How well will the new xps 15 do with adobe premiere pro cs6 video editing with the leaked specs. Or would the AW be the better option?

if the top is in fact a rubber base compound you do not want to use a lighter fuel as it will soak in to the rubber and leave a stain.

Yea, I'd suggest against using any kind of petroleum product on a rubber base like that.

No. You don't game with touchpads.

Incidentally, I find the stickers on top strange. The XPS13 doesn't have any stickers, they're all located under that XPS panel on the bottom. Weird that they wouldn't do that for the 14 and 15.

Yup. I think it's one of the best designs I ever saw in this laptop category (slim, powerful 14-15" laptops) :)

Yeah it's subjective, but it's kind of like comparing a C6 corvette to a Lamborghini Gallardo. But hey, if the C6 works for you, then by all means... :)

it's more like comparing the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 and the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Fbg par Hermés. You get exactly the same hardware, but you end up paying 1M$ extra for a few design touches and the name on the chassis

I'd actually equate it more to buying a Honda and Acura or Nissan and Infiniti. Same internals.... different shell. Which one you think is nicer looking is up to you.

Very busy day today at the office. I have zero time right now to catch up. If I can shake free later today, I'll respond to comments starting here (<-personal bookmark).

In the meantime, watch the Direct2Dell blog in 14 hrs and 40 mins from now for news of note.

YouTube link for the G+ hangout simulcast. The hangout seats will fill up fast. I'll drop the direct link to the hangout on the G+ page in after I get my seat. lol

Funny how it expires just as the XPS is released. They're obviously worried they'll lose sales over it, so they have tried to get in first with the big discount to entice people to buy the Envy. If the Envy was better or even the equal of the XPS they'd have nothing to fear, surely? Frankly I'd rather pay the extra for the Dell.

My previous company was exclusively Dell (1000+ computers). My current company is exclusively HP (900+ computers). Dell wins hands down on reliability & support. Design is largely subjective but if I'm spending my own money then it's Dell all the way.

Eh...my analogy was much better. You don't get the same hardware. The processor is worse, the GPU is worse and the build quality/materials are surely worse. In spite of all of this, however, the performance is still pretty close (at least, to the bottom-end MBP) and it's much cheaper of course. Very similar to the C6 / Gallardo comparison I put forth. Hey, you don't have to sell me, I'll be getting the C6 :). You can't beat the overall value. But I'm not delusional either--the MBP is the pinnacle of notebook engineering, both in form and function. Too bad it costs so damn much.

I work in a small professional office that was exclusively a Dell shop for a long time. We used mostly Latitudes for the professionals, Vostros for the staff and an occasional Precision for heavy work with aerial image creation and editing.

A couple of years ago, the company changed the policy and permitted the purchase of HP Elitebooks and Lenovo Thinkpads (I have the only consumer notebook in the firm, but that's a different story). All three are equally reliable, service is similar, but the Dells are much less expensive, when you take into account the added cost of a three year, on-site next day, or better, warranty. Because of that, we are still mostly a Dell shop with a couple of Elitebooks and a growing number of Thinkpads.

He's mostly right, if you consider both the form and the function. That is, I've yet to see a notebook wich is both that powerful and that beutiful (where the concept of beauty is limited to thinness and build/material quality, but still subjective). If you take them apart, there are more powerful and more (arguably) beautiful notebooks.
Anyway, I expected a similar response, given my tease with the bugatti metaphor... I was just poking fun at apple per se, more than in this specific scenario :)

Form, maybe, but function? Ridiculous. Too few USB ports on every model they make, and they're too close together to plug in large accessories, insane temperatures...it's pretty, but I don't think anyone can call it the best-engineered laptop when you consider everything. Not to mention that the Retina version, which is clearly the way the series is going, is 100% non-repairable and non-upgradeable. I think that makes it the worst laptop on the market, not the best.

    that's my point! (sort of)
it's got some serious design flaws, and you could certainly find a notebook that does something (or a more than a single thing) better than the mbp, but it's very difficult to find a notebook that it's better than it in every department.
That makes the mpb (probably) the pinnacle of notebook engineering. That's mostly due to lack of worthy opponents and depends on you definition of engineering quality

Most don't have issues with PSK and you definitely shouldn't have any issue with recent CM9 nightlies. They use an entirely different wifi driver and wpa supplicant.

I'm with you on this except I wish some PC manufacturer would copy their touchpad. Its seriously so much better than anything on PCs. I'm not talking about software issues with Windows either.

In Windows 8, I like the touchpad on my XPS 15 L502X as much as a Macbook. The problem is that you never know what kind of touchpad you'll get on a Windows laptop. My girlfriend's touchpad is horrible, while mine owns.

no, I'm saying that no other manufacturer to date has squeezed so much in a chassis so thin and sturdy, creating a laptop wich is still usable. As I said, it all comes down to your definition of "engineering prowess". Do you value power to size ratio? power to max temps? chassis durability? It's an incredibly complex and strongly subjective discussion, and I'm only holding this argument because it's fun (and very educative) to discuss in a language that is not my own ;)

I just got a Dell brochure in the mail that has pics and details about the new XPS. When I saw I immediately went to the Dell site but could not find details on it. It says "prices from 1299" for the 15.6.

Isn't it odd to see details in a brochure when it hasn't been officially revealed online?

Personally, I look for these things in this order:

    1. Build quality (reliability/durability)
    2. Build quality (fit and finish of the chassis)
    3. Hardware spec, decent keyboard and ergonomics
    4. Decent screen
    5. Looks and styling

However, looks and styling are incredibly important to me despite being bottom of my list - hence finding the perfect laptop for me is so difficult. The Samsung Series 9 is near as damn it there, except the horrible keyboard.

ThinkPads tick all the boxes but look like a slab from the 80s.

I think Dell has the balance just about right (Latitude/XPS). If the XPS 13 could be upgraded to 900p and 8GB RAM it would tick all the boxes too.

Really looking forward to the new XPS 14/15 - real MBP competitors in my eyes. I could never buy a Mac because I am a Windows .NET developer. Yeah I could install Windows on it but it would never run properly, would have driver and support issues and has a stupid command key instead of Windows key. Oh and Fn and CTRL are in the wrong place ;-)

It's on us to ship stuff out on a correct schedule. If you have materials sent from us (or anyone), feel free to post whatever you like without fear of any reaction from Dell. Our problem would be with anyone who sends information out off schedule, not you.

Oh please, it was me who drew the extended comparisons most recently, not him, so if you're going to blame anyone, blame me. Besides, there have been numerous other references to the MBP in this thread, so to single out one person is ridiculous. It's only natural to compare the two, especially if the high end XPS is priced close to the bottom spec MBP. I do agree to some extent that you must be careful not to let the conversation devolve into a generic Mac vs PC debate devoid of real content, but specific spec by spec comparisons aren't a bad thing.
