Did you notice how incorrect the other websites have been? Just because the page is up does NOT mean it is correct, best to just wait for the US pages to go up tomorrow and we'll know full proper specs.

All of this seems mighty strange. I really hoped for a better price point than this. Even if it's significantly higher than the US, its most likely going to be the same price in Europe - since our VAT is higher in general.

If I had $2700 to spend on a new laptop, I'd already gone for the macbook retina.

    Awesome.

If the US spec versions are similar, I can get away with the cheapest I7 and drop in 16gb of ram myself.

I'm kind of okay with the less customization route dell has taken. I know when looking at l502x's i put a lot of time into poking around the customizer trying to find the best deal for the features i wanted, but it would always be wonky. The preset spec levels would always be missing one or two things i wanted, or had one or two things i didn't want.
And trying to correct them would end up with retarded prices and the lower specs plus a feature or two would be more expensive than the top spec that included everything.

Also, I highly doubt dell would publish the wrong specs on a live page where you can actually buy the laptops. The specs might be slightly different in the US, but i think this is close.

Man, the Vizio notebook looks really attractive compared to the XPS15 at those prices :S For 300$ less, you get similar specs along with a better graphics card, because starting XPS15 comes with a GT630M... hopefully it retails for a bit lower than that in the US :(

Its also the basis for many games casual players play, L4D2, DoD, CSS, Portal 2, etc. I would expect to be able to play those games on a laptop. I don't expect to be able to play games that I need desktop horsepower to play.

I noticed that on the AUS website they have the 13" XPS Ultrabook base model for $1,299 and it's $999 in the US so if thats a correct pattern, they add on $299 so maybe the 14" will be starting at $999 or a little over 1k

HL2 is old enough that you could probably play it on an ultrabook without a discrete GPU. They should at least be testing L4D2 or Portal 2, since those are the most recent Source games.

All those games should be playable on ANY laptop with a discrete GPU. Portal 2 runs at like 100 fps on my XPS 15. It is, at best, a poor choice for a benchmark of the fastest laptop Apple makes.

At what resolution do you play it on your xps 15?

Its still listed in a lot of benchmarks because people care. You may not care, but many other people care.

The XPS13 is $1299 AUD, and 11499 SEK (Swedish Krona)

That would put the top of the line XPS at almost 24k SEK - almost $100 MORE than the better specced, lighter, thinner MBP Retina.

Everyone needs to take a deep breath and calm down a bit, haha. This is not the US site and we all know Australia gets shafted with electronic prices and I guarantee the customization will be better on the US site also.

Australian prices for laptops and computers are typically 30% more expensive. If this is the case, the lowest XPS 14 will be $999.99

US dollar is converted 1:1 with AUS dollar. Usually is the same conversion for USA electronics stuff sold in Europe, even if EUR is not 1:1 to USA $ but euro is about 25% much stronger.
Said this, the price seems very high, comparing it with competitor. Anyway, we have to wait official euro prices.....

It doesn't really matter the conversion, Aussie's ALWAYS get shafted. US prices will probably be around $1299 for that 1999 model, I would not be surprised.

I'm eyeing the XPS 14, and I find it interesting that they have a 512 SSD option and the XPS 15 doesn't. I also thought the winds were blowing towards 1600MHz RAM. Seems like 333 is what comes loaded... at least on the Australian systems.

I read on another forum once you can remove some plastic off the m4 to fit a 7mm space. I have not verified this though, so don't take that as fact! I am very interested to find out how easy it is to swap into this laptop in addition to the rest of the tear down info!! So exited!!! This thing has to be SATA III right?

wat? The 15 has the 512 ssd option. It's the reallll expensive one on the right.

also, I'm really curious to know if there will be anywhere retail that I can check out one of these in person.

I went back and forth about buying a l502x for at least a month, before seeing a low spec'd one at microcenter, and then went home and ordered one immediately.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy a new 15, but being able to play with one for a few minutes in person would absolutely solidify that decision.

Honestly, I have waited for this ivy bridge/kepler upgrade for a year...now Dell, for the first time, is REALLY disappointing me.

They change the xps 15 to an "ultrabook model", they decided to put the middle-class ivy bridge's i7 processor 3612QM (which is more or less only a little bit performant than the previous 2720QM with same consumption) that they've never done before (the xps series has always had the best-in-class processors models, except the "extreme" ones).
Also, they removed the RGB display with a "common" WLED one.

This, also raising the price, at the same level, more or less, of the mac...but mostly important, they removed what made Dell what it is, the large customization choices.

Seriously, Dell, what are you doing?

PS: personal opinions, of course...i think so.

remember the XPS 14 is more of an ultrabook so it got ULV cpu and the 1333mhz ram to reduce power draw

So, having lost track of this thread over the last few days, quick question for the more involved followers:

What do we know of the speakers so far for the 15? All I can remember is that they were a Skull Candy 2.1 (not 100% on the sub-woofer though) system. Anything on wattage or anything like that?

Yup, good idea. Those specs compare with the $1999 AUS version. So that is like $400 difference

I can say one thing, if the UK prices are AUS $ for £1 then Dell can forget it lol.

Look at the New Zealand Prices lol

While performance of the i7-2720qm and i7-3612qm are roughly equal, the power consumption certainly is not. The i7-3612qm should be much more power friendly, even more so than the 10w TDP difference implies. Ivy Bridge in general was not about better performance, it is about better performance per watt.

Does dell offer a student discount similar to Apple (-$200)? I know they give corporate discounts. I'm curious to see if these will be available on the new models and how much they offset the price.

Calm down... Unless you're not in the US, there's going to still be customization options. Don't go off the Australian dell.com unless you live there because for them it takes longer to get the laptops, longer to order them, and are priced significantly higher. If you live in the US then you're in good luck with the customization offers. Not sure how it goes for EU or Canada though.
