unless they price a 14" laptop above $1,100 because then that'd just be absurd.
-
When I take my laptop with me on the go? Isn't that the point of a laptop? To be able to use it anywhere anytime? I like to work outside a lot... and some of my classrooms don't have shades...
-
lol i haven't decided yet the y580 had a hard drive issue where the drive is 63+ degrees as its sandwiched between the CUP & GPU and some keyboard flex but i guess that person had a bad system.....
the dell does not have a number pad , i dont like the look of the keybed / the wasted space on both sides and the GPU is weaker
but im not a heavy gamer so gpu is not a determining factor
both got 1080p screens +1
dell is sexier and slimmer +1
dell build quality exceptional better materials alone says that +1
dell has warranty down here and have came to fix my desktop at home (Caribbean person here ) +1
dell will have the better screen dont need to read a review to know that +1
dell no number pad -1
dell may or may not have good sound +-1 (after reviews will change)
dell lighter +1
dell university discount +1
Lenovo sounds good +1
Lenovo good build quality +1
Lenovo accutype keyboard is black-lite and superior to dell's +1
number pad+1
Thick / bulky -1
hard drive heat issue -1
Lenovo 6.06lbs heavier but not by much -1
Lenovo might lose the company that do repairs for Lenovo n Trinidad -1
battery life is main priority then screen then sound then numberpad
and i think Dell might top Lenovo in battery even though Lenovo has a 72wh 6700MaH battery option
both are good systems im just nitt picking im not gonna buy a system till august / September so i have time to read reviews and compare prices so im still on the band wagon those who cant wait let them go -

You're forgetting one more + in Dell's column... and it's Bill. Last time I checked, Lenovo reps don't hang around that forum (or maybe they do, but I've never seen it). Bill is a class act doing a wonderful service to the consumers of his company. And once this product drops, he'll help you make the best, most informed decision. -
Well this is a good sign then... looking forward to seeing your reviews.

I don't think the Asus N56VZ is comparable to this laptop, at least with regards to form factor. It's extremely disingenuous how a lot of websites, including Asus' own, present the N56VZ as this sleek, slim laptop in all of the gallery shots. Once one gets a look at from the side you can only recoil with some mix of shock, disgust and disappointment. It's kind of like when you think you see a really hot chick from afar, only upon closer inspection you realize she's just a 6 with messed up teeth.
I'm very interested to see how this thing is priced and whether there will be discounts available. -
I think the specs for Dell's supposed "top of the line" XPS are just very underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, I may take a graphics hit to have a sexier, lighter laptop, since I already have a gaming rig at home. But the XPS line has apparently changed a lot since I bought mine 4 years ago & they were tops.
Personal preference I guess. I like the outstanding colors and depth of a glossy screen. I have a matte screen on my desktop build (only because I was forced - hardly any glossy monitors unless you pay $999 for Apple cinema display) and I don't think the picture is that great. Besides, I don't find myself playing Diablo 3 in my front yard or touching my screen too often. If I'm on the patio or whatever I'll use my Galaxy SII with OLED that's easy to see in the sun. -
Lol that's what I said. I don't plan on using my computer outside for any more than web browsing or shootin an email out and id probably be on my iPad or iPhone if I was just chillin outside..

I found some pictures. I'm not sure if anyone else has seen them, but they're new to me. They show the stickers on the silicone wrist pads and size comparisons of the entire line up:
-
Well, graphics performance is a numbers game. Reviews aren't magic; they typically won't bring any surprises. When they do, it's ordinarily that something is slower than expected, given the hardware.
In the case of the 14, the GPU is a surprisingly weak choice given chassis size and weight, and given the competition. So, one would expect some people to change their minds upon hearing the news, if graphics performance is a dealbreaker. -
It's 1.2-1.3 inches tall. That's not THAT hideous.
-
I actually think the Asus N56 is pretty nice, but the matte screen and all those tiny holes for the speakers that will gather dust/dirt/skin are rather disappointing.
I think it's still down to Envy 15 or XPS 15. To be honest I'd prefer to buy a Zenbook Prime for portability but I don't think it will fare so well with Guild Wars 2 -
The XPS 15 won't fare super-well with Guild Wars 2, though you can't take BWE experience to heart with this as the game barely touches the GPU, it's lacking a lot of optimization, you can probably get away at medium 1080 unless you're in a massive wvw attack.
-
i love my envy. only regret is that it could be lighter but since i was deciding b/w envy and xps, and the xps weighs the same, i went envy
-
Well here in malaysia, the asus n56 was going to be my choice until asus tried some stupid stunt by releasing the inferior version with pathetic specs (i7-3610qm, 1366x768, gt630 2gb ddr3, 4gb ram, 750gb hdd) and charging premium price ($1,126.83), that just flat out turned me off and i'm guessing a lot others as well cause shortly after they dropped the price for that model and released the "premium" model at the premium price. I saw it and honestly it didn't look as good in real life as it did in pictures. The y480 and inspiron 15R SE are just bulky for me, sony malaysia for some reason only God knows, decided not to release the vaio s15 and vizio decided to only release theirs in the US.... meaning i'm left with the xps15 vs. envy 15. Points to envy 15 with 7750m but that "red/orange" color display issue negates that for me, but worst of all i can't stand that black/aluminium-silver color combo.. WTH were they high on when they decided to go with that color scheme? Go all black or go all aluminium/silver!! So i guess i'll wait for the xps15 to see how that goes, fingers crossed and hoping dell malaysia won't decide to not release the xps15 here.
-
lol i persoanlly like the combo and the red/orange issue is fixed
-
There's an insane $450 off coupon on HP's site for the rest of the 24th. If I didn't already have a laptop I SO would have bought an Envy 15. What an steal. There's $400 off until the 30th, too. God, I wish I hadn't bought a laptop in April. Huge mistake.
-
lol the first week and half it was 33% off, in total i got off 600$
-
Talking about power consumption, I guess that games use mostly gpu and much less cpu; encoding and numerical computation use mostly cpu and no gpu. Can you tell me a realistic example of a software which could possibly use both cpu and gpu at full power? I guess it would be the only way to outbreak 90W
-
A game that does video encoding and numerical computations?!
Just kidding man.. no idea. -
All specs look quite nice to me right now but I defintely will wait for reviews of
XPS L521X (new XPS 15)
Gigabyte U2442V
Acer Aspire TimelineU M5-581TG-73514G25Mas
I still do hope that Dell, Samsung or Lenovo will bring a similar "Ultrabook". I would say these specs are the best of two worlds and I fear that Acer (most likely) and Gigabyte will not meet my expectations in terms of quality. If not....I will go for the new XPS 15.
The dual fan cooling system of the Gigabyte looks good to me but sadly no full metal construction:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/typo3temp/pics/47660006f3.jpg
I still don't get why it looks as Dell does not feature such specs for the XPS 14. -
WHEN WILL THOSE WILL BE LAUNCHED ????
-
And what are you a cyborg?
-
" I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate" , and also a L521X review!
-
where did you get a review?
-
Lol it was a joke, I quoted Blade Runner because gaidin43 named cyborgs, and adapted the quote to our case!
-
YOU are outdated! You successor will be released soon :-D
Nexus 7 tablet will arrive at end of June, says anonymous ASUS source -- Engadget
Edit:
Damn...too late to confuse everybody!
-
If the new XPS range had individual touch-pad buttons it would be a must buy for me, as it is I am not sure if I will buy it. I use my current Studio XPS on my lap (no external mouse option) and the thought of not having buttons annoys me.
-
Who knows... the practice of not having buttons might annoy you less than the thought. I'm in the same boat somewhat, but I've found that using a new touchpad always requires some adjustment (regardless of the similarity or difference), and I usually adapt quicker than I expect. Even so, different strokes for different folks, I suppose.
-
I agree that some people might find it a refreshing change but my worry is the fact that I often find myself holding right button whilst moving the mouse and clicking left button to select. That process sounds almost impossible (or at least very awkward) without individual buttons.
Has anyone tried gaming on a touchpad similar to the one on the proposed XPS? -
Gaming on a touchpad?? No
-
DAMN Those are some sexay pictures.
Too bad I dislike product sticker logos. Wonder if I can remove the stickers on the palm rest without leaving any residue. Probably not, I suck at removing stuff.
Gaming on a touchpad with CM9?? Hell yes! Angry birds and fruit ninja
-
The Muffin Man Notebook Consultant
There are lots of ways to remove the stickers:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/645759-xps-15-sticker-adhesive-googone.html
Problem is, the XPS line doesn't have a hard plastic or aluminum shell on the palm rests. It's silicone-based, almost gummy to the touch. My concern is that you could actually damage and scratch the material in trying to remove the stickers... which will be the #1 thing I do when I get the XPS.
Why do companies feel the need to advertise their product to the very people who just bought it? Put it beneath the metal plate on the underside of the device. Leave the logos off! -
Humm, yeah i suppose thats also gaming...
@ Bill, any release planned for tomorrow?
Oh and thanks to your polish colleagues for letting me find the info on Dell website
-
Funny that the polish website still has the L521X active! They didn't put it down yet.
-
still using cm7, PSK wireless is still un usable on the cm9 setup of touchpad
-
My touchpad is a $150 clock running some old cm9 build, it just sits in its touchstone all day errday. I'm sadfacing at those stickers on the palm rest, and you don't game on a trackpad, ever.
-
I noticed that product launches occured at 7:30 AM EST, so, in theory, the launch should be in about 23 hours from now! Let's hope I'm right!
-
You do realise how powerful a gt640m is compared to your 8600m gt. gt 640m has a lot of raw power and if it has a special gddr5 version then who knows it could easily reach 9000 in 3dmarkvantage and 2000 in 3dmark11 and 11000 in 3dmark06. Its more powerful then a 9800m gtx by a long way and has dx11.
I just hope dell outlet have crazy deals on these again with a 1080p screen.
Looks like an ok machine. -
All you need is some lighter fuel. Soak it in it, leave it for a about 15 seconds and it will peal off easy.
-
Been following this discussion for hundreds of pages and I have a few remarks.
Many have claimed that this isn't really a "gaming machine". That it's rather a media laptop for, let's call it "average gaming"?!?
OK, so, I'm not even that and I think many potential buyers are like me. All I do gaming wise is simple online games occasionally. So, why would I want this machine?
Because it offers what most laptops don't yet.
Here's what I want in a laptop, esp one that's more expensive than the average out there.
1) The best screen possible! This is very important to me.
2) As little as possible heating issues.
3) Reliability in general (includes good warranty).
4) Good sound.
5) Great design.
So, Dell would be smart to offer such a configuration for people like me, who can't or aren't willing to pay 1500-2500$ on a nice Apple box or want a powerful GPU, at a reasonable price because the price quoted in the Amazon link is way too high.
Anyway, this laptop is DROPDEADGORGEOUS! Design-wise, I'm sure they will win awards for it. Way better looking than the Macbooks imo.
I just hope they end up with a reasonable price. -
When was this fixed?!?!!
-
When was what fixed?
-
Whoa, let's not get carried away now...
-
I'm not. I think it's way better looking than the Macbooks. Of course, beauty is subjective and all that but to me, there's no contest.
